We stumbled upon Rappahannock Oyster Co. while walking around The Wharf, and I'm so glad we did. It happened to be happy hour, so we grabbed a couple of sangrias and ordered a few fried baskets to share. The shrimp and oysters were incredibly fresh, hot, crispy, and full of flavor. You can definitely tell they take pride in the quality of their seafood. My nephew ordered the burger and absolutely devoured it, so I'd say that was a win too! Between the waterfront views, laid-back atmosphere, wonderful staff and great food, it was the perfect place to take a break and refuel after exploring the area. If you're spending the day at The Wharf and looking for a casual spot with delicious seafood and a great vibe, I'd definitely recommend stopping here. read more

It was just okay A bit pricey given the amount of food given The major issue I have with this place is the ambience. The inside seating is really small and really strange. They set us, a party of three, at a sort of bar that was centered around Frozen seafood so it was hard for us to sit around. There weren't too many tables for people to face each other which is also a little bit strange they do have outdoor seating but the view honestly isn't something that I would recommend for outdoor seating even though it's on the wharf Parking in this area is really tough. Either take an Uber or plan to pay for parking or come at an Nothing else really stood out. I doubt I will come back here. read more

Visited with friends mid-week last week around 6:30pm for dinner and was blown away by the service. Our bartender Bary was a genius mixologist and crafted the best cocktails I've had in a very long time. Food service was also super attentive and kind. The bar area was a decently large space perfect for dining inside after a long day. We were lucky enough to have come before the rain and had great views as the sun set. The food was fresh, flavorful, and we loved everything we had. Ceviche, octopus, and muscles were spectacular but loved the fresh oysters too (clearly since I forgot a photo). Stopped into Rappahannock Oyster Bar with a girlfriend before an event. We wanted something light, so I went with the tuna tartare. Fresh, flavorful, and exactly what I needed to hold me over without feeling heavy. We chose to sit at the bar, and while the food impressed, the service didn't quite match. The bartenders spent most of their time chatting with a regular, which meant we were waiting longer than I'd like for refills or attention. Really good birthday dinner! I'm pretty good with a vibe next to the water while enjoying seafood. Our bartender/server was very accommodating and made sure I was happy during our visit. We started with the grilled octopus, 6 raw oysters & 6 rockefeller - atleast an 8 across the board - everything was pretty standard. The crabcakes, thai lettuce wraps, combo baskets and Branzino get two thumbs up for flavor and portions. For cocktails, I wasn't a huge fan of the Forbidden Zone and Summer in Dogtown because the mezcal was overpowering but the Seasonal Sangria (Peach) was perfect! Although the weather was terrible, we had a few minutes of calm to enjoy the scene and our food without chaos. I would definitely consider this a top choice for a view and vibes. read more

