While maintaining a focus on physical activity and skill in taekwondo, the focus on values including respect, responsibility, and perseverance go far beyond just what is written on their walls. The staff work with the parents and families as a team to reinforce positive behavior and good character not just within their facility, but also at school and at home. There is a constant narrative of commitment to self improvement and to invest into helping to better our surrounding community as well. One of our children has had some trying behavior and over the past two years the staff has poured their effort into support and structure to help us guide him the right way. This is the type of community and environment all families want their children raised in. We genuinely send thanks to Grandmaster Kim and his team for all they do.

I was a gymnast in my younger years and this was the gym I attended. So when signing my son up for…read moremany different things I thought this would be a good place to start him off to help with balance,teamwork and being comfortable with movement of his body and such. Staff seemed pretty friendly overall. I can't say the "regulars" who brought there kids there were all that friendly. The first day we walked in my son yelled "HI EVERYBODY" and was met with non reactive parents and children. Every class thereafter he became more and more scared to go. I don't know why. He wouldn't tell me. He just said the kids were not nice. After a few tries of covincining and frustration through out 2 weeks, I told him he didn't have to return. Every other class he has he loves. No problems whatsoever but with this one he really was upset. I could hear it in his cry. It was a different kind of cry (moms will know what I mean). I called and left a message to tell them he will not be returning for the reasons he only told me and said somneone could call me if they had any questions. I never received a phone call back. I'm a little torn on that... well if your kid leaves then why would they call back? Then I kind of think, well if it were me I'd want to talk to the mom and have her bring the kid in to see if we could figure out the problem and help encourage him to come back since I did pay $109 for the class and $30 for a ceremony he wont be attending. I guess maybe they see it as "well if they don't want to be here then we'll focus on the ones that do"? Sometimes kids just need a little extra push from someone other than their parents so they are comfortable with their environment. Guess we'll try to find another one.

Sifu Brian Bateman is an excellent teacher who adapts to the ability of those present, customizing each class as needed. He has produced several outstanding black sash students over the years in Rochester. Traditional martial arts are often disrespected because they are commercialized for children, pressure testing and free sparring are often removed, and worse, MMA people often demand large puffy boxing gloves not suited for this style that constantly mixes grabs and yanks to setup brutal strikes. Don't let it fool you -- this is a fantastic system for self defense you will learn traditional weapons. Grandmaster Lee Kam Wing has co-written a book with Sifu Bateman, showing his dedication as an excellent disciple. I loved taking my kids to Rochester Shaolin.

In October of 2013, when my daughter was home schooled, we were told she needed to do something for…read morephysical education. We enrolled her in Kung-Fu, and this satisfied the requirement. She really liked it and moved up quickly. In the end of January of 14, I had enough of watching and decided to join officially in February. By mid summer, I was surprised that I had lost 25 pounds and that my clothes fit differently. I knew I wasn't "toned", but I never thought of myself as overweight. That October I turned 39 and decided that I wanted to be in the best shape of my life before I turned 40. I seeked advice and a meal plan from a personal trainer, and continued Kung-Fu 3 times a week, with HIIT training on the off days. By my 40th birthday, I had lost almost 60 pounds and lost 6" around my waist (according to my pants size)! I've since discontinued my restrictive meal plan and settled in at 45 pounds lost - even a year later. Kung-Fu kick started my entire health reformation, and continues to be fun! The facility is very spacious. There's a main training area and then another smaller room with mats and workout equipment for other classes or free rolling. The place is also extremely clean and the vibe is great. If you've been to a martial arts academy with a bad vibe you will know what I mean, but this place is nothing but positive. The woman at the front desk was very helpful and got us situated with a 10 day trial and my friends with rental gi's. We were then greeted by the head coach John Ingallina who is the embodiment of a professional. He is extremely welcoming, kind, professional, and explained the whole Gracie Combatives system to us. During class he was great at explaining the techniques being taught, and made good work of going to each person and ensuring they did it right. As an out of towner I was completely welcomed by the staff and other class members. I 100% would recommend this, and have done so to my 2 friends who I am very close to.

I love this gym. Kerry and Greg (the owners and instructors) would call it a "school of strength,"…read morewhich is probably more accurate. I've learned a ton from them and their workouts are great. I have been going for six months and I feel 5X stronger and the hip & knee pain that I've had for 25 years (and for which I've done my share of PT) has almost completely resolved. The monthly cost for group classes is right, given that if they were located in a big city they could probably charge that much for a single personal training session with kettlebells. The classes themselves are personalized as much as possible--I've been in classes with 20+ year-old guys trying to get jacked and 60+ year-old women working to regain their mobility--Kerry deftly manages to make sure we all get what we need. Morning classes tend to be older students; evening classes tend to be younger but I've not felt out of place in either (well, I once tried one of their kick boxing classes but that is NOT my thing! My fellow students seemed to enjoy it though). Kerry & Greg are certified through Strong First which is apparently a big deal. I commute about 15 minutes 2-3 times a week to get there (not something I've been wont to do in my life). I'm especially glad to be able to support a high-quality, local, and family-owned business rather than a big fitness chain.
