Best pizza in Southern California hands down! My family and friends have been coming to Filippis since I was a little girl. Steve is always friendly and has taught his crew well! The hardest part is deciding what to order because everything is great. My personal favorites are a pepperoni pizza with bacon, a works pizza with olives, antipasto salad and mozzarella bread mmm good!! We usually like to come here as a family and enjoy their pizza. We tried going there tonight for dinner with our family around 7:40 and we were turned away from the girl saying we are closed. We left and called asking why they were close and the girl said, because we were busy and the boss said to close. They could not tell me what chianti tastes like. They said their only soup is minestrone which contains beef broth. I said I don't eat animals and they said they don't make the soup, it is sent to them. I asked if I could get 2 salads instead of a soup and salad and they said NO! The food is pretty decent; just like every other Filippis out there. However, what is not great is the customer service. We've been three times, ordered just about the same each time. This past time we ordered a small lettuce and tomato salad. I asked for two dressings; I was not told there was a cost for the second dressing. When we checked out to pay, I simply (and nicely) asked why the salad was a higher cost. The cashier took the bill to our waitress (Lisa) who came storming up to the register and yelled "you got a second dressing, it's $1.40 more; I didn't think I had to tell you two weeks in a row." I obviously looked confused because this woman had not waited on us the week prior. So she continued "I waited on you when you sat at table 9 (like I know where that is!?!?!) and explained it to you then." Now what's funny about this is that yes, Lisa did wait on us three weeks ago...maybe we were at table 9. However, we did not have a salad that night. So, God help the poor person she explained this to then. Because honey, it was not us! The bottom line is that I did not care; I just wanted clarification as to why the salad price was higher on my ticket than what the menu reflected. Had I been explained this in a calmer manner, I would have said "great, I'll know for next time." But, since Lisa felt the need to talk down to me, Filippis has lost out on a customer and you best be sure I'll share this story with whoever will listen. If you have ever ate at the location in Little Italy DO NOT even give this location a try. It doesn't even come close. For dinner my wife and I ordered a pepperoni pizza, spaghetti and meatballs, and a small antipasto. The meatballs were as dense as a softball, there were so bad my dog didn't even eat them. The antipasto was drenched in water and was about 3/4 meat and cheese with little lettuce. It made me and my wife look at it and say, "what the *!#$!" I found this food to be so bad that I drove 30 minutes back to the Jamul restaurant from Chula Vista just to get my money back. Don't waste your time and money here. read more

First off, let me start by saying I usually don't review on Yelp unless it's exceptionally good (5) or extremely bad (1), but I'm making an exception with this Filippis for a number of reasons. First off, the level quality level and choices for "Italian" food in this area of SD are very limited, and being an Italian American, NY transplant, my expectations may be a bit different than your average SD native, especially when it pertains to pizza. Here we go..... The clientele of this place is basically what you'd expect for an Italian restaurant, located essentially in the middle of nowhere. 99% white "trashy" looking individuals, this is definitely not fine dining or a place you'd want to take a first date, unless you both just got done at the gun range or came from a clan meeting. The place itself looks old and not renovated anytime in the last 20 years, and the dining rooms have an odd setup, with a number of dusty, strangely placed empty Chianti bottles hanging from everywhere. Unusual artwork and photos of random pictures of Italy, more like you'd expect in a travel agency, versus a restaurant. The staff are all very young and inexperienced, seem overworked, somewhat unhappy and not very professional in their presentation or maintaining any particular standard of service. Some even look "sickly", expressionless and devoid of anything that makes you feel as if you're anything more, than just the next "task" that they need to attend too. My particular server was nice enough, but she was clearly overwhelmed and constantly would repeat to all her tables, "I'm very sorry about the wait, thanks for your patience ". True to form, it did a little long for the food to come out, but nothing horrible for a Saturday night with a full parking lot. But clearly, the order delivery system they use isn't effective and judging by the presentation of the front of house staff, you are left to wonder who is cooking your food in the back, and whether they are following proper hygiene and food preparation protocols. The menu is odd and small, and strangely lacking many traditional Italian dishes, and seems to squarely focus upon these large meatballs, which I'm assuming are supposed to be the house specialty, in