He was thorough in his assessment, offering insight and background information that helped to give a grounded understanding of my eye health. Dr. Zack Solomon is great. He's very kind, patient, personable and trustworthy. He takes his time to listen to you and answer any questions you may have. He gives you his honest opinion and doesn't force any services on you. He makes any visit you have with him enjoyable, whether it's medical related or just your routine eye exam. He's given me many daily contact trials to help me in making a decision on whether to stick with bi-weeklies or to make that jump to dailies. This was my regular eye dr for ~5 years until switching recently. Every perscription I got here was accurate and the eye exam was alway efficient and professional. My main complaint is that they sell very hard and can be difficult to work with if you want to fill your prescriptions online. I understand that businesses like this make a good margin on selling glasses, and that is totally fine, but my insurance was/is not very good and I would rather pay $10-$75 for a complete pair of adequate glasses online than 2-5x that for something comparable in the store. Every time I politely refused to purchase in store they would try to scare me away from ordering online... That negativity lead me to not want to go in or even call to request a copy of my perscription. If you are someone who prefers to get your glasses from your eye dr than this may not be an issue for you. read more

Just had one of the most pleasant experiences. I was visiting Baltimore from New York, and on my way to Baltimore I realized that I forgot my contacts at home! When I got to Baltimore, looked for a local optometrist that I could purchase contacts from. After calling around, most places couldn't get any orders in in time to give me lenses for same day. Feeling rather defeated, I called Federal Hill Eye Care where the receptionist was so eager to help. They ended up giving me enough contacts for my entire trip, and didn't even charge me for the lenses! I'm sorry that I've not written a review for this place before now. I and my family have been coming to Federal Hill for many, many years. I would venture to say, at least 20. Dr. Bregel and his staff are the absolute best around. Unfortunately, he has recently retired. I hated to see him go, but I believe he left the place in very capable hands. I have been coming to Dr. Bregel for a couple years now and I am very pleased with my new eye doctor. As a contact wearer since the 4th grade, I have been going to many eye doctors my whole life. I dreaded seeing the eye doctor either because they made you wait forever or for whatever reason I felt like I was spending a fortune each visit (and this is AFTER insurance). During my most recent visit (2/26), I was in and out of my appointment within 30 minutes and received a new pair of contacts to try out. I was amazed at the fact that I was given minimal testing. I don't know why but I think I subconsciously hate taking eye exams. In past experiences with doctors, I am usually given the full blown eye exam during each visit. I love how Dr. Bregel gets to know you and your needs, which means no time wasted. The entire staff is very helpful and friendly. Dr. Dean was referred by a colleague, and I can see why. He and his team are fantastic. This is a physician I'd go to with or without insurance coverage. He's that good and his prices are competitive, even with Lens Crafters. Dr. Dean takes the time to get to know the person behind the eyes. What we do all day has an impact on our vision, and the stress we put our eyes through. He's thorough, addresses any and all questions and didn't rush the process. The admin team even made my appointment with a specialist. If I wore glasses every day, this is the only place I'd buy frames. They offer vastly different frames and the highest quality lenses on the market. They have incredible, handmade frames designed by artists and keep them on the shelves for a limited time, which means you can create a look that's yours and yours alone. This look comes at a bit of a steep price, but if you wear glasses every day, then they're well worth it. In short, Federal Hill Eye Care is the like the Nordstrom's of their profession. This place is the best! Top-notch and affordable service. No automated machine when you call, reception is super friendly and helpful, costs are transparent and reasonable. I have astigmatism, so I've encountered many (but not all) eye doctors who take advantage and charge $150 for a 'premium' exam which insurance doesn't cover. Federal Hill Eye Care is fair and charges $50 (compared to I think $40 for a normal contact lens fit). Super grateful! Also, Dr. Dean is great. Beware that the mark up on their frames is ridiculous. I payed $249 for the Light Force Ray Ban 7035 model number frames, only to discover that the same exact model sells online for $110. So i was overcharged MORE THAN 120%. I wouldn't be surprised if the mark up on my $800 digital high index lenses is also around that %. My insurance covered all but $200 of the lenses.If you find a frame you like then don't be afraid to ask them if they will match the best online price. At least ask for 30-40% off the frames if you are buying lenses from them. Good service but you may end up feeling a bit cheated! read more

Federal Hill is amazing! I was in Baltimore for work and woke up one morning with my eye killing me. They squeezed me into their packed schedule and were so kind to me once I got there. From the service at the front desk to the eye exam to choosing frames, everything was excellent. The glasses were pretty expensive overall, but I guess that's par for the course. I've said it once and I'll say it again. I care about eye care. I don't care if you don't dare to share your cares of eye care or eye wear. I care about eye care. My eyes can't stare bare, so I must buy eye wear for my eye pair but now I can see every hair on the bear if you know what I mean. Glasses are my preferences despite the glare, but I dare not buy contacts, they just tear like a paper chair in a scissors snare. Main point is no matter what you wear, I care about eye care and everyone's fair share of eye care. Not a disability to rare so I don't care. As for me, I can bare the fare. When I lived in Baltimore, I went to Dr. Bregel, and he was wonderful every time. I felt like Dr. Bregel really cared about my eye care, and saving me money on contacts. He never even tried to sell me anything, and the free samples were abundant when he knew that I needed them.
