Dined here last night, waitress had a difficult time for some reason to keep my water glass filled. Had to keep asking for more water. My wife had the Lobster Ravioli , and I had the Spaghetti Bolognese. Both dishes were absolute garbage. Chef Boyardee out of a can would taste much better than the Spaghetti Bolognese. I'm gonna refrain from commenting on the Lobster Ravioli dish. I motioned to my server to come to the table since she wasn't paying very little attention to our table the whole meal. When she finally came to the table, I handed her my dish and I told her this is terrible and she looked at me with a deer in the headlights stare. I said take it off the bill and she left. The wifey and I decided to go out for some cocktails and dinner locally and we picked Garbatella which is located in the Otay Ranch Mall. The parking was plentiful unlike going to downtown or Hillcrest, or North Park, or Convoy. We went early enough where we didn't have to deal with a crowded restaurant. We started off with our obligatory Old Fashioneds which were delicious. Wifey then got a Oaxacan Old Fashioned which was also delicious. As far as food we started with their calamari which also included some shrimp and a nice cocktail sauce. The calamari and shrimp were very nicely fried and had very nice flavor. Let's go from start to finish. Service: 0.1/5 Ambience: 3/5 Food: 3/5 (might as well go to Little Italy for the pricing and better service) To be clear, I did try reaching out via Instagram before writing this review and never heard back. I decided to take my parents out for their 38-year anniversary, and they chose to try the place I've been telling them about Garbatella. My birthday is also the day before their anniversary, so this dinner was meant to be special. We walked in at 5:15 PM after seeing on the website that Happy Hour was from 3:00-5:30 PM. Our reservation was at 5:45 PM, so we wanted to catch the end of HH. We stood there for almost five minutes without being greeted, which in any restaurant for a guest is a long time. When we were finally acknowledged, the server already seemed irritated by our existence. We told her we had a 5:45 PM reservation but wanted to enjoy Happy Hour and asked if we should order at the bar or if we could do it at the table. She completely ignored the question, sat us, and handed us regular menus. When I asked again, she said HH was already over. I mentioned the website says 5:30 PM--and at that point it was only 5:22 PM. She responded that it actually ends at 5:00 PM and that the website is outdated. She then seated us directly between the only two other tables in an otherwise empty restaurant, so there was no sense of space or privacy. Again, if it was a full house totally understand but it was practically vacant. Trying to laugh past it, we ordered drinks and bread. The bread came out before the drinks--which is a restaurant SIN. When I tried to order the Pappardelle Rione (a dish I've ordered here many times and is still listed online), she told me they no longer have it and again said the website is old. I asked if there was anything similar or if the kitchen could make something close, and she pointed me to roast beef with mashed potatoes... after I had clearly said I wanted pasta. She rushed through taking the rest of our order, and I already felt like an inconvenience. Mind you, there were only three tables in the entire restaurant. She could have tried to meet me in the middle on an item but acted as if she had no time to deal with my order or make any suggestions per my requests. Two minutes after ordering, I decided to switch to the bolognese with burrata--just to stick with pasta like I originally wanted. She told me they had already started my dish and that changing it would be an additional charge. At that point, with the inconsistencies in HH timing, outdated website menu, seating, and overall attitude, I just said to add it to the bill. Since we all know she wanted to rack it up at that point or to shut me up basically. I've worked in the industry for some time now and not ignorant to servers antics. Both of my entrees came out. The meatballs were likely microwaved, the burrata was missing, and the roast beef with mashed potatoes was nothing special. Couldn't be that fresh if it came out that quickly is all I'm saying. My Coke was empty by the time the food arrived, and she never once offered a refill. Eventually, my mom had to flag down another younger server to get drinks. When our original server finally came back, we ordered tiramisu. My refill came barely before dessert was dropped. She then completely disappeared to chat with another table. No acknowledgment of our celebration, no dessert gesture for my parents' anniversary -- NOTHING. I actually had to get up from the table to find her so I could pay. She seemed uncomfortable when she realized I was the