My first ever hike that I took 16 years ago in Vegas. I took there so many friends, I took there husband when we were dating and now my kids. It never fails, it's super easy and in the spring so beautiful when snow is melting and provides creek with water. In A Nutshell: -First Creek Trail is nice little out & back trail system 8 miles down the road, just outside Red Rock Canyon. -You will may see some wild donkeys grazing if you keep scanning your environment. -The trail is dog friendly. -You will engage in various terrain consisting of both desert, shrubs, trees & water in the creek. -The sound of fresh water flowing is nice, especially when you don't hear it over human voices. It was a cold, gloomy, and chilly day for a hike. However, I went and walked with a few different women, and it turned out great. The trail can be accessed from the side of the park, which means no parking or park fee, which was a plus to me. The trail start was not hard to find, but a long the hike, we kinda got lost for a bit. We're so hopeful to find the waterfall at the end, but we found a pond of water with water dribbling from the upper level of the area. Took us about 2.5 hours back and forth. There are donkeys and different birds to see and appreciate. Overall, the hike was fairly easy, I think kids and fur friends can do it. read more

We hiked First Creek Trail for the first time today. I love Red Rock and was excited to learn about this trail with the possibility of finding water in the creek. There is a good amount of parking at the start of the trail and easy to find on GPS. The hike starts off with a well established gravel path and then veers off several times that you could follow a path and see where it leads you. We made it to the top nearly two mile hike but did have a hard time finding our path to get back down. After a few twists and turns, we made it to the creek and was excited to see that beauty in the middle of the desert! We saw lizards and chipmunks and rabbit along our journey. First creek trail is a nice family-friendly hike and a FREE alternative to the expensive Red Rock state park. We visited late afternoon which is probably the ideal time to go. It's 3.4 miles total (there and back) on a basically flat trail. - Just look for the cars parked alongside the road about 5 miles south of Red Rock state park. - There's a waterfall during the winter/spring months. Read the Yelp Tips to get the exact location. - No shade, so dress appropriately. - Very picturesque sunsets. Places to eat and drink nearby: - Dutch Bros is not too far away. Great coffee and cold drinks. - Sharky's Moden Coastal Cuisine. We had a casual dinner here and enjoyed ourselves. So much cheaper than buying food on the strip. read more

This was my second time doing this hike. First time was like pulling teeth because I'm not the outdoorsy type. But because it's such an easy, accessible and family friendly hike, I was all in the second time around. It's a fun, mostly flat, 3 mile round trip workout! We went on a cool February morning, I think it was 64 degrees, so being from Hawaii, it called for a light jacket!For my ten year old nephew and seventeen year old son, it was a challenging enough trek to work up a good appetite! The photo ops here are awesome with the beautiful red rock mountains as the backdrop. There is also a little creek with a waterfall at the turn around. My sister who lives in Vegas says I need to do the trail in the spring because all the colorful flowers are in bloom then. read more

Easy, scenic hike. Hidden waterfall. Right off the main road to red rock, lies the First Creek hiking trail. We parked in the dirt and walk a few steps to the trailhead. The intial trail takes you through 1 mile of the beautiful mojave desert landscape, slightly uphill. Spring time includes the colors of blooming flowers (orange, purple, yellow). 1 mile into the hike, you'll notice a red "X" on a rock ahead, and 2 large trees (one on the left and right). Go right, you'll find the hidden waterfall, and left you'll continue on course through the edge of the mountain and into the valley. Free and very easy trail. Even the weather is great it was pretty hot out. Red rock has more fun trails than this straight simple trail but isn't free of course. We have a park pass however were forced to this off road free trails as due to covid19 parks are still closed. It is easy simple and dogs are welcome. Park on side of the road. TIPS: + This trail is outside of Red Rock, so it's free. Just find a spot to park after you pass the trail marker, and head out! + If you time your visit right, you'll actually see the creek. + There's a waterfall to find, if you don't mind going off the usual trail and following directions in other reviews/sites. + It's a pretty easy trail and clearly marked, both dogs and kids can handle this. Don't expect a great workout. + Out and back, so you can go as far as you want. + A park ranger friend told me this was a good option for a night hike, haven't tried it in the dark yet. NOTE: Apparently a lot of people go off trail, and they don't always follow the "leave no trace" rule. I brought back several empty 40s to recycle at home. Not cool. read more

This spot is amazing after a rainfall because the rock beds flow with the run off and makes for a beautiful hike! It has beautiful views of the mountains and there are plenty of birds and butterflies to see as well. It's relatively flat and has plenty of spots to stop for shade. Wear some solid shoes because most of the trail is pretty rocky. read more

