The best Mexican home cooking in the Triangle, hands down. I can't do better than the following story to give you an idea of service: I went to this restaurant with a friend who lived nearby, and after ordering we were told that their credit card machine had gone down. Not having cash, but still with an appetite, the owner told us that he would pick up the tab. We agreed to pay him the next day, and when we stopped by to pay him, there was no surprise in his eyes. BUT I started eating there semi-regularly (I lived quite close) and usually always take-out, and I must say- the food was great! I usually always ordered the beef enchiladas, and they were delicious! The sauce is super tasty, the meat was fantastic- I was a happy girl! The down-side is if you are wanting to eat there, they have very limited seating. I heard it had something to do with zoning?! No idea, but be prepared to wait if it's traditional lunch/dinner hours. By far the best Mexican I have tried in the area. When you walk inside you notice an old school menu sign above where the orders come out of and only a handful of tables. This is authentic mexican, not tex-mex! We waited about 15 minutes for table on a Sat at 1 in the afternoon. Once seated the owner (or I would presume it was) greeted us. Before we even sat down, two orders of chips and salsa. The menu is quite extensive and specials are written on a board. Not many but available. We ordered some guac which was very good. I sensed good things to come. I opted for Bravo's Burrito. I should of read what it was all about. It was massive. When I say massive picture the biggest burrito you have seen and x2. Full of pork, rice (which was excellent and not that crap you usually get), cheese and sauce. Out of this world. My gf opted for the tacos (beef/chicken). Both were great. The other guests food was great as well. The prices were excellent. You get so much food, good service and cheap prices. $80 for 4 people having 3 beers each, splitting apps and a huge main course. This is definitely the best Mexican restaurant in Chapel Hill, unfortunately it's not in the most mainstream location, instead it's a few miles outside of town. On weekends they have a ceviche for only $3 which is really good. I also got the Carne Milanesa (butter-fried steak) and it was very good. I found it pretty comparable to what you'd get in major cities and it was only about $10. I strongly recommend this spot if you want to take a short 15 minute trip to get some cheap and good Mexican. read more

