As first-time parents, my wife and I were nervous to leave our son with anyone that wasn't us. Mangala (the kids call her "Auntie") is warm, patient, and dedicated to supporting each and every child in her care. Leaving our son with Mangala and her staff was the closest thing we could find to dropping him off at grandma's house, which is exactly the homey, safe environment we were looking for. Our son started a few weeks before his first birthday. He learned so much in the 1.5 years we spent there and transitioned from 2 naps to 1. Not only that, but he LOVED being there. Most days it took me over 10 minutes to get him to leave because he was always having so much fun. It was very clear to us that our son loved being there and that Mangala loved him like family. We KNEW he was safe and loved and well cared for and challenged every day. Our family recently left Los Angeles, which is the only reason why we stopped sending our son to First Steps, and leaving this daycare was one of the most difficult things about moving. In fact, my son still asks us almost every day when he can go back to Auntie's house and when he can see Auntie, her helpers, and all of the friends he made. Best daycare ever! A home away from home. I enrolled my son 5 years ago, and have since enrolled 3 more of my children, all under Mangala's loving care. She home cooks their food, sings songs and plays games, has a lovely large backyard with lots to do and explore, and my kids were always so happy in her care. I took 2 kids to this daycare which they loved so much and the owner Mangala always received them with a warm welcoming greeting and the kids loved it there. They learned the alphabet, numbers, shapes, colors, lots of songs, sharing and most importantly good manners. Her assistants are also very sweet ladies. We were referred to Mangala (who goes by Auntie with the kids) by good friends and couldn't be happier. Mangala is absolutely wonderful!! We were originally a little hesitate to put our little ones in daycare anywhere as there is so much trust involved, especially when they are so young. Also, one of our daughters is very high energy and strong willed. Not everyone is equipped to deal with her intense personality, but Auntie is so loving, patient and smart...she really knows how to deal with each individual child's needs and quirks in such a compassionate manner. I also know my girls love her, because even with their limited vocabulary "Go see Auntie" is quite clear and they always run inside with huge smiles on their faces to greet her every morning. Very unprofessional. We were with her and her assistants for a year and after a few months I knew I had to find my son a better place, but the daycares I wanted him to attend had waiting lists. She doesn't give any notice when she won't be available sometime. Not even a 24 hour notice. My son would come home with the same bruises on his legs for weeks and when I asked about it she said she'd rather not deal with parents like me. It was normal for her to get defensive when I asked about his day or what he ate while attending. I resented dropping him off there so I only did so when absolutely necessary until I could find a better daycare. Over the holidays she had multiple cars parked on her lawn, but I left my child there anyways. I came back a few hours later to check the scene. There were still cars on her lawn. I knocked on the door and she tried to scold me for not calling first. As I was about to leave she let him out the front door to chase me because she was upset with me. I told my son to go back and she let him out again. That was the last day my son attended. Too many red flags. I couldn't, and wouldn't, recommend her to anyone. Mangala and her staff have been an absolute blessing to our family. The team has so much heart, a loving rapport with children, and a caring mindset. My daughter gets so excited and begins kicking her legs every morning as we turn onto her "school's" street. Most days she even cries when it is time to leave! Auntie and her staff make an effort to consistently engage and provide foundational instruction to the kids. She is patient and ensures they are met at their individual developmental level. They are dedicated to providing a safe, fun, and loving environment dedicated to growth, and we are tremendously thankful. This is more than a daycare. My son has been going to First Steps Family Day Care (FSFDC) since he was 6 months old. My son was 2 years old when we left FSFDC due to relocating back to our hometown. Being a first time mother, and a returning working mom, I was quite apprehensive to leave my son under the care of non-family members. However, the moment I met Mangala Jayakody (owner and primary care-taker at FSFDC), I immediately felt at ease that we found the right person for my son. Mangala has a lovely demeanor and is someone I would consider as an extended family member here in LA. These were important attributes for me, as I wanted to make sure that my son was loved and cared for in the daycare environment, especially living in LA, which is our home-away-from-home, away from our family. A true testament to the amount of love and attention that my son got from Mangala and Gnanna (her right-hand lady) was the amount of cuddles that my son would give them both at the start and the end of the day. If hugs and kisses were the currency of children, then Mangala and Gnanna are truly rich women. They are adored by all the kids at FSFDC. I sincerely thank Mangala and Gnanna for showing my son the love and affection through all the years. He is the cuddly and well behaved little boy that he is today because of these lovely ladies. Since leaving FSFDC, we have really missed the mornings that my son and I would knock on their door and be greeted with Mangala's big smile and cheery "Good morning, Mr Julian!" I was incredibly anxious sending my daughter to daycare for the first time, but she (and her dad and I) had the best experience I could have hoped for with Mangala at First Steps. It's so clear that Mangala loves these kids so much! When we first met with her she showed me the wall of pictures and cards from kids