My dad said it's the best Ethiopian food he's had (and he's - a big aficionado of the cuisine)! Everything (cooking, hosting, serving) is done by one woman and she dishes out some fun banter too. I was the only person in the restaurant and I got a chance to read the many articles on the restaurant and the history of Ms. Aboie. Queen of Sheba is in a strip mall with not many tables. But we walked in on a Friday and didn't wait at all. Still, a fairly steady busy crowd. Keep that in mind as you wait for your food as this is a small operation and the food is clearly made with attention and love. We started with the Fo-ol medemas, had some honey wine, and the queens dinner for 2. The Fo-ol was a great starter, as the veggies and feta was fresh and lovely. Honey wine wasn't overly sweet which is exactly how we liked it. It was made with unique spices and was light and refreshing. Lastly, the dinner course. We loved every component as each was made so juicy and flavorful. The only sad part for us is that this place isn't closer to where we live, otherwise we'd be here weekly. I was so excited to try this place. I drove 30 minutes and once I got there and ordered, I was met was the rudest worker I have ever encountered. Extremely condescending and sarcastic. I asked for bread to be on the side because I am gluten free. My boyfriend however is NOT. She refused me service and asked me.... A grown woman... how does she know I won't eat the gluten? Some of the best Ethiopian food I've had in Denver! This is a small, unassuming restaurant in strip mall. There is off street parking in the lot in front. And, they are just a block away from Fiction Brewery, a great spot for a post-dinner beer. The restaurant itself is small, only a handful of tables. When we stopped in on a Sunday evening, there was no wait and we were seated right away. They have a great selection of traditional and vegetarian dishes and several sampler type options. There is literally something for everyone. The injera is wonderfully tart and spongy. The injera at the bottom, soaking up the beef stew juices is the best! Queen of Sheba is a little hole-in-the-wall restaurant that, if you blink, you can easily miss it. I know, because our Uber driver blew past it when he came to pick us up at the end of our evening. But looks can be deceiving -- the quality of the food far exceeded any Ethiopian food I've had before in other cities; Seattle, Omaha and NYC included. Other reviewers have referred to the owner/chef -- she is HILARIOUS. Very subtle, dry humor. Absolutely charming. AND the only person who works there. She cooks all the food herself, which was the place is small. And while others have commented on the wait, I honestly don't recall thinking, "Wow, this is taking a long time." The injera was a different consistency than I've had elsewhere; much lighter. I had the vegetarian plate, which I uploaded a photo of, and the yellow lentils were the sweetest, most delicious I've ever had. We stumbled on this place, and next time I'm in Denver, I plan to seek it out intentionally. I picked this place for my first Ethiopian food experience, and it did not disappoint. I was expecting to wait a while for service and food because of the reviews, but it was not slow at all. The restaurant itself is small, and it was pretty packed when I got there on a Sunday evening. But, the waiter was very attentive and quick with our orders and water refills. There were three of us, and we got the Sam Bussa as an appetizer and the Platter for Two to share. First, the Sam Bussa was awesome! It was filled with lentils, but it tasted much more savory than I could have ever expected lentils to taste -- my friend even thought it was meat at first. Think a savory empanada. The Platter "for Two" was amazing (I was apparently too ambitious in thinking we could have easily finished it among the three of us). The food was so flavorful and perfectly spicy, wow. Even the injera bread that you wrap the meat in complemented everything in a way that didn't make it lose its own unique flavor. The dough was cooked to perfection. The filling was savory, spicy, and soft, a perfect pairing to the hot crispy dough. We then shared the vegetarian dinner for 2, which absolutely blew our mind. Another amazing day in Colorado with my girls. Ended on a humbling note eating at a local Ethiopian restaurant, which happened to be the best meal of the trip. The owner left Ethiopia in the 70s and landed in Denver in the 90s where she single handedly runs her restaurant. She's the chef, server, cleans tables and takes payment with absolutely no help. She was the kindest soul. Photos of the younger her were posted and she was absolutely gorgeous, and still just as lovely. If you're ever in Denver check out Queen of Sheba, reservations required. The portion is huge and the cook will give you as much injera as you can possibly want. The service is informal and almost family-like. Incredible! Found this gem today and I have nothing but great things to say about it! Food was incredible and very inexpensive. The owner made it when we ordered and we could smell the amazing cooking aromas. The food was so flavorful and we loved the authentic style of eating by hand. The three of us shared a mix of a beef, lamb, and chickpea entree and they were all amazing. The chickpea was particularly incredible. The owner was so lovely. Personally, I would just stick with the veggie options. They are amazing---everything from the multicolored lentils to the potatoes to the tangy greens we had on our last platter. As an appetizer, we tried the anababero, crispy SPICY injera. I enjoyed it but it packs a punch. More injera was delivered just when we needed it and our waiter (the grandson of the proprietress) was friendly and prompt. So I have been to a total of 4 Ethiopian restaurants in Colorado and there is simply NO comparison between Queen of Sheba and any of the others. The food here is consistently AMAZING - she doesn't just use fresh, quality ingredients, but she also prepares the food superbly, which means you might wait a bit for your food, but it will be WELL worth the wait - and I'd rather wait for amazing food than get mediocre food quickly ;) I said "she" since there is a single chef, and she is the owner of the restaurant. This is how they're able to achieve consistent amazing quality of their food, and the owner is just a wonderful, fun person I look forward to seeing every time I go! As for what food to get, well, I really don't think you can go wrong. I love the chicken (especially the dark meat, which is far more flavorful) since the meat just falls off the bone it's so tender. People who know me are very much aware of my love for Ethiopian food. In Denver, my family has a go-to resto, but on my last visit home, we decided to switch it up and try Queen of Sheba after hearing time and time again how it's the best in the city. The great thing about trying new Ethiopian restaurants is the menus are usually very similar, so we always go with the same order. For starters, we tried both the veggie and meat sambusas. While I loved the lentils that made up the veggie variety, my favorite was the meat kind, made up of slightly sweet ground beef. For our main feast, we went with the meat combo for two and the veggie combo for two. It was the perfect amount of food for the four of us and I can honestly say I loved every bite on the large plate! To sip, we enjoyed Ethiopian beer (they were out of all but St. George's) and also traditional honey wine, which was some of the best I have had. This is a very small place and there were only two people working, with the lady of the house very much in the forefront, taking orders and delivering the food. She was super friendly and although she messed up our drink order and was a bit slow in getting refills, it's admirable to witness how much care she takes in her restaurant and food. If going in with a group of four or more, definitely give her a call. A group of about 8 walked in without a heads up and while they were seated, she urged them to call next time and I could tell she was a bit miffed. My fellow Ethiopian lovers were praising our food the entire time. From the injera to the stewed meats, it was more flavorful than most joints I've tried.