Beautiful and flat trail to hike in the winter, spring, and fall. I would not recommend hiking this trail in the summertime because there is absolutely no shade and you're completely exposed to the sun. Plus, the creek is pretty much nonexistent during the summertime anyway. If you go in the spring, you may even be able to enjoy the little waterfall! read more

Park on the side of the road. Go thru the fence and follow the clearly marked path. Took us about 55 minutes one way with a few stops by the creek. Probably 30 minutes back to the car. Beautiful views of Red Rock for free. No bathrooms. Bring water, it gets warm. read more

Since the first time I hiked this trail in 2006, I have always enjoyed hiking in First Creek whether it's just a short trip to the waterfall and back or a more serious exploration going farther back into the canyon. There's something for everyone here. It's a fairly level hike for a good part of the way so it's fine for dogs and kids. After crossing the wash from the parking lot, simply follow the trail as it meanders toward the canyon. After the waterfall, there are several routes you can take. You can stay in the wash when it's dry and do some rock scrambling and boulder hopping. This is a slower way but it's a lot more challenging. If you want to go a little easier on yourself, follow one of the trails out of the wash on the south side of the canyon and hike the use trail until you a forced back into the wash. If you want, you can keep going and end up in Pahrump if you really want to. The rock scrambling and boulder hopping are good fun but you should only do this if you're wearing hiking boots so you have the proper traction on what can be slick rocks. Sneakers just don't do it sometimes. Give First creek a try. I think you'll like it, too. read more

Even traveling this trail in the hot Summer month of June is a treat. Just make sure you pack lots of water for a couple reasons 1. You won't really see any water on this trail during summer. 2. It's hot. Like REALLY hot. The trail itself is fairly flat most of the way and marked with green spray paint to help keep you on the trail. We stayed to the left when the trail split and made our way toward the greenery. We found ourself walking along the creek as we got further in and found a little pool of water below the trees and some large rocks. We saw wild flowers, geckos, grasshoppers, and frogs. They may have been toads? I don't know. I'm not a biologist. It was a beautiful area to explore and I would recommend it to anyone of any skill level. read more

First Creek Canyon (FCC) is vastly becoming one of my favorite free locations for a low impact hike. It's easy to find if you just look for the markers. There is a solid foot path for hikers of all stamina. There's the ability to either stay on a designated pathway or veer off to explore your own trail. Negatives include no restroom facilities at the parking area and you may encounter wild burros along the way; which I have yet to see any. There's plenty of evidence they exist by the numerous piles of feces. Bring your cameras Drinking water Sunglasses Sunblock Perhaps a hat And solid ankle support shoes as there are loose rocks along the path. This is a great side location to avoid fees at the main "loop" for red rock and just to explore and get a good brisk walk in. I also expect to see more UYE's here in the future. First Creek Trail - Markers for First Creek Canyon - Hiking Near Me - Las Vegas, Nevada

I fell short of finding the First Creek Waterfall. I found solitude. Whether or not the First Creek Waterfall Trail hiker finds the waterfall, they will find a memorable desert hike. The desert landscape is candy to the eyes. Every progression forward brings the hiker closer to the Spring Mountains. Picture postcard views. To the north, Red Rock Canyon is visible. Gradually the trail develops into deeper greenery, and the elevation to the north is lower. From my observation this is First Creek. But where is the waterfall? I'd take a few detours to the north to look for it. These detours rewarded my eyes with a gentle stream and ears with a flowing rhythm made for a Back to Nature CD. I stopped after the wilderness area pole and where the trail developed into rocks. I obviously exceeded the distance posted for the trail proper. Just like another hiker mentioned, it is possible that the waterfall is nonexistent at this time. Regardless that I failed to find the First Creek Waterfall, I did not feel letdown. In my eyes, this is similar to experiencing Disneyland and feeling letdown when an attraction is closed. No big deal. Regardless, signage would be appreciated. Wildlife is plentiful. Looking to the north, I was rewarded with a couple of burros. Throughout the hike I'd see an abundance of birds and lizards. The hike is by no means difficult. Still be cautious. Walking to the creek requires walking down a rocky path. Segments of the trail are rocky. And there is the occasional branch to duck. First Creek Waterfall Trail is contiguous to Spring Mountain Ranch State Park. I parked at Spring Mountain Ranch State Park ($7), and walked the relatively short distance northbound on Route 159 to the trail head. My reasoning was the perception that my vehicle was safer, an extended hike, a guarantee of finding a parking spot, and the possibility of additional hiking in Spring Mountain Ranch State Park. For an even better experience, I recommend combining First Creek Waterfall Trail with the adjacent Spring Mountain Ranch State Park. On the open desert segment of First Creek Waterfall Trail, you will see Spring Mountain Ranch State Park to the south. Look for a trail that goes to the south. On my way back, I discovered that it feeds into Spring Mountain Ranch State Park. This is where I saw the most birds and least people. I rate First Creek Waterfall Trail 4 stars for the experience. And 4 stars for burning over 500 calories on a hike combined with Spring Mountain Ranch State Park. read more

