Ferndale Foods has been here forever! I shop here often times to pickup a few specific items plus items from their deli. I am surprised that I had never posted a review. My photos show this brick and mortar of Ferndale Foods in different seasons to prove it! This grocery store is packed with fresh fruit and vegetables on the far left to dairy and juices on the far right. They offer a full butcher service in the back of the store plus packaged meats. They also have a hot and cold deli service on the right. The store is always clean and aisles are box free for easy accessibility. At the entrance, there are both cashier- manned and self-checkout lines. Customer service is available for bill payments too. This area also includes a shadow location as the Lincoln Rx Pharmacy. Note: Their lottery area is a cash only purchase and they close at 8pm daily and 7pm on Sunday. read more

I've gone there 3 times and bought chicken thighs, but when I get home and open the package, they're clearly chicken backs, not thighs. Seems they're intentionally doing this, because they're packaging them in a way that they appear to be thighs. Also, it was on 3 separate occasions, so not a mistake. read more

They have Ferndale in their name to make you think they're A local market, but they do not carry a single local product. I have personally witnessed mold on a cold pasta dish at the deli (more than once), bought meat that was already expired, bought yogurt that was past the expiration date. There are some kind folks working there, at least, but in general, this place is full of shit. read more

Nice location. I love that they take nearly any can or bottle for recycling credit from other stores due to their variety of beer and pop sold. Some of the staff seem a bit indifferent at times, but I can buy a few things there. read more

This is the closest and cheapest grocery store by my friend's house in FDale. He has dragged me here a couple of times to pick up some party liquor and sodas mostly. I will say we don't generally come here their main grocery items, not for produce or meat either. We usually go to the the W store more east on 9 mile instead. This place is like a smaller value market to me. It has the basics of what you might need, nothing as far as special goes. They leave pallets out for people to trip and fall. Their staff WIILL watch you fall too. They will deny ANY AND ALL accountability. This says everything about the ambiance and the food. STEER CLEAR. An ORGANIZED boycott MAY follow, this is what they think of their customers. read more

Terrible customer service. I bought cut fruit and after 3days in the fridge, when I went to eat it, it was sour. I took it back to the store a couple of days later and was treated so rudely and they refused to give me my money or a store credit. The cup of fruit was only $5 I will not shop there again! read more

I just like this market... I've been going there for over 30 plus years. Just relationship and food quality is what matters most.

This grocery store has been here since I was a kid, and hasn't changed much since then. They have a huge parking lot that's connected to a strip, where a few other businesses are located. It's like your average "Food Land" with name brand and off brand items, for a little bit more than super markets would charge. It's basically the only grocery store that's (technically) in Ferndale, so that's probably why it's been around for so long, since everything around it has changed so much. I stopped in here for some random item(s) not too long ago but while I was here, I noticed they have a ton, no like really a crazy amount of Bob's Red Mill products! From the top to the very bottom, each shelve held about 12 bags, and I couldn't believe the variety they offered. I bet it was every kind that Bob makes. I love to cook, so a lot of time I'm searching Kroger and other markets for some of these items, when all I had to do was come to Ferndale Foods! They offer items such as granola, cornmeal, pie crust, TVP, nutritional yeast, and gluten free products too such as cookies, cakes, pizza crust and cornbread mixes! I'm going to have to really look around next time to see what else I can find :) read more

The price I paid for banquet basics meals during a sale claiming that it was 5 for $5 was not 5 for $5. They charged me way more than $5. This is not the first time they have overcharged me. Last time they overcharged me the bottle deposit for a 8 pack 16oz bottles of Pepsi. They charged me then $1.20 when it should have been only 80¢. This place has been constantly under construction for 8 years, and always overcharging it's customers. Makes you wonder where they're getting the money for all of it. My guess is that's the reason why they overcharge you. read more

Visited the store on Nov 6th and the deli counter area was filthy. Personal food items left out on counter, walls with dried food and dried liquids on them, and in serious need of a wipedown. I snapped pics with intention of filing a complaint with Oakland County Health Dept. I am not sure if that will accomplish anything but the deli area should NOT be selling food with the poor conditions of the counters and walls. read more

