    a kitchen being remodeled

So far Roger García and his crew with Finishing Touches Construction of Charlotte, North Carolina has completed a kitchen bath splash project. His crew of two men installed a very professional and aesthetically pleasing marble mosaic backsplash. I'm pleased to say they were organized and timely with my kitchen backsplash. They were also friendly and efficient. Roger did a great job supervising and coordinating all the important details of the project. It provided a beautiful modern update to my kitchen. Also, it will provide a nice protective barrier against food and beverage splashes. Roger is also doing a master bathroom remodel for me, which I will update with a review in the future. I would recommend Roger and Finishing Touches Construction.

Newly installed white tile meeting old

I hired Roger from Finishing Touches based on online reviews and with the hope that he might provide "quality work and exceptional customer service" as stated on his website. Throughout much of the timeline involved, his communication was very forthcoming on a sizable tile install he was addressing for me. Roger sold this job on the guarantee that the removal of old tile being replaced would generate a lot of dust and debris as the floor surface (concrete) would need to be smooth and clean before new tile was installed, and that any other contractor who said otherwise would not be truthful. He said he could use an air purifying machine that would suck all of the dust from the work site up and expel it outside as purified air. Not only did he not provide this machine (oddly claiming later that my job didn't need it when he had assessed the site at first visit) not even a shop vac was provided to collect the considerable amount of dust and debris generated, even though I inquired about the use of one on more than one occasion. Only after the tile was installed, and little debris remained, was one brought to the site. I repeatedly found myself sweeping up dust and debris (using my own dustpan) since the workers assigned to the job were not very thorough with this, and individuals I spoke with at flooring stores confirmed new tile should be laid on a smooth and clean surface before install. At final payment, there were a few ragged edges on new tile meeting old tile in a laundry closet, so I asked Roger if he could address this, but he claimed the tile was uneven to begin with (it was cut by his installers) and has since ended all follow up communication. A door that sticks when opening due to the new tile install also remains unaddressed. While his workers were, for the most part, hardworking and competent, skill levels were variable, and communication somewhat challenging as unfortunately I don't speak much Spanish.

We repainted my front door, side lights and Shutters, restoration of a very large deck which included sanding, pressure washing, repairing broken slats and then staining and also pressure washed the chimney.

They also responded to my Yelp project request very quickly. They completed the work on time (even a day early), the team was courteous and professional, and the quality of their work is great. They listened to direction well, and corrected any issues that arose (they put back a light fixture in the wrong place and moved it after we pointed it out). I feel they knew what they were doing and the best products to use. They covered our flooring and elements that were not getting painted to prevent damage and I can't find any paint spills or smudges anywhere. Our project also involved a lot of wallpaper removal. I was nervous about this because if the wallpaper is not removed correctly the wall can be damaged or leftover wallpaper glue can cause the new paint not to adhere correctly. But it seems they did a great job with that part too. They communicated well with us via text. We weren't able to check on the project in person every day so they sent photos and details on progress. I plan to use them again for additional painting projects.

Rather than stating that they're great to work with (which they truly are) let me elaborate on my actual experience. Given I was seeking to remodel an existing porch structure in a pretty significant way, I initially enlisted the services of a structural engineering firm to create drawings for me. Thereafter, I began interviewing prospective contractors to perform the work laid out in the drawings and was quite surprised at the relative indifference and/or opposition shown by several contractors toward the existence of the plans - most claimed there wasn't a need for them or attempted to tell me how engineers just overcomplicate things. Paul, on the other hand, was actually delighted to know that I had these engineering plans in hand and went over them with me at our very first meeting. He was intelligent enough to realize that if he followed the engineering drawings, as laid out; he would have no issues in getting the project through the county code enforcement process which would be a win for both him, as a contractor, and me, as the client. Paul takes a lot of pride in his work and he works hard to please his customers. By nature, I am a very particular individual; and being a Realtor by profession, makes me even more so. Paul took all of my feedback in stride and did everything he could to meet my exacting standards. There were days when I literally hovered over him and his team; more so to learn from them (given my profession) rather than to supervise - but I'm quite sure this couldn't have been a lot of fun for him and the crew. In the few instances where my expectation on certain things happened to exceed the underlying project scope; Paul was very diplomatic in pointing this out to me and we quickly found common ground such that I wasn't compromising his profit margins and was able to fulfill my desires. I also wanted a proper estimate on the front end; as well as, a full paper trail of the project - including change orders - which Paul readily supplied. Paul's pricing was fair and the project was completed within the cost margins of error and project timeline I had planned for. I had a vision for what the porch would look like when completed and Paul provided a lot of good feedback in making my vision a reality. We talked through a lot of different things like material choices, design, electrical outlet locations etc. I'll conclude by saying Paul is just a genuinely good person....period; and anyone who opts to work with him is in good hands. Thank you Paul, Ivan and the rest of the team!
