After some shopping in Carytown, my teen and I stopped in for a weekend lunch. The place was empty at 2pm, but the decor is very cute. My daughter ordered the pad see ew with beef and I ordered a special roll. My roll was excellent. The noodles and flavor of her dish was really good. The reason for 3 though is the beef was so tough that she literally chewed and discarded it in her napkin. She managed to get a bite or two of the beef down, but left the rest. We didn't say anything to the server, which we probably should have (mostly for them to be aware), but I thought might teen might die of embarrassment, if I said anything. One other table came while we were there. I always prefer a bustling restaurant over a quiet one. They did have music playing, which helped it not feel too quiet. Given the variety of restaurants in the walking area, I probably would not go back. It could have been one unlucky dish, so I don't discourage others. read more

The sushi here was fantastic and super fresh! If you're an anime lover the whole place is anime themed and so are a lot of the rolls. The servers were very knowledgeable about the food and the options that were safe for my wife with Celiac. This is one of those places that you want to tell everyone about. Mayu is a cute family-owned and operated restaurant located in the Carytown area of Richmond and they are serving an authentic Thai dining experience as well as a fresh sushi bar. We started out with a suggestion of milk tea and it was quite delicious! First time trying it and loved it! The bartender said it's even better with alcohol. For food I had a little bit of everything and all of it was good. I mean seriously delicious. The curry dumplings were my favorite and it was a flavor explosion in my mouth. Washed it all down with not one but two spicy margaritas they were that good. The fresh cucumber juice Jacob puts in it, really set it off. If you fancy Asian cuisine then you should definitely try Mayu and if it isn't your thing, step outside your regular degular foodie box and try something new and delicious. You cannot go wrong here. If you want delicious and authentic Thai food, this is the place for you! Mayu is incredibly delicious and has great food. Their sushi master knows what he's doing and takes his time being intentional about each dish. You can't go wrong with whatever you order here. Mayu is located in Carytown, so is a great place to stop after some shopping (or fuel before shopping). I highly recommend keeping your eyes open for the sushi specials of the day because it is usually an incredible nigiri. There is a good amount of seating available inside. You can find bar seating and a bunch of tables. There isn't any outdoor seating at this spot. If you need to use the restrooms, you have to go down some stairs. I highly recommend ordering a tasty Thai iced tea here. Do be mindful that service can be really slow here. They're intentional with their dishes so food can take a little to come out. It was my first time trying Mayu & I was impressed. The atmosphere is cozy but modern, staff greeted me as soon as I walked in. I started with the a small wonton soup which perfectly seasoned. I wasn't that hungry so I ordered the saiyan roll (salmon) which tasted incredibly fresh. The fish was sliced beautifully, and each piece was balanced -- not overloaded with rice like some places. They have a solid pad thai. I ordered mine with veggies, extra bean sprouts, "American Spicy." Portion was decent, flavor was good, spice level was perfect--I can handle a fair amount of heat, and this level was enough to warm me up but not too spicy where I'd have to drink a lot of water. Recently brought a girl group in for a birthday. They were very accommodating to our party at 10. I love the combination of sushi and Thai. Every tie dish we got was great. My hand roll actually had big chunks of meat and although I'm used to slices. It was very flavorful and fresh. Not a fan of the up charge for add ones... But in this economy restaurants have to do what they gotta do. The ambience is really on point. That is great. We did have one hiccup where one of the vegan diners at our table was brought a chicken and shrimp wonton dish and that almost ended badly. The staff was able to remedy it before too much damage had been done. I enjoyed the flavor and all of my food and everyone else at the table enjoyed their dish as well (except the vegan mishap) so I'll definitely be back for more (and for pictures). read more

The people I was with wanted to go to Fighting Fish but my partner and I eat takeout there alll the time. I've been wanting to try Maui since I saw Lena post about them during their grand opening, so I suggested we go there instead. It was a Friday night in Carytown (iykyk), so we parked in literally the first spot we could find and used GPS to walk to the restaurant. It was then that we realized that they were closing in 30 minutes! We'd already driven out of our way, so we tried our luck and went in anyway. To our surprise, the restaurant was still pretty full and we were seated with no fuss and no warnings about the "kitchen closing". Every staff member we encountered, from the bartender, to the runners was so nice and polite. There was never a moment where we felt rushed. Our server was on it, and when I asked her name to s/o in the review, she said to just call her the "Cute lil' Asian Girl" :) For appetizer - we got the curry potstickers. So tasty, but the order was small (only 4 pieces) so we ordered a second round of them. We couldn't get enough of the red curry sauce, so we also ended up ordering the "gang dang" to-go. We also got two cocktails - the Spiked Thai Tea and the Moss Head. Both were delicious. For rolls, I got the Saiyan and my partner got the Akira and the Karuma. The sushi was good overall and tasted fresh, but the rolls felt extremely small and I think the sushi rice could've been better. But overall, the place is a total vibe and I'd go back. read more

