What I love about Rudy's is that if I wake up on a Sunday and think, "I want a haircut," I can make a same-day appointment. It's been almost two weeks since my haircut, but I am still loving it so much that I was compelled to leave a review for the wonderful Tara. I've been coming here for a couple of years now and I'm always left satisfied with the work that Tara does for me. All the barbers here do excellent work but there's no one I'd rather work with than Tara. With that being said, this last appointment I had was off. Beneath the scent of incense and coffee scented candles there was a pungent rotting smell that seemed to be protruding from the walls. As much as I love (and need) to see Tara and get my haircut I'd rather not sit there and have to inhale that again. read more

No complaints. The location is ideal for me, since I work over at Childrens Hospital right down the street. It's also a super hipster-y spot, with awesome decor and fun music! Got my hair hacked off (about 10 inches to donate), then washed, cut, and blow-dried/ styled. All for $35 (and a $5 tip). Liliana - the stylist - did a great job! She gave me killer bangs that can either be styled to cover my eyes (for a hip/ angsty look) or side-swept (for work). She also layered the back to give my short hair some much needed body. okay, so I lied...I have one tiny, itty-bitty complaint: where are the hair magazines?!?!?!?! There are a lot of mags for sale, but I'm used to going into a salon and being able to look up styles so I can decide and show the stylist.... I have very mixed feelings about this place. I was told by a friend that haircuts were fast here but I didn't think this fast. I got a trim and it was like 10 minutes and that was $45.. and the person who gave me the haircut was kinda cold shouldered. Like I was bugging her for a haircut and it was a waste of her time... I mean I guess it's good if I don't have time and i need a 10 minute, $45 haircut. My friend asked me why it was so fast and asked if they had washed my hair and I said they did not wash my hair. My friend then told me that they include that in the cut so I was extra confused I wasn't offered that either. I wanted to like this place because it's very cool inside (temperature wise and style) but it gave off "too cool to care" vibes instead. Probably a good option for the neighborhood tho. read more

Casey is who I see, and she's a fantastic stylist. She's fun, efficient, detailed and really cares about her work. I always get compliments on my hair - all thanks to her! Went here today to get a cut and color. The haircut was so amazing and they really did a good job of blending my hair extensions. And then I got a root color touch up and they RUINED my hair. The color is wrong, my ear is stained Red brown, my roots are lighter than my base of hair and my dark blonde roots are now reddish brown. And they charged me full price and said nothings wrong with your hair. Awful customer Service from the receptionist, the colorist didn't even apologize or offer to make it right. They charged me more than the quote and didn't consult before hand. The only good thing was my haircut. I now have to wear a hat to my best friends wedding tomorrow And my hair extensions are ruined. read more

Came in to get a trim for my short hair. My stylist was so nice so I gave a star for that but she made my hair look like it was for a 50 year old mom. The stylist actually said "you look like a mom" Really disappointed because i love this place. Don't know what happened this time She also put the hair cut on Facebook live and at first I guess it was fine but she didn't ask. I've gotten cuts at Rudy's for a long time and accepted that it's hit or miss. This time, I'll admit that I gave a poor description of what I wanted. I walked in flustered and uncertain. But instead of getting a clear idea out of me, the stylist just hacked away at my hair, which now looks like a mom mullet and sticks out every which way. Instead of layers, I basically have a huge chunk of hair missing somewhere in the middle of the total length. She had very little regard for the texture of my hair. Then, once she'd finished, she put in zero product and simply slammed my hair with a blow dryer. She didn't even part my hair, or ask where I like my part. Nor did she finish drying. I walked out with wet hair, said "I love it!" because Rudy's pressures you to play it cool, then cried my entire drive home. read more

It's jarring to go from your old competitor of so many years with all the style and rock & roll and fun to such a minimalist atmosphere. It doesn't really work with such a big space. The haircuts here are fine enough (neither great nor terrible, although a bit on the pricy side), but they canceled my scheduled appointment, without good reason (the stylist hadn't come in that day and nobody saw fit to tell me), literally ten minutes before it was scheduled to happen on a Friday afternoon. I was already in an Uber on my way there, so that's wasted money on a ride I didn't need to take. Rudy's didn't offer to do anything to make it right other than suggesting that I stick around for the next appointment, three hours later, or reschedule for the next day. I consider this to be really poor and inconsiderate service and will likely not be returning to Rudy's again. read more