Easy hike, beautiful vistas, pretty rocks, small stream. That's the review in a nutshell. This is a good intro hike for the Red Rock Canyon area. It's a 3+ mile out-and-back that runs from the roadside across the valley floor to the mouth of a canyon. The trail is wide and easy, with a slight incline all the way out. As you get closer to the canyon, it starts to get narrower and branch off into a bunch of different directions. If your goal is to make it to the mouth of the canyon, it doesn't really matter which one you take, they all converge back at the canyon. If you want to find the waterfall, you supposedly turn right at the first tree. We didn't seek it out, but instead headed for the canyon mouth. It gets a little more scramble-y as you get close to the canyon mouth, but the views keep getting better and better. Along the way you're exposed to sweeping views across the canyon floor, with the red rocks to the north, commanding cliffs to the west, the road and gypsum mines back to the east, and valley/mountains to the south. On a nice day, you can see for miles and miles. Our group included folks from 40-78 years in age, and everyone did just fine. Trail is a mix of sand/dirt and rocks. Because it's an out-and-back, whenever the scramble gets to be too much, just turn around. Rock climbing up in the canyon is a thing. You can fly drones here, and the topology is worth it. We didn't see any wild horses or burros (dammit!) but did see a woodpecker. Cold winter though, so I'm sure all the animals were camped out somewhere else. 5/5 would hike again! read more

I went out here as part of a UYE with Norm as our guide. It is a super easy hike with great views and a beautiful waterfall and pool at the end. It's a nice place to just sit on the boulders in the shade, relax and chat. We started at 8am and the trail head was very crowded when we got back to the parking around 9am so get there early! read more

LEASH YOUR DOGS! This hike, or walk I should say is absolutely breathtaking. A little over a mile in, there is a small stream to the right where my dog and I played in the water. The water is fresh water and cool, so it's really refreshing to walk in or to let your dog run around in. At the very front of the entrance, there is a sign that says that ALL DOGS MUST BE ON A LEASH. Follow the rules people! My dog is such a sweet dog but she is a little aggressive towards other dogs. This couple's dogs (off leash) came running up to my dog who is going crazy at this point. I ask the couple nicely to please call their dog back, and said thank you when they did. However, the dogs did not listen and continued to run towards my dog, which made my dog break out of her leash! After reminding the couple that their dogs are supposed to be on a leash, the boyfriend cursed us out. They knew very well that they were breaking the rules... The rule is SIMPLE. If you can't follow rules and leash your dog, go back to kindergarten and learn to follow rules. Just because my dog is reactive to other dogs, does not mean that she isn't allowed to go out and have fun like any other dog. I had no other problems besides this couple. There were a couple of other people walking their dogs, but they were all on leashes as well. read more

I've been living in Vegas for almost 17 years now and over that time, I gradually began to appreciate the immense beauty of the desert...dry or wet! My most recent hike to First Creek Trail was a couple of days after some heavy rain...and it was magical. This is a perfect short hike if you have 60-90min to soak in some comfortable time with nature. There is not much scrambling to do, rather just mosey along a relatively flat trail that takes you away from the road and towards the canyons. Due to the recent rains, we encountered quite an oasis on this most recent hike. There is a small waterfall that was engorged by the heavy rain. This is a great short hike for many reason, not the least of which is its accessibility. If you are heading out of Vegas on Charleston you simply drive a couple miles past the Red Rock Canyon Loop entrance and come to a marked parking area for the First Creek Trailhead...I love that you can avoid the time it takes to drive around the loop, as well as avoiding the entrance fees--making for a great hike on a shorter time frame. For some avid hikers this hike may be way too boring, but for our family, it was a perfect way for us to welcome in the spring season. -2017 Review #20- read more

How did we miss the waterfall!!? Great "free hike". We ventured off the path a bit to explore. The only animal we saw was some sort of chipmunk. It's a shame that the trail is FULL of garbage (& bags of dog waste). At the entrance of the trail, we didn't even see a trash can, so there was just a heap of litter there. Watch out for constant horse or burro droppings on your path. Now we will have to venture back to see this waterfall. This is an easy hike in my opinion. read more

