Firefly rental cars are total SCAM. We rented a car for 5 days with full cover from Booking. When we arrived they said we have to pay extra insurance plus a deposit. They gave us 4 options. After all the stress we paid an extra $300 dollars more insurance plus $2500 deposit. They said if there is any damage in the car we have to cover. Everything sounded so fishy. I was supposed to have full cover from booking. Also they did not have the car we supposedly rented. When they brought the car we saw several marks and damages. They sent me an email with "their far away pics" stating no damage. We decided to cancel everything and run far away to this awful place that took me 3 hours to rent a car!! When I came back to the US I called AMEX and dispute the charge from Booking. I am grateful I followed my instinct, canceled it and ran faster than Forrest Gump from this place and definitely I love Amex who always take care of clients. These people know we, as a client, are tired of the flight, don't know what to do and want to get done fast so we are easy to scam. My advice DON'T USE this company and if you already gave your card card # change it as soon as you arrive in the US. read more

Lets start with - the rate is cheap. But you have to add insurance. That's everywhere in Mexico for rental cars. But they give you two options. Most places don't for some reason - they just add it on at the counter like surprise!! Kinda seems like they make up the price between had the car for from days and it was less than $100 difference. Get the full coverage! Ask a lot of questions!! Is it limited mileage? How should I bring the gas back?! Why is it so much !! Even if it's not! I booked and the total was $25. When we got there the two options of insurance made it $180 and $239. We got the full coverage. The car was nice- but it had little damages. Like paint specks and a scrap you could barely see. Listen to me when I say - take details pictures. Make sure your phone or whatever has the date - iPhones have the date and time. Also they will say no it's ok we will take pictures - that's fine- let them- BUT MAKE SURE YOUR TAKE CLOSE UP PICTURES YOURSELF! Returning the car: Bring back the car a little bit before the time you picked it up. So if you picked it up at 12:15 - Drop it off at 12:00 latest! When we returned the car they were trying to say the damage was from us and they don't see it on their photos - of course not because they take pictures from like 10 feet. I took close ups! Then they tell us we'll it's gonna be $110 more because the gas is not full. We didn't get the gas full. So why would we fill the car up beyond how we get it?! They never even mentioned to bring it back full - I would of mention that it wasn't full from the jump. Overall - The service was terrible!!! We ended up missing our flight and they didn't care and they said they would bring down the price but when we left they charged us a higher price. BEWARE!! DO NOT RENT FROM FIREFLY. I wish I had read these reviews before I rented from Firefly (a.k.a. Hertz Corp.). They are the absolute WORST company I have ever, in my 72 years, dealt with!! I would give minus 100 stars if it was possible. I was travelling with my son, daughter-in-law and 5 year old Granddaughter. I had reserved online and quoted a total approximate charge of $481.80 USD. When we got to the rental counter, we decided to take the CDW @$21.00 per day which brought our total rental to $649.80. Long story short...I was charged a total of $1,479.05 when we returned the car (with a full tank of gas). When we were discussing the CDW with the rental agent, I specifically said to her, "the CDW then completely covers any damage that could happen to the car, correct?" and she said "yes". However, there is very, very, very teeny tiny fine print where you initial to accept the CDW that says there is a deductible of 20% of the value of the vehicle!! This is not the end of the story...we get in the car and start exiting the airport. Suddenly the car just stopped running and would not start, tying up a ton of traffic trying to exit the airport. There were horns beeping and people yelling at us to get out of the way. The temperature I'm guessing was in the mid to upper 80's and very sunny that day. We tried calling to have someone from the rental company come help us to no avail. We discovered that we did not have a key for the car and once it was out of range it stopped running. Finally, an airport security officer stopped and was able to get in touch with someone and they were supposed to send someone with the key. Meanwhile, my 5 year old Granddaughter was getting very overheated, I was very hot to the point of feeling ill, my son was ready to rip someone's head off and daughter-in-law was crying. It was a little over an hour before anyone came with the key but finally did and we were able to begin our vacation. They gave me back someone else's credit card, kept mine and charged my other card nearly $500 (which Thrifty had on file from when I picked up the rental car). These guys are cheats. They agreed to $80 and signed a contract to that effect then tried to charge me $200 when I returned the car because it was 9/10th full tank of gas. Worth mentioning that the gas tank gauge on the dash was some unorthodox "new age" look that was impossible to read. I was catching a flight and didn't have time to put the gallon of gas in the car (which was a different car from the one we agreed to in the airport as well) and I left in disagreement. We get there and they tell us we have 2 options, either $550 additional for full coverage insurance, or a $4k deposit on our credit card lol. What a scam. Rented a mini-van for a week recently and believe we were scammed. The rated quoted for the week was about $150 which was to include the required Mexican liability insurance. I had booked this through Travelocity and went ahead and purchased the 3rd part CDW insurance (seperate and in addition to the liability insurance) through Travelocity. Where it got "interesting" was when I arrived and was told that I could have the car as quoted (with the basic Mexican liability insurance) but with that level of insurance would have to have a pay a deposit of $26,000 USD on my credit card. Or, I could take the higher level of liability insurance for an additional charge of $150 USD and they would only place a deposit of $2,600 USD on my credit card. Having a high enough limit on my credit card I told them to go ahead and run it. When it would "not go through" I called the credit card company to let them know I was travelling in Mexico and would have a large transaction coming through. The credit card company said they had not seen any transaction or denial hit my account. While I had the credit card company on the phone I asked Firefly to run it again and again they said it was "denied". Again the credit card company confirmed no charge had been attempted and nothing showed for any transaction from that business. I had them try twice more with the same results. Having already killed quite a bit of time with this and having travelling companions waiting I relented and had them process my transaction for the higher liability insurance (and $150 USD additional charge) which was immediately successfully processed and confirmed by the credit card representative whom I still had on the phone. So, in the end I paid double the rate I was quoted at the time of reservation and got absolutely nothing in return for the additional money. Use caution when renting with this company. read more