I went through all the one star reviews before stopping in here. I thought they were all pretty petty. Most of the people that left reviews with one star only had one to very few reviews and it just seemed like it was a case or Red Ass! So glad I came in. I brought my wife and adult son. We had a dozen oysters (4 of each) , they were all fantastic. We the shared the Tuna Tartare and Lump Crabcake. Both were bomb! Check out my pics. Also, I had the Branzino. No lie, best I ever had. It's a full fish with just the right amount of add ons (sno peas, mushrooms, lemon, Red Fresno peppers, and some micro greens) in my opinion (also the bartender) the best entree on the wharf. Get it, you won't be disappointed. The inside seating is good for small groups at the bar, but there is no room for large groups. Fortunately, there is an outside patio , but when it's HAF outside and humid, it's a no go for me. Side note the Sauvignon Blanc was top tier and paired well with all the above. One of my absolute favorite restaurants in DC. As I come to DC from NYC frequently , there's one place that my trip to DC r is not complete without and that's Rappahanock Oyster Bar. During the summer and warmer months, sitting at the bar and sipping a dirty martini while noshing on some oysters is the absolute perfect afternoon experience. We've come for dinner, we've come for lunch and we've come for just oysters and cocktails and we've never been disappointed. The food is always great and there is never a complaint. The service is always super friendly and casual and the ambience couldn't be better. Whether you want to come and sit for a longer dinner, just want to grab some oysters at the oyster bar or are just looking for a casual place to hang out for some drinks. While waiting for our boat to be prepared, me and my friends decided to stop in the oyster bar for some oysters to refresh ourselves and get a break from the blistering sun. Long story short the host that was present on Sunday, July 5 was absolutely condescending, rude, and obviously attempting to make us feel uncomfortable. He repeatedly told my friends we need to be paying customers to use the restroom after I informed him. I am a he had a very nasty passive aggressivetone while taking my order to which I absolutely notice he did not give any of other patrons. What can I say but WOW!!! Every single thing was on point- the oysters fabulous, the squid- amazing, gazpacho- fantastic- our mains were crab cake and Bronzino. The crab cake was a solid hit- succulent and sweet - no filler , and the Bronzino- best I have ever had. I especially loved the butter garlic sauce that came with the mussels that I ordered. My sister's tuna tartare was also really good, but I think they should offer a different type of vehicle to eat the tartare with. Everything tasted fresh and flavorful. A solid oysters experience on The Wharf. Happy hour is the place to be here, as they do $2 oysters and $1.50 clams. They also have a nice selection of fresh salads and other seafood dishes. I haven't had it, but the whole branding looks delicious. The one drawback for me: I prefer West Coast oysters, and you'll only find East Coast / Virginia oysters here. read more

You get what you pay for Food I have been here three times now with my parents, son and daughter. We have gotten the shrimp poboy twice, the burger twice, oysters each time and the shrimp salad once. We have also always gotten whatever flavor of Crème Brûlée was on the menu. The burger was one of the best I have ever had. They have recently changed it and it isn't quite as good as before but the quality and flavor of the meat is top notch. The sauce they put on it is also excellent. The oysters are some of the best if not the best I've ever had very fresh tasing not fishy or too salty like many I have had on the gulf coast. The shrimp poboy was dressed differently than I am use to in Louisiana but it was a great change up. The shrimp are huge and flavorful. Overall one of the best shrimp poboys I've had and I've had a lot of great ones. The Crème Brûlée was one of the best restaurant deserts I have had anywhere. I prefer the Mocha over the Matcha but for someone who normally despises Matcha I was shocked how much I liked it (my daughter loves matcha and she couldn't get enough). The salad and charred oysters my parents got were also very good. Overall everything we have had has always been top quality. Service The wait staff are always friendly, quick and helpful. Never had a bad experience here. Ambiance We have always sat under the covered porch. It is right on the water and has a beautiful view. You feel the breeze come through (they also have fans in the summer and heaters in the winter). There is also indoor seating if you prefer. Overall very pleasant place to eat. Price This is my only knock on the restaurant. Last time I was there we ordered 1 burger, 1 dessert, 2 oysters and water and the bill was $50. The burger alone is $24. I knew that it was expensive after the frost trip and I still have gone back twice but this is definitely a special occasion kind of place for us but since we aren't in DC often that is fine. I'm not going to say something is or is not worth it for you just know this is high end not a midrange place to eat. With all of that said it is 5* for me. We love the food and I would go back whenever I am here so long as it is a small party. I would not however bring the whole family of 5 simply because of the price tag. read more

