I've been here twice now. Both times I've ordered a White Peach tea (once with boba and without) and this time it came out barely cool. The ice level was so low it didn't cool down the tea. I had to stick it in refrigerator to make it cold. Their selections are fairly diverse, but I'm not crazy about their boba. Boba is mediocre in taste. The girl at register was a little rude to my friend and I. Also- I get that they're called fat straws, but they should also have the common skinny straws too for people who don't get boba. I started coming here a few months ago and I haven't been able to survive without an Oreo mochi donut and chai milkshake with boba! It's such a unique and delicious treat to have every week or two, and the staff is extremely friendly. The main manager there gave me a coupon for a free donut or drink during my first visit which I thought was so nice! This place is nice with some classic decor. They seem to have different flavors than most boba places I know (which are mainly just infused tea and fruit smoothies). After much debating (because I don't know anything about teas) and lots of friendly help from the cashier, I got their passion fruit infused tea with mango jelly. For those who wonder - there is NO gelatin in their tapioca pearls. Didn't confirm for their jellies though. I've been coming here for atleast 4 years now. Recently I managed to get my whole family hooked. In comparison to other bubble places (the more ethnic Asian ones) this is a great place to introduce a beginner to Boba. The pearls are chewy, light, and fresh (and they put a reasonable amount in your drink too). The flavors provided are geared more toward the beginner/standard American smoothie fare like strawberry banana, pina colada (you won't find salted plum). They do have a plethora Vietnamese coffee, green/chai/thai teas, and a whole range of loose leaf teas for brew though. The menu does seem endless, as so many combinations are possible. Prices are on par with other Boba places. Its usually pretty packed every time I come. People come in waves. There's a few seats outside to complement the ones indoor. Most of the time people pick it up Togo. Service: It's pretty fast, but sloppy. Sometimes they put wayyyy too much ice. I didn't get a receipt this last time (and wasn't asked). They're trying to spit out drinks really quick so you have to hope you hear it the first time. Overall pretty happy that I don't need to have a sugary drink to come here. read more

Fat straws has amazing blended fruit drinks that are always super fresh! Mango is the best in my opinion. Prices are a little higher than most bubble tea places but I'm willing to pay it for the fresh fruit taste and not the powdery stuff. I don't really like the milk teas. The pearls themselves really depend on when you go. Sometimes they're perfectly chewy and other times they're completely soft. Always be sure so ask for a sample of their daily special! read more

Before I begin, if Fat Straws was in California, it would have a 2.5 star rating on Yelp and it wouldn't be in business for long. One thing I was scared about when moving to Dallas, let alone The Colony, was boba... I guess here in dallas they call it bubble tea? To me that's like... instead of calling it "sirloin" you just call it "cow back" or something. I basically just learned to hold myself together until I visited home again. I used to drink boba like a couple times a week in CA, and I was going through some serious boba withdrawal. My bf sensed this and took me here in hopes of satisfying my cravings. Unfortunately, he could tell I was upset as soon as I saw their menu -they don't have grass jelly, lychee jelly, pudding, or all the other options you get in CA. They also didn't have milk tea when I was there (but now I hear they do, so thats good :)), but it's more just like a smoothie place with some pretty bland tapioca balls. That being said, the tapioca balls at least weren't hard and they were a good consistency and my tea was drinkable and tasted good, so my craving was at least to some degree, met. I think that really, this place has outdone itself with their latest accomplishments. Firstly, they've added this "Wall of Tea" which you must resist as you walk by to get to the register to order. Every known flavour of froofy or sophisticated loose leaf tea is there and some more. Mate, rooibois and black tea are the usual suspects as the prime ingredients but they have some wild combos that could knock you out. Secondly, why why why did I never notice they have Thai Tea Slushies! I sometimes really loathe how much ice they put in, making me pace myself at how fast I drink my Thai Tea, waiting for ice to melt, to hold out just a liiiiittle longer on how much there is to drink left. I hated ending up with a tall cup of ice and bubbles. UGH. Instead, they have these