who had been there years ago and were now graduating high school, and I knew from that it was a special place. Mangala would send me videos of the songs they were learning and always put my mind at ease when I was worried in those first couple of weeks. My daughter, who was there for a year starting just before she turned 2, learned the alphabet, counting, days of the week, countless songs, the Pledge of Allegiance, and so much more. And she got to spend so much time just playing with other kids, which is the most important thing at that age. Mangala was always very good at communicating with me or my husband about any issues our daughter was having, as well as things that came up (as they do in a home-based daycare) like her going out of town, having to be away for a couple of hours, etc. These things rarely came up (like twice in a year I think), but when they did Mangala was VERY careful to do everything by the book. She made sure to let us know if she was bringing an assistant (fingerprinted, background checked) in to cover when she was away. And the assistants she brought in were always people who she had known for a long time. My daughter loved all of them. Mangala was also very helpful to us when we embarked on potty training. By the time we left - just before my daughter turned 3 - she was pretty much fully potty trained aside from when she slept. This was a huge help for us, as you can imagine! My daughter made a nearly effortless transition to preschool, thanks to Mangala and all the terrific kids there. I'm so happy we made the decision to send her to First Steps and I continue to recommend it to my friends in the area. Most important of all is just the love and care she took with all of the kids. As a first time parent, I had no idea how truly daunting finding childcare is. I asked friends and neighbors what they did and three families from three completely different sectors of my life told me about Mangala. One was a family that now had teenage daughters and the others were just about to age out and start kindergarten. At the moment, my son was too young to start there so I looked at other places, but something my mother said kept me coming back to Mangala's. "If I lived close to you , I'd be watching my grandchild, but Mangala is the next best thing to leaving him with family." She was absolutely right. The children really get individualized, tailored attention. Her approach to teaching, behavior correction, affection etc is all based on how she observes each child's growing personality. She and her assistant really get to know each child's sensitivities, changing needs and interests. Knowing children that had "graduated" from her facility, some with special needs, special dietary considerations, medical issues etc, I knew that she really understood how provide for children at varying levels and keep parents informed and included. My daughters are now 15 and 12 years old and Mangala took care of them when they were little. I was convinced I wouldn't find a good day care after I had searched for a long time. But once Mangala opened her door to me I knew this was the right place for my baby. At the time she didn't really want to take on a new infant but after looking at my child she agreed anyway. I was so happy and have never regretted it. My kids loved it and were well taken care of with everything they needed. I am giving 5 stars wishing I could give 10! My daughter has been with First steps since she was 6 months old (she is now almost 3) and we absolutely LOVE it!!!! Finding childcare is such a daunting task, and I will be the first to admit that being a teacher, I am overly (annoyingly) knit-picky about finding the right place. It was important to me that my child was eating healthy and organic foods, learning social skills, kindness, and academically learning as well, all in a clean and safe environment. Well First steps has it all, and more! My daughter will be three in a month, and she is potty-trained (yes you read right), using full sentences, and independent and full of personality, yet polite and kind. She knows her colors, can count to 20, can sing the National anthem, and can speak phrases in multiple languages (French, Spanish, Sri Lankan, Tagalog, German)! It really is unbelievable. Miss Mangala is trained in the Montessori teaching method, and it shows with the kids. My daughter even understands and practices recycling! It's adorable!!! We love her so much that we canceled our plans to put her into a Montessori preschool because I'm confident that this is the best place for her! I have no doubt she'll be more than ready for Kinder coming from First Steps. What I see and love is that Mangala - and her amazing assistant GNana -love and adore each kid individually. When I come to pick my kid up and see others leaving with their parents, I see the attention she gives each child. And it's not an act. When my daughter arrives, she runs to Mangala and gives her a big hug- same when we leave. Just today when we were walking from the front door, my daughter said, "Bye Mangala! I love you! See you tomorrow!" Then followed it up with, "I had such a great day!" I am actually quite upset to read the bad review. And I don't usually do this, but I feel compelled to speak on it because they are so amazing and I would hate for a mommy to read a disgruntled review and miss the amazing experience there for their child. Miss Mangala has ALWAYS notified me of the daycare closing -which is very seldom, btw- WELL in advance, and multiple times before it actually closes. If there is ANYONE out of the ordinary there, she notifies and asks me first. The only time it was anyone other than a worker, it was her son. She made sure I met him and was comfortable, even though he was only there for a brief time, in a room far from the kids AND he was fingerprinted anyway! Regarding any kind of bruises, It's hard for me to believe if there were any that she a) caused them or b) didn't notice them. If my daughter has even the tiniest bruise or scratch, they notice and they ask me. If she has even a little fall or trip, they tell me. As a teacher and mother, I appreciate this very