Can I say Ranchera enchilada, beef flauta, and mo Milanesa please?! I despaired at first, knowing I'd leave La Vaquita and KoKyYu when I left Durham. BUT, I found a diamond in the rough in Fiesta Grille. Four visits in and I have never wanted Mexican food as regularly as I do now. As others noted the salsa and mole are delish. They also don't douse my enchilada or burrito with way too much lettuce, and when I have to ask for guacamole to be added elsewhere these folks place a generous dollop that lasts more than 2 bites, finally, as an included garnishment with my meal! My last visit I ordered out, multiple a la carte items that did not dissapoint. I would like them to give the option of no mole or cheese on top of their tamal, because it was tasty and moist enough under all that and I like to taste the corn and pork without anything in the way. Also, my bag of goodies didn't come with chips this time, so I guess I have to order combo meals on the first 3 menu pages to get my "free" chips. Lil unexpected. Their staff and owner are excellent servicefolk though, and if I'd noticed the tamal sauced or the lack of chips at checkout I'm sure they would've helped me with it. This restaurant is typically great in so many aspects, but recently I have noticed that the meat quality has been very disappointing, and I also got a very bad stomach illness following a recent meal here. I can not pin point if it was the fault of the restaurant for sure, but I was very suspicious, as some of the food did seem off that day... I want this business to stay at their best and to succeed. This is my second trip to Fiesta Grill. I am not going to pretend to be an expert on authentic Mexican food, but the dishes were delicious on both visits. This restaurant is worthy of praise. The first time I came here, I am ashamed to say that I got the painfully Tex Mex-y fajita plate. A sizzling plate of onions, green peppers, and chicken, with generous sides of beans, pico de gallo, and tomato flavored rice, for $12. Totally worthwhile. On my next visit, I got the carnitas, a few chunks of tender, lightly spiced pork with the typical fixings of beans, rice, pico de gallo, and tortilla, I think ~$13. That pork just melted in my mouth, it was so soft and juicy. Things I love about this place: 1. Friendly wait-staff. The waitresses here are all so sweet. 2. This is going to sound weird - but I LOVE seeing Hispanic patrons here. I love knowing that this place is passable to those with a more discerning eye than myself. 3. The cleanliness. I don't mind my dingy, hole in the wall shacks, but I am impressed by their ability to keep such a busy restaurant spotless. They proudly display their 96 rating on cleanliness within eyesight and it's well deserved! 4. The chips and salsa they routinely bring out for appetizers. The salsa is slightly spicy and always so fresh. I love it. 5. Simple, accomplishes the job, and cheap. What more could you want? If this is the best Mexican food in Chapel Hill/Carrboro, then that's not saying much for the availability of good Mexican food in the area. I'm so confused as to why people love this place so much. The first time I visited was probably 6 years ago, and it was fine. Now I live very close and have gone probably 6 times in the past year. I just don't get it. If it were cheap, maybe it would make sense. Or if it didn't get all the rave reviews...I'd be okay with it. But EVERYONE recommends it, and it's quite expensive for what you get. Yes, the burritos are big. But they lack any flavor. They might as well be packed with a can of refried beans (which for the most part they are, that's how they make them so big). The cheese they use is only comparable to the "Mexican" shredded cheese from Food Lion. Like, that's just what it is. The tortas taste stale...honestly like something I could throw together in my own kitchen having no knowledge of Mexican food. Their chicken lacks flavor. Again, it's totally edible, but it's really nothing to rave about. Please everyone go to Carniceria el Mercadito in Greensboro, and then tell me what "good" "Mexican" food tastes like. Most definitely one of my favorite restaurants to venture to. This is some of the best mexican food I've had, and it's so pure and delicious. All of the food is amazingly cheap and comes in amazingly large amounts. I recommend Fajitas, Chimis, Burritos, and last but not least the most amazing Nachos I've ever had. The shredded beef goes so well in all of their burritos and nachos, it's just great. One thing I do recommend that you go during off hours so you don't have to wait. Don't eat that day, and just pig out around 3 when no one is there. They always make it fresh, so don't worry about that. It's a little off the beaten track, but well worth the drive.I had the authentically prepared carnitas, and they were great. My wife had the enchiladas with mole'- fabulous sauce. Cheap, not many tables, friendly, large burritos. If you order a burrito, the meal does not come with rice or beans. But the burrito is large enough along with the chips & salsa. The chips did not have much salt on them which is nice considering some places with give you more salt than chip. The salsa lacked a kick and it was a bit watery. The bad news is that, even with its relatively way-out location, seating will come at a premium. Since Orange County has, for whatever reason, has declared that they can only have 13 seats; you can bet that you'll be waiting for a while. That's the entirety of the bad news. All of it. Everything else is good news. The menu is huge, and comes more authentic than the typical Mexican stop (the kind that comes way more authentic than Taco Bell, but still well short of the real deal) and goes past the limitations of Durham's many ridiculous-good taquerias. The result is that you can grab some chorizo tacos or get a little crazy and grab the Fiesta Camarones (shrimp wrapped in bacon, kids...lights out good). Does your friend hate new and delicious things? There's a whole "For the Americanos" section that features boring items like a Fiesta Cheeseburger. Still, because of the seating situation and the fact that it gets super crowded around the lunching hour, I recommend enjoying your Fiesta Grill experience during off-hours or via their take-out service. There's nothing more uncomfortable than enjoying your chimichanga while the poor sap who just got there and knows he'll have to wait for 30 minutes to an hour stares longingly. read more

Fiesta Grill has a unique atmosphere. It reminds me of a little roadside restaurant that you'd find in Mexico or another Latin American country. The staff is friendly and the decor is sparse (folding chairs, plain walls with a little red or green trim around the doorframes), but the place is spotlessly clean. There are two dining rooms, each with about five tables. Two of us arrived around 7:15pm on a Thursday and had about a 15-minute wait to be seated. You can either dine in or take out, and the menu above the takeout counter is of the old school letters-stuck-in-the-board variety. Very cute! The menu is huge and the quality of the food certainly explained our wait. I had enchiladas rancheras off the a la carte menu... a very wise choice. I got tons of food for a much cheaper price. By forgoing the rice and beans that came with the entree version, I paid $6.00 instead of $9.75 and was absolutely stuffed. Their salsa and the ranchera sauce were delicious, but I was a little bit underwhelmed by the guacamole. Very fresh and not bad, but I've definitely had better. I am a frequent visitor to Fiesta Grill, probably 3 times a month. It is a nice family business, serving very good food at reasonable prices. My favorite meal is the chicken enchilada with mole sauce. Quality is quite consistent. The people who work there are very friendly and capable. I do not want to oversell FG. It is not a fancy upscale experience with dazzling Mexican cuisine. I have not found that in the Durham/CH area, although Dos Perros comes closest (DP is another fave of mine). They serve beer at FG, but no liquor. The restaurant is clean, but decor is certainly not fancy. Those caveats not withstanding, I recommend Fiesta Grill to anyone who is happy with a tasty, traditional Mexican meal. They have never disappointed me. read more

