There were two different doctors that performed my eye exams for contacts and glasses: both doctors were wonderful and seemed to be very good at what they do. Grace helped me choose glasses and I ended up spending nearly $700 (by choice, not because she was pushy). I have a wide face, and most eye glass frames cut me off 3/4 across my eyes, and I have an almost non existent bridge on my nose - so choosing frames can be exhausting. However, Grace jumped right in and knew right away which brands would be helpful, and which to avoid, and she has a very keen eye for fit and design that made me feel happy about my purchases. I ended up with a prescription pair of eye glasses, prescription sunglasses, polarized lenses to wear when I wear contacts and then contact lenses. Grace was very quick and accurate about the pricing, and what discounts I was eligible for - plus she just took really good care of me! I went from someone who can never find any eye glasses to having three pairs! She also advised me about the pros and cons of the Transition lenses. But I had become increasingly dissatisfied with the services and prices at Katzen. When I last went and the doctor didn't catch that I needed bifocals and I tried to live life without being able to see anything while wearing my new $400 pair of glasses, I decided to start researching other options. America's Best was the choice closest to my home. I made an appointment and couldn't believe that I didn't have to wait six months to be seen. They scheduled me for the next week! I didn't have high expectations for the service. The doctors and technicians at Katzen always have a difficult time using their equipment on me because my neck and spine are fused and I can't rest my chin on the chin rest so they can puff the air or shine the bright white light into my retina. But all the equipment at America's Best are mounted on a table which raises and lowers. I didn't even have to get out of my wheelchair for any of it. The technician, Savannah, was sweet and understanding and never made me feel like my body was making her day more complex than necessary. I did have to get out of my wheelchair and into the exam chair for the doctor, though. It wasn't an issue for me. That's one of the reasons I travel with Jeremy. He picks me up and puts me down in the places I need to be. The doctor was quick and efficient and figured out my new bifocal prescription lickety split. This was the very first time in my life that I could choose any frame that I wanted. I was overwhelmed and went with the first pair that I saw that resembled the frames that I already wore. I'm really not comfortable trying on glasses. I don't enjoy looking in the mirror. I probably could have found something cheaper, but it didn't occur to me to ask at the time. The glasses were ready for pick up within two weeks. Savannah helped me again, making sure they fit properly, and reminded me that I could come in again at any time to get them adjusted, if/when needed. It's been weird being able to see again. I thought it would take longer for me to get used to the line in the middle of the lens. Getting old sure is an adventure!

I was given a discount and I appreciate that however, I felt that I should have gotten my money back for the unopened boxes of contacts that I could not use. The answer was no. So, I would say this... the doctor made an error and he did not refund me for that error. Then, when I ordered another box of the corrected prescription, I was given a discount. Unfortunately, the contacts came back WRONG again. The office ordered the same incorrect contacts that I already had. So I gave them back and they got me the right ones. All in all, there were mistakes that I consider relevant to my rating- could have been better. I would not recommend this outfit although the doctor has all the best machines and is very knowledgeable. If he makes a mistake, he will not give you your money back. But even more unreasonable than that, the women that I spoke to about the problem and appealed to them to compensate me somehow- were truly not interested in helping me out. The expense of the glasses was $600.00. The contacts totaled $750.00. Truly too expensive if they are not going to care about their mistakes.