much. (Even though sometimes it's a teeny scratch or paper cut. She notices them all! Lol! And personally, if I was unhappy with my daycare in any way, I surely would not keep my child there for more than a year. Oh, and First Steps has a waitlist too. Every family that I have ever referred has been ecstatic with the care- and some are still waiting to get in. Again, I don't mean this as a review to speak ill of anyone. In fact it is to do the opposite. Miss Mangala is such a loving and kind human being that opens her school to so many different amazing families. Our daughter was 15-months-old when she started at First Steps Family Day Care, which for her was the perfect age to take her 'first steps' into a nurturing little community outside of the family home. We had seen several other Day Cares in the valley, but it wasn't until we met Mangala and toured First Steps that we knew we had found the right place. As a parent you get a gut instinct and ours told us that this was a warm, joyful and safe place. Additionally, Mangala suggested we speak to some other parents whose kids go to the Day Care -- she provided us with some phone numbers. Speaking to other parents about their faith in Mangala and how happy their child was attending First Steps was extremely comforting. From day 1, our daughter was embraced wholeheartedly by Mangala and the other child care helpers, and both her ease and excitement in arriving there in the mornings (along with her reluctance to leave in the afternoons!) was a testament to the welcoming and fun atmosphere they create. She comes home singing the many songs they sing daily there, chats about the friends she's made, and at just 2, can count to 10 and say most of her ABC. Her vocabulary also accelerated the minute she started going! I recently had my second baby, and am grateful to Mangala for the flexibility she showed our family during my pregnancy and the first few months of my new baby's life. This is truly a FAMILY day care -- it's personal rather than corporate. We now have a baby boy, and when he is old enough we would also love him to go to here as well. I'm a full time working mom and placing my son in daycare was one of the most emotional events to date. With that said, I wanted a place that my son would be happy and well looked after. He was. But what I didn't like about this place was the dishonesty, the unprofessionalism and laziness. Again, this is my experience and I wish I had pulled my child sooner. Dishonest- Mangala has a cat. It lives outside and it comes in her house off and on. Cats are fine, as long as this info is disclosed to the parents. It was not. In my opinion, that's dishonest. Her claim is its her sons (who lives next door). I don't care. Let me decide as the parent if that's what I want for my child. Unprofessional- a good daycare will keep the parents informed of any schedule changes for holidays, etc. Mangala does not. She has a huge Mac computer sitting in her kitchen and doesn't use it. This si a digital age! C'mon sned an email! There was no newsletter stating what the kids are eating, learning, etc. She is often "out" and uses substitutes that you've never met. Not professional to me at all. Lazy-This is concerning toddler development. Potty training is a challenge at home, you will get no assistance from Mangala or her "helpers" while your child is in her care. None whatsoever . PT'g can be frustrating, I totally get it. But its necessary and she set us back by not even trying. In regards to teaching, Mangala showed us videos of her giving one-on-one time to toddlers for their letters, shapes, colors, etc. This is a big deal for me. Ask me if she ever had a one-on-one with my 3 year old? His pediatrician noticed his speech was behind and that was my official deal breaker. I should have pulled him sooner, much sooner. So my warning to parents is this. Mangala is a nice lady. Your child will more than likely love her. But as a parent, I want more for my little one and she did not deliver. If you're looking for a babysitter...she's the one. If you're looking for someone that does more than just "watch" your child, you should pass. read more

She cares deeply for the children that she takes care of and really has their well being in mind. So much so that we were worried a little about having to tell her she would be starting pre k this past fall and she wouldn't be going to First Steps anymore. The transition was seamless and it was due to Mangala spending time with her and teaching her all of the basics you learn in pre k. My daughter attended this daycare when she was ~7 months old. My husband and I researched nearly 50 day cares before we visited First Step - and we fell in love with it the moment we stepped in. The owner, Mangala Jayakody, is a delightful lady - she runs a clean, disciplined, loving and enriching center, where all the kids are happy and so smart! Mangala is quite obviously proud of her kids, and goes above and beyond to take outstanding care of them and teach them. Our daughter absolutely loved the day care, Ms. Mangala, her helper and all the other kids.She eagerly looked forward to going every day, and dove straight into Mangala's arms when we dropped her off. She was always well taken care of and did really well. Since this was such a great fit, we worked hard to make arrangements to get day care to work - we even hired a morning and evening nanny to help with drops offs and pick-ups. Ultimately, we had to take our daughter out for personal reasons but we still visit and our daughter still is delighted when she seems Ms. Mangala and the other kids! We hope to bring her back to this fantastic day care in a few months. We cannot recommend Mangala and First Step daycare enough! read more

