Worst dentist! Avoid at all costs! This Dr. G. wanted to pull my tooth out for no reason! He told me my tooth was broken and to "get it through my head" that the tooth could not be saved. So I left, and I went to a new dentist the next day and they saved my tooth with no problem and said the tooth was not broken at all! Besides this, as if anything could be worse, my first appointment they told me to come in one half hour early. So I did and then they just had me sit there for an hour and a half before they finally took me in for my appointment! The place always smells bad, and is dirty. Bad experience all around. You feel like you're in some shack in Calcutta! So depressing... But the owner/dentist is the worst! He clearly doesn't care about his patients when he just wants to pull teeth that can easily be saved! Thank God I ran for my life! So happy now with my new dentist! read more

Somerville first dental is a dishonest place, or I should say the front desk manager is unable to do her job properly. She will lie to you by telling you that you make an appointment that she decided to make for you. A simple cleaning will take you 4 to 5 appointments for no reason at all. I'm not sure why is the appointment is always unfinished and that you have to come back for the same service the next day. Front desk manager is so rude and unprofessional. She will call and talk over you then will not give you a chance to talk. Soon you asked her to speak to her manager she will hang off the phone. What kind of service are you guys providing with this negative attitude. I have 5 clients and family members going to this place and I am taking my time today to make sure they go elsewhere. This may be a bit of a long review. I had to leave the dental practice I loved and had always had a wonderful experience at due to a change in insurance. I tried here when I started to feel some pain when eating sweet things on a tooth that I knew my previous dentist had been monitoring a cavity on, telling me that she would let me know when it was clinically appropriate to fill. I was also overdue for a cleaning. Could get into this place relatively quickly and use my dental insurance. They call you to confirm your appointment like once a day at least. I responded to a text to confirm and continued to get phone calls. This is pretty intense. The cleaning was fine, but I was put off a bit by the doctor telling me I needed tooth extractions (I still have wisdom teeth) without having asked me any questions about my teeth. When I told him I had no pain and my previous dentist of many years had not suggested I needed the teeth removed he said that was fine. This just makes my radar go up that they are interested in doing procedures that do not actually need to be done. I was told I had two cavities on each side of my mouth. I scheduled an appointment to have just the side done that was causing me occasional pain. When making that appointment I was pressured into scheduling an appointment to have all the cavities done, which I resisted, only scheduled to have two. On the day of that appointment, the dentist filled a third cavity without my consent. After he was done he told me that he had seen another one and filled it. I was right there in the chair and he did not ask me if I would like that filled. Which I feel is unethical. I then paid the estimated cost and was pressured into making an appointment to have the cavities on the other side of my mouth filled. I said I preferred to do this later and the woman at the front desk was so insistent on making this appointment that it was easier to make it than to continue to tell her no (which I did several times). I later canceled that appointment as I had decided I was never coming back to this practice. My dental insurance changed again and I was able to go back to my previous dentist. And she told me she was surprised I had any fillings, telling me that filling the cavities at that time was not clinically indicated due to them being very shallow. I was having some pain with sweetness so one was actually bothering me but the other two (the one I agreed to and the one that was filled without my consent) were not deep enough to require a filling at that time. I am so grateful I am back with a dentist that I trust and that is not interested in upselling any services that are not needed. I also received a bill a year after my appointment and when I called to ask for some type of statement that broke down why I owed what I owed, I was told to get an explanation of benefits from my insurer and that would explain it all. The bill they sent me makes no sense, does not list their charges for services, or what I previously paid. Only lists what my insurer paid them and what I now owe them. I can understand if there are limitations to their software or something, but there should be some indication of previous payments and a breakdown of how they got the amount they are requesting I pay. read more

