Few institutions today so artfully blend the illusion of service with the poetry of inefficiency. I had, in my naivety, entrusted FedEx with the modest task of delivering a parcel--an act comparable, I now realize, to asking a Shakespearean clown to conduct brain surgery. The endeavor was billed as "two-day shipping," though I can only presume those two days are calculated on a Martian calendar or perhaps within the folds of a wormhole, where time and reason cease to apply. The package's route, as detailed by the tracking page, read like the itinerary of a disoriented aristocrat on an unchaperoned Grand Tour: from Atlanta to Chicago by way of Dallas, then a leisurely sojourn in Memphis (twice), before a curious detour to a distribution center whose coordinates I believe lie within a parallel dimension. One can only assume my humble parcel was in search of enlightenment. Customer service--ah, yes. A labyrinthine delight. Upon calling, I was treated to the dulcet tones of Muzak that surely once scored the fall of Rome, followed by a succession of representatives who exhibited the keen enthusiasm of overcooked cabbage. Their responses, delivered with all the warmth of an automated tombstone, assured me that "everything was on schedule," a phrase which now joins "the check is in the mail" in the pantheon of Great Lies. When the package did at last arrive, some 11 days later, it bore the visible trauma of its odyssey. Torn, dented, and bearing mysterious boot prints, it looked less like a parcel and more like a veteran of trench warfare. And yet--miracle of miracles--the contents remained intact, a testament not to FedEx's competence, but perhaps to divine intervention. In conclusion, I extend my sincere thanks to FedEx for this unforgettable experience in absurdist theatre masquerading as parcel delivery. I am forever changed--and irrevocably inclined to seek alternate couriers in all future endeavors. read more

I'll keep it brief: I had a company sending a product via FedEx. I had it shipped to this ship center in lieu of sending it to my apartment because it was easier for me to pick it up via them, especially since I needed to sign for it. On the day it was available for pick up (...mind you, it took 3 days to get to California to Brooklyn, then another 3 to get from Brooklyn to Manhattan...), I stood in line for about five-ish minutes while other people were helped. I was helped by Maurice, who was efficient and friendly. However, when I got my package (a box placed in a large yellow padded envelope), I was surprised to see one end of the envelope partially ripped open and the box inside opened! My product was in tact (thank goodness!), but when I inquired, I was told very non-nonchalantly but in a rushed manner, "Oh...maybe it got caught on a convener belt. Sorry." There was no other explanation, inquiry to investigate what happened, or real sincere apology. They wanted to get onto the next customer. And so goes my likely only trip to that FedEx Office Ship Center. read more

I see that I am not the only customer to be very disappointed with this FedEx branch. I needed them for both a passport ID and an envelope with a tracking number. 1) Because I am French, I called them to ask if they did the specific EU format. They said they did. When I arrived there, I was surprised that they used a white background and I repeated that it was for a EU Passport. An employee took my picture and handed me a set of square prints with a white background, which is what the US demand, not the EU. The picture had to be tossed and I looked for another shop (Ivy Stationery, very close by, who did the right job but are expensive). 2) An employee tried to help me filling in the label but couldn't get through the whole process. The store manager took over, was helpful and I thought I was done with this. Unfortunately, when I went back home, I saw on my bank account that I had been charged twice for the same item. I wanted to file this complaint on the FedEx website, but they didn't offer this choice. I had to go back to the store, showed them evidence of the double billing and was refunded the extra charge. But instead of being apologetic, both staffers and managers were very unfriendly. I don't know who the manager spoke of when he said to an employee "we'll have to eat this". This may be the reason they were upset. But it's not my fault if they made a mistake. Let me add that I understand everyone can make mistakes, but if you want to keep your customers, you should acknowledge them and be able to offer apologies. And when, back home, I tried to file a complaint with FedEx, I was cut off several times, had a difficult time understanding one rep whose phone microphone had false contact, and didn't really understand why the billing department said they needed access to an invoice when my claim was about an unjustified double billing. read more

If your student attends Columbia University or Barnard College and you think it is easier to send a package to this location for pick up; think twice. Moreover, if you call the store and ask for help- they will do the opposite of what you have asked them to do and say they are trying to help your student out. 1. I received some of the best customer service that I've ever had at this location. The person who helped me was named, Kelsey. He was extremely knowledgable and careful with my package. He communicated everything clearly and was extremely polite. Even though my shipment was small and simple, he took great care to make sure that everything was done in an organized and professional manner. My orders get printed on time, but you need to anticipate adding an additional 20-30 minutes to your time for this location to actually picking it up. Lines are continuously out the door, and work is astronomically slow. Now that I've done this a few times and know to expect to wait a while, I can deal with it. What truly knocks all of this down to 1 Star is the serious attitude I receive anytime I call for info or go in store to pick up. It is continuously the same gentleman. To top it off, he eats at the counter on the job, which is just so unprofessional. I can really understand sneaking a snack in during the day-- I really can-- but don't be customer-facing about it. And PLEASE start answering your phones with some respect to your customers. It's so undignified and telling of your employees when you answer the phone with "What?" and end it with "Yup." I desperately wish I was closer to another location, and sometimes print elsewhere even if it's out of the way. THAT is how much I hate this place. read more