addition to the pizza. I would greatly encourage you to not order any other meat, which only seemed to include a chicken parm dish, based on observations of other patrons. The meatball itself was large, but at $2.95 per, was overcooked, tasteless and frankly not very good. The pasta also seemed cheap and not much too it except being dowsed in a red sauce that is also nothing special, and definitely not fresh tasting. The pizza crust was okay, crisp, relatively good taste, but they use a huge amount of cheese, which kind of makes you wonder if they are compensating for a lack of fresh ingredients, and again, the sauce is very "canned" tasting. The pizza overall, I can't say is horrible, but at $16.95 for a medium / $19 for a large sausage and pepperoni, its a little overpriced in my opinion. They also charge you $2.95 just to have a small loaf of bread and butter to snack on while you wait, which is kind of ridiculous considering your going to be sitting there for at least 15-20 minutes before any food, and also makes you question, do they really need to charge you 3 bucks for bread, and immediately reminds you , you are not a guest of this "grotto", just another dollar ringing tab. Not very Italian...... In summation, if you like things dowsed in bland sauce and overtly amounts of cheese and call that "Italian food", I guess it's okay, but don't expect much. The credit card machine broke and they left us sitting at the table for 20 minutes, basically, uncomfortably ignoring us. When I approached the 18 year cashier, she abruptly said " you need to wait, our machine is down and I have to run it manually ", to which I replied...."ok, do that now, I've been waiting 20 minutes and would like to leave now and bring home my 6 year old". This was not received well to say the least. Again, emphasizing what you're getting into here. I would not recommend this place , except as maybe a take out pizza play if you're hungry and live out there where the expectations seem low and options limited. read more

It took about 10 mins for someone to come take our order... 25 mins to receive our food... not once did they come to ask if we needed anything. This rating is for Filippi's pizza and their pizza alone. Why? Because there is no pizza like Filippi's pizza!!! At most Italian restaurants, I can eat half or more of a pizza by myself yet I am literally stuffed after eating just one piece of Filippi's pizza. They do not scrimp... My family was so excited to try the new location down the road from the old one. What a difference the move made - in a bad way! The new location is horribly designed, sterile and depressing. I'm not sure who came up with the layout of this place, but they should have their architecture license revoked (or more likely have their crayons taken away). There is a cute little area outside with grass that the kids enjoyed running in, but the giant rodent traps in that area were a bit of a turn off. Although the new location lacked the several layers of dust that the old one had, I'm sure it's only a matter of time before that is the same. The floor was filthy. The busboy "cleaned" after a patron by wiping all the crumbs to the floor. Our table had silverware, pizza bits and more under it - ew! The food is the same as the old place. It's still not my favorite Filippi's as far as food goes, but it's fine. And the service was pretty bad too. What a bummer! read more

She didn't have the patience for me, and passed me to another waitress to take my order. So rude. Have been coming here for years. Weirdest experience ever! We have ordered the Vegetarian Pizza a ton of times and it's always been served hot with lots of ooey gooey melted cheese on top. So tonight, when it was brought to the table, we were surprised that instead of a gooey cheese topping, the pizza was armored by a layer of hardened coagulated cheese that could be peeled back like a bed sheet. We've never been served a pizza "hot out of the oven" as described by the waitress that could be placed directly on the table. Not surprising it was barely warm. So when we were asked how was our diner, we expressed our displeasure. The weird part. They took our pizza away, and returned with a bill for the wine. Essentially, hurry up and get out. No offer of "would you like something else". Just here's your bill. We were hungry and had driven 10 miles to get there. All we wanted was hot pizza. I'm so mad at myself for not trying this place sooner. It is rare to find a spot where the food and service are equally amazing, this is that rare place. We got a large cheese with bell pepper which seemed to be enough to feed an army, ok not really, but maybe a small village, ok a family of 4 - 8, yes depending on how greedy you are. Crust was perfect, sauce was flavorful, cheese was tasty and not super greasy, bell peppers were fresh and juicy. Overall experience, if my tummy had thumbs it would give it 2 thumbs up. I just left this place and never been so offended in my life. I took my family to eat and they sit us quickly but our server went missing. Me and my family are Hispanic We waited for about 20 minutes and another white couple was seated as soon as they were seated there server was right on it. I told my family to get up and go I tried