They were rude and unhelpful. The owner took one look at my grandmother's ring and said it was fake, they refused to appraise it. I had it checked elsewhere and proved them wrong. They don't work with people they think are poor, they were rude and snobby and I will not be returning. read more

Summary: if you don't have a lot to spend, you will not be valued. This place does not deserve your money. We took a sentimental silver pendant to be polished/restored which involved removing old lacquer from the piece and to have the chain be removed (it had no clasp). The piece had an engraving of my recently passed father's initials, and I was adamant that we did not want the engraving to be removed. We asked what, if anything, could be done to restore the piece and the jeweler asked permission to polish a corner of the piece to show us what it would look like. I agreed, and after seeing the polished corner decided to leave the piece for the entire back to be polished, again confirming that the engraving would not be removed. The polished corner shown to me at that time did not have any polish marks/scratches. When returning to pick up the piece, the chain had not been removed and the engraving had been worn away and polish marks covered the entire back of the piece. It looked terrible in the light when all the marks were reflecting and visible. I asked if there was any way the engraving could be made more prominent and asked why there were scratches. I mentioned I was not happy with the result, kindly and calmly. The woman at the counter took the piece back to ask, and returned with the jeweler in tow. He explained why the engraving was less prominent, saying that it had been engraved through the lacquer and removal of the lacquer meant the engraving was not as deep and therefore not as prominent. (This was not mentioned as a possibility when dropping the piece off.) When questioned about the "scratches" (I am not a jeweler, so I did not know to use the term "polish marks"), he became defensive saying he thought he was "doing us a favor" and "I shouldn't have even touched the thing". (Sir, we came in asking for a paid service. Not a favor. If you could not perform the paid service, do not take on that responsibility.) My response was "I don't think that was necessary." He then began speaking over us, in a very rude and confrontational manner, simply because we were asking about the piece and expressed disappointment in the result. No one should ever treat a customer the way he spoke to us. We originally intended on buying a new chain for the pendant at Ulman's, but we told him we were done and turned away to pay for the damage done to my deceased father's pendant. It is important to note that at no point were WE rude or confrontational. We chose not to purchase a chain at Ulman's, and walked down the street to Crown Jewelers where we were immediately met with a warm welcome from multiple staff members. As I explained the events of the last few minutes, the weight of what had just transpired hit me and I became emotional. The women working there were very kind and offered me a tissue and expressed their condolences. When shown the pendant, the staff at Crown Jewelers immediately saw the problem with the "repair" completed by Ulman's and offered what solutions they could. They also informed me the link to connect my pendant to a chain was STILL OPEN, and therefore could have fallen from a chain if placed on one. The staff proceeded to help me pick out the perfect chain while the owner took my pendant and cleaned it up (apparently it was not cleaned before it was given back to me, which was accentuating the "polish scratches") and closed the link (recommended I come back to have it soldered closed, which I will be doing after the holidays). The appearance of my pendant was improved as much as it could be and I felt like a valued customer when I left. Today I learned Crown Jewelers will show you care no matter what amount you are spending. I strongly feel our appearance and the amount of money we were spending had a huge impact on our treatment at Ulman's. I doubt they would be in business so long if this is the way they treated all their customers. Be aware and do not trust them with your sentimental pieces, and certainly do not trust them to be kind and put the customer first. This business will never get my recommendation again nor my money. read more

I had 2 pieces of jewelry I needed to get repaired so I went to a jewelry store in downtown but they had a note stating they'd "be back at 2:45" which was an hour off on a 90 degree day. I wandered down the street and saw Ulman's so I walked in. The folks working there couldn't have been nicer!! I showed my daughter's bracelet to the dark haired lady who works there and she fixed the bracelet in like 2 seconds. She took my necklace (stone had fallen out of the brackets) to the back of the store and they fixed it in about 5 minutes. Much to my shock she said they weren't charging me for the repairs!! I was referred to Ulman's for some work I needed some on my rings. Very friendly staff and the work was completed sooner than the anticipated finish date. I had rings sized, soldered and rhodium plated and the overall price was great compared to what places ask in the mall type settings. I brought my son here about a month ago to help him pick out his engagement ring for our future DIL. The moment we walked into the store we were treated like family. We were walked through how everything works, given a class on diamonds, had multiple stones brought out for comparison, shown each stone through a magnifying eye piece, allowed to take photos, the experience goes on. Ullman's is that kind of jewelery store you just don't find anymore. It's family owned and has been around forever. My grandma went there. My great aunt went there. My aunt went there, and now I go there. The customer service is excellent should you want help in picking something out, or should you need a service like engraving. They have a nice variety of jewelry, from gemstones to diamonds, to pearls, to watches, and they also offer classy gifts, like sterling photo frames and baby cups, spoons, etc. Additionally, they have china and wedding registry type things. When I need to buy something for a special occasion, I'll go out of my way to shop at Ulman's. It's that good. read more

