The world is full of expensive salons that charge an exorbitant fee for mediocre men's hair cuts. It shouldn't be complicated, it shouldn't be costly, and it shouldn't be a hassle. This place is a boone in the midst of a trifling market of banal barbers and laissez faire hairstylists. Israel, my stylist, was the zenith of professionalism. He did not waste my time with idle chit chat, but rather he immediately went to work at a dizzying speed. His hands moved deftly and efficiently with clippers and scissors, battling my tangled coif with seasoned skill. I wholeheartedly recommend that you see him work, as it is a masterful tour de force to behold. The location is not too far from my home, in a location with adequate parking and visibility. The shop is tidy, not without ornamentation but decidedly minimalist in comparison to other shops I have visited. They spent good money for those classic barbers chairs that make the experience. The cost is very affordable for even the most frugal customer. I paid sixteen dollars for my cut, when other salons charged me in excess of twenty-five dollars. With that money, I also received a complimentary hot towel, a back massage, and a shave on the back of my neck. Please note that at the time of this review, they only accept cash. Overall, I would recommend this shop to anyone looking for a haircut. Professional staff, quick work, and excellent rates make this place the best shop I have ever visited. read more

Just moved my family here from Cleveland. Went on Yelp to find a place to get a cut. Called from my hotel at 3:20 on a Sunday and they said come on in even though they closed at 4 pm. Had the same girl back home cutting my hair for 15 years and was worried I wouldn't be happy for a while until I found a place that was good yet reasonable in price. I was used to $15 haircuts from a professional. Found Five Star on this site and I have to say that as a virgin Barber Shop attendee I had a great experience at the Shop! Great haircut, massage, and shave - like I never knew I could have a smooth face! Nathan did a great job and Elli and Israel the owners were very personable and introduced themselves. The atmosphere is great with Rat Pack music and great pictures. Used to go to New York city all the time and this place made me think I was in Carmine's when I closed my eyes with a hot towel on my face. I must say I've been to a few barber shops around town and this place is the best. Israel treats you like family from the moment you walk in offering water, television and a very relaxed environment. Customer service is their number one goal in mind. Israel is professional and personable at the same time. The haircut I request is the one I receive. Don't waste your time or money going other places, over here you'll get a perfect haircut, a clean shave, and a hot towel and a massage for your monies. The wait has never exceeded 15 minutes for me because they know what they're doing and don't waste any time. One more thing I really liked was the fact that my first visit I didn't bring cash and Israel without sweating it said, "don't worry, there's Albertson's next door, just grab what you needed to get from there and stop here on your way out." I took my son here last week for his first barber shop hair cut! My dad hasn't stopped talking about this place since he got his haircut done by Israel a few weeks ago. I was nervous because my son is in his terrible twos and this was going to be a whole new experience for him. Israel did his haircut, and did a wonderful job at that! We asked that he do it quickly, because we knew Gavin would probably get antsy. Israel worked with our son and was patient. He is very good with kids. My dad also got a haircut and beard trim, but by his son Ellie this time. It looked awesome! Other than going quickly as per our request for Gavin, they really take the time to make the experience enjoyable. I have not been to an actual barber shop in 25 years. I typically just go to a salon or some random great clips or something. This place, is better, way better. What a cool experience. It feels like an old-time East coast barber shop. Even the chairs are actual barber chairs. I wear my hair fairly long, and it's difficult to properly style. The barber Israel, knew exactly what I wanted, and he nailed it. I was honestly pretty nervous because it takes a long time to grow my hair out and I didn't want it ruined, but he absolutely nailed it. The hot lather neck shave, the hot towel and neck/shoulder massage was a first for me. Certainly was a nice finishing touch. I almost didn't go in. I am very happy I did. I went in for a haircut and my first shave in a barbershop with my girlfriend. I was greeted immediately and invited to take a seat. They cut my hair very well and I am very hesitant to have anyone touch my hair because as a child I never had anyonr cut it right. My barber's name was Nathan and he did an excellent job both on the shave and the haircut. It felt great with the hot towels and I was pleased with all the shave products used. Not only did they feel and smell great, they also made for a nice, clean and smooth feeling. I would definitely return in the future to see Nathan. As for my girlfriend, she wanted to see it first hand and was thilled with the customer service and had a very pleasant talk with the whole staff. I typically go to Floyds to get my haircut. However, I always like to save money and one of my friends told me that Five Star is cheaper, so I decided to try it. Not only are they cheaper, they are way better! Ellie did an amazing job cutting my hair and trimming my beard. He was quick and precise. He used a straight razor for my neck (front and back). I had some razor burn which is to be expected when your skin is not used to a straight razor, but a minimal amount. The only thing I disliked is that I did not find out it was cash only until half way through, luckily I had cash so that was no worry but I think they should have a sign up or something to inform the customer. Overall, I will always recommend Five Star, amazing barbershop, they deserve five stars! read more

