My first visit to the island and came directly here for lunch due to Yelp reviews. I ordered the lunch oysters which were fried and came with a small service of coleslaw and two hush puppies. The coleslaw was just cabbage with a mayo "dressing" on it. It tasted home made, but was very plain and a small serving. The oysters were good, but greasy, there was grease left on my plate. Hush puppies were good, slightly sweet, but good flavor. Tea was ok. My bill for a small lunch plate and tea, no refill or to go, was over $19.00! Not what the menu said by the way. I really feel I was overcharged. And surely I did not get the dinner plate, it was much too small. Double check the prices before you order! read more

DO NOT miss out on the lobster sauce! I had to stop myself from asking for a cup and a straw. Hush puppies to start were the epitome of perfection and delivered to the table as soon as we arrived. Orange Crush drinks were fantastic. Margarita mix was a bit too sweet. Mary Ann who took care of us was awesome. Food was hot, quick, and absolutely delicious. This is a hidden gem of Down East. Even the salad was fresh rinsed romaine lettuce. Can't wait to be back from Virginia to enjoy this place! I stopped by on my way to work at The Bridge Downeast at the Ramsey Center to get takeout for my lunch before students arrived today, March 21, 2024. I had ordered a cheeseburger before and it was good. Today I decided to order the shrimp platter and goodness me, it was a delight. The large shrimp tempura was perfectly coated, the hush puppies were delicious and tartar sauce as well as the cocktail sauce were awesome! in all honesty, I can say that I only like tartar sauce from my aunt, Cox Restaurant in Morehead City, and now finally, at The Fish Hook too. I rode in with my son on a Davidson and my service dog. We were promptly seated in this quaint little mom and pop restaurant. We enjoyed the BBQ sandwich and friendly wait staff. The service was great and so was the food. I will come back next time and bring a bigger appetite. read more

A real gem! What a treat to find a scratch made fish fry. Had the flounder, oysters, shrimp and clam strips. The shrimp were huge and everything was super fresh. Slaw and hush puppies were great too. Just ok, but not worth the price. Expect to pay $30 a plate for small portions for just ok food. The place is small and the host acted snotty to us because we had 8 people and I ask if the 6 person table they gave us was large enough. So sorry to bring you business. My husband and I are staying at Atlantic Beach and drove to Harkers Island to eat at the Fish Hook Grill on another vacationer's recommendation. I had a flounder sandwich and fries and my husband had an oyster po boy. Both were very good. Breading was light to let the seafood shine. Hush puppies were great! Waitress was friendly and helpful. The waitress was wonderful, but if I could give this place negative stars, I would. My husband and I went there while on vacation last week, and we both ordered the "specials." I got the flounder plate, and he got the steak that came with a "salad." My flounder was the worst flounder I've ever had. It was dry, with a ton of bones, and smelled like it had been sitting on the side of the road all day. My husband's steak was freezer burnt with a bunch of random seasonings slopped on top of it on one side to try to hide the fact that it was freezer burnt. His "salad" was a bunch of lettuce, a single sliced cherry tomato, and a little ring of onion. Never in my life have I've seen such a pitiful salad. I wish we'd just sent the food back once we saw the price for our "specials," I really wished we sent it back. We paid high-end prices for roadside quality food. We were searching for food during our vacation adventure to cape Lookout and we found this cool grill and seafood restaurant

We departed New Bern in time to have lunch on Harker's Island before catching our ferry to Cape Lookout. We debated between Fishhook and Captain's Choice across the road but selected Fishhook because of its more homey appearance. Captain's Choice just appeared more touristy. Fishhook, we found, was a nice, small family run place. In fact it appeared that Dad and Mom were in the kitchen cooking and Son was the server. He was a nice boy, very polite and did a good job. Andrew and I started with some Hatteras style clam chowder. I doubted if Andrew had ever had this style of chowder before. In fact although I have, it was a little different from what I have had. It was undoubtedly homemade and was very simple, with a briny broth and tons of clams. I commented that this would be a really good bowl to have on a raw winter day. Ms T and Aunt Annie had a fried shrimp plate and Andrew had a softshell crab sandwich. I thought all of it was quite good. The shrimp were almost uncoated. Ms T did not feel they had much flavor, but I found them very good. They reminded me of shrimp we had as kids. I got a bite of the softshell crab which was prepared similarly and was also good, but the crab is so mild it gets a little lost on the sandwich. This is not a fault of the preparation, just the fact with fresh softshell. I bucked the trend and had a chili dog with their homemade chili sauce. The chili was simply browned chili-seasoned ground beef not really sauce. The dog was buried in this meat and I really liked it. The chili had a good flavor with a little spice. It was somewhat like the dogs I get at The Chilli Parlor in Springfield, IL. It is similar in style, but better flavored. We had a nice lunch. It is a humble, local place where you feel like you are eating home cooking. read more

Small town, local people working in the joint, ONE waitress for 10 tables. I don't know how she did it. (the waitress) Sweet sweet local lady waiting on the hungry church crowd that all seemed to show up all at the same time. I just wish there was a sign that said "please seat yourself" so that way us newbies/non-local folk aren't standing there like idiots blocking the entrance. The food was good and the prices were good as well. I had a cheese burger........WITH..... COLE SLAW?!? Is that cole slaw??? LOL! I forget I'm in the south. Still tasty (after scraping the cole slaw off) and it was only $5.95. It comes with chips but they ran out so they upgraded our side with french fries! score! We were exploring Cape Lookout National Seashore and stopped in dinner after a perfect day on the island. We had a little of everything. Catfish bites, onion rings, shrimp and oysters dinner,peel and eat shrimp and the calm chowder. Delicious and amazing service. They are very careful about the COVID situation so we ordered and ate on their porch. A perfect dinner to end our day. Stopped by for lunch after the Core Sound Decoy Festival. This was a tiny place, maybe 10 tables. Cute typical nautical decor, although we loved the Steelers doorstop! Friendly service, very prompt with drink refills. We started with the Hatteras Clam Chowder, which surprised us with a fish? chicken? broth base instead of cream. Delicious bits of clam, bacon, and potato, but the broth! I could have taken home a gallon of that and had it alone. Rich, complex, yummy. I had the fried oyster platter and hubby had the blackened shrimp wrap. Both were local, fresh, and excellent. We liked the shrimp a little better, as the oysters are still recovering from the hurricane and aren't as salty as usual. But that's not the restaurant's fault. Breakfast is a new thing for this established restaurant, they are doing a good job. The ham and cheese omlete is super cheesy, the grits a creamy, the hashbrowns are cubed and fried, not the kind I like but many do. Then they had pancakes, today was apple pancakes. Had lunch here on a whim. I had the fried oysters. They were well prepared, they just got them from the boat, shucked them, dipped in a light coating, and fried for probably 10 seconds. The coating was light and crisp and the oysters were delicate, huge, plump, tender, sweet and just the right amount of brine. If you haven't had oysters or don't like them, you will like these. I've had fresh oysters from all over the U.S. and Canada....these were the best!!! Husband had the hamburger and it was a 10. Fresh ground meat, hand pressed, thick and juicy.
