One of my favorite places in Chapel Hill, though it is actually out in rural Orange County. The location, about 10-15 minutes drive from downtown Carrboro. The establishment is small and its seating is limited. But the drive is wonderful and the relative quiet makes it on a balance a great destination. And the owner, Chuy, and his employees, are all great people who make it a very warm, welcoming place. As for the food, ummm. The portions here tend toward enormous. But that is what you would expect from lovingly prepared Mexican/Mexican-American food. Salsas and the like are prepared by hand and they are very memorable. The menu is long, but I have found a few dishes, such as the mole (either chicken or enchilada) to be real standouts. I would also recommend the various egg dishes for brunch/lunch. One thought: always be ready to get your leftovers as takeout! The food might be quite as sumptuous the next day, but it is probably a lot better than what you have at home. read more

Fiesta Grill is the most authentic Mexican restaurant in the Chapel Hill area. The place is located in an isolated area about 10 minutes outside of Carrboro on 54, but it is worth the drive. There is absolutely no ambiance here. The restaurant is nothing more than a cheap steel building with no more than 10 tables inside. It is a better option to call in your order and then pick it up to eat at home. They definitely have some good seafood options on the menu. The shrimp enchiladas are amazing and jam packed with shrimp. read more

Wow. Fiesta Grill might be the freshest, most authentic Mexican food we've ever had, and we pride ourselves on looking for the best Mexican food everywhere we go. The mole sauce is incredibly delicious. You'll even enjoy the rice and beans - and face it, you never eat the rice and beans when you go to your regular Mexican place. Incredible! The beef fajita, is absolutely mind blowing! Everything there is just great, it is a family run restaurant, and the service is very good. They are packed most days, but if they aren't, I highly recommend that you stop by, and try everything. Unlike most restaurants, there isn't a bad thing on the menu, everything is cooked with care, and they are all so nice. I also recommend that you get their orchata (rice drink) it tastes like nothing you have ever tasted, not thick, but not thin, I always drink the entire thing. I was really skeptical about this place and had been driving by it for more than 3 years. We stopped in a couple of weeks ago and I was pleasantly surprised when we got our food off the lunch menu. This place serves an extensive menu of authenic Mexican food such as enchiladas, burritos, tamales and taquitos. Their chips are thick and crunchy; the refried beans saucy and the Mexican rice fluffy and perfectly prepared. I tried the enchaladas rancheras with sour cream and quacamole and it was delicious. Pure and simple - this place rocks. The one thing that strikes me about this place, after a dozen visits, is that it is consistently excellent - food and service. The only down side to me? Their mole sauce - it's not one of my favorites. Every Mexican restaurant seems to have its own mole, and this is the case here. You can tell that they put some effort into it - it's just not to my liking, the bitter flavor components are a bit too heavy handed but overall this is a minor complaint. If you haven't been here yet, you need to fix that soon. Even though they are outside of town, there is absolutely no reason to go to Carrburritos or Armadillo Grill with a place like the Fiesta Grill down the road. On the other hand, maybe you should just go to one of those places instead, the dining room is a bit small and I wouldn't mind cutting my wait time for a table. read more

This place is fantastic--the food tastes authentic, the portions are enormous for the price, and they offer speedy takeout service. Definitely the closest to authentic home style Mexican food I've been able to find in the area. Other places seem closer to glorified tv dinner Mexican food. There's a wide range of food here. The hot version of chili relleno is great (emphasize that you really do want it spicy hot and it won't let you down), the chili verde, and the chicken adobo are all quite good. Simple, but fresh and flavorful. Service is impeccable and cheery. The chips and salsa didn't do a whole lot for me, but other people seem to adore the stuff. read more

My family and I have been going here for over 10 years. The food is fresh and authentic. The salsa and chips are both homemade. My children love this place and they are very kid friendly. The wait staff is always very busy (it's never slow here!) but yet very attentive. I highly recommend the fajita's. My husband also loves the burritos, but I dare you to way one in one sitting'. I highly recommend this place. It's worth the drive. We now live about 30 minutes away and choose the drive over our local sub par Mexican restaurants. read more

We are recent transplants from Austin and know good tex-mex and authentic mexican food. Unfortunately, Fiesta Grill is not the place to get it in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro area. The tacos al carbon were a sad chicken breast fried in a pan, I think, in very non-descript spices. No flavor at all. The kicker was when I asked for jalapenos to try and spice up the dish. They brought a small side-mini-bowl of canned Sysco jalapenos and charged us 75 cents for it. We won't be going back. read more

It's hard to find a decent Mexican diner near Hillsborough and my husband said he had only had great Mexi like this maybe once or twice in California. While there are many variations (depending of the region) of Mexican cuisine, this one blasts out of the sphere the cliché-"Margarita-ville"-North American establishments that offer the token dishes and fail to highlight the true diversity found in authentic Mexican culinary field. This place is divine, if you love good Mexican food. It's a bit out of the way on Highway 54 out of Chapel Hill, and it looks like it used to perhaps be an old store or garage or something. Ambiance is not their thing, but I don't think anyone comes here for the atmosphere. It's all about the food, which is top-notch, fresh and brought out quickly. I think the owners (?) work the cash register and wait tables, so it seems to be a real family atmosphere. One thing that I love, is that if you ask for hot sauce, you won't get a generic bottle of sauce. They'll bring you a bowl of actual homemade hot sauce. I'm a bit of a glutton for heat, so I didn't find it terribly sizzling hot, but it was good and really added something to my meal. You won't find everything smothered in a sea of cheese, and they offer legit soft tacos, more like Mexican street food. This place provided my introduction to horchata, and I've yet to find any that I like better. It gets busy for lunch and for the dinner rush, and seating is very limited. But even if you have to wait, it's totally worth it. read more

This place is outstanding. We don't get here often enough, but when we do - YUMMY! My wife gets nothing except the chicken mole enchiladas, and the mole is to die for. I could consume just that sopped up with some tortillas. Everything we've tried here has been superb. I order the menu board special often. The 'soup of the seven seas' is a fave which I order almost every other time we go. Also love the horchata. Only a recommendation - get here early as the place (which is tiny) can get packed rather quickly. And, not to forget - the staff is very attentive while being efficient & polite. I am from Southern California and this is the most authentic Mexican around. I consider this a whole in the wall because there isn't any ambiance.
