I love the food - in fact it is one of my favorite meals to eat. This location however is not comfortable. For months I have been hoping they would realize the music and acoustics are terrible. I feel like the staff has the music turned up just for themselves. It is nearly impossible to hear a conversation across the small tables. I was not for sure if I would like this place.i was told originally it was a Brazilian steakhouse?it was unusual what mixtures in food this place has and it works.i would say try it once and it may surprise you if unsure?i think this place along with 2 other local places is trying to get away from having the normal brand name soda fountains also and use one that is supposed to be good for you and less harmful on the body though doctors will say that there are other alternatives to pop.the food involves having different proteins,sweet potatoes being one of the veggies(there are other veggies if sweet potatoes are not to your liking?)and with the right mixtures of seasonings in a bowl.its pretty good. read more

I recently went to Five on Black for the first time. I had the small sized bowl (cost = $5.95) with brown rice, roasted veggies, spicy coconut sauce, and black beans, with farofa (Brazilian bread crumbs), tomato vinaigrette, and lime. It was delicious! Very flavorful, and just the right amount of spiciness. I also ordered a piece of cheese bread ($0.50), which was so yummy and balanced out the spicier bites. I actually ended up ordering a second cheese bread mid-meal! The environment was very modern and comfortable, although the seating arrangement is pretty cramped and there were a lot of people there because it was a weekend. Overall a great experience and I left feeling full and satisfied without breaking the bank. I will be back! read more

Not bad. Driving through Missoula on the way home from vacation and wanted to eat somewhere we couldn't get at home. Fast food Brazilian? Okay! First off, not very wheelchair friendly. That's always frustrating. Also had to sit at a table with bolted down wooden stools--very hard on big butts! All 4 regular chairs were occupied. Food was definitely fast and staff was nice. I had rice with pork, sweet potatoes, both the mango and coconut sauces(as suggested by another Yelp post), lime, cilantro and farofa. It was pretty good. I would have liked it saucier. My daughter had rice, beef, black beans, mango sauce, cilantro and lime. It was kind of boring. I went back and got her some farofa which helped add some salt and seasoning. I think a little chimichurri would have done wonders, but she didn't want the heat. She loved the cheese bread and ate 5. I wouldn't bring anyone picky here (ie: not your average toddler) if only because they have gourmet soda on tap so your rootbeer or cola tastes NOTHING like what you're used to. Lol. read more

Although my wife had eaten here several times, it was my first experience. I was pleasantly surprised by the food, the flavor combinations worked well and overall it was a good experience. Our 3 kids seemed to enjoy it as well. The bad part is after we sat down we realized that we were drastically overcharged for our dinner, by about 40%. My wife went up to inquire about the discrepancy, which turned into an overly drawn out and protracted investigation at the cash register (during busy dinner time). One of the employees went so far as to broadcast "this lady's got a problem over here, I don't know what's going on with her". Yes, my wife had a problem with your math. Our first time in Missoula after moving to Philipsburg. Looked up the menu and decided to give this place a whirl. Super simple menu. Very easy to negotiate if you pay attention. Got to the line where my 8 year old and 13 year old easily negotiated the ordering process. They kept it simple but were guided by a very cool staff. I got the Feijoada (glad they gave phonetic spelling!!) with a side of collard greens. My wife got the same but with sweet potatoes. The argument could last for days which was better. Suffice to say both were fresh and awesome (I'm still voting for the greens!). The guy who put my food together was very knowledgeable and put the three sides on mine to make it his favorite, which I always ask for in a new restaurant.. In and out in no time.. Missoula is lucky to have this fast, healthy and inexpensive option for lunch and dinner. A small bowl is plenty for me. My pick: brown rice, tilapia, split collard greens/sweet potato all covered with coconut sauce, cilantro and the green sauce. Spicy, tasty and healthy. That's why there is often a line out the door. As a Brazilian that has not been home for a while I was excited to be able to get to eat some of the food I miss. But unfortunately going to 5 on Black was a huge mistake. Obviously, I was not expecting to have things exactly the same as I can get back home. But at least similar. I ordered their feijoada. It does not even have a remote similarity to Brazilian food. To begin with, it is supposed to be a stew with black beans and several different pork cuts. I could count the number of beans in this massive amount of rice with two pieces of cubbed beef. I can keep going on with everything wrong with the food. But I will leave at that if you want Brazilian food don't even remotely consider 5 on Black because that is not Brazilian food at all. Perhaps the owner should learn about Brazilian food before opening several restaurants promoting that "Brazilian street food" is sold. By the way, that is not even a thing in Brazil. read more

This is a hard review to write. This is our go-to take out place. We love it. We were so excited when the Southside location opened near us. However, the new location does not live up to the standards the downtown location taught us to expect. Eight times now (we counted because we didn't want to be hyperbolic), the Southside location has been out of ingredients. If we go there after 6:00, it's about a 50/50 shot that they'll have greens, tilapia, potatoes, or any other ingredients. It's super disappointing. I hope general management reads these reviews and reminds the Southside location that an open sign until 9:00 means that ingredients can sustain that promise. Otherwise, customers who love the company will walk out, like we did. read more

Would like to give this place a higher rating. Unfortunately when I got home I had to pour about 1/2 cup of broth/liquid from my container that shouldn't have been there. It came from the beef, seriously people drain meat before putting it on lettuce. And no it isnt the mango dressing bc i had it put in another container since I hadn't been here before. if I wanted a soup I would have gone elsewhere. The flavors were good, the chicken coconut and beef mango bbq combo are both good. Kid 1 preferred the chicken over the beef. I preferred the beef MINUS the liquid because I'm more of a lettuce person than a rice person. I think it was that, that made her not like it. The amount of liquid for the chicken with rice probably could have been upped simply bc it's a rice dish and rather dry/bland without a sauce. Kid 2 doesn't eat a lot of meat so he ate the cheese bread and we all liked those. I noticed on the other locations review someone said this isn't authentic brazilian, mentioning how it's more Portuguese and americanized. Uhhh I assume that person doesn't realize how many Brazilians are actually Portuguese and speak the language. Colonization is a bitch but it happened so appreciate the flavors. I had a Brazilian neighbor back home that made the cheese bread almost everyday and this place does just as good if not better according to kid 1. I will return just because it's a healthier option than most fast food around here. But i will make sure to not have broth poured over my lettuce next time. read more

Loved this place. We stopped by while on a road trip, and I've never had anything taste so good while still feeling so healthy (which matters a lot when traveling!). This was my first time at this restaurant and I chose it based on the previous reviews on HappyCow. The food was delicious and reasonably priced. Food is fresh and has vegetarian options. You choose your grain, protein which includes roasted vegetables, a side, a sauce, and three toppings. The staff was very accommodating and friendly explaining the process and allowing 1/2 and 1/2 of one side such as 1/2 black beans and 1/2 collard greens. Will definitely go to the one in Bozeman and in Denver when I'm there this summer. read more
