This used to be our favorite Ethiopian spot until our most recent take out experience…read more We called to order two vegetarian combos at 5:30 and were told told to come in pick up at 5:45. When we get there at 5:45, we notice that the food is packed up in a medium (9"x13") sized aluminum pan with lid. In the past we'd gotten our meals in two styrofoam take out boxes with plenty of food so I was initially excited to see the new packaging because I believed the quantity would be the same or more. We get home 5 mins later and were sorely disappointed by our order. There were plenty of lentils but the orange ones were undercooked and lacked flavor. There were only about two bites of the collard greens/Gomen wat. And usually Mama África supplies more potatoes spears with their carrot and cabbage side, this time, we also only got two bites of the cabbage, no potatoes. Not to mention, the green beans were definitely canned and had no additional flavor to them. We asked for a side of chickpea soup/shiro wat and were disappointed to find that it too lacked flavor and was mostly oil. The worst part in addition to all the above was that the food was cold and the injera tasted stale and lacked its usual sourness. To add insult to injury, the meal was nearly 70 dollars in total for something that barely fed one person. This was the first time I ever wanted to ask for a refund for our food because we barely received one portion of the veggie combo, not the two we paid for. I hate to leave a one star review for a small business but the quality and quantity of food went down drastically.

Everything was good. There were some veggies that we didn't really love but still good. The food took a while to come out. We waited about 40 mins but understood that they seems to be family owned business so they don't have too many people working. There are plenty of parking. Overall it was not bad and good flavor! Will be back to try other dishes here.

We went on a Saturday at 2:30pm and had no problems. Food came out very quickly. FOOD: Super yummy! My BF and I had never had Sudanese food before. The description on the menu sounded good. We asked the chef/owner what he suggests and he directed us towards the ful. This is puréed beans with lots of dynamic spices. Since I'm such a wimp and can't handle at all, he made my ful at a 0 for spicy - but the flavor sure wasn't 0! My BF also got ful but asked for medium spicy level and it was great. - FUL: puréed beans with lots of spices. Comes with some chopped onions, peppers, tomatoes and feta cheese I think on top kind of as a garnish. BF got it without feta and really liked it. Scooped it up both loads of bread. The ful is very rich on its own. Eating it by scooping it with bread dilutes the flavor, as bread does. So I suggest going back and forth between eating with a spoon and eating with bread. - HALF AND HALF: half ful and half eggs. The egg were scrambled with some diced red onions that gave it a nice crunch. And there may have been a few tomatoes scrambled in. The mix-ins were not over powering at all. I think he said there are green chilis in the eggs, but I didn't notice any and it wasn't spicy. But it was spiced very well! DRINKS: we didn't order any, but I saw cans of sprite and Pepsi and they have an intense coffee/espresso machine. AMBIANCE: it's a bit sparse when it comes to the tables and decor, but they do have a high chair so it seems family friendly. PARKING: plenty in the parking lot right in front, but I didn't notice any handicapped parking. SERVICE: nice chef/owner. The place is been there since 2009 but he took over in 2018. We ordered to-go and it was ready pretty darn quick. ACCESSIBILITY: I didn't notice any handicapped parking, but there is so much parking in those strip mall. There are a few potholes in the parking lot though...No stairs to enter, but I don't recall seeing a ramp from the parking lot to the sidewalk in front of any businesses. BATHROOMS: I forgot to check. OVERALL: tasty, not too expensive, and looking forward to trying their coffee some time!

As you may know, the proprietor himself is from Liberia, which has strong historical and cultural ties to the United States, especially from a culinary standpoint. For example, in states like North and South Carolina, sesame or "benne" seeds are used particularly by Gullah and Geechee communities (in dishes both sweet and savory) - and these same seeds are used as a paste to accompany some of the satisfying stews on offer at the restaurant. Okra pods are another ingredient from Africa which are now thought of as quintessentially American - and Home Style Foods's earthy okra soup will give you a little more insight into that particular cross-cultural connection. And, on a sweeter note, the rice-flour donuts known as Calas started out in Liberia and Sierra Leone before becoming the pride of New Orleans by the mid-1800s. And you can sample these ample (and believe me, they're big) delights at HSF also. But these are just a few temptations hiding behind that door at the intersection of Mississippi and Peoria. This brings me to one of Liberia's more (in)famous regional dishes - namely, Torgborgee from Lofa County in the far north of the country. Yes, it is definitely full of strong flavors - aged palm oil, country soda (or as we know it better over here, potash) and two different kinds of eggplant (the white ones called "garden eggs" and the small green ones referred to as Kittily) all take center stage in this sumptuous stew. But just try it! You'll see that everything melds together splendidly. (I should mention that the restaurant's preparations tend to be made with mixed meats - in fact, beef, chicken and fish might all appear in a single recipe). Depending on the day you visit, you might even get to enjoy "check rice" (rice cooked together with jute leaves - yep, *that's* where the green color comes from) as an accompaniment to your meal. But I've only hinted at a few potential choices, so see what else you can partake of - and don't forget to do a little shopping next door at the grocery before or after you eat.

The standout dish was the lamb couscous: perfectly tender, slow-cooked lamb that practically melts in your mouth, layered over fluffy, fragrant couscous. The vegetables absorbed the rich spiced broth without losing their texture. Also very generous portions. If you're looking for a cozy, authentic meal that feels like it came straight from a Moroccan home kitchen, this is it. 10/10 would recommend!

The babaganush, harrira (soup), and bastille were pretty good, and I would come back and get them aging. The falafel was over fried and dry. The combo platter rice was good, but meat was bland. And I'm so sad the dessert baklava was not that great. Smuttered in chocolate, the nuts and honey classic flavor could not be tasted. They have a few other dishes in curious to come back to try. But... service! Well. Waitress was very friendly, definitely good vibes. But after 1st water, never refilled glasses; and plates stacked up. I had to ask (more than once) to clear then to make space for next one. And restaurant was not busy. So service-wise, but great. Food, since really good, some just meh. I'm 50/50 on coming back.
