The newest addition to the coming up restaurant scene in Jackson Ward did not disappoint . The restaurant itself is not very big and only has a handful of tables but it was perfect for our date night. The menu features apps,sushi,and a variety of rice based bowls called DON. We decided to try the poke flight as our app since I couldn't just pick 1 bowl . The flight give you 3 diff types of poke with chips.The chips were nice with the poke but unnecessary, the flavor was bland and didn't do anything for me. (spicy tuna, salmon my fav one, and a blue fin tuna that was marinated in soy sauce and sesame oil ) The sushi menu features 6 different rolls which is small compared to other places . I personally found that refreshing since having too much of a selection can seem overwhelming sometimes. We got the spicy samurai and the tiger tempura. The sushi was AMAZING and probably the best I've had in Richmond yet. The rolls were very filling and stuffed with a TON of fresh seafood.With each bite I got a mixture of crunch, seafood, sauce, and rice. The tempura wasn't oily and overly fried and they had the perfect rice ratio (no mouth full of just rice)this time . We were stuffed by the end of our fest but happy. The poke craze has finally hit Richmond! They have less than 10 tables in the restaurant and it was about half filled when I visited. I'm sure as more buzz is generated, there will soon be quite a line to get in here full of people eager to check them out. Their menu was relatively simple and straightforward with each item having a clear description. Miso soup and edamame were complementary with our entrees. --Hawaiian Poke Don [$13]-- They give you an option of either tuna or salmon and we went for the salmon. Accompanying it included seaweed salad, Masago (small fish eggs), pickled radish and onion, cucumber, avocado, edamame, scallions which are served over seasoned rice. The quality of the salmon was good and it wasn't overly seasoned. You get about a quarter cupful in your bowl which I thought was ok for the price. The portion size of the bowl overall though was pretty meek and I felt that they could have at least added more oomph to it. They do give you a huge dollop of Masago which I didn't think added much to the bowl. I think it would have been better had they used smaller amount of Tobiko (another variety of small fish eggs :P ) which has better flavor and texture. I know I seem to be nit picking, but it was a relatively small bowl for what you're paying for so I was expecting a lot out of each component. --Tuna Lover Roll [$9]-- All of their rolls have a lot going on. I prefer the simplistic rolls and wish they offered some on their menu, but we ended up going for the Tuna Lover roll. It was a spicy tuna center topped with slices of tuna, avocado, wasabi mayo, and garlic lime sauce. Eating the roll, we were reminded why these types of rolls don't appeal to us. The flavor of the spicy tuna center overwhelmed everything else in the roll. The spicy tuna also had a mealy feeling (maybe due to soggy tempura flakes?) that made the roll unappealing to eat. Other diners seemed to be enjoying the rolls that they got so maybe we just got unlucky with this one. --Service-- I was expecting a relatively quick meal here but it took some time for our food to come out (~30 minutes). Since most of the components of the items on their menu are pretty much already prepped or raw, I'm not sure why our food took so long to come out. New restaurant in Jackson award! It's very tiny so it's not great for larger groups. I initially was going to give it 3 or 4 stars because the service was very slow- (it took an hour to get appetizers), however they earned 5 stars given the quality and taste or food and for customer service. There are many selections on the menu, mostly raw. We had a Pok flight which I didn't have any of but my husband and our friends devoured it. They provide you with Miso Soup and edamame. Our meals and sushi were amazing as well and worth the wait. Food was fresh and flavorful, many different sauces- some were spicier than others so be careful They did run out of steak for one of the carnivore options we ordered, however, I believe it was the owner provided us complimentary sushi rolls and offered us a complimentary meal on our next visit. I believe they were short staffed which speaks to the slow service, they also have not been opened that long. We will def be back and are looking forward to how they improve their services. Price is pretty reasonable for all that you get, pretty small place but when we went it was close to closing time for the lunch hour. Street parking, be better if you can walk. Love love love this tiny little place. My go-to is one of the many 'don' dishes, they're so tasty and have a little bit of everything so there are tons of flavors and textures in one dish! I do wish they had a plain traditional 'don' with just fish over rice, but the twist they put is still very tasty. Being born and raised in Japan I can be critical of sushi joints, but this one is definitely worth a visit for some unique sushi eats! I didn't give them 5 stars because the service leaves something to be desired. I usually have to awkwardly stand squished at the front for 5-10 minutes next to a seated couple trying to enjoy their meal before a waiter even acknowledges my existence, which isn't usually a big deal, but this place is literally crazy small. read more

