Walked over to this restaurant soon after checking into my hotel. Walked up to the bar and was greeted by Kelsey. Let me just say the staff was AMAZING! The assistant manager is young and has a great sense of humor. I felt very welcomed, food overall was really good. I chose the chef's 5 course menu...my only gripe is that with one of the meals, it came with beans (chickpeas I believe) when to me needed more time to stew down and soften. This place of establishment is very racist. The food is not up to par. The waiters are very rude and disrespectful. I got sick off of one of the dishes (the porgi dish specifically) I have recently contacted department health services. I wanted to like this place a lot but it was just okay. Came here for lunch since it's restaurant week at $25 per person. Upsides are that service was great, I loved that it was all hands on deck and many servers helping each other out and making sure that every table had what they needed and ordered. The ambience is cute, loved the seating area at the front that was cozy, books and things to read if there was ever a wait. The crispy fried squash blossoms were interesting. I wish that the batter they used had some flavor/seasoning because it didn't really taste like anything. I HATED that there were cut up squares of menu paper served underneath some of the dishes intentionally, like I really hated that from an aesthetic/plating and eco friendly standpoint-- it's a complete and total waste of paper smh. The ricotta was more like a sauce texture that kinda weirded me out and the most standout taste for this dish was the DC honey. The summer vegetable tart was pretty good and flavorful. They ran out of the toffee pudding, so I had the Smith Island cake and that was decent. My guest ordered the buffalo oysters and catfish sandwich with a side of fries and described all as mid at best-- MEH. Fries could've used some salt along with the cajun-ish type of seasoning that came on them. All in all okay, just not impressive and don't see a reason to go back. read more

Had an excellent business dinner with my colleagues to celebrate a major milestone at the Fish Shop. Of note, the manager (Angie) was extraordinary and especially courteous; she went out of her way to make sure everything was set up perfectly. Her attention to detail set the tone for the evening and was reflected in the outstanding service from the rest of the team. Clearly a lot of care went into the design and artist presentation. Restaurant was fairly empty on a weekend afternoon. The service was good and the food was mediocre. I was expecting lump crab meat on the crumpets instead, the topping was a little crab in a lot of mayo. The breakfast sandwich was pretty good. I was most annoyed with the drinks. I ordered a chardonnay, was told they didn't have it so the waitress suggested a Sancerre, which was $24 for a 5oz. glass. Cost way more than it was worth. Very limited beer selection also. I won't go back or recommend it. Your paying for a view of the wharf. 4 people, three drinks, $152 + tip which they are now are suggesting 22-25%. read more

We really enjoyed our first visit to Fish Shop, during a short staycation on the Wharf. We enjoyed the open, airy decor. Service was attentive and efficient. All our food was excellent, as were beverages. As lovers of all things Scottish, we were a little surprised by how little Scotland there is in the outpost of a noted Scottish restaurant. "Chesapeake-bay" cuisine is actually very, very, very common in the DC area. Surely there's room on the menu for a whisky sauce or cock-a-leekie soup? Also, the prices for actual Scotch whisky here are inflated way beyond any markup we've seen -- certainly the most expensive glass of Scotch in the whole Wharf. read more

New restaurant so we understand that improvements will come. First the atmosphere was wonderful. The location at the end was very quiet just a short distance from all of the activity so sitting outside provided a Miami beach vibe with the boats in front of us. I think this is a plus. The drinks are excellent! Our server, Billy, was EXCELLENT! My only correction: The host/hostess should know that the restaurant is next to garage 3. The Maryland crab "frittata" - lacked crab meat. I couldn't find it inside nor taste the crabmeat at all. Was all tortilla, in my opinion.The kitchen wouldn't accommodate our request to add crabmeat on the top or on the side. Heck, if they had given us a teaspoon of crabmeat to resolve my grievance, I wouldn't been satisfied. All I could taste is tortilla. It would be better to put the crab on top or on the side so there is no doubt it was added. I'm glad to see that other customers who left reviews enjoyed it. We'll come again because everything else outweighed the negatives. I won't give the 'frittata' another opportunity unless I can see the crabmeat going forward. read more