I have been shopping at Ferndale Foods since November of last year. The staff is always friendly, and the owner, as well. My only complaint is that a patron in their store was not wearing a mask today (although signs are everywhere). He coughed without covering his mouth in front of me in line...not cool. I looked to the staff to address him but they all knew him by name so I was hesitant to say anything. He was clearly a regular, and he was not reprimanded at the checkout counter. I understand we all have different health issues (myself included) but if a mask is mandated by law it should be enforced. Next time I will say something regardless of how uncomfortable I feel in the moment. We should all be following the law to keep the employees of Ferndale Foods safe as well as ourselves. read more

Nice clean store, convenient location, comparable prices to other Spartan stores. I've never had a issue when visiting this store. The satff has always been friendly. I've found great deals all the time. Good place to find your import beers. Pretty cool selection! They also have a pretty good deli. Hot and cold and specialty items available. With a dozen grocery stores in the area, I always question my own judgement when I step foot in this one. Subpar selection and higher prices than both Kroger and Meijer, the other big box outfits in town. Today's gem was Halloween and Christmas candy at the register, full price in April. Our go to when we need something quick! They have the usual grocery store items you would look for elsewhere. Is it fancy? No. Is it Western Market? No. But it does what its supposed to do! Beware. Owners are rude. Give you a hard time if you try to return anything. Poor customer service and workers always have a bad attitude. Prices are 20-30% higher than other stores in area. Meat coolers seem rickety and am cautious buying meat products there. Deli is always sparse and many items look old and stale. I think the person who gave Ferndale Foods three stars must be a relative of the owner... this place sucks. Look, I'm always skeptical about shmancy-arse Yelpers complaining about "cleanliness" - it's usually a coded word meant to hide all sorts of fears and paranoias of the fancy-pants commenter him- or herself... HOWEVER, one time in Ferndale Foods, I observed two employees tasked with the job of spraying down the cereal aisle with Fabreeze... WTF?! WHY would they be doing that?!!? and I was about to pick up some Corn Flakes... no effin way... The produce sucks. Don't buy it. There's a half dozen other places to get produce on 9 mile, let alone Metro Detroit Area. Also, I went to pick up a 12 pack of beer there once, in addition to a few other basic necessities, and they ID'd me. OK, I have a baby-face so I never get grouchy about that. So i whip out my driver's license which shows that i'm 29!!! 29!!! The cashier was staring at it for a little bit, just long enough for the manager to walk over and take a look himself, then he asks me for a passport? WHY the FUGG would I bring my passport to Ferndale Foods?!?! He insisted to see another ID which I didn't have, so no beer for me. I left my other things on the register and walked across the street to Western Market. This place blows. It deserves the ONE star because they have all your paper/bathroom/cleaning needs in one place for a decent price, but to be honest, Sav-A-Lot next door has SOME of the same products for even less, and other days I'd rather just spend the extra 25 cents per item just to avoid Ferndale Foods. My friend tina told me "please don't go there. its ghetto and disgusting and way too expensive for craptastic shit!" well she was right. i had to go there because i needed a loaf of bread to eat with some hummus i just made. all i wanted was a nice crusty bread. anything would have done. the first loaf i picked up had something bluish-green. i immediately left. all the employees seem disgruntled too. the parking lot sucks balls. i went across the street to western market and purchased my bread from there. that is a testament, since i think that place is terribly overpriced and just not worth shopping at. love, juston read more