slushies! No ice, just blended up thai tea in delicious smushy texture with boba (duh). First off it's BOBA not BUBBLES! Second, my drink was bland. I ordered a strawberry banana smoothie. I couldn't taste the strawberry, the ice cream and I could barely taste banana. It basically tasted like I was a super sweet flavorless frappe. The boba was hydrated nice and tasted good, the cup was sealed but was kind of sticky on the side. Ever since I moved in August, and my other-FS addicted cohort moved in July... we have become regulars of this Fat Straws location instead of the one down on Alpha. I have held off on reviewing Fat Straws long enough!! I have been a loyal customer for the past 3 years, and have not gone by a month without dropping by Fat Straws. I know - my future oncologist will probably cringe at this! But honestly, this is the BEST place to get your tapioca/boba fix. I have had numerous drinks from Asia, Houston, and DFW area, and THIS PLACE CANNOT BE BEAT!!!!!! They don't use powder (like typical chain boba restaurants do) in their drinks. Everything is freshly made from fruits or milk / tea. I tried out the original milk tea (which was still pretty good compare to other places), but my life changed when I ordered STRAWBERRY PINA COLADA SMOOTHIE (with bubbles on the side). OMG I can't stop spazzing out over this drink because it's that good! Do your taste buds a flavor and try it out!!!! They will thank you!!! The other good thing about Fat Straws is their BOBA!!! Their boba is distinctively different from your other tapioca shops. They are so chewy, and SWEET, and best of all, Fat Straws are NOT STINGY with the amount they give!!! I love it! The consistency of the drinks and boba is the same every week, so you don't have to worry about any off days!! - and I know this because yes, I have been guiltily dropping by every weekend! The only complaints I have is: - the shop is too small to fit all of their customers, especially on the weekends. I'm no bubble tea expert nor am I a fanatic. However, today, I was craving the sip, swallow, chew of bubble tea. I ordered the pumpkin pie smoothie (technically, not a tea latte?) but it was fantastic. A few of my pearls were a little hard but the flavor was amazing. They even made it with fat free milk for me. It was tasty, spicy and just like a pumpkin pie in a cup. I've had their regular tea lattes before and they have been out of the park. I love Fat Straws! I'm a regular after discovering their Vietnamese frappe... it tastes just like Vietnamese iced coffee in a frappe form. It doesn't make me feel so good after, so I should probably stop going so much... but it's just too good. Their other flavors are good as well! Fat Straws has a pretty wide variety of teas that they serve. I'm not a big tea guy but they have pretty decent boba tea (Chinese tea with the tapioca balls). I don't really get all the hype about Fat Straws. It just feels like an Americanized asian drink place that doesn't quite do asian drinks justice. The drinks are definitely passable, but they're not the greatest I've had. A curious coworker of mine was once drawn to the store called "Fat Straws" that was in our usual lunch shopping center, and he was kind enough to bring a smoothie back for me with dark little bubbles in the bottom. We both tried them, and my first impression was that this was a silly gimick to make a smoothie different. Then we went back again, and again, and realized that we were addicted to sipping and chewing. Thus my Fat Straws addiction began, and according to the amount of free drinks I've received (ask for a bonus card), I've had about 50 bubble teas since then (7 of them free!). There is something fun about drinking a delicious tea (the Mango Jasmine and Thai Tea are my favs) and having something chewy in the glass, too. It's hard to describe the appeal, and it doesn't win everyone over for sure, but if you enjoy it, you'll soon be addicted. And if you aren't down with the bubbles, you can order any of their drinks without them. I asked what the bubbles were made of, and they are simply larger tapioca bubbles. They are made from a potato-like plant that they shave pieces off of. Then they roll the pieces up into a ball and boil them. So they are basically just little carbs. This used to be their only location, but they have since opened a Dallas store that I haven't been to. The employees here are super friendly, and happy to make recommendations to first-timers. There are several tables to sit down and enjoy your bubble tea at. It's a great place to play chess, scrabble, or read a book. My three-yr-old loves this place - he gets the Strawberry milk, Banana milk, or Peach milk. They are like smoothies but not so thick, and he absolutely loves the bubbles. Some would say, "Choking hazard!" but liquid and food go down the same pipe, so I really don't see that happening. He holds his own, and this is a much healthier treat than Dairy Queen. read more