From the moment my party walked in we had a strange and subpar experience. The restaurant was completely empty for Saturday brunch which was a little concerning. They were out of ingredients and common liquor options. I wish I saw the previous review regarding shady credit card transactions which I unfortunately experienced along with another guest at my table. The restaurant team spent over 15 mins swiping our credit cards, calling more team members over, and the waitress had to apologize because they were "trying to figure it out." We never got an explanation as to what the issue was about. After returning home I noticed an unauthorized extra charge on my account. After multiple calls to the restaurant and providing my information management never called me back to resolve this issue, leaving me to resolve this with my bank . We tried for the first time for my bday. We started with the VA peanuts. They had good flavor, but were swimming in a pool of oil. I opted to eat with a spoon so to not get my hands all oily. Raw oysters were very good, but I kind of wished they hadn't topped them with so much sauce. It was hard to enjoy the oyster and I prefer to doctor myself. She crab soup: Flavor was okay. I want to say I sensed it was roux-based, but way too dark for a she-crab soup -- more appropriate for a gumbo or etouffee. I'm accustomed to a lighter base. There was no crab meat in it either. I did save some of the hot sauce that came with my oysters and added it to the soup. That definitely helped it out and erased the overwhelming taste of the roux. My kids both got the massaman curry with rockfish. One said it was okay and the other did not like it at all so didn't eat it. It had halved new potatoes in it that were obviously added after the fact -- not cooked in the sauce/integrated in the dish which, in my opinion, is an expected characteristic of massaman curry. I tasted it to see if I wanted to take what my son didn't finish to-go and eat it the next day, but I didn't like it enough to do so. When they cleared the plates, they did not inquire as to why he didn't eat his food and offer an alternative. I got the trout with orzo risotto. It was fine, but lacking in any brightness -- just a flat, rich and buttery taste. It was presented with some clams that while nicely prepared, didn't really tie in with the dish itself. I was given no separate plate to dispose of my emptied shells, so I just placed them on the table. The fish was well prepared with perfectly crisp skin, but again, the flavor was just sort of flat and boring and a little too much on the rich side. I felt it needed some acid. Service was very attentive up until we ordered, but then sort of fell off. I had a glass of wine that sat empty on the table for far too long. We came here for restaurant week and it was...decent! I think this place has potential, but everything was kind of hit or miss. For the first course, we got the lobster & gazpacho and the sugar toads (pufferfish apparently?). The gazpacho was very tasty and refreshing but the sugar toads were nothing special. They taste like any other fish, just harder to eat because of all the tiny bones inside. Didn't help that we hadn't eaten them before. For the second course, we got the Virginia trout and the Grilled Pork. The grilled pork was so good and I loved the combination of ingredients that were paired with it. The trout was decent but again, nothing special. The tiramisu was great for dessert, but the custard was a weird temperature and didn't pair well with the sorbet it was topped with. Maybe the restaurant week menu limited us from getting some of the better things on they serve? It seemed like they treated their main options kind of like a wedding (one red meat, one fish, and one vegetarian option) and I wish there was more we could have tried. Aside from the food, the service was very attentive up until the very end where we had to flag someone down after waiting for our check for about 20 minutes. Great location on the wharf. Beautifully decorated restaurant with floor to ceiling windows that face the wharf. Beware if you're dining during sunset. You will be blinded by the sun and there are no window shades. And once the sun sets, the restaurant is kept very dark. Started off with the Maryland crab crumpet, which you order by the piece. It was a tasty little bite. For my entree I had the conchiglie (pasta) with Maryland blue crab, tomato and basil. The pasta was tasty with a little bit of the kick that I was not expecting. However, it would have been far more enjoyable if the pasta was just a little bit softer as it was still pretty hard. (I'm noticing most restaurants I've been to lately are serving pasta on the hard side now. Was there a memo? Lol!) As a side, i ordered the dreaming out loud baby lettuce with cider vinegar dressing and crispy shallots. It was much larger than I was expecting; enough for 2 people. And for dessert I had the yummy strawberry and vanilla custard with strawberry basil sorbet. It was a bowl of vanilla custard with a thin layer of strawberry custard on top, finished off with a small scoop of sorbet. Worth the visit if you want to treat yourself to a nice dinner. read more