There is never the same doctor twice,the last time I had a doctor put in a crown and root canal,he left me in pain and it is infected,because he used a brace or some thing I now have to see a specialist out of pocket. They repeatedly fo unnecessary work on low income patients insurance. The service is disorganized and they repeatedly reschedule you without your knowledge and will charge you if you cancel. I found this place as I was overdue (by a few years) for a cleaning. As one who gets squeamish and nervous about going to the Dentist, this was honestly the best experience I've ever had. Rita, who answered the phone, was so kind & welcoming. She was incredibly understanding of my hopes for a cleaning amidst a busy summer schedule for the office, and my odd availability. It was lucky that there was a cancellation, and a spot had opened up for the following day. The hygienist Breena (apologies if I am misspelling her name!!) was an absolute dream. She asked great questions and patiently listened to concerns. She made it easy to communicate, and feel comfortable throughout the entire cleaning. She asked about my routine, and gave great feedback & tips on what she was seeing while cleaning. When I asked about certain products (toothpaste companies, manual vs electric toothbrush, etc) she shared her experience & preferences without any judgement. She also offered suggestions on how to achieve some goals - how to best avoid too much staining as someone who LOVES a daily coffee, or two.. I haven't had any major surgeries here, so I personally cannot speak on that. But the regular check-up was truly the most comfortable and reassuring experience I've ever had in a Dentist's office. Their staff is excellent - front desk staff is warm, friendly, helpful and welcoming. Dental staff are wonderful and kind, and so very patient, even when I ask a million questions. They let me listen to music on my headphones and reassure me that they're totally fine with having a grown adult reduced to tears. Great place! I am So not a fan of going to the dentist. I have to admit though if there was one thing I would go back in my early 20's and change, it would be making sure I regularly got to the dentist 2x a year and not just waiting until something hurts. Anyway truth be told I needed a good amount of work done and the staff at First Dental are all very friendly, well educated, and pass no judgement on others. No they aren't looking just to take your . In fact they have encouraged I Look into dental schools for the more expensive work that I need. They really have my best Interest. I've been a long time customer of Somerville First Dental. My son had several cavities that they filled over the last few years. Every. Single. Cavity. was either not filled correctly or some issue has come up with it. He's now had 3 teeth pulled, 2 root canals, 3 crowns, 2 spacers and today's joy is an abscess due to the dental work of "fillings" they performed here.. I would highly caution anyone thinking of coming here. You'll likely end up somewhere else with a larger bill and more anguish than the first time, they referred me to Children's Dental in Stoneham, I'd highly recommend them. The more time that elapse's the more issues we find with the old dental work. Irritated that I let my son go through all this nonsense for so long when I could have taken him somewhere else that would have done the job right the first time. read more

Due to some unfortunate circumstances, I've had to go to the dentist quite a lot in the past two years. I chose First Dental since it was close to my house and I'm so glad I did. I've worked with multiple dentists in the office and have been impressed by their professionalism and kind demeanor. The facility is clean and welcoming and I've always had a good experience, despite having intense dental anxiety (Valium helps!). The hygienists (Leyla and Berina) are both fantastic, knowledgeable and kind. Berina has given me many unbiased recommendations and advice, with no judgement! Rita, the receptionist, has always been very helpful and accommodating of scheduling appointments for me and has gone out of her way to try to get confirmation from my insurance company for special services. The staff is wonderful. The environment is clean and quiet. I have had two front chipped (badly) teeth for six months because I didn't want to go to the dentist! I was feeling really self conscious about them when I finally decided to go to First Dental after he had been raving about it for awhile. To my amazement the dentist actually cared! He put beautiful filling on both teeth temporarily. Veneers are next. Amazingly, They did not charge me for this. The dentist was thorough, calm and very nice. The front desk is very nice. However, the rest of my experience at Somerville First Dental was horrible. I went there because it was close to my house, covered by my insurance, and had no reviews online-- so I figured it would be a reliable place. I went there because I had teeth sensitivity. The hygienist took full x-rays (which were very painful and she had to try multiple times to get the piece in my mouth properly). Also, they never asked me when my last x-rays were taken, and they just took full x-rays. After a female dentist came in, and was about to begin a cleaning until I told her that I was there for a consultation for my sensitive teeth. This showed that there was poor communication from staff to dentist. The dentist concluded that I had cavities and needed my wisdom teeth to come out. When we went to the front desk, she said I should have the wisdom teeth come out first since the pain was in the back of my mouth, even though I had told her moments ago it was in the front. I was the first patient, and there were multiple times she had forgotten things I had just told her. I went to another dentist for a second consultation, and came to find that the hygienist forgot to take two x-rays and that the set were very poor x-rays. What baffles me more is that the dentist did not even realize that there were two missing x-rays. I ended up paying for the xtra two to be taken, and Somerville dental would not reimburse for the x-rays that they did not take. They only offered to take them again. But at this point I had paid and taken the missing two. I told the front desk that I wanted the dentist to call me-- but of course they never did. I would NEVER go back to this place-- where obviously it's dentist and staff have little compassion for its clients, have poor communication, and seem to just be there to make as much money as they can from their client's despite their actual needs. read more