I was on my way to work on a film project and driving down this long stretch of beautiful road in Chapel Hill, NC. Had never driven in NC before and had low expectations for a Mexican spot on the highway. I assumed it was probably for truck drivers or something but walked in and saw families and all kinds of folks. Yes, there were men in work clothes driving up in their white pick up trucks too but......After having a great small talk with the owner and reviewing the menu I knew the food would be good. The fish tacos had grilled fish not that frozen breaded deep fried garbage many places put in tacos. They also included a nice slice of avocado in the taco. It was served with fresh pico de gallo. Can you say delicious!?! I got a double order of beans without cheese (since I don't eat white rice), tortilla chips and salsa to take with me on the long ride back home later. I asked for them to top it with a little red sauce and my, my, my! Who knew? Good Mexican food on the side of the road in North Carolina? This California girl was impressed. *insert applause* Yes, of course it was an American-ish menu. We are in the US but it was good. The staff is working hard but the vibes are positive and warm. We visit Fiesta Grill in a regular bases. Best Mexican food in Chapel Hill bar none. It's very authentic and reasonably priced. Service is quick even though is always crowded. We order take out for most trips because we are always multiplexing. Staff is friendly and restaurant is conveniently located. Love that the menu is in both Spanish and English. WOW what a burrito! We stopped by this place on the recommendation of some friends who live nearby. The waitlist was seven or eight names deep on this Saturday night, so given that there are only seven or eight tables in the place, we went with the takeout option. We ordered the Nando's Burrito and the Bravo's Burrito, along with some guac and a couple of beers to enjoy at the counter while we waited for our food. The large chunks of avocado in the big serving of guacamole were a plus, but the pureed texture and relative lack of flavor of the rest of the guac was not. I do love drinking a beer standing at a takeout counter, though. We opened the containers at home to see a Bravo's burrito nearly as big as my head. And I have a big head. My wife says it would feed a family of 5. I say 4, comfortably. We dug in to both burritos, topped with some of the green and red salsas they incuded (both fresh, delicious, perfectly hot), and had to stop for a very short second to look at each other with that look that says you found a dish you know you will consistently crave in the near future. The gigantic Bravo's burrito was mostly filled with rice, but what perfectly cooked and seasoned rice - light and not at all starchy. It only got better, because the chunks of pork inside were some of the most tender and flavorful I've had. There was not one fatty or otherwise objectionable piece of pork in the entire dish. The unexpected lightness of the Bravo's was perfectly contrasted by the density of the beef and beans in the Nando's. The refritos were seasoned and in exactly the right proportion to the beef. I don't think I can say I've ever had a better burrito than either of these two. This was very close to 5 stars for me based on the burritos alone, but the so-so guac and less than so-so ambience (a roadside shack-type feeling, which was just slightly on the wrong side of an air of authenticity) mean I'll have to go back and try some more food in the hope that I can revise my rating upwards. Coming into the small shack like environment I really thought the food was going to be typical and the same quality as any on their Mexican Restaurant but this was WOW. It's hard to explain how great this place is, the environment is very friendly, the food is amazing and the bathrooms are so clean and well presented with Mexican artwork hanging throughout the walls. I ordered a shrimp Enchilada and let me tell you, I usually don't eat the rice or beans that they serve with the dishes but they were so flavored that I just couldn't stop eating them, I also ordered a glass of Horchata and they kept on refilling it. The place had a 100% sanitation grade (which made me feel comfortable eating there) and overall great presentation and representation of what good Mexican food taste like . read more

Fresh. Tasty. Friendly. Cheap. As others have said, this is the best mexican in the triangle. It's a bit of a drive from downtown Carrboro/CH, but well worth it. They have limited seating, so going at diner time is going to mean a wait. It's worth it, and you can grab beers while you wait, but it does make going out to Fiesta Grill a whole evening's activity. They have ceviche for $3. It's delish. You can order 2 of them and be stuffed. Dinner for 6 bucks. You cannot beat that. They do run out over the course of the night, so get there early. Also, they get props for their fresh veggie options. Sometimes ordering vegetarian mexican food is a risk, because its all rice, beans, and cheese. That is not the case here. The veggie enchilada is stuffed full with fresh veggies like squash and peppers. I cannot recommend this place enough, if only it were closer to town and had more seating. read more

The owner is from Tijuana so I had high expectations when I first ate here. The food isn't eactly Southern California style like I'm used to but it is delicious. The chips and salsa are great. I've had the Mole Enchiladas and the owner was nice enough to cook up a California Burrito the way they do it in San Diego. It's a burrito filled with steak, pico de gallo, cheese, french fries and enchilada sauce. Sometimes people like it with guacamole too. It's really good. The prices are kind of high but the place is worth it. It's definitely one of the best Mexican Restaurants in the piedmont. Don't go if you're in a hurry. The service is great but the place is tiny and only fits about 20 people inside. If you have to wait a few minutes do it. It's worth the wait. read more
