I switched from another…read morecardiologist's office that was initiating a "boutique" or "concierge" billing system of $1500 to $2500 per year to have better access (email & cell phone), and quicker responses. This did not cover office visits, labs, or anything medical, which would still be charged per item. I told Richard Taw of this & he said that he didn't have such a billing system. That turned out to be untrue. Soon I learned that he had an "optional" concierge system costing $650/year for better & frequent access. After a number of office visits & different scans, it was determined that I needed open-heart surgery. I chose to go with a Cedars-Sinai surgeon, Dr. Khoynezhad, who specialized in aorta repair. A couple months after the surgery, the Cedars-Sinai surgical team, figuratively speaking, handed me over to Taw for monitoring & continuing cardio check-ups. So far, so good. I was in Taw's office for some records or billing reason & mentioned that I needed to ask a couple of questions about how much longer I needed to take 2 meds & when I could start exercising. The staff said that could be answered easily via phone or email if I joined the $650/year club. Otherwise I had to schedule an office visit to ask those 2 questions. I had also been encouraged on previous visits to join this $650 club, but demurred. I made an appt & came back the very next day. 5 to 8 minutes with the doc & those 2 questions (the only questions) were answered. I got the bill later. The AMA has billing codes to define & guide billing. A 99214 Level 4 Comprehensive Visit (out of 5 levels of Office Visits) includes a 1) detailed medical history, 2) detailed medical exam, & 3) medical decision that entails moderate complexity. The severity of the problem must be moderate to high. The doctor/patient face time allows up to 25 minutes. This Level 4 exam was billed at $125; whereas lower level exams involved smaller charges going down to approx. $44 for a Level 2 10-minute exam. Medicare determines billing, & scamming them is fraud. I asked the counter staff why this 2 question 5-8 minutes was Level 4. They said it was the doctor's decision & I only noticed it now because it was January, my yearly deductible hadn't been met, & thus I was paying most of the $125. Otherwise if my deductible had already been met, I wouldn't have noticed the charge. Did my unmet deductible make this overcharge right or ethical? Since the so-called "exam" did not involve any of the 3 requirements, did not involve a medical decision of "moderate complexity", and didn't come close to 25 minutes, to me this was a scam to bill as much as he might get away, and most patients wouldn't know which way was up. While I contemplated this scam or overcharge (my opinion) for a couple of weeks, a dentist was going to do a root-canal & requested a medical clearance from my cardiologist. He refused to cooperate! I phoned him and explained that I was perplexed. Richard Taw said the dentist wanted me to stop taking the blood-thinner med (Plavix) before the root-canal, & Taw DIDN'T "UNDERSTAND THE QUESTION", whether it meant to stop taking the med forever or just before the root canal. WHAT? I understood this basic question. Taw then detoured to the concept that he couldn't comment on the surgeon's prescription that I take the blood thinner after my surgery. I said that was nonsense for two reasons. 1st, the surgeon handed over my continuing medical care to the cardiologist, Richard Taw after a couple of months. This was now 3.5 months later. 2nd, Taw had already commented on the meds & told me that I didn't have to take the blood thinner after 3 months passed, which was 2 weeks previous. In addition, 3 weeks previously, another dentist needed to do an implant, and it took 2 weeks of repeated contacts and cajoling to get Taw's office to give a medical clearance for that. It was tough getting it, but he did give a medical clearance already for the dental implant. Apparently, Taw didn't like to have to do extra coordination (or paperwork) with the dentist unless I joined his $650/year club. To enforce this, Taw was simply going to refuse to cooperate and refused to give necessary and required medical services. Notice, I did not append the preface "Doctor" before Taw once. That implies a level of respect and professionalism that I believe R. Taw doesn't have. For self-entitlement, Taw gets a 5. However, self-entitlement is a negative. For professionalism, Taw gets 0 stars, but Yelp only goes down to 1 star. I ended my last phone call (requesting the medical clearance for my dentist) by telling Taw he was "fired". I don't want self-entitled individuals thinking that their patients simply faded away or switched doctors. He was fired for a lack of ethics & sense of responsibility.

Since my workup I have stayed in touch with his office and found that he and his staff are following - - with apparently great success - - the Esselstyn Regimen: eating differently by eating a plant based diet. Dr. Taw, who is a long term runner and seemingly healthy person, has committed to the new heart-healthy discipline, along with other people in his office, and they all have dramatic results in terms of better cholesterol numbers and considerable weight loss. Other cardiologists MAY mention diet changes but Dr. Taw actually practices plant based eating HIMSELF and can counsel his patients, as he did me, on how and WHY to change the way we eat. He puts his money where his mouth is. Because of his influence I have lost weight and dropped my cholesterol to below 100, TOTAL! I feel much better and I found that the eating plan is very doable. His office staff have developed recipes and their whole approach is truly life changing. So, suffice it to say that Dr. Taw has probably saved my life. I guarantee that he has extended my life. She seemed like she actually wanted to help and was concerned about making sure that everything with me was OK. I found her to be very nice & personable. Not only that, but she was very knowledgeable not just in her area of medicine but in other areas. She made several comments/suggestions about my family medical history, my treatment at the fertility center, and about a cyst on my back that proved to me that she is very knowledgeable about all kinds of medicine. My previous doctor never even mentioned nor checked several things that she did. In fact my previous doctor never asked me anything about my personal or family medical history, my infertility treatments, my pregnancy, or my PCOS diagnosis at all! He would just come in, after having me waiting 1 hour, and talk to me for 30 seconds, then call a nurse to take my blood. Not at all the case here.. What a difference! I walked out of there feeling VERY impressed and I wish she could be my doctor for everything. I also found the front desk staff to be very friendly although it can get very crowded there because there are alot of doctors they are managing the front desk for. The procedure for giving bloodwork is a little different than I was used to over at Cedars. Here, you have to go downstairs to 1 room to register, and then go to another room to have the blood drawn. But it didn't take TOO long to do, and the results come back fast so I am grateful for that. My previous doctor would never call me with results and when I would call when they were finally ready 1-2 weeks later, they wouldn't give them to me over the phone. The doctor would have to call me back but he would never leave it over voicemail, and I usually missed his calls, which got annoying. Here, they told me the the results would be ready 2-3 days later and I could just call to get them.

She knew what she was talking about. She was very concerned about making the issue cost as little as possible for me. My insurance sucks right now, and office visits cost an arm and a leg. So I've been able to communicate with the office solely by telephone for follow-ups every couple months. It's hard to find competent, unharried doctors nowadays. She's one of them.

Dr. Levine was referred by the current primary doctor that I am seeing. He was very pleasnt, professional & asked appropriate medical history questions. I'm a long time St. John's Health Center patient. He said he would go on to their website to view the results of the of the most recent lab work. Dr. Levine suggested that I do a urine sample & he will test the urine for calcium levels & other indicators. This made perfect sense to me. Once he reviews the results, he will be able to suggest the appropriate treatment for osteoporosis. All in all, a great visit with a doctor that truly cares about the individual patient as a human being. I wouldn't hesitate to refer Dr. Levine to anyone needing an endocrinologist.

I hate going to most doctors as they speed through the appointment before you realize it's over and still stiff you with a huge bill whether or not they're helpful. Mr. Kahan was extremely pleasant, thorough, and offered multiple periods for me to ask questions or express any sentiments. He made a personal connection and made sure I was comfortable. For someone who has never had a consistent general practitioner, I will definitely be booking all my future doctor visits with him.