Casual Japanese/ Thai cuisine located on a nice street. We parked on the street, it seemed like a safe neighborhood. Service was friendly albeit a bit disorganized and forgetful on the menu. The pad Thai, curry dumplings, sushi rolls were all about average. I felt the miso soup a bit above average. The standout is the chefs special. While the scallop photos of Yelpers past got me through the door (they didn't have that special this visit), the Norwegian salmon belly fully dressed was fantastic. We ordered it again. I'd say if you let this chef run with it more and train the waitstaff a bit you'd easily have a five star stand-out spot. I went with a three star rating because a majority of the food was as one might expect, service a little off, and the bathrooms slightly needed more love. I liked the artwork. Mayu recently opened, and I went with two Thai lover friends. We got Thai versus the sushi. And we ate every bite. The fried calamari appetizer was small. Most places easily give you twice as much. In fact, the entree portions seemed on the small side as well. I ended up with the standby pad Thai, which was not the best, but good enough. My friends had no complaints with their dishes. I peeped Mayu one day when driving down Cary and was really intrigued and finally got the change to try it for lunch today! Ordered a bunch of different things across both the Sushi and Thai menus and everything was delicious. The sushi quality is amazing, and I love that their rolls also have some extra nicer touches to them like smoking the salmon for example (check out the photo - you can practically taste the charred goodness). Really elevates the rolls and the flavors overall. Only thing that surprised me was the roll was much smaller than expected, but the quality was also significantly better, so I wasn't mad about it. On the Thai menu side I ordered the Larb, the Bangkok Chicken and the green curry. Everything was tasty but the Bangkok Chicken was a standout and I would definitely get it again. All in all, I thought the flavors were so good and thoughtful across all of the Thai dishes and (to me) tasted very authentic. We stopped in here on Saturday for a bite, finally! I had walked by it in Carytown a couple times. It's a beautiful space, and quite roomy. We were seated by the host who also acted as our waiter. She gave us a lot of time to think and we ordered the karuma roll, pineapple fried rice and wonton soup. Everything was delicious! It is definitely a casual place. Mayu is an trendy, fun restaurant in the heart of Carytown. I went on a Friday evening with another dining companion at dinner time. It was reasonably busy, but we received our table immediately. We were given a generous amount of time to review the menu--with no special notes provided, along with a big bottle of chilled water. My dining partner ordered a Diet Coke, which arrived in a can--which we thought was kind of weird for a restaurant like that, so heads up. We both ordered Tom Kha soup ($7 for a small bowl, +$3 to change the protein to shrimp), Massaman curry ($18, +$3 for shrimp), and the Spicy Tuna Roll ($10). I also wanted to order some nigiri sushi--which we'll get to in a moment. The soup was very good, but I will say I've had soup of the same quality at places like Chadar that are at a lower price, only a much larger portion. The broth was a real winner though, with a great depth of flavor. The mushrooms were very fresh and didn't have that rubbery quality old mushrooms can get. The Massaman curry was delicious, really worth a try. The peanuts were toasted, the broth was so flavorful--and just sweet enough without feeling like I was eating peanut butter soup. The potatoes and onions definitely need to cut in half though, they are very large pieces. Again though, comparably speaking, I've had Massaman curries in Richmond that are less expensive--even if you knock off the $3 for shrimp, and just as good, if not better. The spicy tuna roll was good, but very, very skinny. It was almost comical how thin the sliced rolls were. Now we get to the not so good part: While initially ordering our food, I decided I wanted to try the tuna belly and asked for two pieces, only to receive a fairly important piece of information--the sushi chef was gone for the weekend and therefore sushi (except for rolls) were not being offered that weekend, ostensibly killing over a third of their menu. And we were told by our waitress in a tone that indicated that we'd somehow missed this information earlier. It was a sort of, 'DUH' tone. I asked my dining partner if there had been a sign out front, or if someone had mentioned it and I somehow missed it, neither was the case, and there was nothing on the menu to indicate that a restaurant at peak dinner hours on a Friday night in a popular entertainment district was missing a large portion of its menu. The service was a little spotty, beyond the 'duh' tone we got from our waitress. Our table had in empty bowls and plates, which we had to navigate around in order to get to the rest of our food. We didn't get a check in on drinks, and I finally had to catch the eye of the hostess--something I never do--in order to request a fresh bottle of water. My dining partner didn't bother asking for another can of soda. And it was clear they wanted to turn over the tables quickly, making for a bit of a rushed experience. It is not a space that encourages one to linger. Overall, Mayu appears to want to be a cool, hip cocktail bar that happens to serve Thai and sushi when the sushi chef is in town. If you asked me where to go in town for Thai, this place would not make my top three in town though. And sushi? Who's to say! I can only comment on the rolls. And those were tasty, but when I do the math on portion size and price, taking quality into account, there are so many other places including in walking distance that serve the same quality or better, without the rolls being tiny. Mayu should rethink some things. There's too much competition in the neighborhood to rest on pretty. read more