Call me spoiled for grocery stores in the past; I have lived in a blessed triangle with the upscale Aldi's and a brand new Meijer anchoring one end, a selection of devoted supermarkets [Dominick's/Safeway, Jewel] and combo ones [Super Walmart, Super Target], and then specialty shops like Whole Foods hanging around. All were within reasonable driving distance of 3 to 5 miles, with their only lack being a consistently excellent butcher or bakery. Now, I know the D and its suburbs have challenges with clumping all these food-providing cornucopias in one strip or spot. On the other hand, the city and burbs possess plenty of specialty places and I am starting to appreciate the European style of shopping at a greengrocers for produce, ethnic shops for respective ingredients, a bakery (oh a bakery! The world for a flaky pastry...), and so forth on a daily basis to make fresh meals. Let's not forget how awesome Eastern Market is too. Now, while wandering away from this thought, I went to review the local grocery stores around my home base in Ferndale. First up, Ferndale Foods. For a Spartan store, this is an overpriced embarrassment. $4.49 for a package of garlic bread that similarly sells at Meijer, Kroger, Target, and other major supermarkets for $2.19 - $3.59? Who are you kidding, Ferndale Foods? I don't see "organic!" and "Michigan only!" slapped all over your pristine aisles, and a cachet that calls to the Bloomfield crew to visit here. Don't mistake me, Ferndale/Royal Oak/Huntington Woods definitely counts as a fine section of society, but the mark-up here makes no sense. So many of their frozen staples were double the price I expected to pay based on a bit of price shopping that I hastened to look only at Spartan brand goods. There's not much price savings there without a serious sale, in which case I suppose I stock up. There's something about this store which strikes me wrong, even after the apparent renovation, and I haven't decided exactly what that is. Finding rotten or stone-hard produce did not make me terribly happy and I have given up on the deli and their dairy cases after seeing the prices and condition of the food. For canned goods, non-perishable staples, and snagging a jar of salsa or a Faygo (yum! Hello Faygo!) then it might not be too bad but there is no way in heck I'm going to do my local grocery shopping here. I'll drive the extra miles to Meijer off Coolidge and get all those basics, and leave the daily stuff for Western Market and elsewhere. Employees at Ferndale Foods are mostly the high-school/college-set and they seem fairly unhappy or ready to be gone, no surprise there. However, I smack a star off for the manager hiding in his glassed-in lair near the entrance who came after me for my... tiny hobo purse. He assumed something shorter in length than my forearm and half that tall was a backpack (maybe it was the colourful pattern?) and violated their no backpack policy. When I quietly told the apologetic teenager who came to take it from me that, no, it was a purse and held only my wallet, phone, and some essentials, he went back to his manager. Manager then told him to collect it. I don't mind the policy but I think it was way over the top, and worse, it keeps people from bringing in bike bags, recyclable or cloth bags, and the like because it's so zealously enforced. When the manager wouldn't back down, I walked out. I like supporting local and state-owned businesses. Spartan stores are something I want to like, and others I think are much better than the experience I have here. read more

Disgusting! I recently moved to the area and I have been traveling all the way to the Meijer at 13 and John R just because I didn't know what else existed closer. Well, this place will not be my regular go-to place. It seemed like they might have some good deals, but I would not buy produce or meat or anything else "fresh" from here. Lots of things looked questionable. And the employees were flat out rude. You could tell that they hate every minute of their job, and the only moments of happiness they have is being nasty to customers. The owner (I'm assuming) sits in a plexi-glass box which houses cigarettes, lotto and a TV with a live feed of surveilance. He had a chair pulled up in front of the TV and was watching customers shop. Really, is that necessary? I might stop here occasionally when I'm in a bind and need cat litter or toilet paper. But that's about it. The store was dirty and I don't feel comfortable giving them my money. There is a Sav a lot down the street, and that might be a better option for paper products and the such. As for meat and produce, I know it's pricey, but Western Market is right down the street. read more

Ugh. This place is right down my own street and I still refuse to shop here. Every weekend the parking lot is packed. Why?! There are much better grocery options in the area (one is even right across 9 Mile-albeit more expensive, but you get what you pay for!) The parking lot sucks-tons of potholes and you risk getting sideswiped by the dumbasses who are flying through the parking lot to cut through to CVS. The store itself carries lousy produce. It's bad. And everything inside is WAY overpriced and most likely expired. EVERYTHING I ever bought here went bad within a few days of buying it. The employees and the other patrons creep me out. I know it's mean. I know. I'm usually the type of person that likes everrrryone. It seems like the few times I went in here, I'd almost get into fighting matches with aisle blockers giving dirty looks or with the snotty, weird employees. Final word: Don't shop here unless you have good auto insurance and are prepared to CAREFULLY inspect every item you buy. read more

