Went in last Thursday and there was a man sitting behind the counter playing video games. Said he didn't have any food because the cook had car trouble. Went in again yesterday (a Tuesday) and the place was locked up tight. So obviously we can't recommend this place. Occasionally (actually more times than I want to admit) my husband needs his ice cream fix. I don't understand it, but who am I to judge. Anyhow, on the way back to Hampton Roads, we stopped by Fatty's (appropriate name or future prediction?) and got his fix. The withdrawals immediately stopped. Definitely worth a stop. Usually a good place as they have a unique ice cream that other places don't have. The Superman ice cream that is three colors also has three flavors! When we've found it elsewhere in Buxton and surrounding areas it has different colors, but is just plain vanilla flavoring. The reason for the one star is the smell. There was such a terrible, overpowering smell that we couldn't stand to eat our ice cream inside on our last visit. Beware. There could be an underlying problem explaining the stench. read more

Whenever we visit Hatteras, we always make a trip to Fatty's Two visits in a row, we have tried to go to Fatty's with no luck. The first visit, the Facebook page said they were open and when we arrived, they were not open. We sent a message through Facebook and never received a response. This summer we tried again. Their Facebook page listed their hours as breakfast 8:00-11:30 and lunch 11:30-3:00 and they are open every day. We arrived at 11:00 and they were closed. Call before you go. read more

Hands down the best meal (b-fast) I've had in the OBX was the Shrimp and Grits at Fatty's. It features shrimp, andouille sausage and grits in a creamy, creole tasting sauce that really left me craving more. I even used my wife's toast to sop up the remaining sauce. We started coming here last year during our fist trip to the OBX. It happened to be across the street from where we were staying. The hours on the marquee aren't accurate - flew by on a Wednesday at 4:15 because marquee said it closes at 3:00. But saw neon sign in window was lit so I turned around for my chocolate fix. They have the basic flavors and then some different ones too. I had chocolate that was swirled with caramel, although the caramel was light. We make a point to get ice cream at Fatty's every summer. Hershey's ice cream is always good. This summer, though, their hours have been irritatingly inconsistent, to the point that I've lowered my review to 3 star. We checked their posted hours before going to get ice cream the first night of our trip this year and it was advertised open till 10. We got there at 915 and the doors were locked. The nice kids behind the register still let us in since we could pay cash, and said the store closed at 9. That was annoying but we figured they just haven't changed their online ads. However we decided to go get breakfast today at the sister restaurant Fatty's Eats, supposedly open 7-3, and at 9am they were closed. We probably won't be attempting to give them business anymore. read more

Fatty's, like much of the outer banks, is a model for tasteful tourism. In addition to selling ice cream, Jeff, the proprietor, leads twice daily kayak tours of the surrounding area of the sound. You cruise through some islands and observe a good bit of water foul, oysters, etc. If you weren't aware, Hatteras island is the home of plenty of beautiful and amazing wild life. If you're not aware of this, let Jeff show you. The trip lasts ~2hrs and covers a good bit of distance in the sound behind the shop. After learning about the surrounding habitat the tour turns to the human history of the area. Jeff has deep routes in the area and can tell you plenty about the history of the island, his family history, and the area where those two topics meet. One of the best parts of the history story is that it is largely fact based. I have met many tour guides who will attest that making things up is a part of the trade. However, Jeff is undoubtedly a history buff and spoke with a healthy degree of specificity and factual authority that is often lacking on the other tours I have been on. Friendly to tourists, friendly to the environment, and helps support a local who seems to be deeply committed to the prosperity of the community. I would advise you take this trip at the beginning of the your stay in the outer banks as you will develop a healthy understanding of the natural and human history of the area. Bring sunscreen, there is no shade on the water and you will be out for about 2hrs. Bugs were not an issue. read more

Nothing particularly special about the ice cream here, but there's nothing wrong with that. Serving portions are pretty big (2 scoops for a small) and the service was pretty good. The worker recognized that we didn't have any napkins and got some without us having to ask him. They also have a variety of hot dogs, but the kitchen was closed by the time I got there. read more

Our party of 15 stopped for lunch after the lighthouse. Accommodating staff, very friendly. Everyone enjoyed their food from burgers to fried shrimp platter. If you're hungry, go somewhere else or make sure you aren't hungry when you go in. The food is good: pulled pork sandwich, cheeseburger, fish sandwich all were pretty good (not enough to overlook other problems). That's where it ends however, as the kids Mac and cheese looked like a hunk of thanksgiving leftover that was lopped into a styrofoam container. Fries were ok, but the real problem was not the friendly staff which had great smiles. The epic wait kills this place. 50 minutes for what should've been 10-15, and the only explanation was "Sorry, we're really busy!" For that long of a wait, I should've wanted to yell about how good it was, but alas that was not the case. Lunch on Wednesday and somehow they aren't prepared for this, which leads me to realize they have somehow found a way to fail at kitchen management. So if you have some place to be (which we did, and did not make it which cost us money) avoid and go to any of the other places that serves about the same thing. But thanks FATTY's definitely won't forget to not stop here again. read more