I've gone to this barbershop about four times now and it's always reasonably priced haircuts and they always look pretty awesome and the person doing my hair is always very friendly has great tips about what I should do to keep my hair healthy and fI'll. The last time I went it was not the case I got this older man who was sitting on the far left side where there's only about three chairs. He let me explain a little bit of what I wanted and I don't know if he didn't understand completely or if he just didn't care the look on his face looks like he just didn't care that he was going to do a simple trim and haircut. And the end product showed that it was a $35 haircut that was not up to par with what I know Rudy's to be. I don't mind paying $35 for haircut but it should show that cost a little bit more in the $17 haircut I usually get. I had to get another haircut a week later because it just wasn't working right the only thing that he did was make it shorter but the shape and the fading and everything that goes into a men's haircut just wasn't there. I will probably go back eventually but I just moved to dtla so it's a little out of the ways. I would say if you go get the younger guy that sits on the far right (if you're facing the door) he's friendly and he knows what he's doing. And he cares I'm sure this older guy can do a great job but because he didn't seem to care or want to do my hair it just didn't turn out great. I gave this place four stars only because of my previous experiences. They've all been wonderful. read more

They have some really talented barbers and colorists. It can be a bit "hit or miss", but you can find someone you really like and just stick with them. The vibe inside the place is really cool and their pricing is excellent. And you can just walk in off the street and be in-and-out with a great cut/style in 30-40 minutes. The reason that I gave them 3 stars instead of 5 is because they are unfortunately adjoined with Caffe Vita coffee shop. Outside the coffee shop there are always groups of drug addicts hanging around the tables openly doing drugs in public (including marijuana, which you can't avoid breathing in). Sadly, it's impossible to go to Rudy's without being exposed to the drugs/addicts. So if you're a drug addict yourself, you might not mind -- otherwise, be on alert. read more

Rudy's? Floyd's? Is it worth toying with which excellent barbershop to get to? Yep. Especially once you have lived in LA long enough to know the history of each (Rudy's is the brilliant original of the two, which started out as a tattoo parlor and barbershop in Seattle in its Grunge heyday). Floyd's evidently even tried to sue Rudy's. But I digress. Their staff and talent are superior. I need to have my hair cut every three weeks, or it tends to become unruly, and it feels good to get affordably pampered by professionals who discuss hsircare plans with you, and seem to genuinely care. Their quality of products (Davines from Italy, Bumble&Bumble, and Grants, along with their own aromatherapeutic line of soaps and haircare, candles, and shower bombs, AND cool sweaters and totebags) are a good deal for the price (and they still support good local causes). If you want expertise, ask for Becca, or Daniel. You can't go wrong. It's summer! Hair grows faster once June gloom blows over. Thank you, Rudy's & Co! read more

Christina is the best! i've been getting my hair cut by Christina for a few months now, and i can honestly say, i won't trust anyone else to cut my hair. not only can she do a killer fade, but is skilled with both scissors AND a straight razor! i have really coarse/straight hair, that is difficult to style. when i first sat in Christina's chair, she listened to what i wanted done, my hair challenges, and was very consultative. after she worked her magic, i couldn't have been happier with my cut, and she's been my go-to stylist ever since. :) make an appointment online (how easy is that!), and go see Christina. you won't be disappointed! read more

Used to love this place but they have a new system where they make you wait even if you have an appointment. I'm not making this up. Had a 4pm cut last week. Cut started at 4:15. Another day I bring Georgio in for a cut at 2pm. Three cutters sat around until 2:15 and then called him over. They're entirely too rigid with their system. read more