If you're looking for a short, quick hike near Red Rock First Creek Waterfall is one of the best. It is easy to find the trail head since there is a sign and small parking area (it is located between Bonnie Springs and the Oak Creek trail head)...but it is not as easy to find the pool and waterfall itself. The waterfall is not really a waterfall, just a short little drop into a pool. The pool offers a vastly different array of vegetation...as does the creek just upstream. It is always wonderful to see a literal oasis in the desert! Go in the early spring or after a good rain. The pool is little hard to find the first time. Anything as beautiful as Red Rock automatically gets 5 stars! Yesterday, I led a small group to White Pinnacle Peak, the leftmost pointy peak on Mt. Wilson. Trail begins at First Creek and meanders towards the red ridge line....then up the leftmost gully directly underneath the pointy peak. Yesterday was my third time summitting White Pinnacle and it was every bit as fun as my previous two hikes. While the actual First Creek trail is easy, the climbing up to my destination yesterday is not. Lots of bouldering, scrambling, and exposure. However, there is something for everyone in Red rock; use common sense, bring water/snacks/sunscreen/hat, and go with a buddy. read more

Maintained well or had nothing much to maintain, it's nature. You can't hold things like burro droppings against a hiking trail. Ok so the hiking trail for First Creek Canyon starts just north of the Bonnie Springs entrance. There's a little designated parking area off the west side of the road, which I only noticed because there were a couple cars and a couple cop cars there. There is a map and some information about the trail before you enter. If your coming from the south of Las Vegas you can get here by heading west on Blue Diamond. If your coming from the north head west on Charleston. It's a free hike. This is a simple trail though we didn't do the whole trail, it seemed that way. It was pretty flat. One of the things I like doing while taking hikes is doing it barefoot. I probably wouldn't do it here, burro droppings. Nice trail for pets, kids, elders, everyone just make sure you take to normal precautions when playing in the sun. First time out we failed to find the "waterfall". Second time out BINGO, well not really. You'll see a fork in the trail where there seems to be a line of medium sized rocks blocking the right side of the fork, follow the trail to the left. Continue until you see a nice green and bushy tree at the left on the trail, there are some carving in the trunk of the tree. A nice spot to take a break in the shade. At the free you'll see another fork in the trail, take the right path and you should find the top of the cliff where water would fall for the waterfall. Follow the trail right of the cliff to hike down to the water level, you'll see some pretty cool looking large rocks. Watch your step going down. Watch out for mosquitoes. First Creek Trail is a 3.6 mile lightly trafficked out and back trail located on Red rock canyon in Las Vegas, NV. My friends and I came out here this morning. It is my third time here. My friend bought her dog and he got cactus on his paws so put dog shoes on them. This is a nice, well marked good trail for kids and dogs. There is only a slight incline on the way in, which made the way out very easy with a nice downgrade as we hiked out. The trail gets pretty bumped as well with large rocks on portions of the trail, but easily to navigate.The trail is very wide for most of it, so the other people hiking along side can move around. We heard lots of wildlife. When we got to the end the creek was dry. The other times we saw a nice creek with ice cold, clear water. The hike is about a mile across the flat desert snd before the mouth of the canyon when you get to the very first tree turn 90 degrees to your right and walk about 100ft to reach the hidden waterfall. There is a wide path to the top of the fall. Reaching the base of the waterfall requires some scrambling. But this time it was dry but nonetheless, we had a good exercise, nice weather and beautiful scenery. read more

First Creek Trail The trailhead to First Creek Trail is located off Route 159 south of the Red Rock Loop exit and just passed the Oak Creek Trail parking. According to the information posted for this trail, the total distance round-trip is 3 miles. But according to my GPS, the actual trail round-trip is closer to 3.5 miles. This is an easy hike with little to no inclines. This is a perfect hike for beginners or for anyone looking for a leisure walk. During the summer may be a different story since there isn't shade until you reach the canyon. I didn't realize that there is hidden waterfall off the trail. Yelper, hiker, and friend aka Norm K. showed us the way. Take a right when you reach the fork in the path. The main trail will lead you to the canyon. The trails to the right will lead you to the waterfall. Hike about 30 yards towards the creek. Head towards the trees and you'll reach the small, hidden waterfall. read more

Loved every minute of it! Each time we got closer I just had to look up and I still couldn't believe it.

