We were on the road and Fire Creek was the closest restaurant for lunch. I usually yelp everything but in this situation we just needed lunch and to get on our way, so I did not check the reviews. I was impressed with the inside of the restaurant. The ambience was great. I had the Nicoise salad and I have to say the Ahi tuna was top-notch. The rest of the salad only so so. My husband had the chicken with mozzarella hot sandwich and it was a little overwhelmed with cheese. The french fries were good. I only had two of them because he ate them so quickly. Ordered the Fire Creek Hamburger and Soup. Laura-- my wait staff -- appeared a bit rushed but took my order in a friendly manner-- my wait time for service and my bill was too long. Here's hoping my burger is hot enough and my soup is beyond warm. Received my burger which in my opinion was non descriptive. The meat was tasteless due to needing more seasoning. My bun got soggy due to the water content in the bar be que sauce. My soup was warm and a tad spicy. Even with these negatives the quality of the meat was good to warrant a 3. We go here so regularly, it escaped me that I hadn't updated my review for many years. This is one of our go-to places alone or with guests, as the food, ambiance, and service are always top notch. On this visit, I got the Chilean SeaBass. This is a dish that I've had a number of places, and it seemingly can be difficult for some places to prepare, but Fire Creek always has done it wonderfully for me! It's tender and flavorful. My wife got Rotisserie Chicken. It's a generous serving of nicely flavored chicken with a side of your choice, and a soup or salad. They have a great house dressing (creamy parmesan) for the salads, and I really like their garlic mashed potatoes, which are sometimes in the rotation. Their wild rice mix is also excellent. Other dishes we've had in our many trips here that we highly recommend are: Salmon BLT, Coconut shrimp, any of the salads, Ribs, Whiskey Honey chop, Lamb Chops, Tenderloin Medallions, Walleye, Mahi-Mahi, Asiago Chicken, Salmon, and Veggie Pasta. I like the variety here - there is everything from steak to seafood, to the great Honey Chop, to salads, and sandwiches. Kids get a great meal deal and a dish of ice cream to top things off. Stopped in at Fire Creek on Saturday afternoon with a group of four and sat in the bar area. We chose Fire Creek to support a local restaurant, but our visit didn't quite meet expectations. There was only one server working the bar, and while he was friendly and professional, he seemed stretched thin, which led to a long wait for initial greet and slower service. Our drinks included wine, a cocktail, and an espresso martini. Unfortunately, the martini lacked any espresso flavor whatsoever, and tasted only of Bailey's and vodka. We also tried the calamari, which our server recommended. It was overcooked, dry and tough, so we didn't enjoy it as much as we'd hoped. Overall, we appreciated the friendly service, but the food and drink quality were disappointing on this visit. I really wanted to love this place and hope this was just an off day, as I'd like to continue supporting local spots like Fire Creek. read more

My out-of-state coworkers and I all visited our coworkers in Des Moines and Fire Creek was where we'd decided to have dinner because the food was said to be great, and they had a gluten free menu (I have Celiac Disease). Our server James was not very knowledgeable about gluten free options, first telling me they didn't have a lot of gluten free items, and not offering a gluten free menu. When we retrieved our own gluten free menu from the server station, James recommended sides that were clearly not gluten free or could have been offered if he'd known what gluten is (rice pilaf, fries from a shared frier, no baked potatoes, etc.) to go with my chosen menu item. I asked that our server note that I have an allergy (so the kitchen knows and can take extra precaution with my food to prevent cross contamination). I don't know if he didn't do that or if the kitchen just didn't understand. Today, I'm traveling back to Texas "glutenized". I will have joint pain in my knees, my elbows, my neck, and my hands for a couple months. I will have bloating making me appear 4-6 months pregnant, stomach distress, and other "tummy troubles" for several days, a brain fog for 2-ish days, and nutrition absorption issues for roughly 6 months. Suffice it to say, the food tasted good, but the "gift that keeps on giving" isn't worth it. Would not recommend for anyone with Celiac Disease until staff take precautions to prevent medically impairing their guests for months. read more

