It has been years since I have eaten at Hank's. Too long really. But we wanted some seafood and their Dupont location was close so - off we went. We were seated immediately and the dining room is adequate. Sufficiently decorated to make it okay. It is furnished for maximum occupancy which is fine. Think casual place, almost bar with food, not fancy at all. I do not mean for this to be a negative comment. Hank's presents itself as more of a beachside joint, not a high end seafood restaurant. Each of these sorts of restaurants has a place in the spectrum. Our waiter - Keith or Kevin - I'm so sorry but I cannot remember his name - was GREAT! Funny, good at his job, great personality and helpful. He started out with a corny, but cute, joke and he kept getting better all night. The manager too was quite good, professional and friendly. What a great staff! The food is good. I could talk about the lobster bisque (a bit on the strong side) or the flounder (a bit on the salty side). But, honestly, the food was good and I enjoyed it a lot. I did not complain about any of it nor do I think a complaint was necessary. So, as I said before, it had been years since I had last eaten at Hank's. But it won't be that long anymore. I recommend Hank's for a casual seafood meal. read more

I finally checked out Hank's Oyster Bar for their Monday $1 oyster special, and it lived up to the hype. I sat at the bar to access happy hour (bar-only, but oysters are available everywhere). Ordered a dozen oysters, bacon-topped deviled eggs, Old Bay fries, a salmon slider, and a tequila pineapple drink. Everything was solid-- the oysters were fresh, the deviled eggs were flavorful, and the Old Bay fries were perfectly seasoned. The standout for me was the salmon slider-- the sauce was so good I wish I ordered more. Great vibe for a casual happy hour. I'd definitely come back, especially for the $1 oysters. read more

