Bestie & I were hungry for some grub after working up an appetite from geocaching. We had high hopes but sadly, we were in for a let down. First, the hostess places our menus down, breakfast side up & even though the cutoff was 11, we arrived shortly thereafter so I had hopes that perhaps I could have breakfast vs lunch. I was promptly shut down by our server. I settled on fried clams that came with fries and butter beans. The butter beans had to have been straight out of a can as they had no seasoning or meat flavor. Even after I salted them, they were still flavorless. Our server was kind enough to remove them. The hush puppies and my bestie were the highlight of my lunch. Especially after hearing our server tell Bob's wife that she would see what kind of breakfast she could get the cook to wrangle up for her. Now, don't tell me no and yes to a regular because they threatened to "go somewhere else." That is a direct quote from the regulars (I could hear their conversation because the restaurant wasn't that busy.) Because my fries were under my clams they were soggy and I only ate 4 of them. It pains me to give them such a poor review but neither of us were impressed enough to even want to return. I do commend them for being so community involved & charitable to our western neighbors after the storm. Just wish we had had a better experience. read more

Service was phenomenal, ample parking, nice vibe and decor. The food, was... okay. The hush puppies were dry and the batter lacked flavor. The fried chicken and pulled pork was the same--minus dry. Just lacked flavor. I attempted to add some bbq sauce to make it more palpable, but alas, I am not a vinegar bbq kinda girl. I'm a dry rub Texas style with sauce on the side--THICK FULL BODIED SAUCE. So if you're like me, and hankering for that style bbq, this isn't the place for you. The baked beans were solid. The mashed potatoes were uhhhh.... Probably dehydrated? I'd try potato salad next time instead. (For reference, I'm a simple mashed potatoes person--Idaho potatoes only, salt, butter, and evaporated milk... smooosh smoooosh smooooosh til thick, fluffy, and no chunks--so if that's you too.... You will be disappointed a tad bit.) They were tasty though, so I'll give em that. Husband said his prime rib sandwich special was solid and that I would have loved it. Blast him! lol read more

After seeing how much the owners of this restaurant did for Western NC after Hurricane Helene, I was happy to swing by and give them a try when bestie and I were in Newport geocaching. Unfortunately Fat Fellas just didn't hit for me. The decor inside and outside the restaurant was adorable and the service was fairly good. After sitting down we were immediately brought out some super tasty hush puppies with butter so I took that as our meal was also going to be super tasty. I ordered the shrimp burger with coleslaw and French fries and the meal came out within minutes of ordering. The fried shrimp were big, fat, succulent shrimp with the perfect amount of batter, but the coleslaw was a miss with absolutely no flavor. I ended up just eating the shrimp off my sandwich to avoid the bland coleslaw altogether. The fries were just fries and not anything to write home about. I also tried bestie's butter beans as one of the sides of the day, and again no flavor. Maybe we should've ordered BBQ for a better experience? read more

This was the second time I have been to this restaurant. I was disappointed with the lack of service we were offered this time. Our waitress completely ignored us. She sat at a table speaking with an older gentleman for over 15 minutes. We finally got a refill of our drinks when another waitress saw us sitting there just shaking our heads in disbelief. When "our" waitress did come back to us she asked if we wanted dessert and when I said no she left the bill. This is one of my go to restaurants it's family style and have great menu from breakfast to dinner, one of the few restaurants that serves real cured country ham and has flounder and catfish on Friday,fried chicken vegetables,and pot roast too, love the decor cain't miss the old truck and gas pump parked at front door, they also cater and do events and they took many trips with food trucks to our mountains feeding the people after the disaster flood, it's definitely the down home restaurant I love to eat at and support, you will love it also. read more

Mr. Jeremy helped us with a catering pick up for 50 people with only a week notice. The attendees raved about how good the breakfast was and the price was fair. Pick up was easy and ready on time. We will definitely be using them again in the future! read more

While visiting friends in New Bern, this was recommended as a place for me to try Eastern Carolina barbecue for the first time. After tasting the barbecue platter, I must say it was a good call. In my opinion the meat didn't need the sauce. The smoky and seasoned flavor on its own was good enough. Everyone with me who sampled it agreed. Owner is not friendly, and the hours they are open is a guessing game. I ordered a patty melt and it's always been hamburger sauté onions with Swiss cheese in Rye bread then grilled. This was served with American cheese. Also I hear he pays his kitchen help lowest wage he can and does not give out many raises. I like to think whom ever is cooking my food is a happy to work there employee. Underpaying does not make happy people and having to always ask for a raise is belittling. Servers make good there and I would live to go but, not supporting someone that treated me poorly in his restaurant. read more