one paying--and tipping. I typically tip 20-30%, but this was the first time I've ever left 10%. She didn't even provide me with a copy of the receipt after saying she would. I have never felt more brushed off by a server in my life. Didn't get her name. She was older, dark hair, heavy eyeliner, and cold unwelcoming demeanor. What happened to good customer service? Don't know if it was our race, my age (much younger), or if we just caught her on a bad day. Either way would not recommend due to the inconsistencies of the times, menus, and service. Ordered a second helping of that, we had the lobster ravioli, and the lasagna with the Caesar salad and for dessert I had the pistachio cake. I think that's what it was called . and some kind of lemon cake super good. They're bartender was the server so he was really busy so it's understood. This place has some of the most genuine and delicious tiramisu I've ever had, so I've gone back a few times specifically for it. The last couple of times they were sold out, but I have to give a huge shoutout to Val for how she handled everything. I've also been here a few times in person, including for Valentine's Day, and it's always such a beautiful and romantic atmosphere. The music, ambiance, and overall experience make it such a lovely place for a date. She was genuinely so sweet and helpful, and she went above and beyond to make things right. She even explained that the tiramisu takes a day to make and recommended what day I should order so I wouldn't run into the same issue again. When I ordered today, she remembered me and even included an extra piece of tiramisu for me. I really appreciated how much she cared about making sure I had a good experience. You can tell when someone genuinely values their customers, and Val definitely does. I found out there's a reason why this place gets knocked for wait time. I was seated promptly, but I waited over 20 minutes even making eye contact with a server who kept walking. One table beside me seemed to be ok with service as their food arrived, and another couple next to me looked like they had finished their meal and were waiting to pay. I made a reservation two weeks ago through OpenTable for March 1 at 12:30 PM to celebrate my grandma's 90th birthday, with family traveling in from Los Angeles and the East Coast. Tonight (the night before), I received a call saying their hours had changed and they could no longer accommodate our reservation time. They mentioned the hours were updated a week or two ago, which makes it even more frustrating that we weren't notified sooner. Also, Apple Maps and Open Table both had the outdated hours listed when booking and 5 minutes ago. While they offered a later time, that isn't possible due to flights and travel schedules. This caused unnecessary stress for a meaningful family celebration and reflects very poor planning and communication. For the appetizers, we got the 1/2 dozen oysters off the happy hour menu and the calamari fritti. For the main course we ordered the salmon with Parmesan risotto and the shrimp vodka pasta. Oysters tasted fresh and calamari with shrimp was seasoned perfectly and had great texture. The salmon had great flavor and the risotto was perfectly al dente and creamy. The vodka pasta was amazing. Calamari: 2/10-under-seasoned and overcooked and chewy. Grilled Octopus: 2/10-very dry and the octopus was under-seasoned. Fettuccine with shrimp: 8/10-this dish was delicious, I know it's not the most traditionally Italian dish but it was very good all around. Braised short rib: 8/10: braise on the meat was good and Brussels gave the dish a nice smokyness. Gianluca pizza: 7/10- it was ok. Crust was nice but it could use more sauce. Otherwise very average pizza. Desserts: Pistachio ricotta cake: 8/10- good, not too sweet. Chocolate cake: 5/10-not too sweet but served very hard. But, the acoustics are pretty bad, the design is very mixed and has no real flow. Different tiling and colors throughout. It's like there was a deal on some of the materials used. After only going there for breakfast maybe 4-5 times, happy with the steak and drinks, I thought I'd try the pizza that the patrons talked about. The stock of tour sea bass are pungent smells weird already. There was live music Saturday night which was a nice touch. Other than that I just wasn't super impressed. The scallops were good, just really small. The braised beef was lacking something that I can't quite put my finger on. It wasn't a deal breaker, overall it was good but it was just kindof meh. It didn't help that the description said it included brussels sprouts and there were literally 3 or 4. Service wasn't great. Granted - we sat at the bar. But other patrons were very well tended to and we felt ignored. It took forever to get our check, and the bartender took one of our plates with half of the food still on it.
