I tried the key lime pie again along with the coconut guava cake slice. The key lime was as tart as I remembered but there was a slightly grainy texture that I didn't remember before. Still good. The coconut guava cake is a bit too dense for my liking. It has cream cheese frosting so on the richer side. I also sampled the red velvet cheesecake ice cream (not as rich as I expected, it was good!) and the chocolate cake, which was a little bland strangely as I kept tasting it. Fireman Derek's was okay -- we tried the key lime pie (of course) and the grasshopper for a little mint to cool things down. In both cases, the flavors were muted, and the base for each slice had a thin texture. To be fair, we had decadent key lime pie all along the actual Keys the previous few days, so maybe we're being a bit harsh. The key lime slice didn't taste especially sour or sweet. Most other slices commit to a flavor profile, while this one seemed content to split the difference and hide in the background. Likewise, the grasshopper didn't taste minty, but instead like someone waved a few mint leaves above the base, while someone else dropped in green food coloring. I can't help but compare this to a chain, with a formulaic approach to pies that makes them taste a little less authentic and a little less robust than the more unique restaurants. Whether it's after a local yelp event or dinner somewhere or even just passing by, i always find myself adding Fireman Derek as a stop to grab some slices of pie. I have tried most of their pies but nothing beats the banana cream pie and the pecan pie. Absolutely delicious. They have many options to choose from but they do run out quite often by evening which sucks, but all their pies are good so if you don't find the pie you want, try another flavor. The coconut, the caramel, the pecan, all of them. They are all delicious. The have many tables to sit inside and enjoy the pie. I haven't had their cookies but i'd love to. When I arrived in the morning, it was empty with the exception of a family who left almost the same time as I got in. The shop is spacious and the walls are adorably painted with sprinkles and cakes making it a quirky pastry shop vibe. The woman behind the counter was friendly and recommended me some of her favorite desserts from behind the display case. I got the guava coconut rum cake and the key lime pie slice. The key lime pie had a rich and creamy consistency with a pleasant sourness and sweetness. While it's my first time having key lime pie, it is what I would expect it to taste like. The guava coconut rum cake was even better with the moist cake and decadent coconut cream and guava jelly. My personal preference has me reaching for the guava coconut rum cake. As delicious as these treats are, they are quite dense and really expensive for ~$8 a pie slice and ~$12 a cake slice. The pie and cake slices are pretty big and since they are dense, you can share each slice with multiple people. So as expensive as they are, they are expensive for good reason and the quality speaks for itself. read more

Recently named the "Best Bakery in South Florida", Fireman Derek's has become somewhat of a Miami institution, founded by former firefighter and D1-football player Derek Kaplan. Located on the outskirts of the artful and eccentric neighborhood of Wynwood, the bakery is located in a fire-engine red building decorated with a fun neon sign of Derek's face. The interior is just as colorful, with a large glass case displaying a plethora of decadent baked goods that have propelled this chain to fame (seriously, Derek's bakes are all over Instagram, TikTok, and various other social media platforms because of a) the shock value, and b) the amazing taste). We had a party of four girls, and we decided to split a slice of their famous Cookie Monster Pie ($9.25/slice), which is a cheesecake-based pie made with a chocolate chip crust and layer of crushed oreo cookies and finished off with pralines, whipped cream, chopped chocolate chip cookies, caramel and Ghirardelli chocolate sauce. It was a sizable piece of pie (I'd say good to split amongst 2-4 people), and truly decadent. The cookie crust was ooey-gooey, sweet, and buttery, and the cheesecake had that signature tartness with generous chunks of Oreos studded throughout. However, we found that there was too much whipped cream on top compared to the other layers of the pie, but that was a small critique. The chopped chocolate chip cookies on top were also a lovely touch! Overall, we enjoyed our slice of pie at Fireman Derek's, although I'd have to say that some of the bakery's fame is attributable to the sheer "shock value" that some of their bakes entail in terms of sheer decadence bordering on gluttony ("S'mores Brownies", anyone?) - but hey, we're not judging. Yes, most of their items are on the pricier side, but I think you're paying for the novelty of said items, as well as the Miami premium. I have been a loyal customer of FIREMAN DEREK's since the first store opened. I have enjoyed many of your baked products , including crackpies, guava cookies, and Oreo cheesecake pies. However, my experience at the WYNWOOD store today has left me deeply disappointed and motivated to never return. The lack of respect and civility displayed by your manager was truly unacceptable. I arrived at the store and ordered a few items, including a slice of "CRACKPIE". I took a bite while and immediately realized that the pie was stale and frozen. I explained to the manager that the pie was not fresh and didn't taste right. Her response was dismissive and arrogant. She claimed that they didn't get fresh pies because they were delivered twice or three times a week and that they had three stores, so they couldn't possibly have fresh pies every day. This attitude was unnecessary , especially for a simple question. It doesn't even make sense: since FIreman Derek's have 3 stores, shouldn't they be able to deliver fresh products ? you have Specially I had paid for a fresh piece of pie, and I didn't expect to be served something frozen and unappetizing. If the pies are not FRESH, please put up signs !!! It's only fair with the customer to know they are not paying for fresh pie. When I asked what I could do about the situation, I offered to get another product to substitute. After she cut the slice, to my shock, she asked me to pay for it. As a side note, the full pie I had purchased and paid for was already in the trash. She asked me if I was going to eat it, and I said no, so she put it in the trash bin. She insisted that she couldn't give me "free food," but the point is that it wasn't free. I had paid for something and didn't get what I paid for. Any decent business would try to make a customer happy, especially a loyal one. This manager turned her back on me the moment I asked for her name and went to the back of the store, never to return. If you don't want to run out of business maybe you should be more concerned with keeping customers, perhaps you should be more cautious about who you hire as a manager and make decisions on your behalf.