I heard good things about Hank's but was pretty disappointed with how average the food was here. We got fish and chips and a clam chowder and were disappointed mainly by the fish and chips, the batter did not stick to the fish and it was pretty dry. The clam chowder was ok however. I stopped in here for their Christmas "Sippin Santa" pop-up and it was well worth it. There are decorations all around the outside area and the bar in the back. The bartenders were very nice, made great suggestions and all of the cocktails they made were delicious. You can also buy any of the holiday cups to take home, and there are quite a few super cute ones to choose from! If you are looking for a nice festive place to have great dinner, festive decor, and drinks in cool holiday cups- this is your place. I ordered the clam chowder which was tasty. I usually like my chowder a little thicker. The lobster dip was good. Would have liked a few more chips. I had an oyster po'boy which was cooked perfectly. Went here for a brunch post-kickball game with my girlfriend's team. There was a nice long table where both teams were able to sit. The waitress on our side was great and made sure we were taken care of! Unfortunately, the other table had a major delay in their food. By the time they received their food, we were leaving. The food was okay. To me, the smoked salmon platter was not worth the price. My girlfriend's sandwich was more tasty and less expensive than my platter. I didn't expect the platter to come fully deconstructed with chopped ingredients. In addition to the everything bagel, the platter included chopped tomatoes, chopped onions, chopped (bland) hard boiled eggs, capers, and cream cheese. It was a "work for your food" situation. I didn't enjoy the platter, but my girlfriend's sandwich was pretty delicious! The margarita of the day was a strawberry peach margarita, and it was okay. I felt it lacked the fruity flavor. Would be better with fresh fruit/pulp or nectar juice. Overall, it would be great if there's nothing else descent around. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't a place I would go out of the way to revisit. Came here for the Sippin Santa pop up and it was super cute. We started at the bar downstairs and had the Not Your Nannas Banana in simplest form it was banana pudding flavored drink but as a strong old fashioned. It was different yet tasty. Upstairs in the Sippin Santa space my friends and I each opted to order a different drink, I had the Jingle Bird and it was tasty, not too sweet either. We all shared the Nui Nui New Year which had an element of fire to it and was reminiscent of a rum punch. Great service here. We had a good time, enjoying the Sippin Santa event for the holidays. We thought the snow globe would be outdoors but it's indoors on the top floor. We enjoyed a range of cocktails, specially crafted for the occasion. We had the pineapple upside down cast, frostbite, wrecked the halls, nui nui new year, and jungle bird. We enjoyed for drinks. The branzino was cooked perfectly and really well seasoned. I loved the olives and tomatoes with it. The tomatoes had this lemony, almost pickled flavor that made the dish pop. Spurred by what would turn out to be an out-of-date online menu, we came here for dinner recently. I've been to their location here and on the wharf and had good experiences. This time was just okay. The half dozen oysters started us off well - briny, meaty delicious bites. However, they didn't have the muscadet wine nor the grasshopper cocktail I was looking forward to. The hush puppies were just okay - probably a disappointment because they were made of healthier ingredients than I'm accustomed to. I did like their mixed green salad with added shrimp (a nice char-grilled smokiness). It started raining midway through the meal which was partially offset by the umbrellas but did detract from the experience. This rating is solely on the food as I did not have a chance to eat at Hank's in person, but was able to get my meal to-go. I was curious to see how the shucked raw oysters were going to be delivered. Hanks did a great way about this. In their plastic to-go box, a bag of ice is set in it with the oysters nestled in. I also ordered the lobster roll and lobster bisque and was pleased with both. Loved the oysters - they were fresh, briny, and plump. Both lobster dishes were good, but just a tad salty. This was easily addressed by getting a glass of white wine from the hotel bar. Everything could improve! Food was Ok....nothing special. I won't go back because of the waiter. Literally pressed us after only sitting for 2 minutes to order. We asked for a few minutes and he came back 30 seconds later. Food was fine but not worth waiting for. Server twice told me that tips were not part of the service charge. After we paid and tipped BTW we were sitting about 3 minutes and we were told they needed the table. There were plenty of open tables. Poor service and just ok food not worth the wait or the price. Had dinner here with a friend on a Friday night. Hank's gets a lot of things right, but falls short in some areas. The restaurant is spacious, lively, and ambient. The outdoor dining space in the front is cute, and the servers there were knowledgeable and attentive. The upstairs outdoor bar is fun. I ordered the white wine and the punch of the day, but the white wine was served in a plastic cup and was not chilled. Most of the food was average and overpriced, with sauces that didn't complement the dishes as well as they could have. The menu could benefit from being more thoughtfully curated. Although there's no dessert menu posted online, they did offer key lime pie and chocolate mousse on my visit. Must-get (5/5): Oysters Rockefeller, Hush Puppies. Both were fried and buttery seafood perfection. Still good (4/5): Lobster Roll, Popcorn Shrimp & Calamari; tasty, though the sauce was unnecessary and didn't complement the shrimp or calamari well. Pass (3/5): Grilled Branzino; although the fish was cooked perfectly, the sauce didn't complement the fish and the consistency of the sauce was off, as it separated into watery and thicker components. The food was phenomenal. The service was great wish we could've sat in the room with the view of the river, but it was full. The hostess did try her best to make it work, but just couldn't. She was very sweet though. As I said, the food was outstanding and we loved the restaurant but what really Made the whole evening unforgettable was the manager, Ronald. He came over to check on us and when we told him we were from Kansas and that we had never tried oysters so we weren't brave enough to order them, he gave us a half dozen oysters on the shell so we could all try them. I'm definitely a fan of Hank's but have been visiting the other location more frequently. Yesterday, I returned to this location and I'm happy that I did. First, impeccable customer service! Shoutout to "Jasmine" in the Q street bar upstairs. They didn't miss a beat and kept my drinks flowing, conversation going, and an overall amazing time. Thanks Jasmine! I'm glad that throughout the years, service has changed and diverse crowds can feel more accommodated. Decor: I've been to this location several times but never to the Q street bar upstairs. Jasmine informed us that the decor changes with the theme and yesterday's theme was in line with the beach/shoreline vibes. I definitely felt like I was in Miami with the outdoor breeze and burst of colors- until the rain came down. Rushing inside to the bar area, we continued the happy hour experience! Drinks: I ordered vodka soda, perfectly prepared and a great calorie cut for those wondering why I selected it. We can be healthy and turn up lol Food: To start, I ordered 4 oysters (priced at $2.25 ea. during HH) the selections were Salty Wolfe (VA) and Battle Creek (VA). The Salty Wolfe had a smooth finish, dare I say that it was a bit creamy and sweet but definitely smooth. The Battle Creek were divine but not as sweet at the Salty Wolfe. Both selections were fresh and of course you cannot help but to squeeze a little lemon on top, a drop of cocktail sauce, and dive right in. 10/10! I always enjoy their oysters. Fried Shrimp Slider with Old Bay Fries: this was a little "I need something more on my stomach" selection and I'm glad that Jasmine recommended it. The shrimp was seasoned to perfection and fried perfectly! Topped with coleslaw and laid on a freshly baked bun, this sandwich was too good to put down. Seriously, the bread was fresh and carried a homemade flavor. The old bay fries were shoestrings cut with just the right amount of Old Bay sprinkled on each fry. This meal is definitely portion controlled but filling and not bad for the price of $8. Stopped in for brunch today and I absolutely loved the drag show. It was amazing. The performers did an excellent job. The bartender must have been having a bad day. They were incredibly rude and their attitude was not great at all. I don't know if they were just overwhelmed or just didn't want to be there. She looked annoyed from the moment we sat at the bar which was actually empty. Our table server however was great and did a great job keeping up with our group. I ordered the French toast and honestly it was very underwhelming. It was very soggy and just had no taste whatsoever. The drinks were good I had the lemon lavender drink and the jalapeño margaritas. Here's the secret to Hank's- the dessert is the best part! We had a wonderful time at dinner overall. The restaurant is large, roomy, and airy. The staff were super nice, and people were constantly checking on our table. My friend had a great fish sandwich, and I had an absolutely amazing cheeseburger! The secret is the dessert though. Literally the worse. I just arrived to DC and decided to give the happy hour a try. First, if you do not get one of the 6-7 seats directly at the bar you can sit at the ledge behind the bar however you must walk up and order from the bartender. We were ignored for a while and then figured out we needed to be all over and order. After we went to ask the hostess for the menu. The draft beer that day was good! We order some food items off the HH menu and clam chowder and when it arrived the plates would not fit on ledge bar so we asked if we can eat at a table so the clam chowder would not spill on us. They said yes and said we need to close out the bill now. Man they pressured us to pay that bill fast! I could barely view it and then the starting tip was 20% but since I did NOT RECEIVE SERVICE I decided to put a custom tip of 18% , which was way to generous for No service. And when we ate the food it was So awful! The bread was dry on the sliders and the clam chowder was just watery. Yuck! What a waste of money!! Heading to a decent meal now! read more

