After surviving our "welcome to camping" experience in Death Valley, we made a very logical decision...go to Vegas. Except not the Strip--Red Rock Canyon. And honestly? It felt like heaven. The temperature was about 10° cooler than Death Valley and we were acting like we had just been rescued from the desert (because...we kind of had been ). Red Rock is gorgeous in that classic desert-meets-mountains way. We kept it pretty chill...easy hikes only since it was still in the 90s and checked out the petroglyph wall, which was super cool to see in person. One of the unexpected things we noticed everywhere were these little cocoons all along the trails and plants. We were fully convinced we were witnessing some kind of butterfly takeover in progress and kept stopping like "okay wait...is this about to turn into something magical soon??" Nature was doing its thing and we were just along for the ride. Most of it is really a scenic drive kind of park with pull-offs and short stops, which honestly was perfect for the heat level we were working with. We didn't tackle any of the longer hikes this time, but it's definitely on the list for a cooler day. Overall: beautiful, easy, a little mysterious (cocoon era??), and a perfect "escape the Strip" activity if you're in Vegas.

"The desert tells a different story every time one ventures into it." -- Robert Edison Fulton Jr. - Waterfalls & big skies on 1/18/26 - A winter wonderland on 2/23/26 - Lush meadows on 3/15/26 Red Rock Canyon's scenic drive requires timed-entry reservations from October through May, but many other hiking trails and scenic areas can be accessed outside of this loop. As a local, here are a few friendly reminders based on things I've witnessed over the years. 1) Tourists visiting the area should respect desert etiquette. Please do a quick Google search prior to visiting if you need more details. 2) Please do not remove large rocks from this NPS site to carry home as souvenirs. 3) Please do not carve your initials in the rocks. 4) Please do not deface petroglyphs. 5) Please do not disturb wild animals.

An amazing natural sight to see only 40 minutes outside of the city. Absolutely stunning views, staff were kind and helpful if you needed it. The driving loop is $20 for a day pass, we drove through it twice. There are plenty of pull off spots for you to stop, get out, take photos. There are a lot of bikers so stay alert. A few trail runners going through the paths too. So many options of ways to enjoy the canyon. I will absolutely be telling everyone about this spot.

Red rock canyon is one of those places that doesn't get old. To access the park, you must make a revelation online during many months (I think it's October - end of May that requires a timed entry reservation. The park is beautiful and each hike offers something for all levels and interests scenery wise. Check All Trails for hikes, length, and details. I recommend buying a national park pass so you can visit here and other national parks as much as you want :)

I've lived in Las Vegas my whole life, and Red Rock Canyon is proof that this city is more than casinos and nightlife. It's our backyard. We rarely see snow like in this photo I took this recent snow storm but when we do we go outside rather than stay in.. The trails are beautiful and well-maintained, and there are options for every skill level. Early mornings out there are unbeatable -- calm, cool, and peaceful. If you want to see the real natural beauty of Southern Nevada, this is the place. I always tell visitors to take a break from the Strip and spend a few hours at Red Rock. The rock formations are stunning, and the desert landscape is something special. It's especially beautiful in the spring when everything is a little greener or right after a snow or rainfall as the cliffs turns into beautiful waterfalls. Pro tip: Go early, reserve your entry, bring plenty of water, and don't skip the scenic drive. If a localyou can join us @ HikingLasvegas for some unique scrambling challenging hike youll have.. so worth the views and sweat ‍

I can't believe how many times I have been to LV and never visited Red Rock Canyon. It is a west of the LV strip about 20 miles or so, but it is worth it. The scenic loop does required a reservation to get in after 8 am, but if you have the national park pass you get in free except for a $2 reservation fee on the reservation website. There are some fee free days throughout the year. We stopped the visitor center to check the map, use the restroom, refill water bottles. The parking lot was pretty full, but there were a few spots left. The park and the scenic drive are neat. There are about 10 or so stops to pull over and check out the stunning vistas. There are some spots with red / orange rock and mountains, reminds me of Bryce and Red reef trail in southern UT. Some of the rising mountains remind me of Zion. The scenic loop drive, can be done in 30-45 minutes with minimal stops. Depends on how much traffic there is and if they are driving the speed limit or not. Definitely worth the visit. Check out the photos.

If you live in the area, definitely get a National Park pass so you can visit this beauty often! Just 30 min from SW Vegas, it is perfect for a nice scenic hike. We usually do part of the Calico basin hike, from calico 1 parking lot to calico 2 parking lot, which is a moderate trail, about 1.7mi in a loop, 350ft ascent. This area is where you can see the "red" rock best. Dogs are welcome. My dog loves coming here. There are bins and signs around to make sure you are not lost. There are also easier trails from the visiter center. I recommend coming before 10am because there are already a lot of adventurers here. You can try to find some turtles from the fenced area attached to the visitor center but they hide! There are also harder trails within Red Rock. Definitely bring lots of water and wear lots of sun protection! Reception is also non-existent here so you can enjoy the beauty of Red Rock Canyon.

