The food was quick and fresh. I ordered a simple beef bulgogi bowl. The meat was very tender. Also tried the crab Rangoon which was good!

First time in 5 years, first since the renovation. Ambience is much more sophisticated and refined,…read moreyet still inviting. Best hush puppies I've had in my life. Menu is significantly pared down from previous model. Pricier, but the quality and presentation make it worth it. Half the mahi-mahi fish tacos and my daughter had black bean burger and fries. Both were vastly better than past years. Keggy was our server and I asked if they made shots, she said what were you thinking? I replied we were in Duck so I'd like a Duck fart, she said no, you're in Kitty Hawk, so I ordered the Kitty Hawk Rooster, and she explained to me where the name originated. Friendly staff, personable service. Only complaint, the AC upstairs was blowing right on us, so it was a little chilly. Would recommend to anyone. $60 for appetizer, two handheld meals and one cocktail. Two thumbs up!!!

This was my first time here and will be my last. I arrived at 4:30 today (Thursday). A woman opened…read morethe door and said they were closed for cleaning and they would open at 5. So I waited a half hour for them to open. I asked for a booth where I could have room to work and eat and the hostess walked me over to a 4 top, which would've been perfect. The 2 tops are tiny. She said she would have to ask if could sit there, which was odd because it just opened and not many people were there. She talked to the gentleman at the bar-- who I assume was in charge. Based on the words exchanged, it seemed problematic from his perspective for me to sit there, despite the mostly empty restaurant. Since I'm a lawyer, I work where I dine much of the time and never experienced such a problem trying to get seated. The hostess asked me if upstairs was okay and suggested it would be quieter. Assuming she was taking me to a 4 top upstairs, I went up with her only to find there were a bunch of 2-tops. At that point, it felt as if I was not heard or cared about--as if I were unwelcome--despite being pleasant with the staff from the moment I walked in. So I was about to go back down the stairs and said it's okay I'll just go somewhere else. Then a woman on the staff overheard me and it was suggested I could sit at the bar. I explained that's not a good space because the bar area can become loud. And this is especially so when people become intoxicated. So basically my options were a little two-top or the bar. I ended up leaving. I worked very hard in the restaurant industry before I enlisted in the Coast Guard and eventually became an attorney, which is why I always make it a point to be polite to service staff. And I would've never treated people the way I was treated here. I could understand them not wanting me to take up the space of a 4 top if it were a Friday, a weekend, or later in the day, but this is Thursday right at opening time at 5pm when the restaurant isn't even busy. I wouldn't recommend this restaurant.

It has always been good, and we definitely won't let this deter us from returning. Ms T had her usual Shrimp basket lunch. The issue was that the shrimp were not cooked through. They were still translucent. We totally understand not wanting to overcook shrimp, but these were not quite done. On the bright side she commented on how good the slaw was. I have been on a kick to try barbecue at restaurants that are not barbecue joints per se, to see if I can find some hidden gems. For example, both Sam & Omie's and Wanchese Marina serve a good barbecue sandwich. Black Pelican, at least on this day, does not. I must say, the serving was huge. This was more than enough for two meals for me. The barbecue was dry and not well flavored. The texture and flavor was more like dried out beef that has been over-roasted. This is not something I would order again here. All that being said, I am leaving the rating for Black Pelican as it is because we have always had good meals here. I accept that it can't be 100% perfect every time and sooner or later we will run into something that is less than stellar. We will continue to return. I just know this not where I will have barbecue and we are sure the shrimp thing was just a one timer.

After checking into our hotel in Kitty Hawk, we headed to The Black Pelican for an early dinner…read morearound 4:00 PM, thanks to a ton of recommendations on an OBX Facebook group. We beat the crowds and got a table on the upstairs patio. It technically looks out over the ocean, though from our spot, it was mostly a view of the sand! We ordered their famous recommended dish and said it was amazing. My Salmon was great too! The only downside? The service really went downhill after the food arrived. Despite being the only ones on the patio, our waiter never checked back in. A couple of waitresses were just hanging out by the bar on their phones, too. Eventually, one of them noticed our cleared plates, asked about dessert, and just brought the bill. No "how was everything?" or "can I get you anything else?"--which was a bummer for such a highly recommended spot!
