What we really appreciate is how communicative she is--she talks us through what she's doing, explains what she thinks will work best, and makes us feel totally comfortable every step of the way. To make matters worse, I ended up deciding to give her another chance thinking maybe that was a one-off...bad day.... I called ahead and made an appointment for 4pm on a Friday. I showed up at 4pm to see a hand written note on the door saying that she will be back at 4:30pm. What on earth?!?? Unprofessional is an understatement for the way this woman conducts business. I will never return here!! Initially I referred 5-6 people to her when she wasn't treating her clients this way. I will inform all of them and hope they, too, stop giving her their business. However, I did feel that the environment was unwelcoming at times, and after my third visit, I felt it was important to be honest about that experience. Part of my review included concerns that were shared with me by my sister, who no longer comes to this salon due to feeling uncomfortable and out of place. She explained to me that on multiple occasions she felt she was treated differently, received looks that made her feel she did not belong, and was consistently serviced last while other customers were taken first. She is not confrontational and chose not to address it herself, but her experience mattered to me, and that is why I mentioned it. Sharing someone's lived experience does not make me a liar. To say that dismissing someone's feelings or perspective as "insane" simply because it does not match your own is deeply concerning. You cannot prove or disprove how someone feels in a space, regardless of who else was present that day. Asking a stylist basic questions about management and tipping was not done maliciously. I was simply trying to understand the environment and leadership of the establishment something customers are allowed to be curious about. Unfortunately, your response has now answered those questions for me. I fully understand that this salon primarily serves children, and that delays can happen. My issue was not the eight-minute wait itself, but the lack of communication. Being left standing to the side without explanation while others are attended to naturally creates confusion and discomfort. A simple acknowledgment would have gone a long way. I acknowledge that I could have explained certain parts of my review more clearly, and I am doing so now. What I will not accept is being labeled dishonest or having my concerns minimized instead of addressed with professionalism. Shelli described a bit what she would consider doing with my hair and gave me her number. It was low-pressure enough that I contacted her the next time I needed a hair cut. I have always been a reluctant style subject. Since my mom subjected me to cuts by beauty school fiends as a kid, I have always been afraid of change, but Shelli and I had a nice discussion about what I could deal with (i.e. not 50 products and flatirons; I can't even dry my hair without bonking myself in the head repeatedly) and what I was looking for. She talked me up to something a little different but that was similar enough that I wouldn't go into shock. She also gave me good tips on how to style/dry it, since I am all thumbs at that (though on the first attempt I did a pretty good job at recreating her results, so that's saying something for her technique!) Maybe next we will move up to color, a new step for me! The salon itself is small with an explosion of graffiti-looking murals on the walls. Not what you might expect in Downers Grove, but it's cool that they are adding a splash of urban flair to this 'burb.

However, getting into the city for a cut & color with 2 small kids in tow was becoming impossible. I was overwhelmed by all the salon options in Naperville though. I happened to be driving through the strip mall where the Salon Avenue suites are located and went in out of curiousity. I have never seen a set up like Salon Avenue before - each suite is an independently run business with it's own hours, stylist, etc. I stopped to pick up a brochure from the Curls & Swirls suite and Gina greeted me very warmly. I explained that I was new to the area and looking for a new stylist. After chatting for a few minutes I made my first appointment with her partner Melissa. I have seen Melissa now for 6 months. She has cut my hair (a completely new style for me) about 10 times and colored it twice and every time I have been absolutely thrilled with the results. The prices are VERY reasonable (especially compared to Chicago) and the service is top notch. There is nothing pretentious about this place, it is relaxed and comfortable. The hours are fantastic too which is great for a Mom like me (where else can you get a haircut & color on a Sunday afternoon??) I am really, really happy that I found this salon.