Was time to try something different after too much of a 'corporate' front put on at discount haircut establishment. Found Five Star Barbershop on internet website. First class, prompt and real experience with Danny. Showed him picture of what I was looking for and he proceeded to ask me a few brief questions to establish total clarity. Results: Best haircut ever. Danny is the real deal no bullshit barber. Loved it. Met Isaac on way out. I'll be returning and recommending to my friends for sure. I have been coming here for 8 years and this is the most consistent and best barbershop in the East valley they take they're time can do any haircut and if you don't like something they always offer to change it for you .they offer water when you walk in it's a great walk-in New York style barbershop in Arizona! Very affordable for the quality and attention to detail . They're open 7 days a week as well .they never rushed on me and I came in well AFTER closing hours (due to my work schedule )a couple times and they stayed late and didn't rush and hooked it up and they have not once been rude and never ask for a tip ! I love this place! Israel always gets me in right away. The service is amazing. The entire staff is friendly and courteous. They are open every day, which is convenient for my schedule. I used to go to gentleman joes down the street, but the pricing here is a lot better and the quality is far superior. The pricing seems to be a lot more competitive to the chains such as sports clips, but you get a much better cut and extremely better service. I have had the same stylist for the past 20 years, and now I needed to find a new haircutter. This is very close to home so thought I would give it a try. What a terrific surprise. This was fantastic. Old fashioned barber chairs, friendly talkative barber, outstanding haircut and beard trim, fresh razor trim, hot towel and massage. Wow..... I mean Wow! Coming from Philadelphia, I'm pretty picky about where I go for a cut. I moved out here a few months ago, and have went to a lot of barber shops looking for my go to spot. Then I came across this little gem. These guys know what they're doing. You can tell they've been cutting hair for a long time. They used to have a shop in Manhattan, and I feel like I'm back home when I go here. They make sure they are cutting your hair exactly how you want. Hadn't been to a real men's barbershop in years. I had mostly been to the cut rate salons, and mostly seemed to walk away telling myself that I'll try a different person or a different shop next time. Israel cut my hair and listened to what I wanted before starting rather than cutting it the way he wanted. When my wife saw it she said, "Finally, you got someone who really knows how to cut hair. That's the best cut you've had in years." They're open 7 days a week, so when I start needing a haircut I know I can get it at the latest tomorrow. Nice guys, great haircuts. read more

I cannot remember a time when a shop has taken the time to pamper me in the same amount of time other shops do as little as they can to get me out the door. I thought the cut was over and Israel told me he was not done yet then took the time to make it an experience for me. I thought they were just throwing on items to charge me but it was included in the surprisingly small cost. A cost worth paying for the experience. These guys are awesome!! I just wanna start of by saying how much I love this shop ! , my two sons and I came in yesterday and Daniel took care of them right away , he offered us some water and gave them some treats , such amazing customer service so that's a plus . I have been to barbers all across the southwest. From Los Angeles to The heart of Texas. I have NEVER had an experience quite like the one I had here at this family owned barber. I was taken care of by Elly who might be young but is hands down the most talented barber I've seen to date. The man is a sorcerer with the scissors and gives the cleanest fades around with no need for 'guards'. I…read more always come in and let everyone cut my hair but today I decided I wanted to get a haircut from 1 of 3 people because they do a good job... I got asked if I was ready and I declined because I wanted to wait for 1 of the 3 barbers. They all heard and saw me decline the other barber. There was no mal intent with me declining the barber I just know the other ones gave a better haircut. I was ok with waiting because I wanted 1 of the 3 barbers.. 5 more clients came in and the guys I was waiting for just skipped me and went to the other guests?! There is no way you guys lack common sense right??? You see someone waiting and you guys don't ask or tell them you can't cut their hair?? Why let a customer just sit there and waste an hour and 45 minutes. Funny thing is they couldn't even look at me to tell me they couldn't cut my hair. This place is unprofessional and filled with guys who don't even take pride in their work. This place has declined drastically and these barbers definitely pick their friends instead of using a system they have in place. If I could give this place negative stars I would. Terrible experience and won't be recommending to any of my friends or family lol

The great thing about EMG is that once you find your barber, they can become everything you'd want your barber to be - in my case, Tony didn't just offer a great haircut. In our conversations, he actually put me on a path that changed my life. I am forever grateful to the staff and crew of EMG, and from my time in Phoenix they will be one of the things I DESPERATELY miss. Oh - and with regards to my previous issues with them, once I installed the Fresha app on my phone, booking became super easy. I do still think that they would benefit from asking if you want to book your next appointment in-advance (because honestly I sometimes forget to do so and then next thing I know, a month has gone by and my hair looks like a rat's nest), but I feel like once you've found your barber at EMG, stick with them, make a relationship with them, and you'll find a barber that you'll want for the rest of your life. Thank you to EMG and this place could not be more recommended by me.

From the moment we walked in it was like the few guys sitting in the back didn't want to take the "walk in" appt and all scattered. They get someone to come out to cut it and he is just really giving off the vibe that he don't really want to be there. My son's haircut looks horrible but at this point I'll have someone else fix it. I didn't even want to leave a tip but I left $4 (the cut already cost $38, for a child's cut) as we were walking out the door I hear a comment and jokes about "see she only tipped $4) the audacity when I could have done what he did myself. It was so choppy/uneven/ and nics in multiple spots. My son started tearing up in the car cause it just looked so bad. I will absolutely NEVER come back here and I will caution others as well.
