TL;DR: I've never understood the fascination with Wiener schnitzel, but even I concede that Figlmüller prepared it with dignity & grace. However, it was the side dishes that transported me out of Vienna & into another dimension. THE DEETS: ***FIGLMÜLLER-SCHNITZEL - our original for more than 100 years, made of pork I believe schnitzel is genetically designed to be dry, homogenous, & boring. Not to mention that it's humongous. I came to Figlmüller knowing this and yet ordered it anyway--I mean they were quite audacious to claim that it's the best in town, so I figured I'd gather some ammunition to destroy them with. But ya know, it was actually quite pleasant, definitely juicier than everywhere else, pleasantly flavored, and pounded thin enough to minimize the per bite protein intake. Now I'm not converting anytime soon, but I see what you did here and I can stand up for it. ***POTATO-FIELD SALAD with Styrian pumpkin seed oil This potato salad was unbelievably good, maybe the best in the region. The potatoes were just firm enough, the dressing perfectly tangy & sweet, and the various little goodies provided that crucial crunch. Served with a delicious fresh salad, a lovely contrast. ***VIENNESE-STYLE BOILED BEEF with chive sauce, apple horseradish and browned potatoes Boiled beef is a very hearty, homey meal, not something that I would normally order at a restaurant, but I was really impressed by the subtle flavor of the broth and the impossibly tender consistency of meat that really was too lean to be tender--it directly fell apart on my fork. And yet the carrot & onion remained just firm enough. Perhaps the most magical portions of the meal were the sauces that accompanied the browned potatoes, on the left a zesty apple horseradish that changed my life forever, and on the right a divinely creamy chive sauce. You're supposed to have a reservation but as they were fully booked online we decided to play by ear and see if we can get seated. Luckily the server graciously let the two of us onto a table meant for 4 and didn't try to hurry is out/let us take our time ordering even though we were probably on someone's reservation. Delicious potato salad went great with the schnitzel. Schnitzel is very over-priced but you know what, it was the experience we paid for and it really was yummy. Boyfriend loved his plate liver as well. Definitely come her for the experience if you're a tourist - you'll have fun taking pictures with the bigger-than-your-head schnitzel. read more

Oh I love Figlmuller! I've been to Vienna twice and had to have Schnitzel when I am there. This place gets very crowded so either try and go early or make reservations. It is a cozy little place that is located in a very small alley way. The staff are very friendly and nice to tourists. :) The Schnitzel is the very best, it is savory and cooked to perfection! I always get the side of German Potatoe salad. It's a heavy meal, but all the shopping you do after will help with the calories. The bread on the table is not Free, if you eat it they will charge you for each one you eat. Great place to go and enjoy the best of Vienna! read more

Good To Know Before You Go The wait: They say they are always busy, but really they just put reserved signs on the tables to appear busier than they actually are (something you see quite often in Vienna). A friend and I showed up and were seated at a reserved spot. Now, that said, this place does attract a crowd and if you come in bigger groups you are more likely to wait--hence the lines you see outside the door. It's a WINERY: so beer lovers, steer clear or acquire a wine palate. The Figlmüller wines come from the family's own vineyards: Grüner Veltliner, Welschriesling and Blaufränkischer. I tasted a few of their white wines and all are delicious--not overly sweet and a bit dry. WC: You need a key as they are in a nice "outhouse" outside. Entrees -Figlmüller-Schnitzel: while it is as big as the plate, ehhh. I find that a lot of gebackene (fried) foods here in Austria tend to be quite dry. When my Oma would make Schnitzel it would be juicy, tender and she would even pour a bit of grease over to keep the fried dough from hardening and drying. I found the thin pancake-looking slab of meat to have a good taste but I needed water. And whelp, there was no water because I wasn't paying for it. -Emmentaler gebacken mit Sauce Tartare (fried Emmentaler cheese): the Emmentaler was fresh and of a great consistency: still semi-hard, yet warm and slightly oozy. -Erdäpfel-Vogerlsalat mit steirischem Kemöl (Potato Salad with Stryian pumpkin seed oil): this is indeed a winner. The potatoes are both hard and somewhat mushy in the delicious pumpkin seed oil underneath the leafy greens. It's tangy, salty, sweet, bitter and creamy. FINAL VERDICT: I certainly wouldn't say this is the best schnitzel in all the land, but it does have a great atmosphere, great wine and great cheese. Mhh! Quantity meets quality (and wins)!!! I was there in the afternoon w/ a colleagues. It was crowded and loud - full w/ tourists from all over the world. We luckily got a table quickly. We ordered Schnitzel and a salad. It took a while to get drinks and food. The salad w/ potatoes and field salad was really good. The Schnitzel was only large. The pricing is high due to flocks of tourist trying to finish the Schnitzel as a part of their Vienna experience. I'm sure, there are better Schnitzel places. If you want the biggest schnitzel ever, this is your place. Service is sub-par and all waiters seem to be mad at the world. I would recommend reservations as it tends to be very crowded ! Still I would go back since it is such a traditional Austrian Gasthaus. read more

