We wanted to start trying more restaurants in Astoria and in the mood for something new. My sister works with Latin American offices at her job and has been a fan of Brazilian cuisine. So we did a yelp search for the closest Brazilian place and stumbled upon Favela. Yum! We started off with some caipirinha while we waited for our appetizers. The caipirinhas were really good and they have happy hour from 5-7 where you can get it for $5! And now to the good food. We ordered Frango a Passarinho, Bolinho de aipim queijo, and Carpaccio de Carne to share between three. It was enough for us. I have to write a separate paragraph to give thanks to the staff. On top of a good drink and food, the service was great. They were friendly. I also like the design of the restaurant. This will definitely be a top place for me to eat regularly! read more

Nice and cozy place. We had the chicharron de pollo which was very good. And then we shared the churrasco of top sirloin, skirt steak and sausage which comes with rice and beans, farofa and vinaigrette sauce everything was cooked the way we asked (medium well) and the seasoning was delicious. The portions were very sizable for the price, well worth it. For dessert we had the bolo de bananas which is a flambe with bananas and vanilla ice cream - absolutely delicious. They bring it out to you on a piping hot skillet with seemingly boiling caramel surrounding the mountain of bananas, cake and ice cream. The waiters were very friendly and helpful. I found it very nice and interesting that all the waiters speak Portuguese eventhough it is not necessarily their native tongue - most of them learned on the job because a lot of their customers speak it. Although our food was delicious and I absolutely loved everything, the first thing I fell in love with was the Brazilian soda - Guarana, definitely as must try. Also, their caipirinhas are very good, they use the traditional Brazilian spirit - cachaca which makes all the difference in making a great tasting caipirinhas (they have flavored ones too). Happened to be in Astoria on a Saturday night and I've tried a lot of places in the area but never a Brazilian spot and it was perfect because I was with my Brazilian friend so she could tell me if it's authentic or not, well this place passed the test, we had the coxhina (I think) but forgot to take pictures, they are similar to a jalapeño popper but instead it's stuffed with chicken, for a entree I had the beef stroganoff which was in a creamy congac flavored sauce with mushrooms, now I don't even like mushrooms but I ate the entire dish that's just how good it was, it was flavored just perfectly, every Friday and Saturday at 8:30 they have live music so it was nice eating our meal with good music in the background, overall my friend said that this place reminded her of home and I loved eating there, amazing great service, I'll be back for sure read more

I saved 30% by booking with Savored however even with the discount this meal was very poor. I'd only assume because I was a discount client they would serve me the end and driest piece of the short rib (BAM BAM). This thing was literally stringy dry, for their "signature" dish this was hugely disappointing, and at 24 bucks outrageously overpriced(short ribs are inexpensive). The chicken chiccarons were dry and over fried (seemed re-fried and old) Skirt steak was not over cooked but very difficult to cut through. I liked the drinks but the food was terrible. I'd just like the restaurant and all restaurants to know, because we come in on a deal does not mean we aren't capable of being regulars at full prices. If it weren't for these deals I would never venture to try such new random restaurants that are out of the way. So serve us your best and we will come back- Favela, i will not be back. read more