My sister made a reservation for two cars in October. We are a large party (9 family members) after walking from the ferry to their location they told us they had no vehicles available. Terrible service, they weren't helpful at all! now we have to change all our plans and had to pay taxi cab. It's high season so there's no cars to rent with our budget.... don`t rent from this place they will add charges after you`ve been long gone. this piece of crap place added a charge of $1,066.50 us dollars to the contract that i had already paid of $210 us dollars. and said that the charge was because the vehicle broke down and i was responssible for the charges evethough i paid for insurance protection to make sure i was covered... they waited a whole month to make sure i wasn`t in mexico anymore to add the charge. i wanted to keep the contract so i wouln`t have proof of contract.. avoid this plce at all cost they will rip you off.. shame on these people... i`m dealing with my bank currently trying to have that charge taken off my credit card... avoid firefly at all cost!!! read more

They will try to scam you with huge insurance or deposit. Check with your credit card company like American Express if they provide car rental insurance in Mexico most likely they do and but they put a huge deposit on my credit card and I checked with American Express that they are OK with it. They gave me a car without any gas first of all during my rental period. Then when I drove out of firefly I realized the airbag wasn't working and the car made a beeping sound the whole time. When I returned the car I asked the Sales Exec Marco Leyva if he could waive off a 30usd upgrade for the inconvenience and he said I shouldve reported the car on the first day even though I showed him a video on my phone with the issue dated on the day the car was rented. read more

Worst rental car companie. For the insurance, I'm fully covered with my credit card as almost everybody, but they wanted to have a deposit of 13,000$ USD if I don't take their insurance. Call my bank to do the money tranfer to my credit card to have enough, but they said that the payment didn't pass despite the fact that the money was there (I was still on phone my bank, and there was no attempt to pass the payment). Finally abdicted and paid their 400$ insurance, so it cost me 1100$ instead of 700$. Will never do business again with Firefly or Hertz. read more

All of these negative reviews are 100% correct. These people WILL charge you 100s of dollars more than you expect to pay. We paid close to 600usd and we waived their BOGUS insurance...USE a travel card that has insurance and deal with an AMERICAN company if you have a problem. Somehow our contract went from 226$ initially. Thats not even the worst part.....WATCH OUT for people just outside of the airport looking for people with rentals on their way to cancun intl. They INTENTIALLY hit my car then demanded we pay them on the spot. My 6 yo boy thought it was cool, especially the car chase that followed. These guys were trying to run me off the road in the airport. The wife and daughter thought it was scary though. Firefly did nothing but charge me a bunch of money and let some scammers try to run my family off the road. Im mexican american and speak spanish, also im a 6'0 175lb man with self defence training. I cant imagine this happening to a woman or some older folks, they were very loud and trying to intimidate me. Good luck with Federal police btw.... long story long, skip the car rental in mexico. If I could give no stars I would. I used firefly in August when I went to playa de carmen. I made a reservation online and it stated the price of insurance. When I got to the office they said an error was made and they could not honor the price. So i got ripped off for the first time. So I asked them to write on the contract the total price in US dollars and they hand wrote the price and the attendant signed his name. I asked if they could type type the price and said I would be fine. When I returned the car, I asked again if the price I will be paying was the price they wrote on the contract and they said yes. When I got back to the states. I checked my credit card statement I was charged an extra $100. I called firefly corporate and they stated they would fix the price. I complained to my credit card company and they said they would investigate. So since it was hand written, the credit card company stated they could not honor the price so I got ripped off for a second time. So if you feel like donating your hard earned money to a "honest" corporation, by all means use firefly. P.S. In the facility they also try to force you to buy tickets to amusement parks and they waste your valuable time offering timeshare offers. read more