We obviously need some tips on how to find the water once the trail gets... vague. haha Full, round-trip hike ended up being 3.5 miles long and we never found a trace of the falls. I know it's too dry for the falls most of the year, but we couldn't find anything but a little baby piece of water. With that said, we'll be going back to find the water! It was a great, easy hike. Find this trail off of State Route 159 about 2.6 miles southwest of the exit of the 13-Mile Scenic Drive at Red Rock. I actually thought I was at Oak Creek, which is also off of SR 159, but my friend and I found ourselves here instead. This was a nice surprise because I've never been here before. This is what happens when I try to hike without our hiking guru, Norm K., but we still had a great time. There is a nicely groomed trail and you basically just follow it as far as you want. Of course Norm asked me how the waterfall was and I replied, "What waterfall?" We obviously didn't get that far and/or I didn't know where to go to see one. My friend, who'd never been here, either, and I just walked any which way we wanted until we were done exploring and turned around. Lots of rocks, cacti, views of Red Rock, little streams created from some rain we'd had, and other hikers were seen that morning. That's what's great about these trails: you can just meander (for the most part) and enjoy Mother Nature until you've had your fill for the day and head back until the next time. better than Dawson's Creek it's first creek!, a beautiful short and easy hike located just outside the Redrock national conservation area. This pretty little gem can be discovered on your way to the conservation area or Spring Mountain Ranch State Park/ Bonnie Springs. Parking can be crowded at times but fear not, it's a big desert out there. This trail is kinda lackluster in the dry season, when it really shines with beauty is after a heavy rain. The trail itself is really tame and is great for a quick outdoor hike. Best of all it's FREE!! , that's right get your redrock fix without having to pay a park entrance fee. The hike to the falls is about a mile , but BEWARE the rocks near the falls are very slippery. Don't ruin a good day of hiking with dumb decisions. One bad move and you could slip and fall to your end. Exercise caution when hiking near the rocks or anywhere for example. Always wear appropriate shoes and clothing, lots of water and never hike alone. That being said, tie up those laces and go explore and enjoy! read more

One of the easiest hikes you can access without entering the Red Rock loop. First Creek is right after Oak Creek and before Bonnie Springs to the right, it's easily accessible from the highway. The hike is mainly flat terrain through the desert until you get to the more dense areas of First Creek, but even the descent down into the small waterfall and pond isn't as strenuous. Kids can do this hike no problem, as well as dogs. I would suggest going a little after the Springtime (March-May) and even after monsoon season in Las Vegas (around July-ish) in the summer to see the real effect of the waterfall. The pool gets to a sustainable depth, and there's even fish and crawdads that are in the pool as well. If the trail is too bland, you could also jump off the trail and head into the more rocky, bushy area of it without a problem (you'll run into multiple streams and pools here). Occasionally there are burros to see passing through the area. More than a beginner's hike (it really is a very easy hike), this place is beautiful during sunrise and sunset. One of my favorites to go to when I don't want to go too far away from town or I don't want to get too strenuous. This place can get busy on the weekends, so it's suggested to go on the weekdays in the mornings if you want to avoid the crowds! read more

Nice little hike just outside the Red Rock NCA. In other words, you get the scenery without having to pay the entrance fee. (Not that you should avoid paying the entrance fee--Red Rock NCA is completely worth it and we should all support our national parks). I've been a few times. On the most recent visit toward the end of November 2012, I was surprised to find water still flowing. However, the area had changed quite a bit since my last time and there were more obstacles. Since I was with Jieun and Bawoo (Jieun's Old English Sheepdog), we didn't bother trying to find a way down to the bottom of the waterfall. Instead, we took the easy path to the top of said waterfall. But we did see a guy and his dog down there, so it probably isn't that difficult if you so desire. read more

A couple weekends ago we hiked this trail. It was fun trekking towards the canyon. We were walking imagining there was no concrete world behind us, no cars, and simply imagined we were Cowboys minus the horse and we were walking into the unknown. After awhile that got boring being in the blunt sun pretending we were in search of the new world. Before I could even digest the thought of being bored, we started nearing the trees and a creek! Hallelujuer for the trees because I swear if I hear my eldest son complain about being hot one more time knowing his mommy has his baby brother on her back...I'm going to make him walk back. Sure enough to say, labor day was not his day. Of course I'd never make him walk back, but, I kept shooting positivity towards his funk and as we entered the trees...his energy jolted. He cooled down, ate his snack, and he along with his younger brothers were out exploring nature. So ensure you have proper/adequate food and water. You and/or your 'luggage' will surely want it before realizing you want it. While we did not trek through the canyon to get behind it as originally planned...we did have a good trek and considering we had all the kids, the amount of time we spent hanging around the first creek...it was time to head back. We let the kids lead the way to have them figure out how to get out of where we were in...it's a great place to exercise their senses. We definitely will return to finish this trail up. It really is beautiful and peaceful! As far as we went in I can say is definitely kid friendly. Leave the stroller at home! Stay hydrated! Enjoy! read more
