I walked into the restaurant and felt an enormous amount of positive energy hit my body. Rain had just began to fall as my girlfriend and I were seated next to the window to admire the wonderful setting. It was our first time going out in some time and we had picked this restaurant out of a hat. The waitress came back and gave us the menu to which we perused with great intensity. Each item and description proceeded to intensify the hunger we felt. At the end of our long, thoughtful deliberation we decided upon three items. A sushi roll, a sushi burrito, and a poke bowl. We were surprised with complimentary miso soup and edamame to which we feverishly devoured. Then the food came. My first bite sent my body into shock, I tasted the ocean from where the fresh fish had been caught. I felt the waves that shaped that fish into a grown beautiful animal. My spirit exited my body as I continued to enjoy each and every single bite. Then the second dish. Equally as beautiful and tasteful. Yet the experience was absolutely unique. I've had a lot of sushi burritos prior to this one, but this one had a story of flavor. It spoke of adventure and magic. I could not deny the beauty in the food prepared. Finally we moved to the poke bowl. It looked majestic, colorful, and extremely appetizing. I felt as if the bowl put the rainbow to shame and it sure did taste amazing. I reflected upon my time out in the ocean deep sea fishing. I thought about the experience I had wrangling in big fish and the journey I had taken to get there. The food served sent me into ecstasy. Every time I eat here: 1) I get excited because there isn't much poke around Richmond. 2) Order the poke bowl even though the flavors are a bit odd together and I've had better. 3) Leave a little disappointed with the quality of food for what I paid for in the end. The place itself is pretty small, so be prepared to wait a little if you want to dine-in during prime meal times. Service is above average, they are always friendly and let us order more edamame (they serve them 3 at a time here) multiple times. We've also tried their sushi donuts and the fish:rice ratio is pretty decent. The tuna tartar appetizer is also tasty but pricey. Overall, it satisfies my poke bowl craving, but not by much. I was blown away by Fishting Fish! I haven't found a good sushi spot in Richmond, until I came here! The service was 5 stars, the food was 5 stars, and the atmosphere was 5 stars. The restaurant itself is a bit small but well-lit and clean. It is very casual dining with delicious food. Each person gets miso soup and a small dish of edamame for the table. The waitress was very attentive and kind. There are great options on the menu, including sushi rolls, don (poke) bowls, sushi burritos, sushi donuts, sushi nachos, and a sushi flight. I got the Don Diablo Sushi Don (Poke) and it was amazing. The portion size was generous and there were so many great flavors and additions. My friends really enjoyed their monster roll and sushi burrito. The restaurant had store sriracha, in-house sriracha, and another spicy sauce available when asked because I love hot sauce. I loved this restaurant and I highly recommend it as it is the best (any only acceptable) sushi spot in Richmond. There was also limited free street parking available. read more

I went here for the second time this week and really enjoyed the poke bowl. They have complementary miso soup and the poke bowl was really well done. I had the spicy salmon with pickled jalapeños, Edemame, rice, and other pickled Veggies. It had a nice heat, and the arrangement was colorful and bright. The environment itself is simple, but comfortable. Standard wooden tables with a two seater bar. The staff was friendly and courteous. Fighting Fish is my ride or die when it comes to getting a quick sushi fix. For a while they were only doing take out due to the pandemic, but I'm so glad they've opened up back for dine in. I'm not a picky sushi person by any means, so if you're looking for high quality sushi, this might not be the place for you. However, if you're looking for affordable and good sushi, then this place will get it done. I personally love their salmon avocado rolls, tempura shrimp roll, and their spicy tuna rolls. They are so generous with the fish, and have the best fish to rice ratio in the area. I also look forward to dining in during happy hour as well because they're a little cheaper ($5 I believe). While you're at happy hour, make sure to order a few starters as well. My favorites are the flaming tuna nachos (so good!) and the tofu. The only gripe I have is that the space is a little on the smaller side, so if you have a larger party, make sure to make a reservation! read more

Do not come here for Valentine's Day if you aren't looking for an over priced and overcrowded date!! It is a pre set menu with little wiggle room when it came to choosing your own rolls. You had to choose between four different combinations of two rolls and weren't allowed to mix and match. Given that each roll is individually made, there is no reason that we could not choose two of the rolls from different combinations if they were already being made that night. They were understaffed, so the server was forgetting many things such as our drinks, the next course, and to clear dirty dishes off of our table after each course. The manager also was clearly unprepared and unexperienced because he couldn't even name a basic eel roll when presenting the main entree. Oh, and I definitely can't forget to mention the HAIR that was found in the tuna tartar. While the server was extremely apologetic, the manager didn't come by the table, which is common practice in higher class restaurants, especially on one of their special nights like this. For the price of $180 you are paying for two palate cleansing dishes, 6 oysters, two miso soups, an appetizer that might have a hair in it, 4 sushi rolls, and a piece of cake. In my opinion, this amount of food and the quality of it DOES NOT even come close to being worth that price. read more

Firstly, the service was great from start to finish; we were promptly seated and we were able to order within only a few minutes. I've been here three times and had the spicy Poke Don three times. It's soooooooo good! Highly recommend! It's a small space, casual atmosphere. I find that I'm generally tempted by everything on the menu. Truth be told... I came here twice in one week a while back. If you like sushi, give this place a shot as soon as possible. And if you're thinking, ah, another sushi restaurant that people say is great, but serves exactly the same thing as all the others -- then I say "nope!" This is actually very different! We were worried at first, the atmosphere screams hipster and the kids, while well-behaved, are, you know, kids. Absolutely delicious, but a little tricky to eat. By the time you slice it to share, it falls apart a little. But so good I'd get it again. - raw salad bowl: sorry, can't remember the name, but huge chunks of fresh tuna in a bowl with pickled this and that, seaweed, jalapenos, a couple kids of roe, a nice little journey of different flavors and textures. Would get again fo sho. - rolls: a couple rolls were ordered, can't remember which, but both delicious. Everyone was impressed. - sushi burrito: this is a weird thing, but I think it's catching on because this is the second place I've had one. At first I was bummed because they don't ask you what you want on it lik they would at, say, chipotle. My advice is to trust the chef, because he knows way better than you what goes together. This was delicious, perfectly balanced and very fresh. The prices weren't bargains, but they weren't too high. They are doing a lot of reconstruction on the strip across the street (Thank goodness) so there wasn't much to look at. The interior is small, and unlike some sushi restaurants, all the food is made in a back area that's completely walled off. The ceilings are tall and the lighting when I came in late in the evening was dim. Nice quiet, chill music. The server was very friendly and helpful without being overbearing. I had the spicy samurai roll for $11 - it was quite delicious. The portion size was okay - I agree with the thought from another reviewer; I think it'd be nice to have some cheaper options on the menu to order alongside some of the more intense options on the menu - a cheap Avocado roll or veggie roll option would be good. My friends and I got there at 7:48 PM for an 8:00 PM reservation and they were able to accommodate us right away. It's a small and intimate setting which is perfect for dates. The menu has an eclectic and delicious mix of offerings. I had the sushi burrito and loved it. The only tough part is that it falls apart half way through trying to eat it. Every entree comes with edamame and miso soup for the table. All of the food was great but the server brought the edamame out after our meal and my friend's miso soup came out after the rest of us were practically finished. The food could be put out more consistently and the sushi burrito could have been wrapped tighter but it was still so delicious. We had the Shrimp ceviche, split a Samurai roll and a bowl of Hawaiian Poke Don. Definitely hit the spot for what we were looking for in a city that I'm guessing is not known for their sushi.