We celebrated my sister's boyfriend's birthday here recently. I love how cozy this restaurant feels. I love the brick wall on one side and a white wall on the other decorated with native baskets. They even celebrated the holidays with cute mini Christmas trees on each table...very etsy-esque. I consulted Yelp for my food selections. I'm sorry to say, but the food was a bit disappointment. We tried some of the appetizers - Bife a Palito, Calabrisa com Aiprim, and the fried chicken pieces - all were just ok. The chicken was too crunchy, the beef too tough, and the sausage was just sausage to me. I had the Strogonoff de Carne - it's a very saucy dish with beef strips with rice and potato stix. The sauce was ok, but the beef was not tender to my liking. I hate giving bad ratings, especially to a restaurant that looks like they pride themselves in their food. I have read from other Brazilian Yelpers that this restaurant is pretty authentic, which I believe and they love this place. So for my non-Brazilian tastebuds, this was ok. Just what you expect from a place: good food, and high quality service. I haven't been there for a while, and seeing it on yelp remind me that I should visit it again, since I have good memory from the place. Maybe not a 5 stars memory, but for that you need to really make me think that they will see me again ASAP ;) They were very friendly, and very generous with the meat platters. Yum, yum, yum! I liked everything about it - my dish and other people's dishes... I had the skirt steak, which was a recommendation from the waiter, and it was so flavorful and tasty! Cooked well and just how I wanted it (med. rare). Unfortunately they could not substitute my yuca fries for a salad (trying to be low carb) but then when I had the yuca fries, they were so hard to resist. Other people got the beef rib and that was out of this world. Really tender, enough fat and flavor! We also got the shrimp for an appetizer and the portions were plentiful. My parents, boyfriend, and I went to Favela a few weeks ago for my birthday. We had reservations for 8:30, and arrived a little too early. While our table was being cleared, a server asked if we wanted to sit on the couches up front and order a drink. This was a nice gesture, because we could've just stood for 20 minutes, without being acknowledged. I tried to be adventurous, and ordered the cashew caipirinha. Yikes! This drink was definitely not the one for me! I hate to be a pain and send back food or drinks, so I tried to suck it up and drink it as fast as possible. Our table was finally ready, and we were seated and greeted right away. The server immediately knew that I was not feeling my drink at all, and nicely offered to have it changed for something else. He suggested the strawberry caipirinha instead! (A much better option for me) For appetizers we went with the smoked grilled sausage served with sautéed onions and French fries. For the main course, I opted for the Churrasco steak. The steak was cooked to medium perfection (just the right amount of pink and tenderness) and served with potatoes and vegetables. The rice and beans were served family style, and meant to share with others at the table. I give 4 stars instead of 5, because the live singer sang mostly slow-paced, mellow music. I would've preferred a more up-beat setting for a Friday night, or even more traditional style music. Nonetheless, our service was flawless, and the experience was overall very pleasant! Picanha is considered the best cut in South American countries. It's rump cover. Rump cover is supposed to be the best. Unfortunately Favela didn't do my rump cover justice. The pieces seemed a bit dry and lacking in seasoning. I've had better cuts at Fogo de Chao's an awesome place that mass produces meats. By far their Picanha was tastier and more well cooked than this place. My girlfriend did have the rib there. Rib because it's a gigantic bone with the most succulent and delicious meet there could be. I didn't have too much of it so I cannot add another star. The place was nice though with nice waiter service. I'll have to try again. read more

This place is great! I celebrated my birthday here with 20 other people. I created my own menu which was wonderful!! We had appetizers, a choice of 2 steaks and 2 chickens, beer and sangria. The amount of food was perfect for the amount of people and the price was reasonable. I told my guests they'd be required to pay a certain amount and they were fine with it. Some friends thought the appetizers were the main course and were full by the time dinner came! I would like to go back there so I could try other things on the menu. Great place! read more

Strong evening here ladies and gents. The misses and I went out to shake it up on a Tuesday night. Atmosphere was nice, very relaxing, and we were sat right away. Great service all around, super polite, and patient with our million questions. I had the sirloin steak with beans and rice, and it was out of this world. Totally spot on price wise and cooked just the way I like it. The misses had a shrimp appetizer that was spice just right. We will definitely be returning to check out the larger meat selection. The first time I went here, I was blown away by the moqueca, which is a fish stew. It was creamy, sweet with a coconut taste, and had an array of tasty ingredients to please the palate. Sadly, I've ordered this several times on subsequent visits, and each time become more and more disillusioned with this place. On my most recent visit, having the same dish, the food arrived lukewarm, which was a major disappointment. Plus, I'd ordered a caipirinha, thinking it would carry me back to Rio or São Paulo, only to find that it tasted like something I could've concocted myself. The potato croquette appetizer was the only redeeming part of this trip, at least in review terms because they came out first, but by the end of the night I was bummed to see a spot I liked down for the count. The waiter, an otherwise friendly fellow, left us waiting for the bill for over fifteen minutes, several times passing by with that "Ah!" reaction, yet still managing to return empty-handed. On earlier trips, I had foolishly talked this place up, only to have to apologetically explain that it was good the first time around. One friend had one of the steak dishes only to find that it's seasoning was less than remarkable, and another friend found one of the chicken dishes to be equally bland. It was all disheartening. When I first found this place, I thought it was a real gem. Now, it seems more like cubic zirconium. If there's anything I can still compliment, it's the romantic ambiance and the music, at least when it's live (my most recent visit was a collection of sappy romantic songs from the 80's via iPod). read more