Well, the entrance is not clearly marked. We came a little after 8pm for a birthday dinner, and there was no host. We walked into the front door, an employee looked directly at us, then just looked back down at their phone. We asked, out loud, if there was open seating, and if this was the front door and were ignored. We then made our way around the building to the exit, which we figured out because we got open mouth stared at by a bus boy. So we walked around to the front again, someone in our party started walking around the patio looking for someone who worked there, or a proper entrance. At this point, we noticed a worker - the same one who looked at his phone - following the person in our party and laughing at him while he tried to find a host or server. He then went to stand at the host stand, holding an open wine glass that he was drinking out of. The man whose birthday it was - who this worker had just been openly laughing at - asked about a table, he didn't really say anything. So I asked why he didn't help us and why he was open mouth laughing at us. He stammered over his response, said he was laughing about something else, then acted like he didn't actually see us prior. When he said that to my face, I laughed. A woman who looked to be his manager came up behind him and listened to me re-explain what this guy just did, but the never said a word and this guy kept denying it, then took a sip of what looked like white wine, completely unfazed. He told us they didn't have a host, like that was an excuse to not help us. It was a very bizarre experience. Needless to say, we left. It's conveniently located not far from the heart of D.C. and a semi scenic spot if you choose to dine outdoors since it's right on the water. We ubered, so I'm not sure what the parking situation is, but it was an easy walk from the drop off area. We chose to sit indoors, but were still able to have a clear view outside and see Marine One fly by as we enjoyed our lunch. Service was good, and everything was delicious. Unsure how to review because, my partner and I ended up with some digestive issues post oysters here this weekend. We had no idea there was a holiday boat parade, and the warf was crowded. It was my birthday! I requested oysters and a martini. The gin martini on the menu was pretty good. Didn't love the pickled onion but did enjoy the pickles We got a dozen oysters, 4 of each of the offerings. And they were great! So we thought. In the middle of the night my boyfriend was up and in the bathroom. I quickly found myself doing the same the next morning. We had to cancel our plans for the following day so no more birthday celebration due to digestive issues, which continue to gently plague us 36 hours later. *update it was 3 days of digestive distress. Our server, Patrick, was knowledgeable of the menu & offered suggestions. We ordered the Caesar Salad with Fried Oysters as our appetizer & it was divine. Full of flavor. The oysters were cooked perfectly. The salad greens were fresh with a crunchy texture that perfectly complemented all the items in the salad. I ordered the Fried Oyster Basket, which came with Old Bay Seasoned Fries. It was delicious. My husband ordered The Lump Crab Cakes. He said they were very tasty. We shared a desert of the Apple & Pear Empanadas. They were wonderful. My only disappointment with our meal was no acknowledgment of my husband's birthday as we had received in other local restaurants on previous experiences. My partner and I came here on a whim trying to avoid all the crowds at the other restaurants by the boardwalk this was the last one on the street so we chose this one. Despite previous reservations the hostess did her best to offer outside seating with as much shade as she could offer. It was a beautiful sunny day and the sun was unexpected as it was forecasted to be a rainy day anyway, my partner got his usual margarita he describes as good and "nothing to complain about " accompanied by crab cakes and broccolini with a suggested add on of 3 big daddy scallops which by the was market price and an add on of $24 lol everything was fresh flavorful and HOTI got the lowtalker which was a delicious tequila blood orange ?drink ( I can't remember what exactly is in it but it has a very specific unique taste that wasn't too sweet) with the clam and shrimp fry basket. When I first got the basket I immediately thought damn they could've gave a lil more shrimp or clams but after eating it and feeling satisfied it was the perfect amount that I needed everything was hot and fresh and well seasoned. Upon arrival we were promptly greeted but they haven't even begun to set our table for the party and we had to wait a significant amount of time to be set. The restaurant features a large concept u shaped bar and tables. I personally didn't eat here and I'm glad I didn't because the oysters upset many of my friends stomachs and they didn't have a good night. I only had drinks the the drinks were good. Additionally our server was amazing and he's really caring this review because he constantly checked on us, apologized for the inconveniences of not being ready at the set time and ensured everything was out promptly. As for food, I usually keep it pretty simple opting for some protein (raw oysters, shrimp cocktail) and some fries to share with my friends. While I can't say that I've had anything exceptional, I'm always satisfied enough to return. I think the key here for great service if to come on a weekday. I typically try to avoid The Wharf on the weekends, but on a weekday everything feels a bit more relaxed, less congested and you're likely to receive better service. Usually just get oysters and drinks and I can vouch for those as top top notch. The bar area is really comfortable with a nice view around the 270 degree glass enclosure. They always have a good HH selection of fresh bivalves locally sourced and with different flavor profiles. Also have had the fry basket and it is tasty changeup from the oysters. Excellent grilled oysters that are too expensive not to get at HH, but I digress.
