My friend and I had dinner at Figlmüller Bäckerstraße (there are two locations). It's one of several restaurants under the Figlmüller restaurant group, which began in 1905 when Johann Figlmüller opened the first location - a small wine tavern right behind St. Stephen's Cathedral. It's still family-owned by the fourth generation of the Figlmüller family. We had a reservation, which I highly recommend. When we arrived, there was quite a long line outside the building, but we were able to walk right in to get seated at our reserved table. Figlmüller Bäckerstraße may be the offshoot of the original, but it still has tons of historic character. It's traditional and cozy and warm. The service was great, too - it made for a very comfortable spot. My friend and I shared: Figlmüller-Schnitzel, creamy veal goulash with spätzle, and carrot salad. We might have had a couple of glasses of wine, too. The food was all great - Viennese classics and delicious. Overall, I thought Figlmüller lived up to the hype. If you're looking for a classic spot for Viennese schnitzel, consider Figlmüller Bäckerstraße.
Figlmüller in Vienna totally lived up to the hype! The pork schnitzel was huge, tender, and delicious, bigger than the plate! The berry sauce paired perfectly with it. The place was spotless, including the bathrooms, and the staff were super friendly. What made it truly unforgettable was not just the food but also meeting new friends from Malaysia and Taiwan while waiting in line. They had a reservation (we didn't!) and invited us to join them. Strangers from opposite sides of the world sharing an amazing Viennese meal, stories, and laughs. Proof that good food really does bring people together.
When you're in Vienna, you have to try the Pork Snitzel. You can get it from a few places in Austria, but this restaurant is probably the most famous. There's a couple locations, but one location nearby was closed for renovations, so there was quite a line. Reserve in advance if possible. The Figlmüller-Schnitzel is a traditional staple. It is very thin, but a large piece, softly breaded and dry since it is white meat. But after a while, it's more of the same. A lemon slice only help so much. Sides are extra, I tried the potato-field salad with pumpkin seed oil; small mixed salad; Spinatknodel / spinach dumplings. Water is also extra here. Overall, you have to try it once when you're in Austria. Otherwise, it is fancier, but pricier than other restaurants. They do have different seating, including tables deep into the basement, as if they're bunkers?
I found this place to be amazing! We found it on the recommendation of our walking tour guy. We did not have a reservation obviously, and they told many people to go away. But they told my sister and I to hang out and wait a few minutes and then behold, they got us in. I had the schnitzel, which overlap the plate which was as big as my head. My sister had the goulash, and the potato salad was to die for. It was covered in not a warm baking sauce, but some slightly sweet sauce, and piled high with watercress. Really enjoyed this place!

Short wait for the food but make sure you make a reservation. There's a long queue if you don't have a reservation. So happy we went to this famous restaurant. It lives up to its reputation. Nobody will deny that the thin, crispy breading, tender pork schnitzel this place is known for is delicious. What I would recommend, seriously, is if they offered a variety of toppings to add some moisture, richness, sweet or tart balance. I ordered the white asparagus side with a side of hollandaise sauce that I dipped my slices into. The service was slow and the only waiter in the room could come in and ignore you. It became a goal of my table neighbors and I to get his attention. Not necessarily a Figlmüller issue, but it was hot & humid and their AC (or any air flow) sucked. Along with having to fan myself with my menu I ordered a couple of Radlers to cool down. I took down about 75% of my schnitzel and had no room left for anything else. The service was the reason for the 4 stars. The next time I go I will make sure I get something to pour over or dip my schnitzel in.
I absolutely love this place! I come here on every visit to Vienna. Sure, there are a lot of places around that serve Wienershcnitzel, but this place still has a reputation and an old-world charm that is unmatched in any other place in Vienna. Make a reservation, otherwise, prepare to wait. If you're staying in a nice hotel, ask the concierge and I am sure they will get you in. The menu is small, but order the item they are famous for- Wienerschnitzel! I have eaten here many times and am always impressed with the size of the schnitzel! It definitely does cover the edges of the plate. Also, trust the waiter's recommendation on wine. He is not trying to upsell you. The Steak Tartare is incredible, but make sure you save room for the main event. The sides are okay, nothing spectacular, but they do go well with the Schnitzel. On my last visit, the waiter was awesome, friendly and funny and genuinely happy to serve us. If you are here for a few days, feel free to try another place, but go here at least once- you will NOT be disappointed!
We shared their signature pork schnitzel and it's so massive that the two of us couldn't finish. Served with a single lemon slice so HIGHLY recommend the side salads for some acidity & sweetness!! Texture wise, it's more chewy (?) than crispy. Not bad or anything, but just not for me Probs would taste better with sauce, ketchup even, but that's very American of me. If you can, make a reservation ahead of time. But if not, expect to be in line anywhere from 40 mins to an hour. I came around lunch time so I did have to wait in line but I wasn't bothered because I was not in a rush. However if you don't have too much time in town you can also get a good Wiener schnitzel anywhere else. This was my first time trying this famous Vienesse dish and it was huge so you can definitely share. It was pretty tasty and it reheats well lol. I had the leftover the next day. The potato salad was delicious too. Overall a good meal. This place is probably pricier than other local spots. Service was okay.
This is THE place for schnitzel. Not the cheapest or fanciest but it is perfect for a classic Austrian dining experience. Our favorite meal of the trip. The green salad, the wine, the potato salad were all lovely complements to the schnitzel. Slight language barrier ordering but our server was so nice and helpful. Save room for dessert!!
Would recommend getting a reservation here since it can get busy. My bf and I shared the original pork schnitzel with lingonberry jam and the tomato salad. The schnitzel was just average - it was pretty dry and not crispy. The jam made it taste yummy though. It was a very large portion, so definitely shareable. The salad was fresh. I tried my bf's apple strudel, but it didn't blow my mind.
Fancier restaurant to try wiener schnitzel. There are two locations right by each other that take walk-ins (but seems like there's usually a line) or make reservations online ahead of time! Shared one Wiener schnitzel between two people and ordered a side of the Austrian style potato salad. Tasty and a good spot if you want a more upscale experience.

