This Marlborough institution is probably the only BBQ joint in all of Massachusetts. It was a pretty solid meal. We came here for a party and a buffet was set up. The buffet contained tender smokey delicious brisket and pulled pork. Along with fluffy cornbread and rolls for the meat. The service was friendly and timely. They were a little slow at getting our plates. What really impressed me was the wall of hot sauces. These were the rows Are you Insane?! Could peel paint! Pretty Hot Mild I took one from the top. The food at this restaurant is phenomenal- we drove this weekend a half hour each way just to get takeout. When the person who took our order made an Oopsie, I had filed a complaint within their internal system and I am blown away by how above and behind their management handled it. They called and left voicemails for the past two days until the owner personally called me to handle the issue and apologize. My sister worked in PR for Danny Meyer for many years, so I got to see an inside look at how one of the most famous restaurateurs handles customer service, and what I experienced here would have made Danny proud. Solid BBQ spot with a huge menu and tons of seating. They take reservations, but as long as you aren't bringing a big party you seem to be able to get seats. The food is across the board good, but not quite great. Still, consistency is worth something. We went with a combo plate that had smoked Texas sausage, BBQ chicken, and pulled pork. The sausage was my favorite and the menu implies that it's made in Texas, but points for choosing well. The chicken and pork were moist and pretty flavorful, but I thought their sauces tended a bit towards the sweeter side. For sides we got BBQ beans, cuke salad, and home made chips. The cuke salad was great, basically fresh, slightly sweet/spicy pickles. The beans and chips were decent, but both lacked any punch. Found this place by accident and we couldn't be happier that we did. Our server Nick was awesome! As first time guests to Firefly's, he took the time to explain the many different sauce options they had and also his favorite dishes. We shared a few different plates. But we started with the Firefly 's Jumbo Wings with the honey cayenne sauce. The wings had the perfect amount of Smokey flavor and sauce. The Southern Porked Mac ' N Cheese was absolutely delicious. When the plate was set down we thought it looked a little dry but it definitely was not. And finally we had the 3 meat combo with fried chicken, brisket and ribs. Nick recommended the Dixie Kiss sauce, we went with it, glad we did. Whatever you do make sure to try the sweet Sweet Potato Pecan Pudding, it's dessert with your meal. I will agree with others who have mentioned the quality control varies ... sometimes this place is AMAZING and other times it tastes like opening a container of BBQ in the refridgerated section of the grocery store. I think the earlier you go, the better shot you have at a good experience because the food will be fresher. It seems like most times I have gone here and been dissapointed was later in the afternoon/early evening. The early times I've gone, it was GREAT stuff and tasted fresh and amazing. If you are a big eater ... the Sunday Brunch is worth it. Seriously, wear your sweatpants because it seems like everything on the menu is available during the buffet style brunch. BBQ is not exactly light food ... so you will leave full! However, make sure to call for a reservation because it fills fast for good reason! Tonight, I went in after an incident with the hostess at the Wayside Inn and got an average meal. In fairness to Fireflies, this is not the south ... so when you go into a BBQ joint in New England at 7 p.m. ... you aren't going to get incredibly fresh. I decided to be boring and got the pulled pork sandwich with Memphis style sauce (again). (Memphis is the tomato based sweet sauce). The pork didn't seem fresh at all ... kind of mushy as if it had been sitting a while and scooped from under a heat lamp. The bun was disgraceful ... a flattened hamburger bun. I've had their pulled pork before and it was absolutely juicy and great. Tonight ... it was just blah. The couple next to me were raving about their ribs ... so I guess that might have been what I should have ordered. The standout tonight was the macaroni and cheese. I paid $1 extra to get this instead of the steak fries and it was amazing. Cheesy and good ... I almost ordered another side dish of it after the meal! The Cole Slaw was blah and watery. But the pickle salad or cucumber salad they bring out before the meal is seriously one of my new favorite things. If you love pickles ... you have to try this stuff. If they sold it by the quart ... I'd have taken one home. The sauces here are okay ... they are more on the sweet ketchup-y side ... I prefer a South Carolina mustard based sauce on my BBQ but they only do the North Carolina vinegar based. Oh well. The Memphis is good enough for a New England BBQ joint ... if you like a sweeter sauce with brown sugar ... you'll like the sauces here. In no way are you going to compare this to real southern BBQ and have it measure up. But, for Massachusetts ... the only place I'd rank higher is B.T.'s Smokehouse in Sturbridge, MA. Another good thing about Fireflies is that there are a lot of options outside of the BBQ. The buttermilk fried chicken fingers are pretty much awesome ... and they make New Orleans style Po' Boys as well. Which means you can bring your non-BBQ loving friends here without owing them one. The desserts shouldn't be missed ... the bread pudding was featured on TV shows it is so good. (Although not a fan of them adding the banana). They also make an awesome Red Velvet Cake, which I'm always bummed when I have no room for it. And a S'More cake. I've never tried the banana cream pie ... but I'm sure Elvis would have loved it. Price-wise its a little more than your average BBQ joint in MA. But still affordable for a family ... or for teenagers (who seem to love this place). I wouldn't eat here every day ... but the brunch should not be missed. And if you have a craving for BBQ in the Sudbury area, Fireflies is pretty good. I did host an event here one time for my company and have to say that I would not do it again. It was very unorganized and chaotic. I felt like I was running the show both in my company's presenatation and having to chase down people to run the food part of the show as well. For what they charge for corporate functions, I expected a better job. But ... despite the service hiccups ... the food was great and that is what everyone talked about. At 10pm most of the restaurants in this area close. I was driving from NH to Hartford and searched YELP for a restaurant that wasn't fast food and was open for a late night bite. Firefly's was a 10-minute drive off the interstate. When I arrived there were a few people eating in the bar. I chose, however, to be the solo table in the dining room. After my first bite the quality of the BBQ was clear. If you're from New England I'm sure you'll think it's incredible. If you've ever been to the South or the Great Plains (TX, OK, KS, etc) you'll think it's average. Personally, I thought it was ok, at best, but that could have been a reflection of the meats all being cold when they arrived. Disclaimer: it was after 10pm. Meanwhile, if you're going to continue to serve meals quality shouldn't deteriorate as crowds dissipate. One thing that is impressive is the portions. Firefly's piles the meat on the plate. Meanwhile, value doesn't stand tall. It cost me $30 (with tip) to have a three-meat combo (and to try and small side of sweet potato pudding). I had a water, not a soft drift. This was some of the most overpriced BBQ I've ever eaten. Sadly, the quality was so poor I left more than half of it. The waitress urged me to take it home due to the amount I left on the plate, but the lack of quality didn't warrant that. I ordered a combo with brisket, a quarter chicken and smoked turkey. The brisket was the best and although dry it did have some flavor. The chicken looked awesome, but didn't have much meat on it and with almost all bones I took a bite and moved on. The turkey was dry. I took a few bites of each and asked for the check. The mixed veggies were much better than the meat. The mash potatoes tasted like normal. The cornbread was fair, but the side order of sweet potato pudding was bland. I took one bite and slid it back toward the middle of the table. While Firefly's might be good BBQ in the Northeast it wouldn't last in the South. Keep in mind, I'm rating it based upon the more than 300 BBQ places I've eaten at the US, not the others nearby. I wasn't impressed with the quality of meat or the price, but few can complain about the sauces, which are tasty. read more