Apparently I'm never home to pick up packages -- and I work from home. I think the fedex lady doesn't know how to use my intercom. Nevertheless, it's easy to just tell them to redirect the package to the fedex store so I can just pick it up at my convenience. And this store seems pretty compact but the guy behind the counter knows what he is doing. After less than a 10 min wait, I had my package and was out the door. It's still 3 stars because come on, how hard is it to work the intercom? I can't even figure out *how* the delivery gal is messing up. When she calls, I say hello, and then I hear nothing. Then I hear the sound of dialtones on the keypad. I guess I should just let her in on that basis since I know what she does, but still, it's your job to know how to work people's intercoms.. The UPS guy figures it out every time and leaves my package behind the stairwell, just the way I likes it. .. and that's the end of that white whine :) read more

'tis the season, and my favorite Boston ladies Liz G. and Michelle M. decided to ship me a package. Being an NYC professional, I was at work when they tried to deliver the darn thing. Never fear! Michelle M. told me. You can call them! You can pick it up at a store! So after work last Friday night, I decided to go to said store and pick up my box. I learned fast to be afraid. Very, very afraid. I'm going to knock this place and feel kind of bad about it at the same time. The woman who was behind the counter (she was obviously the one in charge) was doing a good job of handling difficult people. But she was doing it very slowly. There was also another employee who was definitively not helping people and the line grew to about 8 or 9 people long while I was waiting. Customers should be your priority, FedEx. I was also waiting to pick up a package for nearly 40 minutes. Even when the post office is BUSY it's still not that bad. This store and package-picking-up experience shouldn't have taken as long as it did. I know it's close to Columbia University and I know you won't always get two people in front of you who are trying to ship internationally, but... still. If you had to listen to the ugly pretentious girl in a hat behind me talk about not being hosed down in some protest, you'd be justifiably cranky, too. I should have just woken up early and gone Saturday morning - 7:15 PM on a Friday night should not be destination: FedEx. On the plus side, they have great hours. I will, however, ask my friends in the future to just mail me stuff at work. read more

Misery loves company. Unfortunately (for me) I am that "company" every so often. Maybe I was spoiled by the FedEx center on 27th and 7th Ave. Maybe my standards are too high? Maybe not. This location avoids one star because my items somehow make it to their destination on time as promised. The staff here does not have a sense of urgency or organization. I'd swear that folk's in N'awlins work faster (no offense to my southern folks) and care waay more. For the most part, I end up waiting an enormous amount of time on a short line. If you don't need receipts or a person to actually help you, use FedEx.com for your labels and the drop boxes on 116th Street or Lewisohn Hall. DO NOT GO HERE!!! The worker was lazy, rude and had major attitude!!! I had 2 boxes shipped over from California. When I came to pick them up the worker there demanded my tracking number even though the boxes were addressed to myself & I called the morning before to make sure they arrived at the store. He gave me such a hard time about it. I then asked for help to carry the boxes out of the store into the cab a few feet away, and he did not want to help me and was reluctant to. He pushed, not carried my box across the store floor (luckily I did not have anything too fragile) and brought it to the bottom of the stairs, but just walked back in the store & left me to carry the 2 boxes down street into the taxi! I had some items printed here and they did not cut it how I needed it to be. They took to to a different location for them to cut and I was fine with picking it up there since I was going to be in that area. I got there two hours (to the location on 72nd) after and they said they would only take an hour and they weren't even done. I had to wait maybe another 30-40 min for them to cut it. When I got the cards, luckily I opened the stack and opened a random stack to see that they didn't finish cutting it! They were all in different sizes. It was horrible! They had to cut down to size. By the time I got the whole stack they were all in different sizes. I don't think I'll ever used FedEx again. read more

I'm giving this location 1 star for refusing to take my box. As a result, I had to carry a huge box to another location who gave me no issue with accepting my box. Instead of staff assisting me with accepting my box, she was more concerned with selling me a box. FedEx is suppose to follow the same rules. read more

Very helpful staff! Dropped off a pre-labeled package for return, but the label I had been sent had a faulty barcode. I expected to have to get a new label on my own, but Maurice B patiently helped me out and was able to re-print the barcode so I didn't have to make a second trip. This place is absolutely awesome, and has saved me many a time. The staff behind the desk are competent and calm, and there's never a problem having them help you, even with things like packing, or finding out how to get your delayed package switched to another place. They are just the best informed FedEx staff I've ever met, and I've met a lot. I go here instead of going to other FedEx stores as much as humanly possible, even if I have to go out of my way, because I know they will be friendly and truly helpful! My limited experience with this location was that they were friendly and efficient - of course, there wasn't much of a line when I was there. The 2-star rating is for FedEx itself. As with UPS, apparently, the drivers don't actually have to deliver the items when they're due. They repeatedly note that they attempted delivery and that the recipient wasn't available or that the location was closed and it's always a lie. This last time, I got a delivery exception text that the location (a business) was closed at a certain time, but it was a full 2 hours before that time when I got the text! They are shameless liars and UPS is no better as their goal is to deliver everything to an access point and make you go pick it up yourself. AND Lasership will steal your deliveries. read more

I never thought I'd write a rave review for a postal center, but Oh. Em. Gee. This place is like going to an ice cream shop. They're super friendly, quick, efficient, and helpful. And they apologize for how long it took (even though THEY were hard at work helping me the whole time!). If you want to ship something fragile, they'll carefully wrap and pack it for you.