talking to the hostess about who I can talk to to fix my problem but she gave me no answers she whispered to the manager and didn't say anything to me then walked off spoke to another person then asked me if I wanted to talk to the manager I looked at her and said no thanks and left. My family and I have been going to this location since I was a child. It used to be an amazing location and we never had a bad experience. AYSO, TBall, Birthday, all sorts of parties since I was a child. After the move to the new location it has all been downhill from there. I here from many Jamulians that the place kinda sucks. The inside is too bright, chintzy, and crowded. If you look at the recent Yelp reviews it reflects all the issues. I got a Pizza Sunday night. It was date night with me and my chick. We also rented a movie. Once we got home and popped the movie in we opened the pizza and everything looked a little off right away. The crust wasn't as large and puffy as usual but we didn't mind much. Pulled the pizza out and the bottom crust of the pizza was 1/8 in thick and the cheese was about a 1/2 thick. The crust was hard and the bottom of the pizza so thin it got soggy by the time we ate our second piece. We were already into the movie and decided to just watch the rest and deal with it later. When I called back to explain my frustration and get the issues resolved some how they gave the phone to the owner, Steve. Steve immediately was talking to me like I am some sort of child trying to explain to me about pizza tossing and dough spreading. Say what you want, ALL the other locations I have been too the pizza has come out exactly the same. He asked me to BRING THE PIZZA BACK and he will give me my money back. I have never heard of any place doing that before. I told him there was only a few pieces left and id be glad to take a picture and show him. He said there is nothing they can do and that I wouldn't get credit unless I brought the pizza back. I said I am on a date night with my girlfriend and I am not going to leave to do that. To add insult to injury he said I could come back that night but their closed. He would give me my money back. I asked why he couldn't do that over the phone because I live 20 min away and he said because "he wont". After arguing a bit I told him my family and I will stop coming back to that location and I shit you not Steve the Dbag said "Good". My family owns restaurants all over Southern California and let me say this with confidence. This location will slowly go under if they keep this up. Terrible customer service and terrible pizza. Not only does Jamul RULE, they have the greatest Filippi's Pizza Grotto hands down. I know people that come out from Vista to go there. Every time I'm in SD, I'll grab a pizza and take it back North. I eat it for breakfast, and I will put the hurt on you if you take a piece without my knowledge. I will make you drive back to Jamul specifically to buy me a new pizza. one star because of how polite the servers were. otherwise, would've been zero. i placed my order to-go ahead of time at 5:00. ordered their spaghetti, a small pizza, a salad, and some garlic bread. it was already well 6:00 when i got my food, and the order said it would be ready by 5:35. the spaghetti didn't taste as good as i thought it would. the noodles were over cooked and tasted like plastic. pretty much tasted like it was out of a can. we ordered a small pizza with pepperoni and ham. the pepperoni was stacked at least an inch together, hardly spread apart. the dough was as hard as cardboard, and the cheese was so much. it was overly greasy and not enjoyable at all. the salad was sad. they cut a tomato into 4 chunks. the pieces were huge. they just threw on 4 peppers on top with 4 giant pieces of tomato. the garlic bread was cardboard as well and very stiff. had some garlic flavor but other than that, there wasn't really much to go crazy for. it was pretty expensive as well. probably to compensate for lack of business. family and i were disappointed. local eats around here are pretty good but i wouldn't recommend coming here. probably won't ever come here to eat again. read more

The star is for the food only. Typical Filippis fare. Regarding this particular location, order the takeout. Don't bother eating there. It's in a stark industrial building, and your ambiance consists of a barbed wire covered brick wall outside the bare windows, interrogation friendly lighting that will blind you, and bare white walls. Oh sure, they went all out and put in some wood lattice between 'section's, red/white checked plastic tablecoverings and a red tile floor. Just like your standard hole in the wall strip mall takeout joint. I THINK the floor was red..........hard to tell with all the food strewn all over it. The place was empty, and I know why. Zero atmosphere and dirty to boot. If the place was at least clean............I am surprised the De Filippi family has gotten so lazy. I guess they figured quantity was more important than quality in their rush to stock the state with Filippis locations. They're just mailing it in at this point. I think the founders of this family restaurant would be ashamed at what their grandchildren are settling for. In my opinion, this locale alone sullies the name. Their standards have plummeted. The staff, having time on their hands with an empty restaurant, should have made sure that the 3 families in there didn't have to look at food strewn all over the floor, and picked up the filthy restrooms. It doesn't take much to push a damn broom around every once in a while instead of waiting till the end of the night to bother with it. read more