I'm from LA so I got higher standards for food quality and taste... the food wasn't worth the price and the portions were sometimes ridiculously small. The fish was fresh, but found the seasoning/dressing on them underwhelming. Definitely not a great tourist spot. I suggest going to Old Ebbit Grill for a fancy dinner instead. The best dining experience on the Waterfront. Hosted a table of 10 friends for a surprise brunch party. Had been in for dinner 4 days before and had to go back for more! Everyone raved about the food, the service and the decor. This restaurant is checking every box an excellent dining establishment can check. The oysters are outstanding, fresh and plump. The smoked trout blew us all away, every fish dish was exceptional. The Smith Island Cake for dessert will be a fan favorite for the duration - moderately sweet and very light. The service C is second to none and everyone is delightful. Thanks to Mariah and Robert for making the surprise special and memorable for my husband. Highly recommend eating at Fish Shop in Southeast DC, the Wharf (directly across from Arena Stage along the water). My husband and 3 friends from out of town ate there last night for the first time. It was fantastic! We had an assortment of starters (grilled oysters, smoked trout, blue crab trumpets, spiced peanuts), main entrees (handmade pasta with blue crabs, Maryland rockfish and asparagus, grilled squid), two desserts (Smith Island cake & tiramisu), wine and a couple of mixed drinks. The service was spot on - attentive, knowledgeable & helpful but relaxed & not overbearing), the setting was beautiful with a great bar area, large inboor dining area, and outdoor seating with a river view. If you enjoy seafood, looking for a place for a special occassion or a nice date night spot, this is a place for you. read more

The ambiance and waterfront views are stunning, however the menu is leaving a lot to be desired. My husband and I had an order of the grilled oysters, the raw oysters, the Rockfish, and the Cod. The oysters only come in half a dozen- which were amazing oysters but there should be an option to order a dozen without having to place a second order. There are NOT a lot of allergy-friendly items on their menu. I have celiac and I can eat at almost any seafood place (that's not fried food) but there were quite a bit of items that came automatically with gluten. I did not enjoy the Rockfish dish with the gluten allergy as much as I would've hoped. I know they have a small kitchen (even though it's a pretty big space) but they could take out some seating to accommodate the kitchen. Drinks were average, I would come back to this restaurant with lower expectations. Service was great with friendly wait staff. Don't listen to the bad reviews because this place is head and shoulders above the other restaurants in the area. We had the Tall Timbers baked oysters (perfect), sugar toads (so good), and rockfish (incredible). Our server Mariah knew so much and guided us through an unbelievable meal. What a beautiful night by the water! If you want a sublime, quiet, thoughtful dining experience that's on point, very sophisticated, and far from the chaos and crowds, this is your spot. My husband and I enjoyed a lovely meal at the fish shop. We sat at the bar. Our bartender was delightful and made wonderful wine recommendations. He absolutely love the rockfish and the side of greens we ordered was garlicky and delicious. I loved the focaccia with a delightfully salty butter. Beware of shady charges by this restaurant! Came here last Saturday to celebrate a family member's birthday. Food and service were great. The bill was split 3 ways. 2 days later my husband received a notification from his credit card that an additional charge of double what we paid was made by Fish Shop! The other members of our party were not charged. My husband spoke with someone in customer service about this who said they would look into it and get back to him. My husband sent an email to Fish Shop the next day after not hearing back from their customer service rep. The manager contacted my husband and was once again told they would look into this matter and get back to him. It has been several days and no follow up from anyone at Fish Shop!! Will now dispute the additional charges through the credit card company. This is really disappointing to say the least and we will NEVER return to this restaurant! There are other much better seafood restaurant options anyway. read more