I learned my lesson when I saw someone else ordered it so I just got the Schnitzel on it's own. The Schnitzel was very good but I don't know if it's the best. I honestly don't like the word "best" unless you've really tried most of the locations that serves it. This place is very good and let's keep it at that. It's the Hotspot for schnitzel in Vienna. They serve it with their secret ingredients and in a very traditional way. No doubt about their quality... On the other hand, it's also one of Hotspots for the famous viennese rudeness. They simply dont care if you are a tourist, who got impressed by their history or just a local who would like to relieve the experience. All would get shout at to basically stop bothering them if you came without a reservation or called them for that purpose. I'm a tourist from NYC and it was my first time in Vienna. I wanted some authentic traditional Viennese food and discovered Figlmüller! My friend and I ordered the schnitzel, dumpling soup, and a salad. All were good and delicious! It was our first time trying the schnitzel - it was very thin and crispy.. I'm not sure how schnitzels are supposed to taste but this was good. The dumpling was different from the dumplings I've tried in the past..it was like a ball of flour that has been soaking in water for a very long time and the texture was like a dissolving sponge when I ate it. And even though I'm not one to normally recommend a touristy-type food destination, this will have to be one of those few because the Wiener schnitzel here is really that good and should not be missed while visiting Vienna. Just so you know, I am in no way a schnitzel aficionado but I have been living in Germany eating many a' good schnitzel for the past year. Since I'm in Vienna, how can I not stop by the infamous restaurant known for their wiener schnitzel. I personally really liked it, but order a side, I really liked my potato salad. You can ask for cranberry sauce for the meat but I personally love just squeezing lemon on it. I know it may sound pretty plain but it's a better version of a thinly pounded chicken cutlet, but I got the veal one since it's what the restaurant is known for. Definitely the most popular schnitzel restaurant in Vienna. Now it is certainly packed with a lots of tourists for this reason. That and the fact that there is a huge, and I mean HUGE advertisement for it in the airport when you pick up your bags. Not to worry though that trip down there is easy to make if you are in the center and the food is certainly worth the wait. The first time I went here I was by myself and had to wait 45 minutes. I decided to wait it out and was not disappointed. Having suggestions from the staff all three times I've been here, they have always been right on. The potato salad is a very different recipe than I'm used to and very flavorful. The special recipe that they use has been the same for many decades now so it must be perfected. Great place to have a Viennese experience. We had friendly and attentive service and we're happy to sit and enjoy our meal as we waited out the rain. We opted for the schnitzel with potato salad based on their recommendation. The schnitzel was giant, and very tasty with a spritz of lemon. My buddies had schnitzel here and said it was legit. Me? I was not feeling schnitzel even though I heard it was the truth. I think I was all schnitzelled out and pretty full. But hey it's popular and my buddies wanted to give it a go so what the heck. I guess we were lucky because we randomly showed up and were seated immediately. The schnitzel WAS incredibly thin and crispy, and it WAS huge, BUT it was completely overshadowed by the potato salad and greens with pumpkin seed oil dressing deliciousness. I haven't tried all of the schnitzels in Vienna but I have had a few and Figlmüller is hands down the best (and consistently so). I've never had a better Schnitzel anywhere else in the world. I prefer the location in the alley but either one is fine and the food and the service is the same (excellent and indifferent, respectively). Only thing I don't dig about this place is that they don't serve beer. They have some nice wines though and it never seems to be that big of a problem. read more