We tried this restaurant for the first time with our good friends not really sure what to expect. Our neighbor made a reservation online for 6pm. We got there right at 6, and for some reason the hostess was not able to find our reservation. But, she acknowledged the email we had showing that the reservation was made online. She apologized and told us we'd be seated as quickly as they could open a table for us. We went to the bar, got a drink, and by the time we got back to waiting area, our table was ready. Great start! Our waitress promptly greeted is and brought us waters. She had a wonderful personality and was really pleasant. Appetizers were the calamari and the mosquito bites, which were fried wontons filled with cream cheese. Both were very good. I had the Whiskey Honey Chop, which had to be the most tender pork chop I've ever eaten. The sauce on it was so sweet and amazing. My wife had the Tenderloin Medallions and she loved it. I had a bite, and it was so tender and delicious. We were extremely impressed. We are already planning our return trip to this restaurant. It's casual, but has fantastic food and a nice atmosphere. We visited here with a larger group for a nice night out. Walking in & being greeted was great. The fireplace was very calming & welcoming. All of us were very happy with the food & drinks. The pricing was reasonable with a large variety of options. Service was great, but they seemed a bit overwhelmed. The only real down side was being put in their 'banquet room". We were told on the phone that they didn't take reservations for booths in the bar, but if we got there before 6:00 pm they'd have one. We arrived at 5:45 and there were three empty booths in the bar. We were told by the manager that we couldn't sit there because they were "reserved". This place is always consistently good. The server was Uber attentive and the place is away very comfortable and warm even if you are in the bar. I had the special which was the open face prime rib sandwich and it comes with a side. The prime rib was super tender and delicious. It was the total opposite of what I was going to order but when the server shared the specials it totally derailed my healthy eating plan. I am so weak. My entree was a half rack of ribs. Meat was falling off the bone. Sauce was tangy. You have a choice of sides and brussel sprouts were the veggie du jour. My meal was very good. I also liked that entrees came with a small dinner salad. I tried their creamy garlic Parmesan dressing with which light and tasty. Service was ok. We had a bit of an issue getting our bill back in a timely manner. Our server admitted to forgetting and offered to buy us dessert but we needed to get back on the road. We love Fire Creek! It's dark and cozy with lots of booths. It's where we had some of our first dates in 2012, our rehearsal dinner in 2016, and many celebrations in between. Like any restaurant open that long, there have been ups and downs but recently it's been amazing and it's always been good service! There aren't many places that still serve salad or soup and rolls with your entree--make sure to get the house dressing or chicken tortilla soup. The entrees are amazing. I'm always torn between all three of their chicken dishes but usually end up with the Boursin chicken. For someone who doesn't like rice that much, I always get the rice pilaf for a side. It's more like a wild rice but it's so good, especially mixed with the pesto on the Boursin or marsala sauce. Speaking of the Marsala, hands down, my favorite in town. The drinks are usually on point, too, and they have a good house rose. If you haven't ever been or it's been a while, go, but I'd recommend making a reservation. read more

My opinion is that a good house-made vinaigrette would have made it an absolute winner (maybe basil or raspberry?). Cheesecake for dessert, very good. The food was great. However, the entire building is disgusting. The amount of dirt and dust on everything was really nasty. I could see dust on the decanters from across the room. The waitress was spectacular. As the night went on she kept getting new tables and she was the only one working the entire room. They needed another wait staff to help work that many tables. What I was really disappointed in the menu said one price but was rang up as a different price for a "card fee". No where ahead of time were we told the price is dependent on using a card or cash. This was not told to us until we asked about it, it was not on the menu or the website. A few other things I had noticed, besides everything being really dirty and dusty, was the wait staff garnishing the drinks and handling the straws as well as the bartender trying the drinks beforehand. You probably shouldn't try a customers drink in front of a room full of people, make a disgusted face and then send it out. Overall the food was good but will not be going back. read more

The atmosphere is warm, welcoming and dimly lit - a romantic setting. Our waiter, Chris N, was very polite and friendly! I'd request him on my next visit. We ordered the Crab Cake as an appetizer - two very well-sized and flavorful cakes arrived at our table in a timely manner. I would say the serving would feed between 2-4. There were 3 of us, and we finished them! Perfect cook on the outside crust. I ordered the Spinach and Roasted Pear Salad, and I enjoyed every bite of it. The dressing cannot be ordered on the side, but I will say it was dressed well; not overdone like so many dinner salads I've ordered elsewhere. My sister order the Salmon special. The salmon was well medium and flaked well. My mom ordered the Shrimp Diablo. She said the sauce and seasonings were a bit spicy, but she did enjoy. The dish itself had spicy chipotle butter. This restaurants offers a wide variety of items from seafood to steaks and pastas. They also offer a gluten free menu upon request. Overall, we had a great experience here. I would recommend this restaurant to friends visiting (or living) the West Des Moines area. It's located right off the interstate, easy to get to and plenty of parking. I was so very disappointed! I had their Seabass several times over the years and it was always amazing and worth the $35 for me, but not this time-not only has the price gone up to $42, there's no way this was more than 4oz of fish! My potato was 4X the size of the fish, I was in shock and asked the server about it who was embarrassed about it and his service was great, so I didn't say anything else; if management had asked me or my mother at any point how the food was, I definitely would've let them know, but no one, besides our server, checked in and they were pretty slow for a Thursday evening at 7:00, so the "manager" couldn't have been too busy? That Chef should be ashamed of himself to not bring the subject of a 4oz piece of fish for $42 up to the manager/owner?! I know our economy is rough right now and I get it, but Skips prices went up as well while still maintaining quality of food, service, and the fish covers your plate! Excellent! Great atmosphere, great service, great food! My boyfriend and I both had the seafood pasta special and we both loved it. It was packed with mussels, shrimp, calamari, etc, in a flavorful marinara sauce and served with perfectly crispy, buttery focaccia bread. Nice intimate place with a good variety on the menu. Came here for lunch and the atmosphere is quite cozy. The staff was nice and professional and the restaurant was clean. I got the 1/2 chicken salad sandwich and 1/2 house salad. The chicken salad was really good with real pieces of grilled chicken, not mystery meat or shredded which is great. The salad itself was a little wilty and I didn't realize/remember to ask for a specific dressing so it came with a thousand islands type of dressing which was okay.