When I first inquired to her "what in the tarnation is bubble tea?" she proceeded to give me a web address for fat straws! Since I can't find any bubble tea in my area (I live in a place that only has 1 BLINKING stoplight), I said to my friend that I have to try some bubble tea when I stayed with her. So we went to Fat Straws. And boy do they have some fat straws! Anyway, I had no clue to how to order, so my friend said what I should get (1/2 and 1/2, sugar and bubbles). I opted for some brewed tea (I think a coconut cream one) and on my second trip there I tried the Moroccan Mint. I absolutely can say I am a fan of bubble tea!!! I really like the Mint drink, but when I go here again I will try something else (I think I will want the avocado and brown sugar one...hey, what did you expect from a guacamole fan!??!). this place had a very steady stream of folks and at times it was lined up outside the door. I was quite excited to find this place because after living in CA for my whole life where boba tea was found on every street corner, I was having withdrawals when I moved here. It was a bit of a drive for me but absolutely worth it. They had a pretty good selection of flavors and different smoothies to try. I had the jasmine tea with boba pearls and was so excited! There were quite a bit of teenagers so I figured this was probably THE hang out place for all of them. Well I mean, who WOULDN'T want to hang out at such a facility that has such amazingness in a cup?? Haha But the workers seemed friendly and got our orders out pretty fast. One of my favorite boba joints in the North Dallas area. It's always consistent with perfectly cooked boba. I have been frequenting this place for the past 9 years and I'm impressed how they've kept their flavors and prices consistent. I normally get their classic milk tea, which is really rich & can be a bit overpowering at times. The mango green tea with lychee jelly is great for lighter flavors & a good way to cool down from this brutal Texas heat! -- They have opened a second location by the Galleria but this original spot is more consistent with its flavors I think. They no longer have board games to enjoy and their picture board (with so many old memories ;p) have been removed, but I still love the efficiency and flavors of this little gem! read more

Being asian, you have a lot of chances to have Boba, and to find this place was a good experience. The place is located in a strip center next to Noodle's Ave, which I just reviewed. I typically stop by Fat Straws after I finish lunch next door. The menu selection is good, and I typically only get the Almond Slush without pearls. It's a great, fragrant flavor that I just can't get enough of. Service is good, and the place always stays clean. I always seem to forget my frequent visitor punch card. I've been here twice and here's my breakdown. I'm a huge Green Tea guy. If I don't get the original pearl milk tea or thai tea, then I'll go for some sort of green tea. 1. Green Tea Pearl Tea - I ordered this by mistake, I thought I ordered a slush, but literally got a green tea with pearls. This is no fault of theirs as I'm an idiot for not looking carefully at the menu. However, the green tea was delicious and was satisfied with my mistake haha 2. Green Tea Slush with Boba - Ah, this is what I wanted! The slush had a really rich green tea flavor which is vital to the ESSENCE OF GREEN TEA! I honestly believe that green tea requires to hit that threshold of flavor and then it becomes exponentially more enjoyable. And Fat Straw hit pass that threshold and I'm very happy with that. I have not tried the other drinks on the menu, so I can't give an extensive review on their whole list. Judging the boba, they were very good, but not the absolute best. Fat Straws is aight. I'd like to give a big 'Ya done good' to the person who opened it because even though I'd never get boba milk tea from there, she did a great job Americanizing an awesome Taiwanese drink and introducing the chewy black ball to the non-Asian populace. The boba itself is chewy and soft, made fresh every day and spooned into your drink in large portions. I like Taiwan Cafe's milk tea over on Independence and 15th street ('tis cheaper too) because it's less sweet and creamy and allows the tea aromatic to come out more. Haven't tried any smoothies yet, actually... Local high school students often come in to order drinks to-go because there aren't that many seats available for parties who just want to hang out in the store. ***To be honest, my favorite drink I've had from here is their green tea milkshake. That thing is a dessert drink, and should not be consumed in copious quantities. The green tea flavor comes through better than I expected, and the creamy