Everyone needs to take this place for what it is: an incredibly average local grocery store. They have all the staples, a good beer selection, a surprising bacon selection, helpful workers--and most importantly--it's just a few blocks from your house. No one is going out of their way to go here; you're going here because it's ON your way. Nothing wrong with that. I generally avoid the produce, and check the expiration date on anything that has one before you buy it. Prices aren't great, but could be much, much worse (like Western Market across the street...which I'd also rate a 4/5 for it's own merit). read more

When will I learn? I shop at this store because I'm lazy and it's the easiest to access from my home and park in the lot, but every time I have to buy something "fresh" it's either spoiled or damn near on it's way. I come here in "oh-crap-turn-the-stove-off-and-run-to-the-store" emergencies because it's convenient, but that's truly all it has going for it. The entry always smells like dirty bottles, the produce department is always a cloud of fruit flies, there are always crates waiting to be stocked blocking the shelves and I swear, I always smell a rotten-meat smell in the back, but I can't identify the source. EVERY TIME I get milk or cream from this joint, it's already spoiled or has done so in the next day. Sick. When is management going to get out from their bulletproof cage (Ferndale is NOT the ghetto!) and actually take care of some of this shit? I hate this place because I feel it has gone straight downhill since it was sold to the present owners. All the product brands changed. Some nicer items I'd become accustomed to buying there were no longer available. Produce that was formerly loose was all the sudden prepacked in plastic wrap on a little foam plate. Oh joy. Flourescent "2fer" and "5fer" signs all over the store attempt to create the pretense of a sale item if you buy more than one. But what is lacks in warmth, it makes up for in parasitic ghetto "service" offerings like bill payment and western union. If you buy 5 things don't be surprised if your dead-eyed bagger puts them in 3-4 individual plastic bags. I'll drive 6 miles to Meijer's before I'll go to this place ever again. I used to live right by this place and despite not being the cleanest place, it was my go-to for most regular day-to-day items because it was the cheapest. I noticed even things like Garden Fresh Salsa and chips were cheaper than Western Market across the street. But the best part of this place (for me, anyways) was the beer selection. Despite its humble appearance, it has one of the best beer selections in the area, without the pretense. If you live in the area, this should be your market for the beer, soft drinks, standard frozen foods, dry foods, dressings and sauces. read more

You know how in feed-the-hungry commercials the people always have this lost, hollow, glazed over look of desperation in their face that makes you want to just console them? I'm thinking they could start filming at Ferndale foods instead of hoping around the world. Ironic - since it is a grocery store... I don't know what it is but some of the employees here look like they have lost all hope and in the process don't even bother looking up at you during the checkout process, much less give a smile. Perhaps that is because there is often a manager lurking with his own macabre expression. It is kind of a downer. Morose staff aside this place is well, a supermarket. They have decent prices and sales ( 99 cent spices, heyyy-yooo!). I tend to shop here for dry items, the types of things you keep in your cupboard just in case, and go elsewhere for produce and meat. Though from what I have seen of the produce it is nothing to lurch away from. I know many of the people in my building shop here and have no complaints; I'm just a bit more finicky and conscientious of where I get ingredients for my meals. If the employees don't mutiny then I think this is an okay place to go if you are in a bind or if you don't want to grocery hop to get everything you need in the best quality possible. read more

Now that the remodel is complete, I really really enjoy going to Ferndale Foods. They have absolutely the best selection of wine and beer anywhere in town - from super cheap to really fancy. The wine section covers an entire aisle, both sides, from one end of the store to the other, plus you can always find more on endcaps! And along with the remodel they built a "beer cave" so you can walk in and find lots and lots of nice cold cases. They also have any snack you could ever want to wash down with your beer and wine. Plus, near the deli, they have one of those self-serve hot food warmers that has rotisserie chickens, turkey meatloaf, chicken strips, and sometimes even spaghetti with meat sauce. It is not gourmet food, don't get me wrong, but it is actually quite tasty! The produce is still not world-class but is definitely getting better. It's better than the crappy produce section in the Hazel Park Kroger for sure. It's still not my go-to place for major grocery-shopping trips, but we do go there at least 2-3 times a week now to pick up a little something we forgot, ran out of, are craving, or just sounds good with an adult beverage. It's much MUCH cleaner than before and the cashiers are even friendly and upbeat, a very pleasant shopping experience. read more
