I came here for the first time after not having a haircut in years. All I wanted was a trim and some long layers in my hair. During the consultation, I expressed how I did not want to lose much length. I explained I wanted layers that framed my face. I had hair down my butt, and when I left the salon, my hair was just below my shoulders when straightened. I can barely tie it back in a pony tail now, there were no long layers, and it's clear the stylist wasn't used to working with curly hair. The stylist was friendly, but, I'll never be back. I have been coming to Felipe for 20 yrs! Wow that makes me sound old, but their cuts and color are so fresh that can't possibly be the case. Felipe has cut my hair , he is amazing! So I cut my hair maybe once a year and the last time I cut it I was unhappy and I've been going to the same hairstylist for awhile so I've been on the search for a new place that is inexpensive, yes I know this place is a bit pricey, but I got a Groupon for $30 which included cut, condition, and style and I loved it! Piper was very friendly and made the process extremely comfortable. She asked me specifically what I was looking for and follow-up with me to make sure she wasn't cutting my hair too short and kept a fun conversation going. She added beautiful layers to my hair and curled it gorgeously! I got so many compliments from strangers when I finished my errands for the rest of the day. Not sure if the Groupon is still available, but it was worth every penny. Since I only cut my hair once or twice a year I might just give in and pay the $65 because I really liked Piper and the way my hair turned out. read more

I love Felipe's! I have been going there for years also. The only reason that I didn't give it a 5 star is the shampoo person. She tardy at getting my hair rinsed and seems to be preoccupied with talking to others. It irritates me. She doesn't spend any time with a great shampoo massage or temples and neck like I have had at other salons. She's been there for years. I actually went to another salon because of the shampoo person. But then in the end I returned to Felipe's, Juan, the stylist and ALL of the colorists are 5 stars!!! I've been going to Felipe Salon since I was 14 years old, so that's 15 years now. They are the best. I've lived in the city now for 7 of those 15 years and I still make the trip to their salon (only 20 minutes on the weekends!). I have tried my fair share of the "best" city salons and I keep going back to Felipe's. Felipe Salon has everything a major city salon, like Salon Buzz, has and has two major advantages: 1) prices are way more affordable and 2) availability is better. Plus the front desk is so friendly and accommodating, unlike the stone faced, "I'm way to busy to deal with you" reception desks of most city salons. I'm a very picky, fashion forward, young 20-something (29 still counts!) and Felipe Salon never disappoints. Oh yeah! My Mom has been going to Felipe Salon for years. We wanted to have a Mom and daughter spa day so I agreed to go there as well. I went to Kelly to have my brunette hair turned red. She bleached me out damaging 3 inches of my hair. My hair ended up looking nothing like the picture and was a radically different color on the top of my head vs the bottom. I called a week later and let Kelly know that I was unhappy. She was accommodating and polite to have me back and fix it. Unfortunately when I arrived another stylist kept getting into the middle of our consultation and trying to convince me that my hair wasn't that bad I kept trying to tell me what to do. I felt ganged up on and frankly, I did not ask for her opinion nor did I trust it based on the color of her own hair. Every effort I made to politely let her know I wasn't interested in her opinion was ignored. I eventually had to tell my stylist that I didn't respect her co-workers opinion and that I wasn't interested. Kelly was able to return me to brunette. Although I don't hate the color I don't love it either. It faded quite a bit over the last week, I'm upset over paying so much money to end up close to what I originally had and having to cut off quite a bit of hair. Protecting the integrity of my hair was never discussed in the consultation and if she wasn't able to give me what I asked for without ruining my hair she should have stated this. The two stars are for Kelly's grace in trying to handle a bad situation and the courtesy of the salon's reception desk. I also noticed quite a few women with long blonde high-lights. They looked pretty. Not my thing but seems they have the "oak Brook, suburbia" thing down. If that's what you are looking for I bet you'll be happy. It's what came next that put me over the edge. I sat down to have my hair blown out with another stylist. (I can't remember her name.) She convinced me to let her cut off the dead over-bleached ends. I agreed to do this because she communicated what she thought needed to be done and listened to me explain what I wanted. She made it sound like we were on the same page...Unfortunately what she said and did were very different. I said..."I'd like it a bit longer in the back and more of a U shape in the back" Very simple instructions. I said "think more gypsy and shaggy, not blunt." She nodded enthusiastically. What I ended up with is a cut that is blunt all the way around with the front of my hair longer than the back! When she showed me the end result I pointed out that I had lost my shape and she offered to fix it. I was in shock over how much she took off. More then we discussed. I didn't trust her to fix it nor did I want to lose more length then I already had to so I declined. I'm still trying to get the courage to go get it fixed. My hair is past shoulder length. There is never a time this length looks cute with shorter in the back than the front. I trusted her to have good taste. She had cute style. I don't think this was a matter of her taste but rather inexperience. The final straw... She then told me she needed to have her work checked by the owner! It is simply unprofessional (and feels a bit scammy) to not share this upfront! Had I known she was an amateur I would not have allowed her to cut my hair. Felipe came over and made some adjustments. I'm not clear if she even shared my requests with him. I tried to communicate with him but he brushed off my words and it was clear he didn't care. He was obviously in a hurry. In the end I was then charged $65 for a student haircut!!! A haircut I needed because the first color job ruined my ends and I was not warned of this nor were there attempts made to prevent it. A haircut I shouldn't have even paid for as they damaged my hair! On top of the money I wasted on the coloring and all the tips and now the time I have to wait to grow out my hair to even get back to a style I like. If you want blonde highlights and a blunt soccer Mom cut this is the place for you. It seems they have that down. (just be sure they don't fry your ends...Oh no worries. They'll be happy to charge you for a bad haircut to "fix" it for you) What a waste. read more

