Sub tropics is the perfect beach hole in the wall! I walked in to the most amazing smell of sandwiches and pizzas toasting. The best part of my experience were the smiling faces of the staff. You can tell that this business is a family affair, run by folks who truly have a passion for what they do. They were also very helpful in answering any questions I had and customizing my order to my liking. My fish wrap was average, but the star of the show was the blackened turkey sub my mom got. Forget Jersey Mike's and that god-awful Subway and check out Sub Tropics for your take to the beach lunch or cold dinner needs. Sub Tropics came recommended from a Pine Shore native and it did NOT disappoint. The bread is great and that red pepper relish- man- it's the bomb. I had the turkey and Swiss and when I told the girl I had never been she recommended the chipotle Aoli to go on the sub instead of the usual mayo or mustard and it was killer. Hubby had the spicy Italian and he enjoyed it as well. Boar's heads meats are a game changer and they don't use those at Jersey Mike's. You can also purchase bags of chips, cold drinks and even smoothies. The staff was incredible gracious and kind considering how busy they were, and I'm sure are, day in and out. Be sure to leave something In That tip jar for those hard working friendly folks. They seemed to know almost everyone in line and shouted hellos and names as they went. I would put this on your must stop list for Atlantic Beach..there's a line and a tiny shop with a small staff so prepare to wait a few minutes but any sandwich this good is well worth it. A legit sub shop on the Atlantic Beach strip, Sub Tropics offers a lot to sandwich fans. Boars Head meats, as so many others have mentioned, make a huge difference. I had the turkey; my friend had a chicken club. All the meat was shaved as we ordered. Veggies were abundant (but the lettuce was a little brown). I wish I'd know about the chili aioli, but maybe next time. There are two tables outside, but no more seating, and the trash can is off the parking lot. If you're looking for a great sub, pleasant people, and delicious smoothie (to go), you can't beat Sub Tropics. read more

If we weren't trying to responsibly support local restaurants during a pandemic, this place would get five stars. It's a tiny sub shop with excellent ingredients, fantastic prices, and a great menu. We didn't try the smoothies but the Coastal Club (ham, turkey, roast beef) and the turkey wrap (with veggie cream cheese) really hit the spot. The people working there were very friendly too. You can order your sandwiches "island style" which comes with lettuce, tomato, onion, banana peppers, salt, pepper, spices, vinegar, and aioli. It's a local restaurant which I am always trying to support, especially during these times. While I was there, I heard them take phone orders, which is an option to avoid any lines. But similar to Shelby B's review, I can't give this place more than 3 stars due to hygienic and safety concerns during this pandemic: - It's a TINY shop with little ventilation. Without any employee intervention, there weren't any options for people to physically distance themselves while waiting in line or ordering. - There were zero signs about wearing a mask, which at this time is required in North Carolina. - The employees were not wearing masks OR gloves. I feel like the gloves part should be required, pandemic or not. That said, I was hangry and about to be stuck in a car for a few hours, so we ate the sandwiches and chips. So here is an honest review. I was in the area and needed a quick lunch so I researched best sandwiches on the beach. Yelp's reviews lead me to Sub Tropics so I have it a shot. I ordered the roast beef and turkey "island style" which comes with lettuce, tomato, onion, banana peppers, salt, pepper, spices, vinegar mixture, and something they call sunshine aioli. In a nutshell the sandwich was good. I ate all of it and enjoyed it. However, I feel like it is very close to Jersey Mike's. I must mention that the price is much better than Mikes though. I never tasted the aioli which I assume has a sight banana flavor? That's just based on what I read. That would definitely set it apart if I could tell it was there. I would recommend this place for the reasons that the sandwiches are solid. Boars head meats can never go wrong. It's a privately owned and local business which will draw me in every time. The people were nice but they were NOT wearing masks during this covid crap. I felt like that is important. Food was good and tasted great after a morning in the sun, but they didn't give us very much meat on our sandwiches (I think my kids each got one slice on theirs). One worker was friendly and helpful but the other had an attitude and didn't seem to be in the best mood. Stopped in for lunch while exploring on our motorcycles. Line was long, food was good. They offer only cold subs with the option to