I can't praise this establishment enough! My whole experience was perfect. I had an appointment at 12 pm and I got there a little less than ten minutes late (my bad) but they were still so courteous and took me in. I love the whole vibe of the place and it's very clean. I noticed the receptionist was cleaning a lot and he very kindly let me charge my phone at the front desk. I also love that the shop does charity and non-profit work. Literally was out the door by 3:50pm. Absolutely amazing talent. Great layered cut with texture and shape - even more miraculous considering I have thick wavy Asian hair. I give Rudy's four stars because I value a fair but convenient haircut above a great but inconvenient cut, yet I dont want a haircut that sucks. Here's my five point plan on how to do Rudy's: 1.) Call in advance to get on the list. Ask them how long the wait is. Time your commute to arrive just before the wait time expires. 2.) When you've arrived, tell them. Congratulations, you've just cut in front of all of the walk-ins in a perfectly legitimate fashion. Your wait should be 1-5 minutes if you timed your commute correctly. I usually bring a magazine but never get to read it. 3.) Don't ask for anything fancy / unusual, and don't expect much. I'm a professional guy - I strive to be presentable, not to impress Silverlake chicks who wear legwarmers and white sunglasses. Here's an example of what I say: "Leave it kind of long on the top, but clean up the sides and back, please." 4.) Don't expect a particularly interesting discussion. You're not Richard Nixon, and your stylist is not David Frost. Fortunately they play good music. 5.) Pay cash and don't forget to tip the person who cut your hair. If you do those things you will either be satisfied based on reasonable expectations, or pleasantly surprised. Your haircut will not suck; It will range from acceptable to really good. Your wait will be minimized so you can get on with your day. read more

The Good: Fairly cheap (35 bones, including tip, for longer hair). Okay street parking. Doesn't take too long to get in a chair if you call ahead to put your name on the waiting list. Uses fancy Bumble and Bumble products. Can go to the neighboring Vista Theatre or Good Luck Bar afterward with brand new coif. The Eh: Super hit or miss. Like tossing a hat on a monkey. I've gotten only a handful of great cuts over the years and all I ask for is a simple, layered, medium length 'do. Nothing kooky. Last time, my layers looked so chunky-bad, even after I asked the stylist to fix it a few times. I had to spend just as much elsewhere to clean up that crazy mess. I know I can't expect exquisiteness all the time from a low budget hipster Super Cuts, but c'mon. Might as well slap a bowl on my head and call me Alfalfa. Classic scissor skills aren't too much to ask. read more

While I'm in no way, shape, or form, good-looking enough to get my hairs cut here, it is really close to where I live and they give good hair so I usually go there with a paper bag over my head and a garbage bag over my body. They accommodate me but cutting-out the section of the paper bag where my hair is and by sticking double-sided tape all over the chair so I don't slip off in my garbage bag. Everyone who cuts your hair here is really nice, they have good magazines to read while you wait (ask them and they'll cut out holes in your paper bag so you can read), and good music playing too (see holes, ears). Sometimes the people at the register have a little attitude , but they usually have really good haircuts so it's OK. Go get cut here. read more

Went here looking to pick up some Pomade. The customer service was non existent, as in I walked around for a good 10-15 minutes, no Hi, need help finding anything?, nothing. After deciding not to give this place one red cent of my money, I looked around some more, here's what I've concluded. 1) The marketing team at Rudy's are good at what they do. They've partnered up with people like Ace hotels & Chubby Boob to legitimize the Rudy's brand, and make all of you want to buy into it. 2) There have been a lot of Hair Salons jumping on the "Barbershop" bandwagon, and Rudy's is one of them. They were just at the forefront of the bandwagon, maybe even running a little ahead of the horses if you will. Anytime a "Barbershop" is selling Pomade for more then $12, or they are selling Face wash, Bodywash, or Salon Products like Bumble & Bumle, you're not a "Barbershop" you're a Pinche Salon!! If I took my Grandfather here, he would've punched me in the fuckin face for taking him to a Salon. 3) Just because Rudy's throws some art on the walls, and sell art magazines doesn't make them a Barbershop either. It's a feeble attempt to capture the youth market, you know that Shepard Fairy is so hot right now. And while I'm sure Rudy's is successful at what they do, it's their marketing that's getting people in the door, because their customer service isn't keeping return customers coming back. So, think twice before you pay $30 for a $15 haircut. I will Gladly drive 45 minutes to my regular Barber, Stay Gold Barbershop in Fontana. Where you can flip through nudie mags, car mags, drink beers, listen to good music, and all the Barbers know youre name. Sure I'd be paying more with the drive, the cut, etc. but at the end of the day I'm supporting a real Barbershop, not some fake Salon dressed up like a "Barbershop". read more