Everything seemed old and dry. The cole slaw had turned and I unfortunately ate some. I just get the feeling we got leftovers from their catering business. Been there for breakfast some but I'll not go there again. read more

We ran over to Fat Fellas for a quick lunch. Our waitress, Mariah, was a total sweetheart and was awesome. I ordered the southern salad and it was truly spectacular. The restaurant itself is quite decorated and has a lot to look at. Very cute place with a country feel. read more

We had been to the old location on several occasions and loved it. Today we came for breakfast and we're so disappointed. There was at least a 45 minute wait for our food to come to the table. It's understandable with the times today, Covid and low staffing, for service to be a little on the slow side but our food came to our table cold and the hashbrowns were so hard they'd break your teeth trying to eat them. I would like to give this place another chance because I know they can do better but it's going to be a while. read more

I really wanted to like this place. The menu looks great. But, alas, we never got past coffee... actually we never even got to drink our coffee We stopped after church. We were seated right away. Our server came and took our drink orders. We both ordered coffee with cream. She never brought the creamers. So, after awhile, my husband went to the counter to ask for creamers. There were 3 servers behind the counter. None of them acknowledged him ..1 was looking at a customer's pictures on his phone. The other 2 still ignored him. He finally asked a server who was grabbing utensils if he could please get some creamers. Totally ignored him and walked away. He came back to the table after our server was at our table. I told her that he was trying to get creamer for our coffee. Her reply? "Awesome". What ?? So, she said she'd get our creamer when I finally said I was getting upset. She then proceeded to ask what I wanted to order. I told her that I wouldn't order for my husband but, I had to tell her what I wanted...she left, came back with creamer at the same time as my husband came back to the table. He told me what happened at the counter. I looked at our server and told her that we would be leaving and don't want to order. That was our first and last time we will go there. read more

First time here today. I made a large take out order because I wanted to eat lunch with my 98 year old Grandmother who lives just a couple miles from them and she can't get out much anymore. She wanted some of their baked ham. So I ordered for her and 5 others. When I went to pick it up I was impressed that within 2 minutes of showing up early I had been greeted/spoken to by no less than 5 of the staff. Everyone was super nice even though they were really busy at the time. I made a couple of special requests at the last minute and again they were super accommodating and did everything I asked with a smile. I live an hour and a half away but man I wish they had a location close to home. The food was fantastic but the staff was most impressive. Thank you Fat Fellas and all your staff, it was truly a pleasure doing business with you today. I will be back again, for sure. Ps..Grandma absolutely LOVED the baked ham. Her caregivers said she ate more today than she has in a while and THAT was worth way more than the price of ham. read more

