Now 2 months and 20+ classes in, I'm consistently happy I joined the BJJ Combatives program at NAK2…read moreAcademy. I've taken classes taught by every instructor -- their instructions are clear and they always put an emphasis on safety and care. The instructors quickly troubleshoot each student's execution of the techniques and provide individualized tips or customizations to accommodate individual strengths or weaknesses (e.g., a less flexible back, etc.). Often, the instructors will demonstrate the technique 1:1, showing how a correct execution should feel -- super helpful. I've trained with many other students so far, and I've experienced that same caring energy and focus on teaching from each of them. The techniques are also available online with great emphasis on detail, which further eases and accelerates learning both before and after class. The sessions are simultaneously challenging, enjoyable, intellectually stimulating, and a great workout. Also big thanks to coach Ben, with whom I've trained the most -- a fantastic teacher! NAK2 is an excellent team to train and learn BJJ with, and I couldn't be more excited about this gym and their classes.

Loss of two stars…read more So I went into the facility (as they demanded) back in April to cancel the account. Sure enough, the very polite person on duty turned to the computer, punched a few keys (no pun intended) and then told me I was good to go. What? Why couldn't I do this over the phone? It makes no sense. All I can imagine was the upsell. They tried to upsell me into buying individual sessions. No thanks. Again, great people but poor business practices. Took one star off of my 3 star rating. Here I am now (June) doing a few bills online. What's this I see? 9Round charged me for June? Huh? I see charges every month which stopped in May but then picked back up in June. Odd. Minus another star. I won't be going into the facility to cancel again.

The space is always clean and well organized. Russel has been the only trainer I've worked with so far and he's great. He is super friendly, but also brings a level of joking that makes you feel like you've been coming there for months rather than days. While he is nice, he's also there to make you work. He pushes and motivates you to work harder. Maybe more importantly, his playlists are always on point. He has been very helpful whenever I ask what a move is or how to do it, I have never felt nervous about asking for help like I have in other places. I've been stuck in a funk where I've missed all the mid-day classes at most gyms and would have to go home, disrupt our evening routine to drive somewhere else, then get back to a delayed bedtime for my kid. 9 Round is the best because there are no class times. I pop in right when they open in the afternoon and get home right when the rest of my family does. I've been bringing all my co-workers here. If you're on the fence, you should definitely just go in for your free first workout.

The space is completely unpretentious and has a great, "scrappy" energy that makes you feel welcome the second you walk in. Coach Alex is incredibly knowledgeable--I spent half the time just watching her movement, which is so fluid and smooth. It's rare to find a spot that balances great technique with such an inclusive, easygoing environment. It was so easy to make new friends, and I'll definitely be back for more beginner sparring sessions with other queer women. Thanks for holding events like this! Pro Tip: Bring a mouthguard and 16oz gloves for sparring (and headgear if you have it!).

My experience at Cappy's was humiliating. Alex, the owner, had an issue with another boxer because…read moreshe believed he was homophobic. Because I trained with him, she apparently told people at the gym that I was also homophobic and disrespectful. When I arrived, people were giving me dirty looks. Alex confronted me and accused me of talking badly about Cappy's on Facebook. When I asked for proof, her screenshots only showed the other boxer tagging me in posts. She then admitted that I had not said anything. Instead of apologizing and correcting the misinformation, she allowed everyone to continue treating me with hostility. I even felt pressured to disclose that I have a transgender girlfriend just to prove I was not homophobic. I should never have needed to reveal personal information to defend myself against something I did not do. I came to train, not to be publicly judged and humiliated based on someone else's opinions. In my experience, this was handled unprofessionally and without accountability.

We drive 35 minutes to get here, passing about 4 other places along the way. Skylar and his instructors are awesome and they take their time to make sure all the students succeed. Pros: -Class Size: they keep a very reasonable amount of students per class and actually work with your child one-on-one. -Instructors: Are some of the instructors "young"? Yes- but they are hard working, know what they are doing and are great at working with kids. My son's favorite teacher (instructional assistant) is probably 15, but he looks forward to hanging out there and sees the instructor as a role model. There are always adult instructors when I go in. -Discipline: they hold kids accountable- teaching them responsibility and self-discipline. I have seen a change for the better in my son. -Honesty: all prices and policies are reasonable and clearly explained before any money is exchanged. They actually charge less then most places- which helps when you want multiple kids to go there eventually ;) -they create a fun environment and a great support system for my son and my family! They emphasize form- which is so important! It's The hardest thing to teach in some ways, and I'm glad my son is getting a strong foundation for his punches and kicks. The only con is the parking lot. I highly recommend True Martial Arts to everyone!

My daughter thoroughly enjoys the school, teachers, as well as learning Taekwondo and mastering the skills required to be great.