Meeting a friend for lunch and we picked Mayu as our destination. Carytown was busy but I found parking nearby and walked over. My friend was running late so I ordered Thai iced tea, but their ice maker was broken so it would be a while before the manager arrived with ice. That's okay, I can wait. After my friend arrived we ordered our meals. She got curry and miso soup and I got hamachi crudo and the Thai basil noddle stir-fry with chicken. Everything was good. Near the end of the meal my Thai iced tea arrived and so did an epic rainstorm. We sat and chatted for a while, waiting for the rain to dissipate. So we kicked off my birthday celebration weekend by meeting some of my family and good friends @mayu.rva and the vibe, food and drinks did not disappoint! Our waitress was super helpful in navigating the menu and tho they were short staffed she did the best she could in order execution, a lag in drink orders but food came to the table piping hot! We placed drink and appetizer orders and I opted for the Mekhong Nong Khai (rum/coconut rum, lime juice and Thai tea) 3/5 the tea overpowered all other ingredients and it was a bit sweet but tasty and via review I ordered the pickled cucumber which was amazing! Layers of flavors and very well marinated 5/5! Shrimp and chicken dumplings, Thai spring rolls, were a hit among the table, 5/5! I ordered the Pad Khing with chicken, super flavorful and at a medium heat it was very good, 5/5! Shrimp and crab fried rice, sushi, pad thai, and Bangcock chicken all rated 4.5-5/5! If I could have the rice from Main St Dragon my plate would have been perfect. The only negatives was the time waiting for the sushi orders (many guests were midway thru their meals before sushi arrived, they enjoyed it tho) and the carafes of lukewarm water. But overall 4.5/5 for the experience! We will definitely return as Mayu serves some of the best Thai in RVA! read more

TL;DR: you should go. I've been to Thailand several times and this is the most authentic tasting Thai food I could find. I love their curry fried rice, spicy noodle soup, tom yum, curry potstickers, dumplings, Red Curry, Drunken Noodles, and Pad Thai. Everything I've had on their menu is tasty. I went here for the first time this weekend because I've passed by here every time I'm at Carytown but I never got a chance to try it until now. When I walked in I was instantly impressed by the layout and decor of the place. There is definitely a homage to anime (specifically one piece) that isn't overwhelming but yet still adds character to the restaurant. We were immediately seated and our server was very helpful with all of our orders. As an appetizer, I started out with some fresh rolls which matched really well with their special chef's sauce that was chunky and yet provided a great texture and a strong taste of peanuts to the dish. I also ordered a plate of the Karuma roll which consisted of spicy tuna, cucumber, shrimp tempura, seared tuna top and it was topped off with their spicy tuna sauce which really took the cake. I cannot rave enough about the quality of the fish in the sushi. By this point I was already thoroughly stuffed but I had to order the chefs special shrimp and crab fried rice to finish it off. When I took that first bite, I really wanted to like it. Aesthetic wise, all the food I've tried so far looked amazing and were definitely instagrammable. When I received my food, I could tell they didn't skimp out on the meat (even the crab meat which surprisingly wasn't the fake crab meat sticks) but in terms of flavor I was moderately disappointed. I felt like the seasonings weren't as strong as I would have liked for the dish but I am appreciative of the fact that they provided fish sauce on the side so I could put it on my dish. My friends got the tofu and the pad thai so I managed to try those dishes as well and they were also lackluster compared to the appetizers that I had earlier.