This place is great--and I'm sure it was even better prior to Covid. We did a pick up order and they were very accommodating, even after we placed our order and forgot a few things. There are only a few seats and I expect that they get filled on weekends especially since the food is so good! I ordered the sushi donut for starters and the presentation was really nice it was almost too good to eat! (Disclaimer: kinda hard to share) the sauce inside was so good, and the toppings were definitely fresh For the main dish I got the BBQ unagi don. I was pretty hesitant on trying this place since I heard it was on the pricier side and smaller portions...but I caved. I am so mad that I did not try this place earlier! To start off, the restaurant itself is small with maybe 10 tables max. I would not recommend going here with a big group (try Sushi King instead!). The waiter was very attentive and helpful. He always kept our water glasses full which is a sign of good service to me! We got complimentary edamame and miso soup. Both of which were great and a nice start off to the meal. For appetizer we ordered the Fighting Fish Tower. Which was ironically one of the more expensive things on the menu. The presentation was beautiful (if you care about that stuff) but the taste blew my mind. It was very fresh and flavorful! I was surprised at how well all these relatively simple components mixed, complemented each other so well. It was a layer of avocado, sushi rice, blue fin tuna, salmon, crabmeat and some fish eggs to top it all off. We killed it. It was great. Definitely recommend. Honestly it was a decent size as well! As for our main entrees I got the dragon roll which is basically a really good/ fancy eel roll. It was delicious and pretty filling for me. I would not say it was anything special but it was fresh and really tasty. My fiance got a spicy poke don bowl. Pro tip: you can get half salmon and half tuna for the same price! Definitely recommend doing that if you are unsure of what you want. That was also fantastic. Again super fresh (do you sense a theme here?) and flavorful. They had a lot of various toppings and fixings in the bowl such as pickled radishes, avocado, edamame and much more. Overall, it is safe to say that I was very pleased. They don't really have much for vegetarians but I saw that they had a veggie sushi donut and that just sounds cool, so I've gotta give it a try, right?! And I'm sad to say it was just meh.... It was really just a pile of rice with a few veggies placed on top. It looked super pretty but was nothing special. And I definitely wouldn't consider it a donut. The one thing that saved this place was the service and their willingness to adjust their offerings to make them veg. They offered complimentary edamame and miso to start which was pretty tasty and we tried a special made veggie version on the Spicy Samurai roll. Not the best veg sushi I've ever had but still yummy. I was in Richmond for 10 days for work. Tried somewhere new every day for lunch. I'm happy to say Fighting Fish is by far the best food I enjoyed in RVA. I ordered the poke combo (Hawaiian and spicy tuna). They brought out miso and edamame for the table. The miso was rich and delicious with a creamy color. I have enjoyed lots of poke. This poke bowl far exceeded my expectations. The attention to detail was impressive. Each ingredient was thoughtful placed and compliment the dish in a delicious way. The fish was fresh and delicious. It was a beautiful poke bowl. For dessert I had a cookies and cream mochi. This was the first time I have found cookies and cream mochi in the states. I don't like when mochi is over done. I don't like chocolate sauce on my mochi. Why do people do this!?! It's not traditional. It would have been amazing without the fluff. Service during lunch was ok. There was only one guy serving all the tables and waiting on the bar. It was good for the conditions but definitely needs more. I came back here (with a different friend) and it was, as expected, wonderful! Our server was friendly, knowledgeable, and had a great handle on the tables. The Fighting Fish has arrived & it didn't let down. On the same block as Jkogi(same owner I believe), they are serving up some fucking flavours. Went there tonight with my girlfriend & enjoyed every moment of it. We started off with the Pokè flight that comes with 3 different types to sample. I'm an islander, I gotta see if its legit. Shit was on point, point blank. Soon after, the sushi rolls arrived. Tiger Tempura & The Spicy Samurai is what we chose to go with. Nailed it with both. Though I wanted to eat them both by myself, I had to share with my girlfriend unfortunately. Whoever says sharing is caring, probably has a participation trophy just for joining a rec team. Overall the meal was a 10/10. Menu is an appropriate size for the place itself. Definitely am coming back to grub down on the other foods they have. Amazing! The poke was delicious. The lunch menu was straight forward with flavor combinations that will fix all cravings. The flavors were simple and clean and not as rustic as many trendy Chipotle style poke restaurants. The bowls were definitely a piece of art. It was assembled with the same care as a beautiful ramen bowl. The pieces of fish were cut to the perfect size and did not have any connective tissue. The dressing was not overpowering, the rice was cooked perfectly, and the toppings were very fresh. They served us food without silverware. Not a big deal. Mistakes happen. After about 15-20 minutes of waiting to get their attention, I asked for a pair of chopsticks. The waitress was a little rude to us despite us patiently waiting for service. Atmosphere: The atmosphere is adorable. It's dimly lit, giving a nice romantic atmosphere. There's cute little plants around the room. Pretty cramped though. You'll probably need to make a reservation. Cost: I don't remember. Overall: But there are infinitely better sushi places in Richmond with better prices, better atmosphere, and better service. We got here around 845 on a Saturday night and wow the sushi was amazing. All the sushi entrees come with miso soup. I ordered the monster roll and it was VERY filling. A bit spicy so I removed the firecracker sauce that was drizzled on top of it. My boyfriend got the tiger roll (be careful of this roll because it does have a hidden spice! It's at the bottom where the sauce is), but spicy tuna wasn't too spicy which was good! Walking in, it is a pretty laid back place. I came in having a sushiritto before, so I wanted to try something new. Not sure what a poke bowl was I found it to be a delightful surprise. Here is where I am torn between giving a 3 or 4, the presentation of the dish was nice and the restaurant was very simple. Trying the food it was just spicy, there was no real flavor. I know that the rice may have a mild salty flavor and side veggies should have some flavor, but the sauce they doused the tuna in was a bit overwhelming, that is why I dropped them to a 3. If the sauce was a bit more balance and the other flavors could come out, I think the dish would be much better.