It's nice to have this place so close to our home. I've hiked here many times and I continue to explore new parts of Red Rock Canyon. A lot has changed in terms of accessibility, parking, and how much busier it's become. Plan ahead and keep in mind that weekends are always much busier. The sign recently got moved as well and now has a dedicated parking lot making it a safer stop. I hope the land is protected from allowing new construction to get even closer.

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area is located outside of Las Vegas. It has a 13-mile loop, so you can drive through the scenery (there are stop-off points), or you can get out and hike the trails. Reservations are required October 1 - May 31. This is the Mojave Desert, so it can be very hot and dry. Although we did not get way down into the trails, you can see bighorn sheep, antelope squirrels, desert tarantulas as well as Mojave yucca. The rocks were formed over 500 million years ago and the red rock (iron oxide stained) were present during the Jurassic era. Step outside, away from the neon lights and the Strip, for an outdoor environment to refresh the soul.

Beautiful hiking trails! You do have to make a reservation ahead of time so make sure to go online and check out the website before driving to the park. You now have to also get a map of the trails at the welcome center the ticketing agents don't carry them anymore. Otherwise, the trails are wonderful as always with amazing

There is something for everyone here. If you want to stay in your car, there's plenty of scenic views to be had from the loop road. If you are more adventurous, there are plenty of hikes. If you want to rock climb, there's that too. There were plenty of people biking and jogging on the road. As this place is very popular, there is ticketed entry to prevent congestion. Go online to reserve a spot for a nominal fee, and you should be good. I saw a lot of wildlife, including a roadrunner successfully hunting a small rodent.

Amazing! I was blown away with the beauty. We were worried about the parking, but we were fortunate to find parking for our party for the Calico hike. Purchase the reservations ahead of time and it made the entrance smooth. We only had time for the Calico Tank trail and even though we didn't finish, it was great for kids (6-10 year olds). They had a blast climbing everywhere and even though some parts were sketchy, we all made it out scratch free. The 13 mile scenic drive was amazing and I can do that loop over and over.

Red Rock sits fifteen minutes from Vegas and feels like the city finally coughed you out for some fresh air. One turn off Charleston and the noise disappears like someone shut a door behind you. Out here the sandstone tilts, folds, and mutters, and every trail feels like you're walking through the desert's old journal. This time of year, November through April, the place hits its stride with cool air and sharp light that make the whole canyon feel freshly rinsed. Calico Tanks is the classic troublemaker. Scramble through red stone corridors and you end up staring at the Strip from a distance that makes it look unreal. Turtlehead Peak is the opposite kind of fun. Halfway up you start bargaining with your own legs and wondering why you thought this was a good idea. Pine Creek hits you with surprise pockets of green that feel smug about existing where they shouldn't. Even the simple loops land harder than expected, like the place knows it doesn't need to try. The mix of people is its own show. Climbers dusted with chalk, locals clocking their weekend miles, tourists realizing their sneakers were a mistake. No one's pretending. Everyone's here for the same hit. Know this before you roll in. You need a reservation for the Scenic Loop during peak hours in peak season. Winter brings the best weather, which also means the most people. And get the America the Beautiful annual pass unless you like paying to breathe desert air. It skips the entry fee and pays itself off fast. Red Rock isn't one trail. It's a whole mood board carved into stone. Pick a line on the map and you'll come back with a different story, usually a little sweatier and a little better for it.

Is anyone having trouble reserving time slots on their website?

I was able to make reservations. It's free on veterans day.

Do I need to purchase the scenic drive timed entry ticket ahead of time from online or I can get it from the entrance of the park? Thank you so much!

When I went in November they were requiring that you purchase timed entry online. Check the website as this might have changed.

I broke my foot and was wondering if there are any hikes you could take a motorized scooter on? Relatively flat, doesn't have to be paved but I won't be able to navigate much more than pebbles on the ground.

You would only be able to stay within each of the parking lot areas and see the view from there. All of the trails are rugged terrain.

    Is this good for stargazing?

I think they close the loop in the evening. It says 4:30 on the website but I thought it was later in the summer. Besides, with city lights getting closer, it may not be as dark. The desert is an amazing place for stargazing. The great thing is take… Read more

Are there any bike trails/is bike riding allowed on the scenic route?

There were a few bike riders on the 13 mile scenic loop....it is a one way road so you don't have to worry about opposite traffic.

How long does the loop take to drive?

Around an hour. Speed limit is at around 15 miles an hour, plus any stops for sightseeing. 13 miles long.