Overall I was very impressed. I am a connoisseur of all things Brasileira and I had a great time here. It was a little more expensive than I expected but that didn't matter once I finished the meal. I started with the Calabresa com Aipim which is pan-fried smoked sausage and onions with a side of fries. What a big serving! I was by myself so I didn't eat much of it. Although it had a formidable grease level, it was very good. The perfectly cooked fries helped to manage the grease. My entrée was the Picanha Grelhada which came as five perfectly-cooked and seasoned top sirloin cuts with a lovely, fresh vinaigrette and some forofa (seasoned cassava flour). This is the reason I cannot go full-vegan. It's dishes like this that remind me why I like beef and how marvelous it can be when simply seasoned and cooked well. It was quite a lot of meat but I managed to finish nearly all of it. The staff was courteous and attentive and my water glass was never empty. I paired a glass of white with my app and a glass of red with my entrée. The white was a 2007 Riesling from Costal Ridge in California and the red was a 2006 Malbec by Bodega Catena Zapata in Mendoza, Argentina. The Riesling was nothing special but the Malbec was quite good. It paired perfectly with the Picanha. I think next time I'm going to have to bring another person along and tackle their Churasco. I had the costela bam bam which is a Fred Flintstone size short rib bone......the meat on this mammoth bone was delicious. Great and authentic Brazilian cuisine. To get straight to the point, the ambiance is very nice and classy. It's kind of dark inside, and I like that. The waitstaff are all courteous and affable. Now on to the food. For starters, I had the fried chunks of white fish. This was not only plentiful, but also satisfying. For the main course, we shared a Churrasco of chicken, sirloin, and sausage. Ordered twice from this amazing restaurant. My favorite was the Entrana Grehalda. Seasoning was just right and the meat was just as I ordered medium well. The veggies were cooked perfectly and the roasted potatoes paired great with the dish. For dessert I ordered the passion fruit mousse which I really wasn't sure how it would taste. I've been here a few times, and I am satisfied every time. Their meat is just rocking. Bam Bam Everyone needs to experience the bam bam. It is a massive hunk of meat on a short rib bone. It is like short rib on steroids. Steak (weekday lunch) Just delicious and perfectly cooked to medium rare as requested. Flavorful! Best $10 weekday steak lunch in Astoria. This place is FABULOUS!! I've lived in Astoria for 4 years and I have never heard of Favela - and I am so glad I have been introduced! It is a little off of the beaten path, on 34th street and 28th ave, but close enough to the N/Q train and the Astoria "Hot Spots" such as 30th ave and steinway, that it is still a great location. You also would be able to find parking in this area too. This is a small restaurant, maybe 15 tables or so? So on a Friday or Saturday, you definitely need a reservation. I was there on a Friday 4/1/2016 and it was busy but just right! They even had a live brazilian singer/guitar player and he was fabulous! Ambiance: Great for dinner with family, friends or date :) I just visited Rio so I knew my way around the menu a bit which was helpful. Drinks: I had the original caipirinha which was fabulous! I felt like I was on the beach in rio! I do like mine sweet so I asked for sugar on my second round and I don't think they added more - it just tasted a little more sour but it was still yummy and strong!! Appetizers: We had the salgados pastry, and we ordered chicken, cheese and beef. I had the beef. This was nothing special - I'm not a pastry or a crust person so I could do without. We also ordered the shrimp in Garlic and lemon and this was AMAZING!!! Sooo tasty, the shrimp was definitely fresh, grilled and seasoned to perfection. I will be ordering this again. Entree: I wanted the feijoada but I believe our server said they only make this on Saturdays. Bummer! We ended up ordering the churrasco for our meal and got top sirloin, skirt steak and chicken. WOW - the meat literally just melts in your mouth! They bring it out on skewers and cut the meat in-front of you but it's not a churrascaria where you hail people down for the meat. It's just presented this way if you order this. But it was amazing. It comes with Rice and beans and yuca flour and a vinaigrette. I was blown away. Probably some of the best steak I have had in New York City - hands down. Price: Not bad! The server never asked how we were enjoying it so we didn't get a chance to give feedback. Yuca fries were also a bit bland and meh. Would be wise to serve them with a dipping sauce. The meat came with like a shot glass portion of some pickled veggies in vinegar which was yummy to add flavor to the meat and rice dishes. It's tough for me to objective about this sort of place. It's Brazilian, and that makes me happy. But it's so... refined and fancy and stuff. Not my scene. In fairness, the food is pretty damned impressive. The moqueca (fish stew with coconut milk, popular in northern Brazil) and feijoada (black bean stew with pork sausage, served with rice and farofa and collards) were excellent, if not quite as good as the best I've eaten in Brazil. The caipirinhas had a ton of lime in them, and that's a good thing, in my book. Only problem is that it was a little bit on the pricey side for my taste. Our entrees were $20 and $21, respectively, and I feel like that's awfully steep for Brazilian food in Queens. For comparison's sake, an almost-as-good plate of feijoada would cost $9 at Pao de Queijo. Is the food at Favela tasty? Sure. Worth it? Only if you have some extra bucks burning a hole in your pocket. read more