I had dinner there as part of a party of 9. If you have a larger group I strongly recommend making a reservation in advance. That lets you skip the long queue and get seated right away. The place was huge inside, bigger than expected from the outside. It was packed with people in a good way and the decor was tasteful and inviting. The wait staff were really friendly and attentive and visited just often enough to make sure we had what we needed. The food was great, and the classic schnitzel was massive but thin enough that it didn't feel overwhelming to eat. I paired it with the potato salad that included greens and both were excellent. If you're getting the schnitzel I suggest the longenberry preserve because the schnitzel itself is on the blander side. read more

We tried the original pork schnitzel, the original potato field salad and the semolina dumpling soup with beef broth, it was all delicious. Everything was beautifully presented, perfectly cooked, and bursting with flavor. Our waiter Christian was very kind and personable and the food came quicker than expected. We had a reservation which we highly recommend getting as the line outside was very long. The ambiance was perfect with lighting the wasn't overwhelming and a layout that made the restaurant feel intimate and cozy. Next time we're in Vienna, we will absolutely be back. Don't miss the chance to eat here while in the city. read more

This is THE place for schnitzel. Not the cheapest or fanciest but it is perfect for a classic Austrian dining experience. Our favorite meal of the trip. A rating of 4 but might really be a 3.5. I struggle with Figlmuller each visit. But the last trip to Vienna we passed on it. I have to tell myself this a predominantly a tourist restaurant. And when I accept that it's ok...and yes I am a tourist but really enjoy eating and conversing with locals. We arrive right in time for our booking and were seated immediately among all the tourists. We hadn't been seated two minutes and our waiter was saying "what would you like to order". At that time we knew we had to slow him down. I ordered a Wiener Schnitzel with a side of Lingonberry jam and the waiter asked what side I would like. I asked what came with it and he answered "nothing" my response was "ok, nothing". He was rather flippant at that moment. Oh well. We also ordered the Rye Bread and sweet butter and an entree of Veal Goulash with Spaetzel and of course wine. We looked up and there was our bread. I looked in the cute little bag and there was not three but 3 and 1/2 pieces of small sliced bread... I could only assume the worst. It was ok. Knew I didn't need the filler. Entrees arrived and they were pretty sad looking... not like the schnitzel around me. Mine was two pieces not covering the plate and the beautiful ones around me were one piece covering the whole plate. Disappointed for the photo. It was very good with salt added and lemon provided. I have had better at less if a visit and which also included a side if potatoes or other choice. The Veal Goulash was on the verge of being too salty. We asked for our check and our waiter even appreciated his generous tip. Will we return...probably not but it is worth the experience. A bit overpriced. Highly recommend booking in advance as we sat by the window and there seemed to be a moderate line. read more