Yes, the front desk folks were nice, AND I also found them to be knowledgable and in good communication with the dentist, the dental assistant, and others in the facility. I ask a lot of questions, and everyone was very willing to listen to my concerns and make sure that my questions were answered in a clear and understandable way. Do not bring your kids there!! Brought my children there for a check up and since they have parking and are close to my place, I though I'll give them a try, worst experience ever. Where do I start? They took x-rays on my 2 children without the apron, I asked why and they said it wasn't needed, hello? should have taken that as the first sign, then the dentist, who was nice performed the exam and cleaning, however to my surprise the dentist says my children needed more than 8 fillings and silver crowns and I was very surprised because the last dentist told me they were fine six months ago, go figure!! But the worst is not over, the manager then explained to me my insurance will only cover a percentage so the rest was out of pocket and demanded up front payment. I told him I could not believe my kids teeth were is such a bad shape, but he rudely says that what you get for going to crappy dentists, I beg you a pardon?? At this point I was very upset for such unprofessional attitude and left. I made an appointment with another dentist around the area and I was shocked when he said my kids only had 2 cavities each but they were so tiny he would not bother to fill it only watch it, can you imagine? My dentist did the most he could do for the least price he could do it, and he explained the situation and his motivation to save a rotting tooth without taking advantage of my wallet. He also gave me the freedom to make my own choice about the next steps in regards to tooth care, admitting that the expensive procedure he had originally suggested was not an immediate necessity. When I went to First Dental, the receptionist was prompt in giving me the paperwork I needed to fill out before the doctor could see me. She answered all of my questions, and when she didn't know, she asked the Manager behind her, and he had my answer. The assistant was very straight forward in letting me know what was happening with my X-RAYs, and was conscientious about making sure I was as comfortable as possible. When Dr Tran came in, he told me EXACTLY what he was doing before he did it, and showed me the X-RAY so I saw where he was going to be working. When he did my inspection, dictating to the assistant numbers and words I hadn't heard before, I asked what they all meant. He was quick to explain the words and meanings to me, so I had an even better idea of what is going on in my own mouth, rather than other places i had been who couldn't tell me in simple terms. When he had finished, he went over everything he had seen, and what had to be done. Not once did he say "This needs to be done asap". he told me how far out my different treatments should wait, and left the planning to me. To me, "work to be done" means an empty wallet. However, when I finished my appointment, the receptionist reviewed the DR's findings, and even went over my insurance info with me, so I knew the exact amount I have to bring in for my following appointments(allowing me to know how much to set aside). All-in-all, it was the most pleasant experience I have ever had in a dental office. They were upfront with all of the information, the process, and the treatment. The DR was careful not to cause pain, and they all seem to take pride in their work. They cared for me, not my wallet. read more

I went to this office for about a year. Every experience was terrible. I chose it because they accepted my insurance and were only 1 block away, and had immediate appointments, and I wasn't feeling particularly picky. After extensive issues with them, I'm done. They call me constantly, even after I told them I don't want to be a patient there anymore. They have needed/wanted to re-take xrays over and over again, even on the spot because they forgot to save them. no.thank.you! The last time I went was to get a filling, and they didn't fill it all the way and I had pain for months! I asked them to re-fill it, and a new dentist walked in to do it, without introducing herself. I had never seen her before, and wondered where the hell she came from. I've had loads of filling and dental work and I have a high pain tolerance, but OMFG she F*** stabbed my gums with novacaine needles and I was screaming in pain telling her to chill the f** out and slow down, and she w.o.u.l.d.n.o.t.l.i.s.t.e.n. DO NOT GO HERE. I finally blocked their number from my phone. Then, today I received a text message from "1 (29 )" that said "please call 6176238489" (which is their number) This means that they're using illegal text spamming tools to send me text messages without my authorization.