On Saturday, my wife, two friends, and I went out for lunch and ended up at Hank's Oyster Bar in Dupont Circle. The neighborhood was lively, full of energy, and with the nice weather, it made for a great day to be out. Street parking was available but took some time to find, which is expected on a weekend. The outdoor seating was fully booked, we found a table inside, which was surprisingly quite empty. The interior had a typical seafood bar vibe--a bar, tables, and seafood smell. The Food Lobster Roll - Maine-style, served cold with mayonnaise and celery. It tasted fine, nothing outstanding, a very standard lobster roll. The fries on the side was my favorite. Popcorn Shrimp & Calamari - Biggest disappointment of the meal. It tasted like something pre-made and air-fried--honestly, felt like a frozen Costco product cooked at home. One thing to note--there is a 5% service charge added to the bill. We weren't informed about this by the server, and it wasn't clearly visible anywhere. When we were handed the POS machine to check out, I ended up tipping 20% on top of the existing 5% charge, making it 25% in total. For just okay food and service, 20% was fine, but 25% left me feeling a bit frustrated. Overall, nothing bad, but nothing impressive either. The unexpected service charge definitely impacted my dining experience, and I probably wouldn't return. read more

Great food but waiter asked us to Zelle him after we tipped him $20. The total was $250 but the group was not satisfied with the service (hair in food, got other table's food). Given the 5% service charge meant to "cover staff's wages", we thought a $20 tip was reasonable. But the waiter stood there after he saw the tip and said "tip wasn't included in the service charge" and that we could zelle him or use any cash apps (to tip him extra). We had asked him to bring us the receipt so we could edit the tip or something but he said we could just use the apps. Quite an uncomfortable experience and would not go back. I'd understand if we hadn't tipped him at all, but he saw the tip and put us in an uncomfortable spot. We ended up zelleing him $30. Be prepared to tip 20-25% against your will. read more

I've truly enjoyed Hank's happy hour specials For quite some time. They have $2.50 oysters which are still actually really good and good mix of cocktails at a decent price (for dc). There's always ample seating and the music is always a good Mix of pop & r&b. The service however, has consistently left something to be desired (both times I've been in in the last few months), and maybe it's because I was there during happy hour...not sure. They provide some goldfish to munch on at the bar and I had a couple of their happy hour drinks as well as a variety of oysters. The happy hour seemed pretty lame, oysters were $2.50 each which doesn't seem like a deal. I had the crabcake sandwich. It was decent, but the crab is overwhelmed by the bun, which was far bigger. I took half the bun off since the crabcake was on the skimpy side. Not filling. The fries were not hot, I asked for hot fries and they accommodated. When the check came, there was a 5% "service charge" that I did not see noted anywhere on the menu, as required by DC law. I just checked online and it says, "A 5% service charge will be added to your check to help us pay the base wages and benefits of our hourly staff. This fee is not a tip." Do you expect customers to give a 20% tip and then 5% on top of that for kicks? The $25 menu price increases with tax, tip and 5% service/"not a tip" fee to over $34 for a small to middling crab cake sandwich. Not in a rush to return. read more

The seafood is very good here. I've loved their oysters & ceviche. The couple of times I've ordered meat dishes though (molasses braised short rib and chicken schnitzel), they've been misses. My 5 year old (who is a big foodie) asked about the short rib "where's the sauce? This meat is really dry." I completely agree. I think i liked the sweet red gem, salty wolfe, and chop tank oysters. The crab cake was also veryyy good, but i'm not sure if it's worth the price? And i didn't like the fried oysters. It just tasted so oily and like fried cheese on top of big oysters. I liked the cooked oyster itself but the cheese was too much. I tried it because it seemed like a popular dish.