milk accompanies it to a T. I got the Taro milk tea with boba and absolutely loved it! the boba was very soft and delicious not like some other boba places where it's hard and chewy. The taro milk tea was not too sweet either, which I loved!!! Some places make their milk teas so sweet I often have to ask for half our 30% sugar. This is probably my favorite boba place in the world. The staff are always friendly, and service is quick. Even when it's busy, the line moves quickly and drinks are made with little delay. When they are not busy, it takes them literally 43 seconds (I timed) to have your order ready (at least if you order a milk tea haha). I get the regular classic milk tea with boba ($3.50 plus tax) about 98% of the time and I have never been disappointed. The tapioca pearls are always chewy and they are made fresh daily. The tea is not too sweet. When it is busy, the line goes out the door, and the place can be loud so it may not be the best place to study. If you come at prime time you may not be able to get a table either so be ready to take your drinks elsewhere. I've never called in an order, but the lady in front of me in line today apparently ordered and payed ahead of time, so I know that's an option- I'm just not sure how she did it. read more

After my favorite place to go (Java and Cha) went under new management, I ventured here more and more often for drinks. It's a great place for tapioca with a very wide selection of drinks and combinations. M My favorites are the taro smoothie, thai tea, and milk tea. They also have great seasonal drinks if you want to be more adventurous. Only suggestion would be to expand the place - there is no where to sit! If you go with more than 3 friends, get it to go and chill somewhere else. read more

Great place to get boba and a chill environment. However, the place is tiny and might be hard to find seating at times (not an ideal place to go to with a humungo group). The drinks are a bit expensive compared to the ones in cali. So far.. I've had the lychee slush, chai and thai tea (all with boba or bubbles or boobs or whatever the heck you wanna call them.. i just stick with boba). The lychee slush and the thai tea were both good. The chai, on the other hand, was a mistake. Someone must've tripped with a jar of honey and accidentally poured it into my drink. Smoothies--they use yogurt, which makes for a tangy taste. The strawberry-banana smoothie could be improved (more sour than sweet). Avocado smoothie: to be avoided, unless you know you're a fan. Mine tasted like butter...ugh. Favorites: Classic Milk Tea (I ask for half ice to get more tea, and half bubbles to cut down on calorie guilt). Chai shake: really sweet, but has cinnamon-y flavor to it. Yum! Canteloupe slush: REALLY good! Not too sweet, tastes like the fruit! Perfectly cooked tapioca pearls (I think it's weird to call them "bubbles") is difficult to find at bubble tea joints, but Fat Straws has done it! And they've won over my passionfruit-loving heart with their passionfruit jasmine tea (and add some mango jelly). I also tried the blueberry cheesecake tea with pearls, but the passionfruit jasmine is by far the best. For their tea drinks, they add honey and a touch of milk: just the way I like it (i.e., not overly sweet). Their seasonal pumpkin pie smoothie tastes exactly as it's named, and they even throw in cinnamony pie crust. Mmm... The verdict: Remember, kids -- bubble tea is a sometimes treat. I recommend this place mainly because they brought the greatness that is mochi donuts to Dallas!!! I've been waiting for this to show up here. The mochi donuts are light and chewy. My favorite flavor is the cookies and cream, but mainly because I love cookies and cream anything...haha. Otherwise I would say strawberry is the next best flavor in my opinion. I love places where you can just grab a bubble tea, smoothie, or anything and have a moment to catch up with friends. The added plus is that fat straws is a quick five minute drive from my house - but that is neither here nor there. I would definitely recommend the green tea smoothie, for those who love green tea ice cream as much as me - it happens to be the primary (if not only) ingredient in this drink. It's cold, tasty, and I find myself craving it often. If you're a thai tea fan, Fat Straws does a great job at this drink as well. You also can't go wrong with a passionfruit smoothie, but it is a little on the sweet side. The only part of the store that gets a -1 star is the fact that you have to pay extra for the bubbles. It doesn't really make sense to me, mostly because it's ... well, fat straws. You need fat straws to drink bubble tea. So then you have to pay extra FOR the bubbles? Don't get it, but whatever. I still pay. The people working there are always friendly, and they often have a tea of the day that you can try out.