This place is WAY over rated. They are charging LA salon prices for crappy hair cuts. I have layered hair and like it nicely blended. My hair is pretty much two lengths, super choppy. The person washing hair should immediately be replaced. She sprayed water all over me, in my ears and then didn't even towel the hair so I had water dripping down my back through the crappy haircut. Kelly is the best! She is the only colorist I have ever been 100% satisfied with. She goes above and beyond to make sure my blonde highlights look perfect. My mom and best friend now go to kelly as well! She's friendly, funny and just a joy to be around when I'm in her chair. I do not live near the salon unfortunately but I drive an hour to see her every time!! If you want someone who listens and truly loves doing color go see kelly. My mother started seeing kelly about a year ago and on her last visit kelly noticed a TINY spot on her ear and told my mom about it. A week later my mom was diagnosed with stage 2 skin cancer after showing what kelly had found to her dermatologist. My mother does not use yelp and asked me to share this to spread awareness. Without Kelly's discovery who knows if my mom would have ever known about this. She will be having surgery in a few weeks to be cancer free :) I am forever thankful for Kelly's attention to detail and how caring she was to my mother. Most people would not have thought anything about this after seeing it! We love kelly! read more

Felipe is awesome, I have my hair done by him whenever we have a black tie or formal event and people ALWAYS comment on how great my hair looks. Richard is also wonderful. My hair looks amazing when I leave the salon EVERY time. I am in my 50s and have been going there for over 10 years now and would never go anywhere else now. I agree though with the shampoo girl. I dread getting my hair washed to the point that sometimes I was it myself before I go so I don't have to sit in that chair and feel like my hair is being ripped off my head. I wasn't sure what to get done and she had great suggestions for me and made sure that I was 100% ok with it before continuing forward. I absolutely love the way it turned out- I would highly recommend anyone to come here to get your hair colored or cut! I am so excited to have found this place!! Okay, so, back-story: I lived in Florida for about 20 years. My next-door neighbor became a hair stylist and was *my girl* from about the time I was 16 and started getting my hair highlighted and layered and all that. She was amazing, I could literally sit down in her chair, say "I want something new, but that will look good" and she would NEVER disappoint. I absolutely LOVED her. Fast forward to 2007, and I moved to Chicago. I have gotten my hair cut/colored four times now since I've lived here--and every time with less-than-desirable results. Either I say what I want and they just do something else, or they attempt to give me a flattering cut and it just does not please me at all. It literally got to the point where I would go a whole year without so much as TRIMMING my split ends just so that I could wait until we went to Florida to visit my husband's family, and make an appointment with my girl down there. Enter: Groupon. Felipe Salon--right across the street from where I work. A great price for a cut, deep-conditioning treatment, and blow-dry. Whatever, I'm at yet another point in my forever long-haired life where I'm bored and want to chop it all off again. So I take a chance at another salon, get the Groupon, make an appointment, and here I am. Okay, so Peter was my guy. I had a couple photos of possible styles I wanted, but since (as I said) I'm a forever long-haired girl, I wasn't really sure which would look best on me. He was sooo awesome talking it out with me and helping my indecisive self come to a conclusion. And then when it came to the actual execution, he did not disappoint!! I had a great time talking to him, and he made my hair look amazing. Focus on what really counts? What really counts is a customer getting what they want, is it not? I felt this salon did not cater to all ages. Fashion changes all the time and we look to hair salons to keep up with the trends. I wanted what what new in Haircolor, and they did not deliver, bottom line. Maybe Lisa can do an ombré, but the gentlemen I spoke to did not. And he did not tell me there was Another person in the salon I could go to that knew how to do it. There's nothing wrong with charging more, thier prices were not an Issue for me. I'm sure the do very lovely old lady hair, the ones that were in the salon that day seemed happy. My mother and I have been coming here for years. Felipe does a great job on my moms hair. I've seen Rudy, the junior stylist, in the past. He does a good job. I've also seen Peter, who did an AWESOME job with my hair! I just went in to get a no chip manicure with Kim, she was so friendly and did a great job! I'm so happy with the way my nails turned out! I love the overall feel of the salon. When you walk in, it's warm and inviting. The receptionist, Tori, is always so super sweet and friendly! She always makes me feel like family when I go there because she always asks about my kids and everything. This is probably the best salon I've ever been to. Other salons I've been to aren't as friendly and welcoming and I don't like the feel. Or the receptionists are too stuck up. At Felipe salon this isn't the case. They're all so friendly! Cannot say enough good things about this place! Majority of the women in my family go to Felipe's and have been for a number of years. I recently went from blonde to a fun shade of magenta. After a few weeks of the "fun color"I was over it. Allyson went above and beyond to help me get back to a normal color! She is so much fun to talk too & is full of information about everything.She recommended products that have saved my over processed hair. Every time I went back to fix it a little more she would always mention about wanting to keep the integrity of my hair. Which too my old hairdresser was not a concern.
