Of course I'm from Out of Town, and sure I brought my knitting supplies, but who doesn't need a visit to the local yarn shop where they feel welcome as soon as they come through the door. The yarn selection is wonderful, those leather bags are indulgent. Did you forget something at home? You'll find it here! Take a look at the shop samples and the trunk show! I hear you can meet locals on Fridays and Sundays! You know I'll be there, right? Parking is a little tight with the Physical Therapy office next door, but it's worth the walk in case you have to park a little further away! read more

Great selection of Rowan brand yarns. This shop is the only store is the US to sell exclusively Rowan yarns. The yarn is gorgeous and the staff were really friendly when I visited. read more

I wasn't aware a Finnegan's had opened in Fredericksburg VA, so I was elated to find it there. It is owned by the same lady as Untangled Purls. The shop is beautifully laid out and full of all the Rowan yarn bases and latest colors. Very pleasant shopping experience. read more

I didn't want to go somewhere I'd be looked at suspect or like a unicorn, so I searched for a Black-owned yarn shop. To my surprise, Gathering Yarns was just 25 minutes from DC and worth the drive. The yarn shop is a standard storefront in a strip mall, so it was both easy and difficult to find at the same time. You can't miss the mall itself, but you'll have to scan to notice the store. The interior is cute with a modest selection of yarn, needles, and other accessories. The skein I bought was reasonably priced, but since I'm a new knitter, relative value is still unclear. I took the beginner knitting class and the instructors were great. They give you one-on-one attention and focus on your learning style and your strengths. I learned the basics and will definitely be going back for more lessons. All-in-all I really dig this place and will definitely be back.

The woman who checked us out was an absolute delight, warm, funny, and exactly what you hope for at a local farm stand. Unfortunately my experience in the herb section was the opposite. When I asked about strawberry plants and was told they didn't have any, I mentioned I was a first time gardener and asked if she could recommend something beginner friendly. Her response was essentially "just pick something, all you have to do is water them." When I explained again that I was new and looking for guidance, she told me she couldn't help me. As a first time gardener trying to learn, that kind of dismissiveness was discouraging. If it weren't for the lovely woman at checkout, I likely wouldn't return. I ended up going to Ed's Plant World in Brandywine where the staff were warm, welcoming, and genuinely helpful to a beginner. The difference was night and day. That said, I'm giving 4 stars because the place is really awesome in terms of selection and variety. The woman in the herb section may have just been having a bad day. It's absolutely worth checking out.