Figlmuller has been open for almost 120 years!! One of Vienna's most iconic restaurants. It is an absolute must on your trip to Vienna. The menu is pretty limited, but let's be real, you only come for the schnitzel. The schnitzel is the size of a basketball. It's massive!! We ordered 2 between 3 of us and honestly should have ordered 1. It is so much food. It is expensive but it feeds a lot so the price makes sense. My only request here is I wish there were better side options with the schnitzel and they shouldn't charge for a side of sauce. read more
Highly recommend!! The schnitzel here is so so good, it's one of the best I've ever had. The potato salad that comes with it is also divine. I also had the fresh grape juice, that I feel like I could've passed on, it tasted like normal grape juice. We also got a beef soup type thing off their traditional menu, it was alright, nothing too special. The line moves quickly outside, we were probably the 8th party or so but we got seated within 30 minutes. Definitely worth the wait! Service is very kind, and it's very nice inside. Yes it is hyped, yes there is a line a mile long - make a reservation! The food was terrific. Their favorite Schnitzel does not disappoint but the real sleeper was the veal goulash for the win. Service is classically European - no nonsense, but very GOOD. 100% will go again. read more
Completely lucked out with the wait. This is the most famous Viennese place to dine for their Schnitzel and potato entre. Worth going! Make a reservation if you can or wait outside to be served one by one -- the line moves very quickly. Loved the experience. read more

I had a great experience at Bäckerstraße location. The atmosphere was classy. I had sourdough bread with butter, Figlmüller-Schnitzel, potato salad and apple strudel. The host and waiter were both professional and helpful. And I'd say that was the best schnitzel experience I ever had. I initially noticed the Figlmüller Wollzeile at Wollzeile 5. This location required a reservation and was full. The host suggested to try the newer location around the corner at Bäckerstraße 6. I'd recommend to make a reservation, as the line for walk-in can take over an hours. read more

First night in Vienna and this was the star! We had Wiener schnitzel, Viennese potato salad and a fabulous gruner veltliner recommended by our server. Service was great and d we loved the food, ambiance and the whole package. read more

The employee brought the tableware and said, 'Nihao,' in an unpleasant tone. I was very offended, so I complained to another employee, but he didn't recognize what was wrong either. We are not Chinese. It is very rude of Westerners to say hi to all Asians, 'Nihao' or 'Gonichiwa'. It was very UNPLEASANT experience. I do not recommend here to all Asians. The food is just pork cutlet flavor and normal. read more
Figlmüller is an established restaurant known for their schnitzel. Of the two locations we went to the Backstreet restaurant as they offer schnitzels that are not solely pork based. This was by far, the best schnitzel on our trip as the veal was pounded thinly and the breading complemented the dish and wasn't overwhelming. To accompany, we ordered some lingonberries which were amazing and some bread. The bread may have been a day or so old as it wasn't very fresh. Definitely a place to go in Vienna for schnitzel as proven by the line that wraps around the corner. If possible, I recommend making a reservation on your own, or with the assistance of a hotel concierge, as we were able to be seated almost moments after we arrived and bypass a 20 person line. read more

Excellent meal, worth the effort to make the reservation. It's not overly expensive and the schnitzel is a massive portion of delicious, tender schnitzel in a super light crust. Two people can absolutely get one schnitzel to share. We didn't get our lingonberry jam, which was sad, but everything else was delicious. Good radler to accompany the meal. read more
Wiener Schnitzel This is good Austrian fare - crisp fresh plate-sized schnitzel with potato salad and cold beer. We tried the Figlmueller (pork) schnitzel and the Wiener (veal) schnitzel - they were both delicious. Come early to avoid a long wait and come hungry!! read more

What I enjoyed: 1) Potatosalad and mini salad What we ordered: 1) Big pork schnitzel (better than the Kalbsschnitzel one) but somehow was boring. It lacked in flavor, sauce or anything else. 2) Kalbsschnitzel. Is more expensive and much smaller and more airy, not as flat. I enjoyed the other one slightly more 3) kaiserschmarn- skip that, it's too sweet, soft dough. Not worth the calories. read more
If you don't have a reservation for the original Figlmüller, they will direct you to this location. The workers are always busy but that should not make up for their disregard for serving customers. It took a while for my friend I to get our menus and to track down our waiter for the bill. Food was pretty good. Food ordered: 1. Schnitzel: 4/5 - this was easy to cut and thinner than I anticipated. I love that the schnitzel was thin and crispy, and paired with a squeeze of lemon, it was refreshing and not heavy. However, personally, it was still a little oily and nothing mind blowing. 2. Potato salad: 5/5 - I love that it is actually scalloped potato with Dijon on one half and actual salad leaves with balsamic on the other side. Mix them together for a delicious and flavorful salad. read more
