Best hardware store in the Financial District! You can barely find another hardware store here unless you find one in another district. My supervisor and some of my colleagues went to the favorite hardware store to buy products like plinks and batteries to make our workplace run smoothly. Maria and the remaining staff have given us a warm welcome with a smile. Not as big as ACE Hardware, I could still buy what's good for my bedroom, and that's the LED light bulbs. Last night, my family and I witnessed a blackout in our neighborhood, and it's never the first time. We each have our own flashlights that came in handy in case the blackout happens again. The light bulbs that my parents once have won't last that long. So, I thought I would buy the ones that last say 22 or more years. For eye comfort, I chose the long, scrawny bulb that would last up to 13 years. The amber light was good for when I study during night time. Hopefully, Philips won't let me down. I might come to Hardware Financial District only to purchase products based on my dad's home repairs. But flashlights and batteries are what we need in case the blackout happens. Walking through the Financial District these days is a pretty lonely experience. Fortunately there's an island of friendly helpful people and they work at Financial District Hardware. I suppose as much for security reasons as anything, staff are standing at the door to open it, greet you, and direct you to the exact isle where sought after items can be found. Of course if they don't have your item, they'll tell you that too so you don't 'waste anytime, but that's rarely been the case. The store is convenient to my home and all 14 people working in the Financial District, and I'm able to get in and out quickly, making my shopping experience a breeze. The only negative I can think of is that the prices are a bit more expensive than the box stores but the helpful service and convenience more than make up for the prices. Oh, and if you are thinking of driving there - don't. Overall, Financial District Hardware offers exceptional customer service and a great selection of products. While it may be a bit more expensive, the convenience and fantastic service more than make up for the prices. I would highly recommend this store to anyone in the area. read more

I was in need of a place to replicate my new apartment keys & my co worker recommended Ace on Pine St. I chose different color keys for different locks so it would be easy to differentiate. Since then, I've visited multiple times for hardware needs. For a little shop, they carry a lot. Just ask their knowledgeable & helpful staff for guidance. Prices are very reasonable. I came here looking for one screw for my boot. I know this may seem weird going to a hardware store for a boot but my boot had this screw that held in a piece of leather around the ankle that fell off. I went to Ace looking for the 1 screw and was helped by (I think her name is Maria) who found the perfect screw for the boot! She knew that being a woman how important it is for our boots to look cute :) I also came in looking for new screws for a Nambe fruit bowl. The screws that came with the bowl did not fit and as a result the stand was wobbly. A nice gentleman helped me find the right screws and helped me fix the bowl. Customer service here reminds me being in a small town and the local hardware store knows all of their customers. You don't find that kind of service often in a big city. Friendly service, helpful and direct with the information you need. Got some falcon keys and a mail key copied while I got some batteries. They were quick in responding to my email a couple days prior. Brought my stroller in and they had someone help open the door when entering and exiting. I never would have expected to have such a pleasant shopping experience at Ace Hardware! First, when I asked if Ruggles (my dog) could come in, the immediate response was "of course!!!" Next, when I asked where to find paint brushes, the friendly cashier directed me straight too them. On my way to the paint brushes, I noticed that the store was so clean and well-organized! It almost didn't feel like a hardware store... you almost could have eaten off of those clean floors! Well, Ruggles would have liked to anyway... As I walked to the counter with my paint brushes and what I thought was painter's tape (hey, it was in the paint brush aisle!), everyone pet and oohed and aahed at Ruggles. He loves when he elicits that response! When I asked if I'd picked up the correct tape, the cashier politely directed me to the blue painter's tape in another aisle. Then, she rang me up and encouraged Ruggles to jump up on the counter so she could pet him and say good-bye. Then she let us know that he was more than welcome to come back any time! read more

I always have such a pleasant experience when I come to this store. They have the best customer service I've ever experienced at a hardware store (I'm talking to YOU, Home Depot and Lowes! Tisk, tisk). The moment I walk in, I'm immediately greeted and asked if I need help finding something. So I'm usually able to get in and out of there in 5 minutes because they're so helpful that I don't waste time searching the aisles. They're a smaller store but they carry alot of the more common items you might need. For example, I've gone in for light bulbs, plastic zip ties, and to get spare keys made. Just random stuff. It's so convenient to have a place like this downtown. It cuts down on my after-work errand running time :) read more

I've been coming here for years and this store has always been a five star store. The folks at the counter are always super helpful. When you work right in the middle of San Francisco's financial district and you need a tool, nut, bolt , rain suit, battery, copper or brass fitting, and I could go on forever. No store has everything but I lean on this one because 99 percent of the time they have exactly what I need. The job gets completed and I get to be a hero. I found real stainless steel solar path lights here for $2.99/ea. These are the same price as Target's cheap dinky ones. The clerk who rang me up swore that it lasts a long time. We'll see. However I do have to say their solar lights are cheaper than Walgreen's. Friendly service. It's no wonder why they are still in business! read more