When I was in junior high, a few classmates of mine went all 80s/90s punk with mohawks and green hair, etc. They were so badass! Then I saw one particular guy going up the stairs to class using the handrail. And then I thought, "you're using a handrail like a grandma, you're not so badass." Enter Rudy's. It could thrive just as well as a grunge factory shopping center but it just happens to have people who cut hair. I went for a while with Marie, who's since left and is now at Fur Hair Gallery (see review). However, the place was trying way too hard; I couldn't tell the stylist anything about what I wanted without yelling over the music. The two haircuts from other people were not good at all and made me look like a hedgehog. Part of hipster culture is having a bad haircut (e.g. mullet) and playing it off like it's cool, isn't it? Caveat emptor: you get what you pay for. read more

I get bad hair cuts. If I've gotten my hair cut 300 times in my life 2 have been good cuts, 8 have been decent cuts and 290 have been a really big mistake. The cut I got here was about a 1 out of 10, but on my modified scale that takes into account a lifetime of shitty cuts it gets a 5. About 70 or 80 years ago, as the story goes, when my great-grandfather was a young man he got syphlis from some broad he was banging on the side. Rather than fess up to the truth he claimed he contracted it from a barber's chair. As a result, people stopped going to this barber and he went out of business. The vengeful barber put a curse on our family so that none of the men can ever get a good haircut. True story. read more

This was a really disappointing experience. The space is cool the people were nice but the only reason they are there is to cut hair. My haircut was so uneven and bad I had to go to another barber to have my head and face fixed. The other barber was appalled that I paid to have my hair left so uneven and sloppy. During the cut I had to keep pointing out areas that didn't look proper. Each time the one spot was repaired in a rush, I was asked "Ok how about now?". I don't know about now. You're the barber you can see my head from every angle. I'm trusting you. It got to the point where I reminded the barber that I'll tip him and to please take his time. He didn't. I'm really upset that I had to get two haircuts in one day. I don't recommend this place at all. And will be calling my CC company to see if I can have the charges reversed. read more

This review is totally for the customer service at Rudy's which was truly, truly terrible. Went in tonight on a Sunday evening around 5. My boyfriend and friend were both getting haircuts and I thought it might be nice to get a quick shampoo and conditioning treatment on my long hair while they were being served. WRONG. I asked the girl at the front desk what the shampoo included and if my hair would be combed out after the conditioning treatment. She said she didn't understand. I explained further and she called a petite brunette stylist over to double check. Now here is where things get nasty. This woman gave me THE DIRTIEST most evil and nasty look I've ever gotten, said simply, "Yeah. " and then gave me the fakest, meanest, bitchiest smile I've ever seen, PERIOD. The girl at the counter then asked if I wanted a shampoo. I said, "uhmm, I would but she really looked like she didn't wanna do it so I think ill pass." I would have gotten a style and blowout but that attitude was just out of control. I don't want anyone like that sitting next to me at a restaurant, let alone touching my awesome hair. Jim is my main squeeze here. I met him over at the Rudy's on Melrose and Crescent Heights. Lucky for me, he moved to the Silver Lake location right about the same time I set up camp in the neighborhood. So it is with that good bit of kismet that I still keep appointments with him on the regular. The man can wield a set of shears, that's for sure. He gave me an awesome short cut about six months ago and every time I go back, he adds in a new little twist, like variations on a theme. He's also something of a mind reader, 'cause I will oftentimes come in without really knowing what I want. Or, like today, I'm come in and say, "I need a hair cut that will go over well with the Mid-Western crowd, or one that won't." And despite my stagnant vocabulary, he takes my verbal constipation and turns it into a beautiful hair cut. So if you're looking for a hairdresser you can trust, book some time with Jim. Or on second though, don't. I don't want him getting too busy, so just hands off, bitches. read more