I would say that most of them have been with Ulman's for years. The know their stuff. I also love the fact that it is family owned. They carry a wide range of jewelry from the new and unique to the old and antique. The also carry some very cool chotchkies. I have purchased several items from them including a great pair of black pearl earrings to several place settings of china. I think the best thing I ever purchased from Ulman's was a vintage silver tea pot with candle to keep the tea hot during service. I'm so happy I took my jewelry to Ulman's for repair and appraisal. Mr. Ulman is the sweetest kindest man and he will forever have my business. Needed a pendant repaired at the last minute and wanted to get it back the same day. Although they were busy he took care of my piece so I could have it on time for my special event. Then had some pieces appraised, but didn't get a call they were ready for pick-up. Mr. Ulman let me pick it up after closing and was so understanding how attached I was to my wedding set. Due to traffic it took me longer than expected to get to the store while he waited, but he was so kind and understanding about getting my pieces back to me I was so touched. He even introduced me to his companion, a Shetland puppy. I highly recommend this family owned business. Ulman's put together my engagement ring. They had to modify the setting to accomodate my choice of stones. I am giving them a 4 star (more like 4.5) instead of 5 b/c although they made the modification, the setting did not end up being symmetrical. (I'm sure I'm the only one who notices it.) The customer service is wonderful; they did all they could to work with the setting. They also provided a plain wedding band that fitted the shape of my engagement ring at no additional cost. The shop seems small but they have a good selection. It's fun to browse the cases and also to see what they have in the back - china, handbags, and other lovely items. It's one of those places where you can find something unique or classic. I also have a bracelet from Ulman's. It's just perfect. I haven't found anything like it anywhere else. I can't recommend Ulman's Jewelry enough! Great costumer service. 1st I had a prong fixed and they did a wonderful job, it didn't look like they did any work on it, like it looked brand new. 2nd I lost a diamond on my wedding band due to a bad welding job done elsewhere. They replaced the diamond and tightened and fixed the surrounding stones that where a little loose and slightly out of place. The band looked brand new! read more

I should let my honey write this, as he is the one who worked with them. I recently got engaged (!) and he worked with Jerry at Ulman's for months to order the setting and choose the diamond. All without me knowing, and all with him traveling for work. Amazing! The ring is gorgeous, and the service was and has been outstanding. I now take my watches there for batteries, and they have a nice selection of fancy dishes, gifts, linens, and nutcrackers too! I so prefer local shops to the 4,000 corporate mall stores, and when the times comes to get my wedding band, we will go back to Ulman's. read more

Let me start with the good-- nice and polite staff, lots of gifts of all sorts, from porcelain and trinkets to high end jewelry. The selection of engagement rings is huge for a store of this size and there are some unique makers. As well as a a small estate section that is fun. Now onto the bad... Custom work.. I like custom jewelry. I like certain stones that are hard to find in the average store so I like to buy loose and design around them. I went to Ulman's after having joined a friend who had lovely pieces made that weren't my style but quite lovely. So I decided to have my birthday earrings made. We decided on a basic style with some modifications with the understanding if a stock setting wouldn't work, bezels would be custom made. They found a stock prong setting that has prongs on the underside with the appearance of a bezel. It is ok. Not what I had in mind as I asked for a bezel setting in the traditional sense (this again is prong set from the back and has some knife edge Bezel as opposed to a nice tight rounded one flat to stone) but the part I was disappointed with was that the stones were sloppily set with visible gaps around parts and one earring off center. Visible to the eye without very close inspection. Under loupe it was just plain sloppy. Also the rhodium playing was damaged and looked like tool gouges along the bezel. Lastly, the stock part of the setting is extremely light weight. The price tag is not. They are priced as custom work for a 2/3 stock piece (wires and pear bezels were stock and diamond bezels hand made or so I understood). These are fine green grossular garnets and should be set accordingly. The owner was absolutely amenable to having them fine-tuned but noted that "the average customer wouldnt even notice". I'm not the average customer and when I order custom work I expect it to be done right the first time, stock parts or not. when we drove down a 2nd time the same problem still existed! Now remember this was time two AND they had called and said the earrings were ready with no explanation that gaps are still visible. My boyfriend was picking them up on his way back from a trip so he had to inspect and handle the issue but we were pretty surprised that the same problem would still be present after the previous exchange and reiteration of my understanding that bezels would be handmade if the stock setting was a poor fit. Needless to say I am rather disappointed. Back to the good-- because I wasn't there, the owner offered to let us inspect and return if necessary and noted that the setting was as close as they could get without hand making the bezels. But... What a pain to deal with if I'm not satisfied because it's a 3rd trip and all the stones have to be removed which may mean yet another 4th trip if the jeweler isn't on site ( let me note that this point is also not clear... I was there with my friend when she was told they send jewelry out bc no jeweler on site whereas I was told they have a jeweler.. Maybe it depends on complexity and method -- prong work vs CAD design but now I am wary of that as well). The owner did take a small percent off for the inconvenience of two trips which I do respect so all in all a middling experience. And rated accordingly. Keep to professionally made pieces and I think they have a stellar selection for folks looking for gifts. I won't try my luck with custom jewelry again, though. read more

