Fish City was recommended to me as one of several options provided by my tour guide for our 1-2hr stop at Belfast. As soon as I heard there was good seafood, I knew I had to give it a try. Right off the bat, it's a very clean and well-designed place. The service was excellent throughout. There are many signs and notes in the menu sharing about the ethical and natural souring of the ingredients. I wanted to eat and drink local. I had a Northern Irish dry cider. It was crisp, refreshing, and not too sweet. For my dish, I ordered the mussels. It came with a piece of bread on a bed of creamy, flavorful broth. We came here to celebrate our daughter's birthday. We were seated fairly quickly. The food took a bit. Our waiter provided good service as well. Now for the food. We started the with the oysters, the grilled prawns, and fish and chips. So here's where the four stars comes in. The oysters were pretty disappointing. It was dry, like how can one ruin oysters and dry them? The prawns on other hand were good as well as the fish and chips the tartar sauce was delicious. For our mains, we had the mussels, the chicken burger, and the cod risotto. I definitely recommend ordering the mussels, really flavorful. The burger was just that, nothing spectacular and the risotto was ok too. The cod on the risotto was good but the risotto itself was too grainy. The dessert was the sticky toffee cake it was so good super delicious. Overall food was good, the cleanliness of the restaurant needs improvement. The bathrooms were not well kept and the tables weren't wiped down good. Some on the dishes had food stuck on the back of the plates. But that's why I gave four stars. I do recommend you try the restaurant they offer good food, hopefully the owner can have staff regularly check the cleanliness of the store. But if I were back in Ireland I would come back here. On a recent trip to Belfast, my girlfriend and I dined here for dinner and had an overall disappointing experience. The blunders began with the drink order. My partner ordered a Mojito, which came out tasting like anise/liquorice. Not in a good way. She did not drink it. We ordered the Provincial Fish soup to share as a starter, which the server described as being white sauce based. We were then presented with a red colored soup which the waiter explained they 'made this special for us' (?!). The soup was not good. It likely had puréed fish in it because it tasted 'fishy', but nothing resembling actual fish chunks in the soup. The top of the soup had cold shredded cheddar cheese and a partially mushy baguette-style croutons. Neither one of us got further than tasting the soup. It was not good. For the mains my girlfriend ordered Roast Halibut Steak -- £28.95 It was described as 'Scallion potato boxty, red pepper and onion compote, chilli and garlic dressing'. The Halibut was good but the potato boxty was an over-cooked and very over-salted pancake covered with a layer of mushy red pepper skins (presumably that was the 'red pepper and onion compote'!). She ate the fish only. I tasted the fish and agree that beyond the fish, the rest of the dish was a dud. Nobody came to check on us during the meal. Eventually, our plates were cleared and when it a waitress eventually presented a bill and stated I hope everything was to your satisfaction, my partner proceeded to tell her about the issues with our meal, she seemed unsure what to do (guessing she was new or inexperienced). She brought over the original server (the one who told us they had made a 'special soup' for us). She proceeded to explain the issues we had to him and I told him that the soup should not have been on the bill since it was not what we ordered and we didn't eat it. His offer of resolution for our poor dining experience was to say 'OK I will take the soup off the bill'. There was no apology, expression of concern about our poor experience, or anything else to make us feel like our unpleasant dining experience was anything they cared about. Very disappointing. Please give careful consideration before dining at this restaurant. read more

I took my wife from the USA there after seeing it had won an award in 2023. I had seafood chowder (sans any real seafood, it was essentially a bowl of warm parsley sauce) and my wife had fish and chips (average at best). It was hugely disappointing with a 50 pounds bill. I have great advice for American tourists. Try a local chippy on one of Belfast's arterial roads out of the city, there are far better fish and chips at almost half the price. A 4 pound taxi ride will get you there and you'll still save money. My favorite from my old neighborhood is The Bethany on the Newtownards Road but there is at least one great chippy on every road out of town. The single star is because the pint of Guinness was quite good. Also 3-95 for 2 slices of wheaten bread??? It all seems a bit rippy offy. Verified tourist trap, don't waste your money. read more