Fillipi's Jamul is the best individual restaurant in the Fillipi's chain. Last time I went here with my girlfriend we ordered the small salad (serves 2) and a medium Hawaiian style pizza. The small salad is good but a bit too small for 2 people. So if you love salad get the large - it's not only bigger but actually has many more ingredients (including kidney beans, broccoli, tomato and olives). The pizza was excellent, loaded with pounds of cheese and fresh ingredients. While it didn't look enormous, our Hawaiian was actually so packed with toppings that the medium was more than enough for us. This place is great as a neighborhood spot. When you don't want to drive out of your area or if the place is in walking distance. Staff is friendly and prices are reasonable. For my money though I'd rather go to La Bella's. I can vividly remember La Bella's pizza but find Fillippi's to be bland and forgettable. read more

I have been to many of the Filippi's in and out of the county -- Little Italy, Poway, Temecula, PB -- and now have the pleasure of visiting this location. It's a bit out there, I'm not gonna lie. But if you live even remotely east it's worth the trip. The antipasto is the best I've ever had. I can't stop thinking about it. More meat that the any of the other Filippi's, heck, more meat than any other Italian restaurant, a great olive and tomato mix on top and this super good red wine vinaigrette. We've been customers forever it seems and visited the old building more times than I can count. Although the food and people remains tops, the new place just doesn't have any of the Filippi's personality. Curses on whoever designed the new layout. TOTALLY BLOWN AWAY.... I have been going here for YEARS, and thought I knew the owner well enough to call myself a regular here. Sunday night, the owner of this place knocked me right out of my sox with an incident. Over the years, I have been here at least 100 times literally. I had just brought 10 people to dine in a week ago. NEVER have I had a problem. The service and food were always decent. It is the only Italian food in Jamul which is a pretty small community in rural east county. My parents, friends, neighbors, all of us go here. Three night ago, I called in an order. It consisted of a half gallon of pasta sauce, an order of garlic bread and an order of TWO meatballs (which I love). They are baseball size almost and are about 2.50/$3 bucks each. I get the order home, wife fixes me a plate, I eat it and realize there was only one meatball in the tray (none left at this point). NO BIG DEAL. I wasn't bummed because I was full. But figuring I'm a Jamul local, and repeat customer (for years and years), I'd call Steve and let him know what happened. He says, "I saw my helper put two in the tray". Set back, I said NO he only put one.... Steve puts me on hold for FIVE MINUTES and never comes back. I hang up and call back, and he answer the phone "hello?" I asked is this Filippi's? He says yeah, the guy put two. I saw him.... We began to argue and he tells me to come back and get a meatball or get my money back (I was charged for two). This was ridiculous. I'm going to get back in my car and drive down a mountain for a meatball on a Sunday night at 9PM? NO.... I thought I could grab one the next day on the way home. I drive by every day and wasn't feeling horrible about this until he accuses me of being a liar and that he was done with me. I have known this guy for 23 years and this is the way he treats people! I could not believe the size of his ego. He goes on to tell me that in 23 years of business his whole place has only made 5 mistakes EVER... Then I knew he was loosing it. Anyways, He was always polite and everything was always cool, UNTIL IT WASN'T. He sacrificed a life long customer over A STUPID MEATBALL that cost 50 cents to make!!!!!! So watch out. The guys is moody, egotistical, and will not admit error. Make a small mistake, no biggie. Call the customer a liar and fire me when I paid for what I DID NOT GET? That's ridiculous..... Sorry for the long story about a meatball. Plain and simple, if a guy owns a dining establishment and treats customers of 20 plus years like this, he or she should retire RIGHT NOW..... I have lived in Jamul, CA since 2001 and used to have pizza delivered from another place, until I realized we have a Filippi's!!! It is so worth the 'pick up' drive time, and Steve the Manager is very personable and friendly. I always take my out of town friends to our Jamul Filippi's and they talk about it for weeks after they get back home. One good friend comes to visit from Mississippi 1x a year, at least, and special requests we go to Filippi's always!! My husband will not eat pizza or any other dishes,..lasagna, ravioli, etc.., from any other place!!! I just ordered a medium pepproni & sausage pizza with a small dinner salad on the side..