made the drive from worcester and it was absolutely worth it!! our server was very attentive and helpful, and we found out there that you're able to sample all of their homemade bbq sauces for free! the waffle n chicken was amazing, the chicken tasted amazing and the texture was perfect. the waffle itself tasted great and was very fluffy. i went with the syrup, and it complimented the waffle very well. the mac and cheese was creamy and so delicious. the french fries were crispy, and i definitely recommend getting them with their memphis ranch dressing. the cornbread itself was great as well. will be coming back :) read more

I found out about Fire Fly's from the phantom gourmet television show so I definitely had to give this place a try. My first instinct after walking through the doors were "This place look very dull. It doesn't look like it'll be a BBQ restaurant". I guess that's why people say "looks are very deceiving". The host and server were very nice and welcoming. Oh, and I do recommend to book a reservation first before coming here. It was very pack. After finally getting seated to our table. There were so much delicious food that caught our eyes. We ordered the pulled out pork mac & cheese as a starter and let me tell you, that is definitely a must try! It was absolutely delicious! We also order the chicken & waffle and the BBQ ribs as an entrees. Everything we ordered was delicious. The ribs were so tender and juicy. OMG!! This place has AWESOME BBQ!!! And keep in mind, I'm from the south and am hyper critical of BBQ joints. The wings are fresh and huge!! Pulled pork and ribs smoked to perfection and fall off the bone. The sides were OK - but I really liked their fried pickles. The coleslaw, cornbread, and potato salad were just OK - and they would have gotten 5 stars from me if these were better - they were just OK. But the pig and bird were delightful!! Great establishment, walked in and was pleasantly greeted by a host who guided my guest and I to our outdoor seating location. Pickles were served on the house; we enjoyed the taste of these. We ordered the calamari appetizer and beer flight. One problem with the beer flight.. I received guiness instead of yuengling but who's complaining right? I've known Steve since he started the old Tennessee's barbecue in Framingham, which was top notch until Steve sold his interest and opened up Fire Flies in Marlborough. Tennessee's BBQ is a far cry from the standard that Steve set when he opened it many years ago. Tennessee's is mediocre on its best day. The company's current owner's have run the quality into the ground since Steve left. If you want top-notch barbecue that will satisfy and not let you down, go to Fire Flies BBQ in Marlborough. Consistently good service, if not as attentive as would be ideal. Large dining areas can handle large crowds, but I'd avoid big dining days like Mother's Day. Ribs are usually my go-to BBQ item here. I can't remember ever being disappointed with the smoke flavor (without needing sauce). It's fun to look over the hot sauces and choose an interesting bottle to try. We've eaten here several times in the past, and we've been to events they have catered. It's always been excellent. This is the best BBQ place I know of in MA. This place is so hit or miss. On it's best days it's easily a 5. I smoke my own BBQ but when I want a break or a quick meal I head here. Their Ribs can be absolutely fall off the bone fantastic...or they can be dry and chewy. Sometimes meat can be chewy but it's like every other time. Brisket was tender but super fatty. By the time I trimmed it there was half a portion. Corn bread is great, sides are great. Take out service is terrible. No quality control to speak of. I've picked up from there a few times and they've always. left something out. One time they left out a whole tray of meat. I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt because, it's New England not the south and we really need BBQ. read more

Cucumber salad and pulled pork is my go-to however the brisket is hands down the best brisket ever!

First off - we were hesitant about trying in-door dining for the first time in ages, but we heard this place was taking good precautions. We did some research and they let us make reservation for two parties of four to celebrate a birthday. From start to finish, it was clear they were prioritizing safety and all COVID regs. Parking was a little confusing but it was clear they were keeping groups from being in contact with each other. Now onto the fun part - the food! I love BBQ and this place had a great selection. We did a bunch of appetizers which were all great. The entrees were also great. I had a bodacious bbq bowl that was amaaaazing! Great brisket with Mac and cheese, and other delicious stuff in a big bowl. I took half home but dreamt of the other half all night. The kids had a bunch of deserts - all delicious. The staff were super friendly and very well trained. I can't wait to go back here post Covid as they had a stage for live music and that combo can't be beat.