After work yesterday (02.28.11), I went into Ace Hardware on Pine St. I required two things. The first was a solution for patching two small holes in an air mattress. The second was a small vacuum cleaner. Very quickly, I was asked if I required assistance. I wish I knew his name. I would give him props. I told him what I was seeking. He quickly identified a solution for my repair needs and then answered my questions about the vacuums. Within about 15 minutes, I was in and out with both solutions. Amazingly helpful staff. I had a ton of keys to copy for work and Maria took it upon herself to make sure my keys stayed organized and were easily identifiable. The job was a little bit bigger than most and so she got my number and called me when it was done, to come pick up. All said and done, it was done in less than an hour, and done absolutely perfectly. Been to Ace Hardware a couple of times to get duplicate keys cut Each time, it took mere minutes. They're cool w/ you waiting or leaving & coming back - whatever is more convenient for you. Great Ace Hardware location. Pure and simple. So I work in the FiDi (ugh did I really just call it that?) and I was in search of place where I could take in our office keys and have a new set made for a new employee, and I wanted it done fast and cheap (that's what she said?) After reading the other reviews I decided to give Ace Hardware a try. i was in and out of there in less than 3 minutes, really. I walked in, asked an employee where I should go to get keys made and she kindly pointed me right towards the frint desk. Another employee took my key, asked for my name, and told me the keys would be ready in 5 minutes. Ummmmm ... awesome?! So my new fellow coworker and I walked not more than 3 doors down to the Subway to grab a soda and by the time we walked back *BLAMMY* my keys were done. Wow. Now that is service. Granted I don't live downtown, I'm a Sunset kid, so I won't be frequenting this Ace Hardware all that often. But if I'm ever at work or downtown and need some keys made or some nails or painters tape, I will most defnitely be returning to this Ace Hardware, if you live or work in the area I would highly reccommend it. read more

The staff is friendly and informative. I went in to make copies of keys and picked up a bottle of Simply Green All-Purpose Cleaner. When I got to the register, the woman pointed out the display of Clorox's new biodegradable, green All-Purpose Cleaner. The Clorox version was a good $4 less! She asked me what I need cleaner for and proceeded to give instructions on how to thoroughly clean my mini-fridge that had defrosted and now stinks, and she pretty much insisted I get the Clorox because Simply Green was for grease jobs. Weird location but glad they were here, little pricey but when you need it and your downtown this is the place to go. They have free pop corn too! I love this one. I love the women who own and run it (yay for girls with power tools other than ones that start with V and end in -ator) and it's super close to my office. I came in today at what I hoped was the post-lunch time around 1:15 to get 2 keys made. (Thank you fellow yelpers for helping me find this place because a hardware store in the FiDi? I wouldn't have known it existed!) Unfortunately, it seems every one else had the same idea and they told me it would be about 15 minutes. The woman at the counter was not nearly as friendly as everyone said, in fact, I thought she was pretty rude, which is the only reason I subtracted a star. But I mean, at the end of the day they are keys and if they work that's what I came in for, not to chit chat. I went out to pick up something to eat and came back what I guess to be about 10 minutes later. There was a young guy this time who was extremely friendly and asked if I needed help finding anything. I am the chief engineer of a couple of commercial properties in the financial district. Let me just say, that when you're main customer base consists of guys like me, you better be on top of your game. The staff of this store consistently exceeds the mark for both friendliness, and knowledge of their products, with an amazing selection crammed into such a small little place. Only bummer is they're not open on the weekends. But then, this is the financial district after all, and nothing is open on the weekends. Ever. read more

Why does it cost so much to get keys made? $2.49 each for your regular household key. Staff is friendly, wait is 10 min (why can't you make it NOW, no one is there?). Plenty of other places you can take your keys to get copied cheaper. read more

This place is small, but everything you need is here. The people here are always so nice and helpful. I came in here twice and both times there was only one person working the entire store. she was helping customers and duplicating keys and ringing customers out. That was just amazing. When our office needs anything, we just run downstairs. Screwdrivers, check! Coat rack, check! sponges, check! and the best thing is that they don't care that you're in there browsing and not buying anything. We went in for some paint samples and left and they were still smiling. that IS customer service. TIP: Behind Safeway receipts are coupons for this ACE Hardware. Extra cool! read more

I love this store b/c of it's convenience. I can stop into this Ace on my way to Muni and fit most things I buy into my UGLY BLACK WORK TOTE. This Ace is perfect for those little odd things you need for your home that can't wait for the weekend trip to Target or Home Depot. Since they would know better than I would, I'll have to go back by there at some point and check it out. Don't know them by name but there are these two super nice (and smart) women who work there. Come here for keys, nuts and bolts, and such. They are pretty small so don't go there looking for large tools and such. Still pretty Incredible for it's size.
