In the absence of Tsingdao or other Asian brew, I opted for Modelo Especial, a very good Mexican lager with strong, yet balanced flavor. The 24 count case cost $33 and change including tax. No bad, but not as reasonable as at my favorite alcohol warehouse in Jersey. Still, considering time and transportation, it was well worth it. Happy New Year, Everybody!

While the 19th Century look of the old place was cool, having an air conditioned space large enough to hold and display a vast variety of American and international suds, is an improvement. They even have room for the mid-sized shopping carts that can hold a couple of cases while you shop and make way to the cashier. We were in a Mexican fiesta mood, so picked up a 12 bottle case of Corona, and another of Dos Equis (XX) Sampler. Bought a supply of Lime at Tanner Bros. True, the price of cerveza goes up all the time, especially for the imports, but there is something to be said for comfort and convenience in brew buying. Cold Spring opens at 9 during the week, giving it a leg up on other local distributors who open later in the morning. Never too early for fiesta!

The inventory is definitely focused on wine from around the globe, with enough American vintages to honor most of the west coast vineyards. Not much from the East. That oversight is corrected by their bourbon/whiskey aisle which offers an interesting dive into some of the secondary and tertiary distilling from some of the older and larger southern industrial stills. I was there to restock our supply of Amaretto and sipping bourbon which we had been enjoying at home during this prolonged pandemic. Those Amaretto Sours were a big hit, and Wild Turkey Honey shots were great with hummus, baba ganoush and fava beans. The staff was knowledgeable, masked and they packed everything well. While the choices are not as extensive as the big stores in Jersey (think Joe Canal's), and because it is Pennsylvania, lacks any beer, this Premium Selection Fine Wine house is attractive and much cleaner than the competition on the other side of the Delaware River. Given the choice, cost of fuel and extra time needed for crossing the bridges, this emporium offers a reasonable alternative without leaving town.

Like the other state-controlled alcoholic beverage stores, you can only buy wine & spirits (you can't buy beer, you have to go to a distributor or bar for that). The employee staff is barely friendly. On the opposite end, when you visit a privately owned place such as Total Wine & Spirits (located next to the Cherry Hill mall in New Jersey), you will find everything you are looking for (at a competitive price). You will get free wine samplings.... you can purchase both beer AND wine at the same location. This is one of a few things that New Jersey does right (privatization of alcoholic beverage stores is the only way to go). Another example would be the Wine Works store in Marlton, NJ. The staff is often found in the aisles, ready to assist you; offering suggestions and answering your questions ........ this is customer service that is not found and most of the state-controlled liquor stores in PA.