I went to Cancún in May and was supposed to be charged $211USD for the 5 days I had rented the car, they told me I had to add insurance as it was not included (according to them) it and I ended up getting billed for almost $800USD!!! Also, I had made my reservation within 2 months prior to my vacation and when I arrived to pick up the SUV that I had reserved, they told me they did no have but, and they gave me another model instead! I wish I would have looked at these reviews before my trip. I booked my car through Expedia and paid $40 extra for the extra coverage insurance which brought my total to $110, but when I arrived the guy said they do not honor and my choices were an 8k deposit, or $299 for their insurance and had a premium rate of $350 for the better coverage. I only needed the car for 4 days and...the car was at a 1/4 tank - gas in Cancun to fill up this car was expensive @ 1060 pesos (US-60 average dollars). I wish I could have rejected the car but I felt trapped and did not want to take a shuttle back to the airport and be back to square one. I tried to call Expedia, but of course the 1-800 # will not work in Mexico. I had rented a car before in Mexico but it was outside of the airport places so maybe that could be a better option. In the future I will just go the route of taxis as I paid approx $100 per day and the stress and headache is not worth it. My car receipt has a 19% airport fee, 6% license fee, 16% tax, 4.5% transaction fee, "premium roadside assistance" and another insurance deductible. I feel scammed but was fortunate I had no further headaches when I returned the car. read more

I am actually reviewing Firefly Car Rental (by the way they are owned by Herzt Renal Cars) in Playa Del Carmen ( Local 6, Avenida 10 Norte entre 14 y 16, Centro, 77710 Playa del Carmen, Q.R.) This is a warning to anyone who reserved online. in my case I booked through Orbitz. The agreed upon amount was $92.00 USD. I always us my American Express Gold Card to pay for rental cars as it covers the insurance and saves me money, even though there is a yearly fee for AmEx. However, when I arrived I was given the choice to either put a deposit of $14,000.00 USD down or I would have to purchase their "special" brand new insurance called "SLE" insurance (If I'd had THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS for their deposit, which I did not this would have made me double insured, if not a losser as I doubt I'd have gotten my cash back. Paying this would have also brought my total fees to over 4 times the original agreed upon price at Orbitz.com. I have been renting cars in Mexico on several ocations and never had this issue. Perhaps a $200-300.00 deposit, which is fine, but not $13,000. Well we did not rent this car and took a taxi to a hotel to regroup even though we had intended not to stay the night in Cancun. Later on from what other people we have met have told us this is primarily in Playa and will not happen if you rent at the Cancun airport, and did not happen while renting in Tulum a few years ago. That said I am choosing a 1 star for the company and if I could I'd select 5 star for the the two customer service reps, Fernando and Miguel, who were simply following company protocol and made what would have been a very disappointing change of plans (as there was no way we could pay that amount or provide that deposit) they helped us to find a hotel and gave us a ride even! Amazing guys. The policy is horrible and should be changed or at least one should know ahead so to make an educated decision of whether or not to rent from them. read more

STAY AWAY FROM FIREFLY. I had a reservation with Firefly Cancun Airport with rate guaranteed. The quotation included rates for various optional insurance coverages. We were met at the arrival hall, escorted to the van and driven to the Firefly office very efficiently. The problem started there. Jesus Hernandez, who called himself a manager, stated that the reservation is only to get us to their office, they do not recognize quoted rate and will charge what they want, also we must pay for insurance or they will require US$6000 security deposit on credit card. He troughed different numbers on us, but refused to provide us with the written agreement that we can understand what are the charges. When I insisted on reading the break down of charges, he refused to rent us a car and kicked us out of the office. We got a car from another company. read more

Car rental agent warned us: if gap is not completely full, we will be charged a full tank of xxx thousand pesos. Are we declining his offer of purchasing the full tank for a mere hundred dollars? Good luck at the *only* gas station nearby! That gave us sufficient anxiety to last a whole trip. Upon car return, we drove to the nearest gas station within the airport complex, and waited for 25 min to get to the pump with 1 hr to go before flight. The gas station attendant leisurely filled the gas tank, took our credit card and ID away for a minute then returned to day it was declined. We have him another card. It went through. We sighed with relief and rushed to the gate. Landed in the U.S. and turned on the cell phone. 6 credit card charge alerts await us, 1 from a gas station, 5 from CHEDRAUI CANCUN FRISA CAN, for a grand total of USD 1,438.65! Can this really be allowed to happen at a tourism destination like Cancun? You're destroying your own future, guys. For peanuts really, in the grand scheme of things. read more