Ok, we've been to the original location and can say that the new location has lost its down home feel. They've tried to bring in the nostalgia of the old location but it feels forced and disingenuous. We started with the fried green tomatoes and were served ranch with them. Ranch is not something that should be served with everything fried. They should have offered up a pepper jelly of some sort. Give us something unique. Hush puppies are good and came out hot. Main meals came out and we were soooo disappointed. I feel like they have become too big for their britches. In their attempt to serve the many, it seems like they have started cooking out of a can. Gravy tastes like it came from a jar, instant mashed potatoes which im not hating on and corn out of a can which again, no faults there. I had the country fried steak and they only served with brown gray...no white pepper gravy....disappointed. the steaks also taste pre-made from frozen boxed food. My bestie had the brisket which you will see is NOT!!!!! collards where so lacking and Okra was like eating air..no flavor.. Man, they had such a great thing and then this. I love this place. The new restaurant is comfortable and well done. The handmade tables are really cool. I want one for my home. The food is simple but well done. It's honestly just plain simple food. I love they bring out the hush puppies when you arrive. I have to add that the owner is such a HUGE supporter of the community. I don't normally leave bad reviews but I feel like this is necessary. I'll start with what was good. The hush puppies and the sweet tea. Those were good. The service was good too. The food we ordered, not so much. The hamburger patty was definitely not a fresh patty. It was definitely frozen. The pork nachos were mainly lettuce. And the pork didn't taste the best either. Even on a busy Sunday morning coming home from the beach...this place was great! The food was good, as was the service. The only real complain we had was that we ordered biscuits, didn't receive them with our food. When we asked for them, we were told they were "out"...so that was frustrating. Ok so we went here as a family 3 times over several months. The first visit was ok at the original location. The second visit we arrived for breakfast were seated quickly and the server took our order in a timely manner. Upon receiving our food my daughter had cold, rubbery, disgusting hash browns. The rest of the meal was under seasoned and greasy. The coffee tasted liked the Folger can was left open for a week and we ordered hush puppies (their only saving grace) that never came out. Found out later they didn't serve them until lunch which would have been fine if we were informed of this. 3rd visit was for lunch about a week later since the neighbors said the best thing is the burgers. Guys the burgers were obviously frozen over sauced with mayo and mustard and the buns just fell apart, assuming they were defrosted that day. My family did not finish our meal we paid our bill and left. On the second visit we did express our disappointment with the meal and the manager was nice enough to cut the bill in half. Overall the people working here are very nice but good lord please do better with the food. We will not go back to Fat Fellas.... even if we had a gift card. I hope the food gets better! read more

Great food at great prices. We were visiting Atlantic Beach for a family vacation. Son who is stationed at Cherry Point said Fat Fellas was the place to go for BBQ. We were able to feed a family of 13 for about $80. When we called to place the order, the staff was extremely helpful in putting a menu together. Three ponds of pork, a few chickens, potato salad, cole slaw, and corn. It was all delicious. I especially enjoyed the pork, nice shred and moist. The house sauces are great. The coleslaw was a bit unusual. It was cut extremely finely. Still, the crunch, sauce, and taste were spot on. read more

We always love this place. Are here for years and always go when we are back home. Love the catfish and homemade tartar sauce. I ordered the buffalo shrimp and fry basket tonight for dinner. Out came a basket with fries and fried shrimp. I was thinking that the shrimp would have buffalo sauce on it. The basket was drenched in what they call, "buffalo" sauce. It is an orange grease that is trying to pass for buffalo sauce. I tried one of the shrimp and it had no buffalo taste to it. I asked my waitress whose name was Alex where the buffalo sauce was. She says it is on there. I asked for more buffalo sauce because I wasn't tasting anything. I also asked for more fries due to my fries being soggy due to this greasy sauce poured all over the basket. Alex in turn grilled me about isn't that what I ordered was buffalo shrimp. I replied yes, but this isn't buffalo shrimp. Not only was my food not good, the service was not the best. I ordered a soda and never had it refilled, even though the waitress did acknowledge that I needed another one. I am so disappointed with the service that I got tonight! read more

If you are on the way to Morehead City, take a detour just a couple minutes off 70 and into the downtown of Newport, NC to check out Fat Fellas BBQ. There is more to the menu than just BBQ, but I enjoyed my pulled pork sandwich. The entire staff was very friendly and the Fat Fella himself was walking around to tables chatting with the people he knew and thanking the people he did not for coming in. There is plenty of seating and adequate parking, but I imagine the parking would get tight if the two dining rooms filled up. My sandwich came with a generous portion of pork and slaw on a soft bun. Be sure to ask for the spicy vinegar sauce which tops off the sandwich perfectly. I ordered the combo with fries and a tall glass of sweet tea. The server was nice enough to prepare a to go cup for me as well. All of this for only $7.99. Wow! Go see the Fat Fella if you can. read more

I recently had the breakfast here. Expect to find Waffle House quality food with a better atmosphere. Disappointed in the waffles here when I asked for blueberries I expected them to be in the waffle not on top. Turning the dish more into a pastry pie waffle. This has always been my wife and my favorite place for lunch. Fried chicken, barbecue, and shrimp burgers are the best around. Oh and the hush puppies are addictive. We enjoyed the hometown. small business feel of the original restaurant so I was concerned that their move to a larger restaurant would destroy that charm. Well after visiting the new restaurant those fears appear to be misplaced. While some of the small restaurant ambience is missing, they have successfully captured most of the charm in a much bigger establishment. Most importantly the good is just as great. read more