Loved the old restaurant ambiance. Waitstaff were friendly and attentive. Uniquely huge, thin Wiener Schnitzel. This is veal, so it's the Real Thing. Any stay in Vienna is incomplete without trying these. Have the recommended potato salad with lambs tail and the dark green nutty Styrian pumpkin seed oil to go with it. It's good value, despite the price. They will be happy to let you wrap and take home half the Schnitzel which you could not finish ... While Wollzeile is their main entrance (and where all the tourists go), try the back entrance from the parallel street. It leads to a second restaurant but has the same kitchen. In comparison, this place is less crowded, has more tables, shorter queues, and you get to have both beer and wine. Still, most times of the day, expect to queue unless you have reserved a table. While the queues look daunting, they move fairly fast (at the back entrance, that is). I recently took my octagenerian mother here. She is a real Viennese lady. I was a little surprised when she complained loudly about the Schnitzel. "Much too dry!" she exclaimed and called the waiter. After some highly entertaining back and forth, the waiter confessed. With eyes to the ground he admitted that, yes, they now regularly dab off excess ghee "for the tourists" who don't like it so fatty. Well, I guess modern locals also like it that way. Still, my mother sent her Schnitzel back to the kitchen, demanding "don't you dare dry my Schnitzel" (and she even managed to say that in a sweet endearing way...) A Schnitzel arrived, its golden breading glistening in ghee. And oh my god was it good. So, from then onwards, I also always demand my Schnitzel in its shiny coat, "not dried off". Awesome experience. The Wiener Schnitzel was pounded so thin. We were fortunate to not have to wait a long time. They do have 2 locations nearby each-other if you couldn't get into one of them. There are definitely better schnitzels, and surely nicer atmospheres to experience. The size is impressive, and some of the food is tasty. It's worth maybe one visit in your life. But after that, you're done. Overall, I give it a yawn. But you can enjoy it. Here are the rules: 1. You should only eat here if you get into the original "old school" location. Ask. 2. There are some good salads (potato with pumpkin seed oil) to be had. 3. Don't expect great service, and be delighted when you actually get it -- I've seen it happen! read more

