This past weekend, I finally got to visit the Field of Dreams baseball field and it was more amazing than I ever imagined. I couldn't stop smiling for the entire 4 hours I was there (and I might have shed a few tears the entire time as well). We arrived around 11 AM on a Saturday. I had already made my reservations for noon to tour the farmhouse. Upon arrival, we made the $20.00 donation. I'm not sure it's required but it was a worthwhile donation. We immediately went to the gift shop (very expensive) and got my MLB passport stamped. From there we proceeded to the field and walked around. After we walked around (corn is only a few inches off the ground), I grabbed two gloves and a ball. My wife and I played catch in the outfield then I went to first base. Playing catch on the field is magical. It was memorable playing out there with the kids and everyone just soaking in the experience. The farmhouse is worth seeing. It's 20.00 per person and about a 30 minute tour. You don't go upstairs (it is available for rent) but the guide shared a lot of stories from the movie and MLB expanding the games here. Overall if you're a baseball fan you need this experience. It is truly magical and surreal. It's as close to heaven as you will experience in Iowa.

We stayed in Canyon Ridge, which is non electric. All 50 sites were spacious and clean. The camp host and a few area residents sold firewood, which was a nice surprise The park has a number of hiking trails that are short, but challenging. Many lead to, or start at the Apple River, so there is plenty to keep kids occupied.

To start my twins' 7th birthday weekend, we went hands-on at Creative Adventure Lab -- part art…read morestudio, part science lab, part playground for the imagination. Think oversized Lite-Brite wall, LEGO heaven, magnetic walls, pottery painting, colorful straw building, and even an indoor rock climbing wall. My 3 autistic boys were in sensory heaven: Benjamin dove into LEGO builds, all of them loved the giant foam blocks and magnetic wall, and the Lite-Brite lit up their creativity (literally). The climbing wall? Not their fave -- but that's the beauty of this place: so many choices, you just follow what sparks joy. We only had 2 hours (after school, before closing) but it was the perfect amount of time. Just $10 per kid and free for me . Small crowd = basically our own private creative wonderland. We left with happy hearts, and a few more problem-solving skills under our belts. Checked this spot off my bucket list -- and now it's on my "must-return" list too.