Not your average daycare...an awesome one! Mangala and her helpers are great. Just like family, my boys still call her and her helpers auntie. It's been several years since they've gone there but we still stop in once in a while. Why? because my boys always ask to see their Auntie Mangala and when we do it's like my boys were there yesterday. When my boys were going there, Mangala and her helpers would always provide a quick insight of their day in regards to what they ate, schoolwork and any funny/loving moments with the children. In addition, Mangala helped potty train my sons which I really appreciate because not a lot of daycares would do that. As parents, we know potty training can be hard when there is no consistency, but with Mangala and the helpers, consistency was never lacking. She has done such a great job with my boys. When they first started school they were advanced. Thanks to Mangala and her helpers in continuing what we were doing at home in the daycare. My son's kindergarten teacher was impressed at how nice his penmanship was at such a young age and able to spell his own name on the first day of school. In addition to knowing his alphabets and their sounds. I can honestly say Mangala and her helpers are not your average caretakers and care for these children because it's their job, it's because that's what they love to do and are excellent. Such honest professionals in my book and the next best thing to family to care for my children. What more can you ask for? Just like family we will continue to keep them close to our hearts and will continue to visit them. This daycare is definitely on my list if I were to ever have another child. As working parents the thought of day care for our barely 1 year old daughter was not ideal. We called about 20 places and it seemed like all of the good ones had year long waiting lists. We called Ms. Mangala of First Steps and everything sounded good but she wouldn't have an opening for a few months. We left our info and found another place in the meantime that had 5 star reviews and seemed good. We took our daughter there and it was not a match for us. That daycare provider was not understanding of what a 1 year old needs and admitted it had been a few years since she had such a small child. We decided we could no longer take her there after 2 days- she made our 1 year old seem needy and said she could not hold her during the day and that she cried at naptime and that didn't work for them. Fast forward a couple of months Ms. Mangala called us back when the spot she mentioned opened up. We were apprehensive thinking maybe our daughter was too young and needy to be in daycare and were actively looking for a nanny. But we came to tour anyways. When we got there we could visibly see Ms. Mangala's love for the kids and passion for working with them. We decided to give it a try and told her our daughter may cry. She said that is normal for this age, what a relief! Clearly she was carrying our daughter around and doing everything she could to make her feel comfortable. She told me soon she'll be running to the door in the morning and knocking, I thought "not my child lol". She even declined taking on a new child until our child was fully acclimated and was taking naps without any problems. Now everyday my semi clingy daughter runs to the front door of first steps and knocks; doesn't even say good bye! I go to work every day knowing she is being loved and is given individualized love and attention from Ms. Mangala and her helper. She is already saying 2,3 at 17 months and I receive videos of her singing and dancing with the other kids. I am able to fully engage in my work and not be worried all day. Every time a friend asks us about her being in daycare we are so enthusiastic about this care that two friends have asked for the number to First Steps for when they are ready to send their kids to school. I feel comfortable talking to Ms. Mangala about any questions I may have, she is very accommodating to our daughters dietary issues, it feels like having her at a member of our family's home- only more structured. read more

I was fortunate to have been recommended First Steps Daycare from my mother. Which by the way had NEVER gone to the day care or met Mangala the Child care provider. All she knew was that her friends daughter couldn't stop raving about her sons new day care. According to my mom this girl is very particular and picky with anything involving her son. As any mother should be! I set an appointment to go check it out with my son. Right away when I met Mangala she was very warm and welcoming and the most impressive of all she was so informative. She gave me a full tour and details of the kids daily routine, She also teaches and enforces good manners! I was sold I thought to myself where do I sign!!! Please let me bring my son here!!! I wanted him to starting coming right away! However there wasn't an opening quite yet and I also had to give a couple weeks notice to his current daycare provider. We set a start date and I took enrollment paperwork. I wanted to seal this deal! (I didn't want her to change her mind! My son didn't make the greatest impression that day) I couldn't understand this great feeling I felt when leaving. I mean I had gone to a few different daycares taken tours and while some had great programs and impressive meal plans, None made me feel at ease like I did here. I couldn't wait to bring my son. The daycare where I use to take my son was the only place I had ever taken him since he was a year only. After 2 years I didn't have the comfort I use to and it was so difficult to take him the last few months. Between my crazy work schedule shopping for a daycare and the expense of daycare it wasn't an easy task to get him out sooner. It was very hard walk away when I would take him. He would cry on his way there and tell me not to take him he would run away when we would approach the door, he would kick and scream sometimes at the door and he had to get carried in just so I could leave. I would take him as late as I could and I would have him picked up as early as possible, and sometimes trying not to take him at all. This was horrible I thought so many things. I would call my mom and vent my sadness and frustration daily. That's why now I'm so grateful and very appreciative for Mangala and Gnanna they treat my son with so much love and respect. He loves going so much he tells me to go already or he runs to the door because he can't wait to be there. It's an amazing feeling to leave now because I know he's in great hands!