get your sub toasted. Very tasty options. I had a spicy Italian which was very good. Also on the menu they have wraps and pizza. Pizza wasn't the best I've ever seen. But they do specialize in subs so that's to be expected. They offer can sodas and bottle water as well as coffee and tea. You can pay with cash or a card. Outdoor seating is the only option. Limited parking as well. I'm giving four starts because when I think of and want a sub I want it to be hot. That's not an option at Subtropics. Outdoor bathrooms were disgusting. I've seen porta johns that we're cleaner. I don't have a disability and I am not easily offended but this was beyond rude and something a normal person would never say to anyone unless they were intentionally trying to be an ass. I was excited to try this place out as it seemed good based on the reviews. I went with my boyfriend and we walked up to the cashier to order. My boyfriend ordered first and when she asked what I wanted I said were ordering separately. She still insisted on taking my order. She had a giant attitude with me and was overly friendly with my boyfriend. When I told her I wanted an ice coffee she said, "why didn't you tell me when I had the ice out?" At that point I walked out and she said to my boyfriend "I'm sorry I pissed her off" as if she purposely did it. I was always taught that if a place is packed with locals, it is the place to go! This was definitely the case when we visited Sub Tropics last Saturday. Sub Tropics is a tiny sub shop and when we went it was packed with a line out the door. All of their meat sliced to order and the girls that were working, were working their butts off to get through the long line. We did have a long wait, but it was understandable with the amount of people there. I would recommend going and taking it to go. There is no seating inside and there are only a few tables outside, however during summertime I believe this seating would be uncomfortable. Parking is very limited, so if you are within walking distance that would be your best bet. We got a chicken club wrap and a 6 in italian sub. Both of them were solid sandwiches. We stopped on our way out of town for some quick sandwiches. It's a really small building with only 3 parking spots in front, but a larger lot to the side. I had the Spicy Italian (it wasn't very spicy, but was tasty), my husband had... a ham and something? It was good! The kids split a turkey winch they enjoyed very much. The bread was pretty fresh, but the best part was the fresh sliced deli meats and cheeses! I'm a big fan of shops that do this. Order to the right, topping station in the center, smoothies, chips and payment to the left. Speaking of smoothies, I think I had the best peach smoothie I've ever had there. I think it was just a mix, but man, it was good. Husband had an ABP (we laughed when they called it that) listed as Accai, blueberry, pomegranate. It was good, just not my thing. There's no seating inside (and really no room for more than 6 customers at a time) but there are two picnic tables outside. We were planning to eat there, and were kind of surprised that there was no seating. Luckily one of the tables was free, and there was a bit of a breeze. On the other hand, immediately beside the table was a very very full trashcan that was attracting flies. Another downside was the dirty bathrooms around the corner. My 5 year old thought they were really cool. I didn't share his enthusiasm. The ladies room door was kind of hard to close and latch. They WERE very beach-y, and sort of mid-eighties state park-y, if you're into that sort of thing. I decided that I would just wash my hands and wait for a rest stop. These things wouldn't be an issue if you were ordering to go, which is what I think most people do. Everyone was very friendly and happy top help, and the place seemed to be frequented by locals in the half an hour or so that we were eating - I think that's a good sign. We visited Sub Tropics for lunch a few days after Atlantic Beach lost power due to Hurricane Dorian. Not all foods were available because the shop's truck deliveries haven't all arrived to replenish all items. We appreciated that they were open to offer the foods they did have. The items we ordered were fresh and delicious! The owner and staff came outside to make sure our meal was good, and they were so kind and courteous to us and our energetic toddler. Simple and good sandwiches. My group got the roast beef, coastal sub, ham&genoa sub and I got the cubano. We also tried a wild berry blast smoothie. ALL of it was delish, there was no skimpin on the meats, bread was fresh and tasty, so were the fixins. Only seating was outside, which was perfect when we went bc it was only 83 with very little humidity. If it was hotter, more humid or cold, it would've been uncomfortable to eat there and we would have just got it to go. This is a perfect meal at the beach, after the beach, and after the aquarium.