Given the location, it *may* be a tourist trap. But it looked that local people was dining here as well. Decor looked pretty new and pristine. It was hip like a fusion restaurant which was quite contrary to what I have imagined as a "chip shop". Looking at the menu, I noticed that there were options of fish 'n chips - Cod or Haddock. For some reason, haddocks are hard to come by in Japan. So, I picked the Haddock in a heartbeat. As I had a quite disappointing chowder a few days prior and was seeking redemption, I couldn't resist not picking up their seafood chowder. The chowder came first. The bowl was as big as I hoped. And it had generous amount of salmon, clams, herbs and potatoes. And it turned out that this was the best chowder I had in long time. It reminded me of my good old New England days when I had no trouble finding good ones. Then fish 'n chips came. Its texture could tell that it was fresh as soon as I bit into it. Breading wasn't too oily. It was nicely crispy which added more satisfaction to it. And their local pilsner, "Mourne Mist" was perfect match to the foods. The waitress was very helpful and pleasant. She definitely sealed one last star to make this place "5". Locals may have different opinions, but if you are visiting, looking for good, solid, fish 'n chips? I highly recommend here. The fried was just truly bland i thought i got covid needed to add a lot of vinegars, ketchup and salt and pepper. Don't get how this place get such a high review, the place is clean and bright. But service was not great, two person on the floor running around really hard to get their attention to get something. It advertised as one of the best fish and chips but I had better, I had the cod taco combine with all the extra ingredients the flavor was ok. And nothing special about the chips. The worst is the appetizer shrimp scampi, which is a tiny portion of almost £9 for 4 pieces of tiny deep fried shrimp with a little salad on the side. Such a rip off. I popped in here while visiting Belfast, the restaurant is bigger than you would think. There's additional seating upstairs. We were seated quickly and the staff were very friendly. They have a good amount of vegetarian options. I got the vegan fish and chips. The chips were very good, the vegan fish was pretty much tasteless, the only flavor came from the breading. But to be fair I've yet to have a good vegetarian fish option. Also fyi was told that their vinegar isn't vegetarian, didn't get a chance to ask what was in it but appreciated the heads up. Overall Value: A little underwhelming. Not quite sure I understand the glowing positive reviews - the food was really bland. This is probably closer to 3.5 stars, but we were pretty disappointed. The Fisherman's Curry came with a nice amount of big prawns, but the flavor just lacked any real punch or depth. I liked the quality of the vegetables used in the garden salads, but they used way TOO MANY onions. I like onions in my salad - I put them in every day. No one likes a straight up onion salad though. Space and Pace: Actually a really cool and vibrant interior space, with lots of rustic nautical equipment contrasting nicely with a modern decor. It definitely had a cool vibe. We got there a little on the later side for dinner, and the place was not too busy and fairly quiet. It is a nice spot for a date. Service: Friendly enough, and the food came out relatively quickly. I only found out about Fish City yesterday via Yelp and it was immediately on my to do list. I went straight there at lunchtime and ordered a haddock supper with peas. There are some vegetarian options, by the way, including superfood salad. This was good fish and chips and even if I did cringe at the rather geometrical, steakette-like shape of the fish, it had something else much too rare in the chip shops of Northern Ireland - light batter. So much of our Northern Irish batter is thick and heavy with a layer of dough under the outer crust and a lot of hard, overcooked matter at the head and the tail, not something that I have encountered in England, north or south, coastal or inland. With that in mind, I'm very happy about how Fish City have opted for the "less is more" approach to coating their fish. read more

My first visit to Fish City was on Saturday 06.08.2016 at 7pm with three others and sadly it was a bit disappointing and mediocre. I ordered a superfood salad which was tasteless, perhaps one of the most boring salads I've ever eaten. Seemed to be thrown together with little consideration for flavour combinations. It basically consisted of a plate of cold broccoli, lettuce, peas, sweet potato (I think, or maybe it was butternut squash), some chopped peppers and that was about it. Dressing was non-existent, so I had to ask the waiter if I could have some salad dressing to liven things up. Said dressing was woefully tasteless too. My side of grilled halloumi was good, but it's hard to get grilled halloumi wrong. My dinning companions liked their meals of fish & chips and vegetarian burger. I tried some of their onion rings and chips and thought the onion rings good but chips pale, soggy and undercooked. Waiting staff were pleasant but slow to take our order and forgot to bring water to our table, so we had to ask again for it. Minor issues and forgivable as although they weren't busy this restaurant's quite new, so they're probably still finding their feet. Fish City seem to do traditional chip-shop food quite well but the 'light bite' section of the menu is a bit of a let down. A "meh" from me and in all honesty I wouldn't rush back. Yes! Fish City will do very well - it's in a great location and has all the goodness of an old fashioned chippy without the grease! The interior is great and you can tell they've put some real thought in to it. There's an obvious fish theme without it being too overdone - almost a gentle nod to all that's nautical rather than pictures of trout on the walls. The staff are excellent - I was slightly early for a meeting and they made me feel at real ease even though I was sitting by myself. The young waiter joked that I had been stood up - I like having a bit of craic with staff - much better than them being robotic! The menu is large and don't panic if you don't like fish as they do a large selection of burgers as well as classics like Sausage Suppers and Chicken Goujons. I went for the fish tacos - they were great and I could have eaten the accompanying sweet potato fries all night. The tacos were beaut- the cod was thick, clean and perfectly battered, I only wish there had have been more of it. The currently (AUG '16) don't have a license to sell alcohol but that's because they've only been open 9 days - it's very much in their plans. This would be a great location for an informal date or a business meet! Only losing a star because it's not quite the finished article - it's 4.5 stars in my book! read more