The schnitzel is double what you would pay elsewhere, and generally not as good. An iconic place. My friends who live here scowl at the mention of this place. It is very nice inside. five stars for the quality of their Schnitzel. NOT for the service. The old place is impossible to get into. They do not accept reservations, then you come and there are free tables, but they tell you it is reserved. By whom and how, may I ask??? If you are a group of four-five and more...forget about it. I saw people were PAYING to the waiter to get it!!!! Otherwise, they send you to the new place, which is ok, touristy, the schnitzel is the same- good, but the atmosphere is not the same charm, as if in the old Figlmuller. By the way. The real Schnitzel is a VEAL schnitzel. They often don't ask you and serve you PORK schnitzel- which looks very thin and crisp, because naturally, pork is drier then the veal. Veal schnitzel is harder and looks "bumpy", but still HAS TO BE CRISP on outside. The service in the new place is also painfully SLOW. I've had the Schnitzel before, and I have to admit, I still can't finish it! The potato salad is to die for, and the accompanying salad with the pumpkin seed dressing is superb! I would also like to recommend the glazed calf's liver....(no, it's not anything like you think!) I'm not the world's biggest liver fan, mainly because of the disgusting cooking methods that surround its culinary history. This is a tender piece of liver which has also been flattened out (not as much as the Schnitzel) and grilled rare with a beautiful red wine glaze. Actually I wasn't the one who ordered this! Luckily the local we were with had the foresight to reserve us a table earlier in the day! There was a small line out the door. We were told we could only have one hour...which was fine but it's never that nice to feel rushed...especially when you are eating the biggest piece of schnitzel you have ever laid eyes on! So, this place has two locations, both in the same block, we ate at the one on the main street. You stand in line, they seat you as a table comes available, and it is apparently THE place in Vienna to get Weiner Schnitzel. The standard portion is HUGE. Either split it with a friend or order the Kleine portion. Also: Order ONE plate of the warm potato salad (its really good) because that portion will be big too. Superb food. I've had schnitzel at a very good place in Cologne previously, and other than that it's been places in the UK. Which might as well be the other side of the world as far as schnitzel is concerned. This is the best schnitzel I've ever had. Now, firstly the restaurant is busy - but we were very lucky. As it turns out there are multiple locations but we went to the one down the alley. We timed it extremely well as afterwards we were curious to see how heavily booked it was, and it was booked out for about a week! But we just walked in without a queue at about 1 o'clock with two of us and were seated straight away. The service was prompt and very polite, I tried a splattering of 20 year old GCSE German, which caused no problems as the waiter spoke perfect English (a relief!). We both ordered the schnitzel and a potato salad to share, along with two grape juice spritzers. I'm a sucker for a schitnizel that hangs over the edge of the plate on all sides. But trust me, I ate the whole thing! The potato salad was delicious as was the little leafy salad that came with it. This was so perfect, that I said upon leaving that if we ever come back to Vienna that I'm going there again. My only sadness was that we were only in the city for a few hours and so I couldn't exactly go twice! Schnitzel! SCHNITZZZELLL! I honestly don't even know why they give you a menu. if you're coming for anything else other than schnitzel, you're a) crazy and 2) wrong. We knew we were risking it, coming to this small place without a reservation at 1pm on a weekday in June, but it all worked out. There was no wait and we sat in the little conservatory area on the alley itself. That suited us well, as it was a hot day and it was pleasant here. The tables all had reserved signs - including the one we sat at - but Brian surmised that it was to stop people from walking in and just seating themselves. I think he's probably right. Having read other reviews, I knew we didn't need to order salad and potato salad, so we just got one potato salad to share (which still came with some salad, anyway), and 2 schnitzels. It was all top notch. Schnitzel, to be fair, is pretty plain - but this was really well seasoned (bordering on salty, as I like) and the lemon really cut through it all. The potato salad was OUT OF THIS WORLD. If I could somehow have eaten it by the bucket, I would. In the end, I only managed about half my schnitzel and a bit of my drink, but I definitely had all of my half of the salad and potato salad bowl. I didn't much care for my drink, which was their house-made grape juice mixed with soda water. I just found it a bit too tart - it tasted alcoholic, even though it wasn't, and as a non-drinker, I just don't have the taste for it. But it was refreshing! The charming waiter offered to wrap up my sadly unfinished schnitzel but I declined, as I was pretty sure I'd never need to eat again. In hindsight, we could have done with 2 potato salads and 1 schnitzel to share - not that the potato salad was better than the main event, but just that the schnitzel is really quite big. Having had schnitzel for the very first time the day before at a reputable cafe in Prague, I was enormously shocked when the schnitzel came to the dinner table. Strangely enough, the recommended side salad was really, really good & fresh. Finishing that wienerschnitzel, however, was a challenge - but it was worth every bite! The potato salad with pumpkin seed oil dressing is the best I have ever had. Their wine was perfect with the dinner. Had the Weiner Schnitzel (veal Viennese Schnitzel, not the big pork one) which was nice. Just a little plain for my taste. Also tried Kaiserschmarrn for my first time here. This was a nice sweet pancakey dessert. Supposed to be a traditional Austrian dessert. I'd definately recommend that. Plus it just sounds cool to say Kaiserschmarrn :P Server was nice, quick and friendly. If you make reservations, you go to one side of the restaurant... Orrr you use a different entrance from another street of you are just walking in. We didn't have a reservation There was a lineup outside, but we were taken in about 10 minutes. read more

be aware that the old restaurant on the wollzeile strasse has a different menu, more original but also more limited. the menu was limited as was our budget for the day so we went for the pork schnitzel which met our expectation for not being as good as wiener schnitzel but cheaper, the potato salad was kind of awful, the cucumber salad was ok and the service was the service you get when you go to a place where 99.99999% of the patrons are tourists. i think i'd go to the new location if i could do it again. read more

Wiener Schnitzel! This is the place to go for the best schnitzel. I'm drooling just thinking about it again. I decided to call a few hours ahead to make a reservation. It was an excellent decision because when we got there people were waiting in line for an hour. Staff: I feel awful about the poor server. Unfortunately, my friends misunderstood or couldn't hear each time so I was left doing most of the talking. And being such a terrible conversationalist, I didn't give him a lot to work with, resulting in awkward silences. But the food came quick and he was attentive all night. Ambience: It is a small place. We were seated in the outer heated area which is adorned with articles that have featured the restaurant. I will note that the restrooms are actually outside the restaurants so it was a bit unusual. Food: It is huge! I was so full at the end. The schnitzel was so thin and crispy and juicy! It came with these delicious potatoes and salad. So good! I normally try more dishes but I was so full. Note that if you order bread, they will charge per roll even if they bring a basket.