I went to Ulman's as it was recommended to me by several family members and friends. The stone on my grandfather's ring was cracked so I went to get it replaced. When I went in initially, I had a good experience. I spoke to a staff member and told them I wanted to keep the original stone after repair. I specifically asked that this be the only repair, as I was happy with the rest. When I went to pick it up (mind you, they never called me and I waited four weeks to find out they forgot to call) I noticed the band was reshaped. It used to be shaped to my grandfather's finger and that's what loved/ felt comfortable wearing. It felt like I had a bigger piece of him with me. Naturally, when I saw it was reshaped, I was upset that the ring didn't fit anymore and felt unlike the one I had known. I went back to see if they could shape it to how I was comfortable and the owner was extremely rude to me. I thought it would be a simple request and he kept telling me how ridiculous it was to ask for it to be "misshaped" when it was "probably my grandfather who broke it in the first place" (my grandfather passed away a few years ago and I told them this was all I had to connect me to him). I tried my best to remain composed and helpful and clearly explained how it used to be and the owner refused to meet my request. I ended up leaving the store in tears after having been ridiculed enough by the owner and feeling as though my sentiments and values were of no importance whatsoever. When it comes to jewelry repairs, you have to understand the attachment people have to their belongings--to leave your valuables in the hands of a stranger is already hard enough . I went into Ulman's trusting their judgement and while the ring was repaired, it feels entirely unlike the one I knew. Ulman's wants to fit the retail standard--not the customer's. I do not appreciate how I was treated as an individual whose priority was to keep their loved one's memory alive. Ulman's does not know how to place themselves in their customers' shoes and displayed a horrible example of customer service. Take your belongings elsewhere if you pieces hold any sort of deeper value. Staff was somewhat nice, but the owner (the repairer) is another story. Don't offer excuses, offer solutions. read more

Ulman's Jewelry is great. I regrettably purchased an engagement ring at Helzberg. Two prongs broke off in less than six months because they were cut too deep. They also wanted me to pay for the repairs . Long story short; I took the ring to Ulman's where they put a new setting on for less than what Helzberg offered. They also guarantee the ring and setting with no gimmicks. Everyone that works there is so polite and never pushes you to buy anything. It's a great home town business with fair prices and integrity. True jewelers, and I could not be more pleased! I have a pair of antique brass glasses that I wear, and recently snapped the temple piece. I called every store in the area that offered repair services, and found that nobody had any idea what they were doing. I was informed that they could only be fixed by laser (not true, there's a reason why soldering techniques have existed for thousands of years and continue to do so) or that they only worked in gold and silver (requiring the same exact tools to repair the problem, with no detriment to tool or metal as brass). Thankfully the real jewelers at Ulman's know what they're doing, and fixed the piece within minutes while i waited, at a very reasonable cost. Thank you, Ulman's, for greeting me pleasantly, being both helpful and knowledgeable, and for having the most beautiful damascus knives and lovely silver torque bracelets to distact me on my quest for repair! read more

I was waiting for a sales clerk to bring my ring back from being repaired. I was carrying a Vera Bradley bag of my very own. While waiting I went to the back of the store to look at the Vera Bradley bags that were for sale there. I then stepped back over to the cash register to wait for my repair. An employee of the store seemed to get worked up and was looking at me. She then had the audacity to ask me if I would like to pay for that bag. I then walked over and showed her the bag was mine. Showed her that it was indeed a used bag not one off their shelves. I of course did not receive an apology either. I love shopping downtown! Last year I was looking for something special for my wife for her birthday. I tried all the usual jewelry stores I've bought from over the years, Zales, Jarred, Kaye's and others but I had never been to Ulman's Big mistake! I was shocked at the selection and dazzling beauty of their jewelry. Fantastic staff that treated me like family, not just a customer. The ring I picked out was very reasonably priced but needed about 3 weeks lead time to get but it was only 10 days till my wife's birthday. I was a little worried when they said they would make it happen. But Ulman's came through as promised in only 8 days! The ring was gorgeous, so much so that my wife broke down crying when I gave it to her. My wife owns 12 rings, and although this isn't the most expensive one she says it's her favorite. Ulman's has gained me as a customer for life. Fantastic people, amazing selection, incredible prices. I'll be back this June to pick out something for my wife for our 40th wedding anniversary.
