So, I've never had Texas bbq. At least not the real stuff. We have Dallas BBQ's here in nyc, and that, i don't believe, is real Texas bbq lol. So of course, when in Houston, you look for good bbq food, and that's exactly what i wanted! Me and my friend had split the taste of the south which included 4 meats, 4 sides, slices of white bread, pickles and onions. It also came with a bbq sauce as well. We ordered two drinks. Fountain and they had their version of iced tea which was more like kool aid. It was so good. Normally i don't rate restaurants very high because a lot of them missed the mark. This one tho!! Omg! It needs to be higher on the Yelp list. The customer service was 10/10! Top tier. We were welcomed, helped and the employees were so inviting it felt like a welcome home. Which is always nice. We ordered the taste of the south.. the meats and sides we chose were brisket, (8/10 super peppery outside. Pull apart was nice and it was tender). Ribs (9/10) meaty, dry rubbed and delicious! With that added sauce, yes! Yes! Yes! We ordered the mild in house sausage, which were great! It had a little bit of a pepper flavor and it was delicious. Personally, i give the sausage a 7/10, and the star of the show to me was the turkey breast! Omg!! It was smoked to perfection yet the juiciest piece of turkey I've ever had in my life! It was so flavorful, and just all around delicious! (10/10!) the sides we ordered were the potato salad (10/10!!!) that potato salad tasted sooooo good!! The Cajun rice was really good too, the collard greens were also sooo good!! The smoked turkey in the greens were such a hit too. It gave it so much more flavor. The greens were so good you could've drank the juice!! And the bbq sauce was good. I prefer a vinegar based sauce, but i didn't ask for that. So this is what came with our food and it was everything! Oh my goodness... absolutely delicious! The rib meat quite literally fell off the bone, brisket was moist, and sausage was packed full of Cajun flavor. Potato salad was creamy and tangy. Cajun rice was cooked perfectly and had lots of flavor as well. The banana pudding wasn't too sweet which I liked, though I do wish there were more wafers! The restaurant has a cute rustic aesthetic and there's plenty of seating available. I believe the owner was the one who kept checking in on us which was sweet of him. The best BBQ I've had. The bark on the brisket was stellar. The flavor were delicious and kept me wanting more. The whole family loved it. The smokiness was the right amount and added to the overall taste. The sausage was moist, slightly spicy and had that crunchiness you want in the well cooked and prepared sausage. The pulled pork is the best I've ever had - juicy, flavorful, pulled apart yet still has that meaty texture. The side dishes of collard greens, green beans, baked beans and rice were well seasoned and very complementary to the overall meal. I have to admit that I did sip on the BBQ sauce as it was so delicious. however all the meat and dishes stand on their own, so I didn't need it at all to enjoy all the flavors. The atmosphere inside is inviting and gives you that authentic feel. The bathrooms were clean and presentable. The tables were clean and welcoming. The BBQ smell isn't overwhelming anything it's present. The parking lot is large although I bet this place can get busy so you might need to be patient. I arrived at 2pm on Wednesday so there wasn't a line. I highly recommend this place! I'll definitely be back. I wanted a bake potato and this came up as I was leaving the airport. When arriving the food smelled amazing as soon as I opened my car door. They have outside tables as well as indoor. The ambiance was laid back and chill listening to the smooth old school R and B. the restrooms were very clean and well stocked. I order the turkey potato and it was a nice size. It was hot and delicious. It comes with bacon chives sour cream butter and cheese. I opted to get my bbq sauce on the side. The bbq sauce had a slight sweet to it but was not overly sweet just how I like it. I will be returning when in the area to try different things. I hate when I find places like this. I know I'm going back despite rejections and objections from my frugal meter. My New Orleans soul wants to find good food that is really inexpensive. I know that our social climate has made meat prices skyrocket over the last few years...but a vegetarian lifestyle is not fat man friendly. I go to this place and they have a constant group of people coming in and out. That's a good sign. I saw all racial groups in here... that's another really good sign. I saw a board on the ground that had specials on it...my frugal meter really liked seeing that! Any meat based place is going to make me frugal meter scream...and this place was no different. I wondered if the pricing was going to match the taste...well... I'll tell you this: 1. These people are really friendly and professional. I think the purposely hire all cute ladies! One lady said she was the owner, but she looked like an Instagram model...I think they are making certain males come back my having a good looking staff and good looking food. 2. This food is not the type of food that will spike your vitals and having your primary care physician scoffing at you. The food has light seasoning so you can enjoy the food and enjoy it often. This is a bbq joint and they didn't even try to hide behind a bbq sauce... which the bbq sauce was really delicious. They gave it to me as a side dipping sauce. The boudin even had a nice flavor with a slight spice kick at the end. It's a good Texas take on a Louisiana staple. I like the addition of firecracker crackers to enjoy the item. Even the homemade pound cake with lemon icing was not overly sweet. You can eat that with no guilt creeping in. 3. If you dine in, you have access to unlimited refills on your drink. All in all, this friendly staff will provide you with good eats. If you already are used to paying the prices for bbq now and days, you will have minimal complaints here. Despite my frugal meter yelling when I go there, I'll just hope their frequent eater program can give me the discounts I think will be needed to make my frugal meter pipe down! I stumbled by (dinner to go) after a long