Aaron refused to see me, saying it would ruin his entire day. Maybe that seems reasonable to you -- I was late, and it was his first cut of the day -- but here's why it's not: In the year or so I've been going to him, he's cancelled on me twice. Once, he said he was sick and asked if we could reschedule. When I asked when we might re-sked -- informing him I needed a cut before the weekend for MY WEDDING -- he went days without responding, only offering actual appointments after I followed up several times. No offer to connect me with someone else in the shop, no recognition that this was important. Then, a few months later, he cancelled on me literally as I was on the way to the shop: "Hey bud! I've got you at 8:30 am but I'm out in the suburbs right now for some birthday stuff and won't be back until a bit later. Can I get you in later today or later this week?" When I sent my availability for a reschedule, he again didn't respond until I followed up. Illness is one thing. "Birthday stuff" is just blowing me off. In short, Aaron will cancel on customers at the last minute and ignore important rescheduling requests. But if you show up 8-9 minutes late, he will refuse to see you, then speak to you like an aggrieved party. He will cite a policy on the website that says they "generally" do not accept customers who are ten minutes late, even though you're objectively NOT 10 minutes late. (And let's be real: a customer showing up 5-10 minutes late is part of running a barber shop. Or a dentist's office. Or whatever.) EDIT: He will then charge you full price for your "missed" appointment and send you a quasi-apology that also insults you. I kept going to him because he was convenient, reasonably priced, and seemed like a good guy at heart. But no more. He's actually petulant, unprofessional, unreasonable, condescending, unfair -- just childish, really. I see a few other reviews that state the same.

I have been a client of Manal's for nearly fifteen years and have followed her through three different locations. Lincoln Square, to Skokie, and now to the current location. You may then think I am recommending Manal Studio without being able to make a comparison. Not so. I live in the city on the near north side and work in the Loop. Over the many years, I have made numerous attempts to use other high end salons or traditional men's barber shops. This includes expensive salons in the Loop, Gold Coast, and Lincoln Park, as well as and hipster joints out in Wicker Park. And here I am, with Manal Studio. The basis for my recommendation is Manal's exceptional skill and client handling. Her personal level of excellence then carries over to the full staff and location. Manal has built a great business. For the haircut, I'm a man with a thick hair and at least three cowlicks. My preferred cut has changed over the years: from very short to longer and more full, yet still professional. She always leaves me looking and feeling great and manages my unruly cowlicks well. She's willing to talk through her approach, adjust the cut, and take and implement feed back. I think this last point is what I have appreciated most. The ability to share feedback. I have found that it can be difficult to express with the person cutting my hair a difference of opinion - that I wished something had been done differently. But not with Manal. She's open to hearing how I think the cut is going during that visit, or has grown in since my last visit. She's easy to talk to. And she's friendly. Also, she works with me to talk about what products will work well with my hair, but I never feel like she's over selling me. Lastly, the studio is comfortable environment and the staff is great. I absolutely found that here at Manal Studio. I appreciate that they have an online booking system so you're not confined to business hours to work on your plans for the week. The system also sends out text reminders which are always helpful. Upon arrival (free street parking on side streets, by the way), you're greeted with nothing but good vibes. It smells lovely, everyone in there is kind and happy to see you, and there's soft music playing. Ahhh, an oasis. Muna took care of my color and Manal handled my cut. It was really comforting to have the owner with 25+ years of experience cutting my hair. Picking a new salon is anxiety-inducing! Both ladies are so lovely and did a wonderful job on my hair. Manal did a consultation with me ahead of time to better understand my hair color and cut preferences and worked her magic to help me leave with the desired results. We were in for a treat!! I had one of the best touch up/hair dye and blow out jobs I have ever received. Mary was the stylist who worked on me, she has 50 years experience and it shows! She was able to blend a perfect color dye to blend my roots and the rest of my hair. She also gave me a killer blow out.. I received a better dye job from her than I have in my visits to some other pricier salons down the street. The place is also not too busy since there are 2-4 stylists working and the prices are awesome. Men's haircut $15 and roots/blowout $65.