The trail is easy to follow so you can't really get lost. We only saw one other person when we were on our way to the turn-around point: solitude! What I noticed about this particular hike is how quiet it is there, which makes for a very peaceful trek. We made it down into the wash area and then turned around to go back the same way we came. It was a perfect day to hike it because it was overcast for most of the time and I think the temperature was about mid 70's which is extremely rare for June in Vegas. I'd say that the loop itself was easy but maybe that's for someone who walks, jogs and scrambles often. Maybe if you are a total newbie to any hiking or physical activity then maybe it won't be easy. The hike itself going uphill was easy but going down past all the grey rock heading towards the boulders can be tricky because scrambling is required. So get ready to slide down on your butt, cling onto some boulders and wedge yourself between a few hard places while scraping your skin or knees on hard surfaces and brush. I was wearing shorts and did fine and most importantly do carry some sugary snacks if you need a quick pick me up. Pack some gummies and at least a tiny bottle of water and also emergency sunscreen because even in overcast you will get burned by the desert sun. Overall this is a loop I highly recommend to anyone whose never tried it before. It's easy to follow, can't really get lost and there's always people on the trail so if you need help, almost sure you're not going to be alone. Loved this mini adventure and so glad I gave it a whirl. It was beautiful and peaceful.

(2) There were quite a few restrooms with vault toilets. Each building had two separate rooms with toilets -- BUT the campground locked one side on two of the restrooms that we tried so only one toilet was functional. This created a queue in the morning. We went one way, and a helpful hiker told us to go backwards a bit to go down that path to find whatever trickle of the creek was. Rock climbers were there too. There were many times we couldn't find the next path. Bushes can get pretty narrow. Dress appropriately. Local elder hikers mentioned this was their favorite hike as locals. They were prepared with a backpack, two walking sticks for each hand, hiking boots, etc. Good luck!! We'll have to try this trail again to find this loop vs random one ways everywhere. We're new to Red Rocks Canyon and only experienced Calico Tank/Sandstone Quarry which is amazing.

Overall, this is a really peaceful hike especially if you start early in the morning before more people show up which is around 9am.

Las Vegas Overlook Loop…read more Review: In the last 12 months, we completed this hike 2.5 times. Our first time was February 2019 just days after Las Vegas was hit with snow. The challenge then was the cold weather and slippery/icy terrain. We attempted this hike last summer before 7 AM and turned around after 2 miles due to the heat. We just hiked this trail a few days ago and the weather was perfect. This hike is no cupcake, but at the same time, I didn't think it was too difficult. Just keep in mind that the total distance is a little over 6 miles, it will take over 2 hours to complete, the climb is between 1,500-2,000 feet, and 90% of the trail is exposed. If you ever climbed Exploration Peak or Lone Mountain and thought either one was hard, then this hike is NOT for you. I compare this hike to Turtlehead Peak or Gass Peak. The view is awesome!! Stats: According to AllTrails, the total distance is 6.3 miles round-trip, 1,534 ft elevation gain, and rated as "hard". My stats are about the same. The only difference is that my Garmin has the elevation gain a little over 2,000 ft. Location & Tips: I'm unsure where exactly the trailhead starts, but you can park off NV-159 and Fossil Ridge Road or GPS to Cowboy Trail Rides (4053 Fossil Ridge Road, Las Vegas, NV 89161). Due to the Coronvirus and all of the shutdowns, the main parking is currently closed, but you can still park on the side of the road or in front of the parking lot. There is typically an enough space to safely park if you get here early. -Start from the Horseback Riding signage and head down the trail. The stables will be on your left side and as the trail begins to merge right. Take the first trail past the stables on the left. The trail is clearly defined (even in snow) and easy to follow. -Around .75 Miles: You will see two trails; one is leading left and the other is straight. Head straight and from there, you'll reach a few switchbacks. After 4 sets of switchbacks, you'll reach a split. The trail to the left heads to Muffin Ridge and the trail to the right heads towards the overlook. Follow the trail to the overlook. From there, it's another 2 miles to the highest point and the overlook. -The overlook is around the 3-mile mark. Enjoy the view, snap some pics, but be careful. Keep in mind that you're still on top of a mountain. Gravity always wins. -Heading Back: You can either backtrack back to the trailhead or continue on the trail to complete a full loop. Continue the trail and you'll reach the flattest part of the hike. You know you're there when you see the solar panels. Continue to follow the trail to another trail dubbed Bone Shaker Extreme. Follow that trail down and watch your footing. Parts of the trail is rocky, slippery, and potentially, bone shaking dangerous. Follow that trail and eventually, you'll reach the area that leads you back to the trailhead.

Park at the Cowboy Trails horseback rides parking lot off of SR 159 and head towards the horses. Just follow that road until you see a trail to your left and follow it; using the AllTrails app is recommended as there are various little trails there. It's about 2.7 miles to the overlook with gradual elevation gain along the way. You'll know you've arrived when you are greeted by a fantastic view of the Strip and Vegas Valley in front of you. From here, you can turn around and go back the way you came or continue on the trail heading west where you'll eventually face Red Rock. The trail will loop north until you start heading down back down towards the horses. Careful on the descent as there is loose gravel and rocks to navigate. If you do a true loop and not the out and back, it's very easy to get almost 6.5 miles total when you start tracking your mileage from the parking lot. This hike will take the better part of 3-3.5 hours depending on your pace and how much time you want to spend at the overlook enjoying the view. Bring plenty of hydration and snacks to enjoy, but be sure to pick up after yourselves. Happy hiking! #LeaveNoTrace