weekend, not realizing at first that it was just a few minutes shy of their closing hour on Sunday evening. The brisket wasn't anything remarkable (quite dry to be honest), but the sausage had just the right amount of kick and the creamy, stick-to-the-top-of-your-mouth mac was gooey perfection. I went to Southern Q last week! Customer service was great! Wait time was not long for food! The ordering process wasn't difficult but they were just out of everything! Which is a good sign and let's you know business is booming but there wasn't a lot of selections! One of the waiters did explain there was corporate party earlier that day. I ordered peach cobbler and it was not good at ALL!! it tasted Burned! I could only get the sausage sandwich for myself and my friend was able to get the " big papa " they expressed there was enough meat to maybe make one. The fries I got with my sandwich tasted like chopped potatoes that soaked in oil. I couldn't finish them. So I decided to get a bag of chips but the chip bag was expired after I ate half of the chips I realized on the way home. The layout of the restaurant is nice! First things first.... You're here 'cause you want BBQ. So first the food.... GREAT BBQ!! Phenomenal flavor. The briquette didn't seem to be your classic Texas Salt, Pepper, Smoke but VERY good. Great bark on the meat, tender, moist, and really flavorful. The Cajun sausage was so tasty. And when you add the spicy bbq sauce? Crazy good.... The ribs were tender, flavorful and also has a really nice bark. And now for the sides... we had the green beans, Cajun rice (dirty rice), and fried okra. The greens beans were wonderful - tender and so flavorful. Reminded me of my Texas grandma's. And that lady could cook.... The Cajun rice was on point. If you like dirty rice, you'll REALLY like theirs. I guarantee. The star of the evening though was the fried okra. Seriously. It practically outshined the bbq meats themselves! It was wonderfully crispy on the outside and soft on the inside - as it should be, btw. But what made it shine was that it was tastefully seasoned. Just salty enough that it was like eating Lays potato chips. You CANNOT eat just one. Okay... now for service: everyone was so friendly and accommodating. The staff were there to serve and be helpful in any way they could be. Even though you order and then go sit, they came by multiple times to check on us offering more of whatever we needed. The ambiance is great as well. It's not a huge dining room (see pics) but very comfortable. They nailed the South/East Texas vibe which matched the south TX/Louisiana bbq flavors note for note. Upon walking to the cashier, I was automatically greeted with a big smile. The manager next to the cashier was so friendly and welcoming. If it wasn't for her I would've given this restaurant a 3 star review. I originally thought she was the owner but later asked the guy that handed me the food that was the manager. She's a true gem to this restaurant. Unfortunately I forgot her name because the guy said it so softly twice and I still couldn't hear him. The restaurant looked clean and spacious. There's a ton of parking. There's seating inside and outside as shown in the pictures I uploaded. The drink options are as expected - sweet tea, unsweet tea, soda and their special homemade q-punch (that is very sweet). It was raspberry tea. The menu is on the left side of the wall when you enter or at the cash register which doesn't really make sense - it should be at the entrance where they have there suggestions box. Unless that is where people return the menus after looking at them. The food speed was average. Realize that everything is premade so it's pretty much just assembling into a take out box or a plate. Now the food. I went with the ribs and pulled pork. The chicken is an extra cost which makes me wonder why? What about the chicken (inexpensive meat) makes it superior to the others? It's usually the ribs that cost more. I had a side of collard greens because whenever I eat bbq I want collard greens. I appreciated that the collard greens weren't salty. It didn't have the bacon kick that I was hoping for though. As for the meat, I appreciated that the meat was lean. Well more lean than fat. As for flavor, taste and texture, eh. Both meat options were dry. The meat didn't fall off the ribs. The pulled pork required quite some chewing because it was dry. Now I wonder if it was because it was more lean than fat? Since I prefer more lean than fat it's hard to judge. There really wasn't much of a flavor to the meats. I guess that's what the bbq sauce is for? Most bbq restaurants I've been to I haven't used the sauce on the side because the flavor on the meat was enough. I did appreciate that it wasn't OD salty. Now for the BBQ sauce. I was a tad disappointed. It reminded me of the generic bbq sauce in the grocery store. Now I know there are different types of bbq sauce depending on what state you're in and what part of the state. I've been lucky that every bbq joint I've been to so happened to have the type of bbq sauce I like which has a tangy vinegar taste. Unfortunately their choice of bbq sauce wasn't in my favor - no vinegar taste present. As for the prices, it was a tad on the higher side. Typically for a 1 meat, 2 meat or 3 meat combo with 2 sides ends up in the $16, $18, $20 range. They should also discard their faulty stock of cups. There were pinpoint holes all in the bottom. It took me a while to realize and notice it. See pics attached. Obviously not an error on their end and moreso where they purchase it. We ordered some oxtails on a weekday and were told they only had those on weekends, requested a refund over the phone ( since we ordered online) supposedly they refunded my card and we never received it back !! There is a subtle southern comfort when approaching the red and yellow building nestled in the pine trees. The smell of good food rolls out the door as you walk in. The ribs are tender and savory. No barbecue sauce is needed. The Mac n cheese is homemade and creamy. The collard greens were soft and flavorful. The staff was sincerely polite. The Resturant was super clean and the restrooms were very tidy. I will make it a point to stop here on my way out of Houston from now on. read more
